Such intense symptoms for me depending on the hormonal cycle.  It's really clear that there is a connection.  I'm sorry you had a bad weekend.  I keep hoping it will fade out to nothing.  So exhausting.

Hi @Rosetta... thanks for the support. There is def a connection between hormones. I started Evening Primrose and hope that helps. My intense weekend had little to do with withdrawal, other stuff (ie Life) reared its head.

Oh, I see.  It's hard to deal with normal (or not so normal) life set backs in the midst of this.  I hope everything has calmed down now.

Hey FGW,

Just thought I would stop by and say hello.  Are you able to work on your art project?  I know you had a lot going on but was hoping you would still be able to work on it.

Take care my friend,

RS

You are psychic, @RachelSusan (but you already knew that 😉  They just accepted it a few hours ago. I was kinda concerned as there are probs a lot of folks on psycho-drugs in the organization but, per a WD symptom, probably was overthinking it. Going to have a member here look it over for typos. I only used brand names on the drugs (not generics) as the point is that the pharmaceutical companies bear more responsibility here. And that WD is no small thing.

It was going to be done a couple months ago but then Life Happened and I ended up needing an extra day after deadline to get it done 🙂 I get to do a bio and am definitely going to put in SA as a life-saving resource. Thanks for asking and I'll post when it goes up in early June.

@FarmGirlWorks

I'm great, thanks for asking.

I am very pleased that you got that extra day after the deadline.  One day can make a huge difference. I'm really excited to see what you have done. June is right around the corner, so luckily I don't have to wait that long.  Besides, a little anticipation is always good.  I'm so happy for you. 😀

This Canadian national supreme court justice had a panic attack from "a change in medication."  I know there was more to it than just that, but curious how much of it had to do with the medication change. Also, on a frivolous note, that white fur stole Canadian judges wear is off the hook. Go Canada!

Hi fellow Zoloft fighter: thanks for asking. I am doing better. I keep hoping that I'll hit the clarity of the window I had at the turn of the year but, aside from mental clarity not being there, the head pressure is minimal now and ever since I started taking Evening Primrose Oil, my moods have lightened. That being said, I am on Day 33 of cycle and while there gave been physical symptoms for several days (tender tummy, breasts), still no start. However, I am 52 so it could be aging. Oh! And irritability! I totally lost it on a woman at a conference I was at today because I thought she was in my seat (spoiler alert: I was in hers). But OMG: I uncharacteristically was a witch to her, had to apologize later. Wow.

Also this quote was in the lecture today (soul astrology meets depth psychology) and, of course, I put it thru the lens of psych drug WD:

“I cannot make you understand. I cannot make anyone understand what is happening inside me. I cannot even explain it to myself.”
Franz Kafka,
The Metamorphosis

I feel that is so true in WD and that reflection and understanding has to come later after your poor brain has healed. How can you run on a broken leg? How are you doing @Dejavu?

Update, 26 months post-sertraline:

Symptoms remaining (rough range rated on 1-10 scale):

  • head pressure 3-6
  • headaches 2-7
  • cognitive "fog" 3-7
  • anxiety 1-5
  • depression 2-3
  • neck pain and shoulder tension 5-9

Symptoms that have disappeared (knocking on wood now):

  • akathisia (sp?)
  • anhedonia
  • fear of caffeine due to anxiety
  • need for Benadryl to calm down inner shakiness/anxiety
  • suicidal ideation (still appears fleetingly but can be easily told to "go away")
  • intense rumination

I'm probably forgetting something (memory is still shite). I started drinking a cup of coffee a few times a week without ill effects (pro tip: white denim and coffee attract each other). The tinnitus is still bad but I've had that since the brain tumor. I dream of silence.

Right now I am feeling anxiety about finances and working on a website project that, over the last two years, I feel I have lost skills for. However, I really need the money for a trip. And the past three months -- March thru May -- have been intense AF between a kundalini training deep dive, white tantra seminar, international astrology conference (and consult with a psychotherapist/astrologer from Wales that was transformative), AA, the yoga studio closing due to development, deciding to teach a yoga class, creating a piece for the Brain Injury Alliance of WA (BIAWA)... oh and a little thing called meeting my biological father at 52 and diving into a profoundly relevatory relationship with him.

HFS.

I've been *utterly exhausted* the past few days emotionally and mentally. Part of it is ADWD and trying to "keep up" with a non-withdrawing world, part of it is transformation on a cellular level, and part of it is sheer fatigue. This weekend looks to be more mellow and I welcome it. Also, I just found out today that insurance (Medicare) approved a male therapist for me starting mid-June. I realize that there is A LOT to sort through and am so strong in knowing that drugs are NOT the answer. Regarding WD, still in the forest but the trees are thinning continuously.

Also I tried to upload JPG, PNG, or GIF less than 500k of the BIAWA piece and the upload consistently fails. Do not know why as could last year. Tried to make a Giphy (that works) but the text is blurry and the text snippets on it (from this site) are the point. If anybody has tips, lmk. Oh, and a WD activist friend is going to interview me for a niche journal about this piece (will post here when it comes out later this summer). I reached out to the Seattle Times here but no bites so far.

Hey FGW - It is really great to see your symptom list and the amazing progress you are experiencing.  SO huge to have the things you listed gone and others, like depression and anxiety, at least on a lower level.  You are a true survivor and should be so proud of yourself!  💗

-1/06 - 3/07 Cymbalta. Fast taper (essentially CT); withdrawal symptoms after 4 mos (didn't realize was WD)

-10/07: 100 mg Zoloft; 1 mg Klonopin - tapered off Klonopin after 4 mos. Several unsuccessful slow tapers of Zoloft; went up and down in dose a lot

-Spring 2013 back on 1 mg Klonopin to counter WD symptoms; switched over 5-6 mos from Zoloft to 35 mg citalopram
-Two attempts at slow tapering citalopram, always increased dose due to WD; also increased Klonopin to 1.25 mg in 2014, then to 1.5 mg in 2015

-8/17-9/17: After holding one year at 20 mg, feeling withdrawal symptoms due to stress - slowly increased to 25 mg. No change in symptoms after 6 months (? tolerance ?)  - decided to start citalopram taper February 2018 (still on Klonopin 1.5 mg).

Supplements: fish oil; magnesium; vitamin D3; curcumin

Citalopram taper:  2/2018 - 12/2019: 25 mg - 11.03 mg I 2020: 10.89 mg - 7.9 mg I 2021: 7.8 mg - 5.26 mg I 2022: 5.2 mg - 3.36 mg I 2023: 3.3 mg - 1.47 mg 2024: 1/5/24: 1.44 mg; 1/19/24: 1.40 mg; 1/26/24: 1.37 mg; 2/2/24: 1.34 mg; 2/9/24: 1.31 mg; 2/23/24: 1.28 mg; 3/1/24: 1.25 mg; 3/8/24: 1.22 mg; 3/15/24: 1.19 mg

Hi FGW,

The last three months really have been intense for you but you seem to be handling it all very well.  Good for you.  You've come a long way.  Sorry you couldn't get your piece uploaded.  It would have been fun to see.

Thank you for the update as to your symptoms.

This is my piece that is quote "snippets" from SA.  The opening is this Thursday at Seattle Art Museum for the Brain Injury Alliance of Washington (BIAWA) which is showing some members' work.  Below is the "bio" that will be posted. I created it this spring during dark daze when it was really hopeful and inspiring to cull the success stories for most of the text.  Hope y'all appreciate it.

(FarmGirlWorks) is a two-time brain injury survivor. The first brain injury was a large acoustic neuroma (tumor) removed during a 17-hour surgery. The second was iatrogenic damage caused by Zoloft/sertraline withdrawal. The latter injury is the subject of this piece.

Over two years ago, she tapered in four weeks from psychiatric drugs on doctor’s advice, throwing her body into unimaginable chaos. Symptoms included suicidal anxiety, dark depression, nausea, “burning” skin, cognitive and memory disability, head pressure, headaches, brain zaps, dizziness, inner body tension (akathisia), extreme weight loss, and insomnia.  Only through the education and support from the forum SurvivingAntidepressants.org did she realize these were symptoms from withdrawal not “relapse.” Now, at 26 months, she sees the light at the end of this long, dark tunnel.

As drugs are a widespread cultural and societal problem in industrialized countries, there is finally more media attention. In the last year, mainstream news organizations like The New Yorker, The New York Times, the BBC, NPR, and The Guardian have investigated the effects of these drugs and the profit-gouging by pharmaceutical companies. She hopes that patients and prescribers educate themselves about the profound hazards of psychiatric drugs and make fully informed decisions.

@FarmGirlWorks you brought tears to my eyes. I am slowly following behind you. I am so glad that you are improving so much and your remaining symptom list is improving how wonderful. I to am improving but still in a very window and waves pattern which is still pretty scary. I still have terrible ruminating thoughts, suicidal thoughts, intrusive thoughts, negative thoughts and anxiety/hopelessness. But compared to last year so much better. But i am greatful to read of your success and the fact that your a two time brain injury survivor gives me even more hope as this is my secons protracted withdrawal and of course i get scared im permanently damaged. But with more and more success stories or healing stories i know that is not the case. Love and light your way❤

yes, congratulations! since I saw the announcement I've been wondering who became one. 😊

Currently taking Ramapril (blood pressure) 5 mg twice a day

Omeprazole 10 mg AM and 20 mg PM  (the taper has gone nowhere after the first cut)

Famotidine   once a day (and I still needs tums sometimes)

magnesium 200 mg at night

as of yesterday 2 fish oil capsules "EPA-DHA 1000"

off Lexapro as of 5/2018  - last dose had been 5 mg every other day for a couple years

highest dose had been 20 mg at which point I was diagnosed with Bipolar II, which went away when I cut the lexapro down to 15 mg.

I spent years on Paxil before Lexapro (can't remember dose), briefly on Effexor and Abilify and others I have forgotten. in fact, when I was diagnoses with BPII I was put on all kinds of things which made me feel so bad I stopped them cold turkey within maybe 3 or 4 weeks, thank goodness. since then I've known these pills were terrible and I weaned down the Lexapro with zero help or support over I'm not sure how many years.

She hopes that patients and prescribers educate themselves about the profound hazards of psychiatric drugs and make fully informed decisions.

for some reason I can't find the link...???

@Gridley and @RachelSusan, thank you, thank you. I am so honored. In an icky wave right now and feel especially like I need to be careful with my words so this was a nice confirmation that sometimes my words are okay 😆

On a side note, my kundalini yoga teacher's wife recently had a TIA (as I understand it, not a stroke but mimcs a stroke) and has had unfortunate angry outbursts, garbled speech, fatigue, and bad headaches. Familiar territory. She also dabbles in psych drugs, not sure which ones. Ugh. Anyways, a lot of folks have gotten mad at her behavior and distanced themselves or cut off completely. Familiar territory again. It has given me so much more actual compassion for her having experienced this. So I am paying it forward and helping her out when I can as there have been several unexpected angels in my journey and I hope to be one for her.

You went through a very unfortunate situation of your own but are able to use what you learned to help someone else. The fact that you are able to find some good in what was undoubtedly a horrible situation in your past strikes me as being amazing occurrence..  Good for you. The fact that you are doing this while in a bad wave is even more profound. I am impressed. I hope you come out of the wave soon, a window opens for you and warm sunshine comes flooding through.

@RachelSusan: Well, I am still going through it much to my chagrin. But I do have empathy for people who lose people because of, as I fondly call it, Crazy Hurt Brain. Obviously, based on my posts crying out to the gods about the grueling isolation esp when in a wave. And the art I did which was just as much of a way to educate (and it truly was a good tool) as it was ego-driven to say, "See? I'm not crazy. Other people are going through this too."

I hope the wave ends soon too. Thanks. Planning a trip with my bio-father and that is no small amount of stress. He says I am in charge of logistics and he'll do whatever I want but cagily somehow gets exactly what he wants (he has the upper hand here having lectured and written books about communication). I liken it to doing jiu-jitsu with yourself in a mirror: you can't do a surprise move because it is your reflection (or DNA in this case). It is fascinating though too.

Hope you are doing okay... how is it going for reals?

What a brilliant analogy.  Your wit is always impressive and I so enjoy it.

For reals, I am pretty good.  I think I have gotten this taper thing down to a system.  It took me a few years to learn how to do it but now I've got it.   I do hate the length of this process, like everybody else here.  Currently I taper every five weeks and I know that from approximately day ten to about day twenty I will have mild symptoms.  I liken it to knowing I am going to have a cold every five weeks. It sure beats what I went through cold turkey and it sure beats what I went through trying to stabilize.

I hope you pull out of this wave soon. Down with CHB (Crazy Hurt Brain).

27 month update, fast taper from sertraline/zoloft:

Been in a bit of a depression the past few weeks. Not as deep as last year and the SI has been fleeting. I still give myself "deadlines," like the end of this year, if this bs does not end. But I genuinely have good trips coming up with newfound father so shuffling off this mortal coil is not an option (although planning is contributing to anxiety). Most of all, I will be damned if psych drugs beat me. Went to Pride events this weekend to cheer up. It generally worked. Drag queens and bubbles always make me smile. However, ran into some people that disappeared during WD and that felt, well, complicated. We were genuinely glad to see each other but I still feel betrayed. Maybe I always will, idk.

Symptoms are mainly psychological -- anxiety and depression -- but there is still head pressure and headaches and I have felt like a shell walking through existence, not connecting to people or daily environment. Recently likened it to being a "Stepford Wife" just smiling but a fraction of a second too late because it is for show not for real. But today at the Pride Parade, felt almost too giddy. My friend was genuinely high on cannabis and you would have thought it was the reverse. I seem to remember in success stories that the modulating of emotions was an issue at one point. WD sucks, but the process is genuinely interesting when you reflect upon it and how it changes with (lots and lots of) time.

Also had this interview come out this weekend. SA is mentioned a couple times. Spoiler alert: my real name is revealed 😜 I was hoping for a more mainstream city paper article but this was a true honor.

Wow.  That you were able to go to Pride!  That is amazing isn't it?  That crowd and all.

I understand about the odd emotions.  They are disturbing.  Feeling good can feel too good.  I'm having very strong feelings tonight.  It's 5:20 am.  I need to distract because I'm profoundly sad, but seeing that you are doing so well helps me.  We will be ok.

I haven't read the article about you.  I don't want to sign up for something else right now.  It won't let me read it otherwise.  I hope that article makes you feel heard and that it helps others.
