Magnesium, nature's calcium channel blocker

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I have problèms with bad neuro-emotions : dépression, restlessness, rage...

Today I took a bath with lavanda essential oïl and it was good for me.

I have seen that baths with Epsom salt could relax.

I wonder me if it is possible to have bad réactions with baths with Epsom salt?

Thank you. :)

I've tried taking 25mg-100mg magnesium glycinate and citrate. I've also tried 266mg magnesium oxide, which didn't cause any problems (I think) but I wasn't sure it was benefiting me either.   I tried

Thank you for the information!

I myself find that I cannot take magnesium , even in low doses.  It actually makes me feel worse and more anxious.  Also I get tingly and feel weird.   Maybe it is the magnesium you are reacting to ju

With magnesium it is quite possible to get too much of a good thing, which will lead to a paradoxical reaction.  Epsom salts baths are usually a good thing as long as you don't over do them. Use only a cup of salts in the bath and limit them to every other day and you should be fine.  If you see an increase in anxiety the do even less.

20 years on Paxil starting at 20mg and working up to 40mg. Sept 2011 started 10% every 6 weeks taper (2.5% every week for 4 weeks then hold for 2 additional weeks), currently at 7.9mg. Oct 2011 CTed 15oz vodka a night, to only drinking 2 beers most nights, totally sober Feb 2013.

Since I wrote this I have continued to decrease my dose by 10% every 6 weeks (2.5% every week for 4 weeks and then hold for an additional 2 weeks). I added in an extra 6 week hold when I hit 10mg to let things settle out even more. When I hit 3mgpw it became hard to split the drop into 4 parts so I switched to dropping 1mgpw (pill weight) every week for 3 weeks and then holding for another 3 weeks.  The 3 + 3 schedule turned out to be too harsh so I cut back to dropping 1mgpw every 4 weeks which is working better.

Current dose 0.000mg 04-15-2017

A lot of my own research on the general web about magnesium (and most supplements really) suggest that our first source should be to try and increase food sources of minerals. I'm also learning that magnesium is not good if you over do it. I'm trying to eat more food sources of magnesium (bananas, avocado, almonds) but I'm still wondering if I should add a supplement too given current neurological circumstnaces. Does anyone have any experience with how to balance/manage these? I'm using the same relative strategy for omega 3's with chia seeds, walnuts, etc. but that's a different thread ;)

I take 500 mg of magnesium per day but haven't noticed that it's helped any of my awful withdrawal symptoms.  Same with Omega 3 fish oil...I take it but haven't received any noticeable benefit.

Doctor's Best also offers a high-quality chelated magnesium glycinate.

I've found one of the recommended brands on Amazon at  lower dosages, which would help me start closer to the 25mgs recommended.

Doctor's Best High Absorption Magnesium Glycinate Lysinate, 100% Chelated, TRACCS, Not Buffered, Headaches, Sleep, Energy, Leg Cramps, Non-GMO, Vegan, Gluten Free, Soy Free, 100 mg, 240 Tablets.

Ingredients

Magnesium (elemental) (from 2,000 mg magnesium glycinate lysinate chelate) 100 mg, Microcrystalline cellulose, croscarmellose sodium, magnesium stearate (vegetable source), stearic acid, modified cellulose (coating).

I'm just not sure what the "LYSINATE" Means.  It seems to "pop up" with the glycinate in other formulas as well, is this ok?

I don't know what it means. It has some association with lycine and glycine.

Please be VERY careful buying anything consumable on Amazon.  I used to be an Amazon seller and it's extremely easy for counterfeiters to sell bogus items, and Amazon does nothing to try and prevent this.  Here are some tips to avoid counterfeit items in general: Every time you order, check the RECENT reviews and make sure nobody says anything about the product looking different from how it used to look, or looking sketchy. Look at customer pictures.  When you get the product, examine the label carefully with a magnifying glass and make sure there are no typos (misspelled words).  If it comes in a box, make sure the lot number on the box matches the bottle. If possible, call the manufacturer and validate the lot number.  Buying counterfeit batteries is one thing but with supplements please be careful. 💗

Oh and "Amazon's Choice" is a meaningless designation.  It is assigned by a computer.

1991 -> 2001 various SSRIs for depression (10 years)

2001 -> 2017 celexa, lexapro for depression plus Abilify (6 years)

2017 - celexa causes increasing flu-like symptoms (body aches, fatigue, malaise, syncope)

2017 - bad Dr switches me to Pristiq, Luvox, Zoloft.  They all cause flu-like symptoms eventually.  Switch to desipramine (tricyclic)

2018 - switch to imipramine 75mg which eventually causes worsening flu-like symptoms. taper off Abilify

2018 - November - feel like I am really developing serotonin toxicity.  Decide I have to get off everything ASAP.  taper off imipramine, going from 75 mg to 2.5 mg over 2  months

2019 - Jan - bridge to Prozac. taper from 10 mg to 1 mg over 3 months.  Last dose end of March (alternating days)

2019 - March experience brain zaps but not too bad. They eventually go away in April/May

2019 - March - August - I developed leg/nerve pain which became increasingly debilitating over time. Saw a ton of doctors. No physical explanation. Drs rule out MS, fibro, neurological issues.  MRIs, xrays, chiro. 2019, September - Leg pain has worsened to where I can barely walk across the room.  Reinstate imipramine at 2 mg

2019 - October - Reduce imipramine gradually to 0.04 mg.  feel a bit better.  2019 - November  Start Trileptal 37 mg.  Start seeing improvement in mobility, pain decrease

2019 - December - feeling about 50% better.  Still experiencing w/d symptoms and/or side effects. Waking at 5 am each morning feeling shivery, nausea. Legs feel like they are plugged in to a socket.  Zaps, aches, tingles, stinging.  Still can't walk or drive.  Ears ringing, brain tingling, brain full of bees.

2020 - mid-January - setback, withdrawal/side effects getting worse.  Discontinue Trileptal.  2020 March reinstate Trileptal 20 mg, reduce to 10mg

Thanks Laura!

I emailed the Doctor's best company directly for more info on the  lycine and glycine issue, I will post when I have a reply.

They also have what is supposedly a "brain formula" magnesium:   Magtein® magnesium-L-threonate :

Doctor’s Best Brain Magnesium uses magnesium-L-threonate from Magtein® which is a unique and highly bioavailable magnesium capable of crossing the blood-brain barrier.*

"According to animal research, the Magtein® magnesium-L-threonate in Doctor’s Best Brain Magnesium has been shown to effectively raise magnesium levels in the brain, in contrast to other magnesium compounds. Of six magnesium compounds studied, researchers found that magnesium-L-threonate was the superior compound able to enhance memory."

If interested, You can read more about this particular formulation at their website:   https://www.drbvitamins.com/products/brain-magnesium/drb-00283

Does anyone know if it's 'normal' for magnesium glycinate powder to have a very strong fishy taste? I poured the contents of two capsules into a water bottle this morning, and the taste was horrendous. I googled around but didn't find anything definitive.

Thanks all.

My previous drug history was confusing, so I deleted it in favour of the following summary, as best I can recall:

2017 - Jun 2019: olanzapine, dose erratic, ranging from 1.25 to 2.5mg per day.

2017 - Jun 2019: klonopin, dose erratic, ranging from 0.0625mg twice a day to 0.25mg twice a day.

2017 - Jun 2019: gabapentin, dose erratic, ranging from 200 to 300mg per day.

Date uncertain: Lamotrigine, small amount for two months, C/T.

Jun 2019: admitted to hospital after months of severe rage (which I am certain was caused by akathesia, but no doctor caught it). Doctors cold-turkeyed all drugs, I submitted to 10 courses of ECT, and was put on 50mg of seroquel at bedtime.

Jul 2019 - Feb 2020: reduced seroquel sporadically from 50mg to 18.75mg.

Apr 19, 2020: Reduced seroquel from 18.75mg to 16.5mg.

I have never tastes magnesium glycinate. Glycine has a pleasant sweet taste.

If you don't like the taste, how about adding something, such as lemon or a little honey?

We have recommended magnesium citrate for sipping in water. It has a citrusy taste.

Thanks, Altostrata. I could add a sweetener, but I'm more concerned that the product has gone rancid. I'm going to try contacting the manufacturer and see what they can tell me.

I contacted the manufacturer, and they said magnesium glycinate definitely tastes awful, so I guess it's not the best choice for sipping in unflavoured water.

Tomorrow is supposed to be the first day of my Venlafaxine 10% taper. I started taking a magnesium supplement two days ago and experience some bad reactions. My anxiety levels (that has been quite tolerable) has worsened a bit. But the worst is that I nearly have not been able to sleep for the past two nights. The first day I took 100 mg at noon, and the second day 50 mg at noon. The supplement has added B6.

Should I try 25 mg today or just stop them for now? Anyone with experience?

2001 - 2012 Sertralin, Citalopram, Venlafaxine, Escitalopram, Buspar, Citalopram, Lamotrigin, Bupropion, Mianserin.

2012 - 2020 Venlafaxine. Varying dosages up and down again between 75 mg and 37.5 mg

2020 - Venlafaxine 13 may 33,8 mg ; 10 june 30,9 mg ; 16 aug 27,3 mg ; 13 sep 24,6 mg ; 11 oct 22,1 mg ; 8 nov 19,9 mg

I'd be stopping it straight away.  B vitamins can be activating, especially B6.  I also would wait for a bit before making the venlafaxine reduction.  Let things settled before you make any changes.  Only ever make one change at a time.

Try to get some magnesium which is just magnesium, and only try a small dose to see how you react.  Note that some combine calcium and magnesium, but the calcium counteracts the magnesium.

Thank you @ChessieCat

I will try to find a magnesium without added vitamins. Do you think I should put off the reduction until I can stabilize with magnesium and omega-3? This might take some time, but I understand the need to do do controlled changes.

2001 - 2012 Sertralin, Citalopram, Venlafaxine, Escitalopram, Buspar, Citalopram, Lamotrigin, Bupropion, Mianserin.

2012 - 2020 Venlafaxine. Varying dosages up and down again between 75 mg and 37.5 mg

2020 - Venlafaxine 13 may 33,8 mg ; 10 june 30,9 mg ; 16 aug 27,3 mg ; 13 sep 24,6 mg ; 11 oct 22,1 mg ; 8 nov 19,9 mg

It really depends on your own situation.  If you need to reduce your drug for a reason, then that would be a priority.  If not, then it might be better to get yourself set up with the magnesium and omega 3 before commencing your taper.

I took one of these tablets two nights ago and I'm still feeling the side effects. Slight headache (that awful weird head feeling) a bit shaky and thumping heart 😥

After reading this thread it seems the dose is WAY too high even if I only took half a tablet. Am I right in thinking this?

Any advice please.

Each tablet contains:
Magnesium amino acid chelate (Meta Mag® - Magnesium diglycinate) 500mg
Equiv. elemental Magnesium 50mg
Magnesium amino acid chelate 750mg

If this is the only change that you have made, then any issues are more than likely to be from the tablet.  Because you have taken a complex it is not possible to know for sure what you have reacted to.

However, B vitamins, especially B6, can be activating.  See hypersensitive-to-b-vitamin-or-b-vitamin-complex

I also suggest that you use a search engine and add survivingantidepressants.org to the search term and find the SA topics for the other ingredients.

To be honest I didn't even notice the B6 😥

Don't think I'll take one again in the near future. Very unpleasant.

@Nevertoolate

When I last bought my magnesium I was trying to find a brand that was cheaper, but they all had something added and yes, B6 was in some of them.

Keep an eye open for the ones which contain calcium.  To get the benefit from magnesium they need to be take about 2 hours apart.

I buy Swisse brand. (no affiliation)

Thank you so much for the tips.

Should've stuck with Swisse I've used their products in the past and always liked them.

So calcium and magnesium are better taken separately?  Is that what you mean?

What mg magnesium ones do you use please?

Yes, if you are taking magnesium for the calming effect.  If you look you will see that this topic it is titled Magnesium natures calcium channel blocker.

@Altostrata It seems so strange that someone would have a paradoxical reaction to magnesium but I guess I have.  I frequently have paradoxical reactions to things; I don't know why. I took 250 mg of magnesium Monday night and had weird sensations. I didn't take anything else that night so it had to be the magnesium. I felt like it was trying to calm me down but at the same time it was stimulating. I had skin tingling and slight restless leg sensations. I did get to sleep but it was all very strange. I had high hopes for magnesium because it is so necessary and I was hoping it would calm me down and help me sleep. Is there any way I would get used to it? Perhaps if I took a very small dose?

On Prozac since 2004, 10 mg

Began to taper, 2016, first time cold turkey

unsuccessful, so soon after tried again

kept having to go back on medication due to withdrawals

tried to do it myself as couldn't find a dr to help me

Currently on taper #4 from 2016, having changed to Lexapro and starting November 2018 from 5 mg

As of April 2020 I am at 1/5th of a mg (.2 mg)

@ChessieCat  thanks. The capsules I have are 100 mg of elemental magnesium, since they are magnesium glycinate (500 mg total). Is that what you mean, to start with a 100 mg capsule? I opened up the capsule and tried to divide it into quarters because I don't have a drug scale. Might not be a bad idea to get one - does anyone have a good one they could recommend?

Do you think it is the magnesium that gave me problems- it wouldn't be the glycine, would it? Has anyone ever had trouble with glycine? I always assumed glycine to be so mild and calming.

If you get a bad reaction, take less magnesium at a time.

It is not necessary to be exact with magnesium like it is with psychiatric and some other drugs.  You do not need to get a scale to weigh the magnesium.

You could see if the contents dissolve in water.

First thing to do is to try starting with a small amount.  Taking magnesium for our purpose (ie during tapering and withdrawal) it is better taking throughout the day, not as one daily dose.

Yes, I had a very similar experience on less than 25mg of magnesium glycinate.  Had gone a couple of months without any major symptoms. The next morning I woke up with full-body vibrations along with my arms jerking side to side (first and only time this has ever happened). The body vibrations lasted 24/7 for two days then went away quickly.

I took magnesium glycinate for the first time yesterday. It was 600mg total throughout the day and had my first brain zap at night but not sure if it's related. Is this common? I read quite a few posts on here and found 1 user suspect she had brain zaps from magnesium but couldn't find any others.

I'm going to try a smaller amount today.

Started SSRIs and Adderall in 2003.

June 2019 - quit 15mg Adderall XR, no problems

August - October 2019 - tapered Prozac from 40mg to 0mg with no WD symptoms

January 2020 - WD started

January 2020 reinstated 15mg Adderall XR, taken as needed, about 3 times a week

Early June 2020 - reinstated 5mg Prozac, increased to 20mg, decreased to 5mg. Increased Adderall XR to daily usage of 15mg

Mid June 2020 - increased to 10mg Prozac

August 13, 2020 - decreased to 5mg Prozac

Sept 5, 2020  - decreased to 10mg Adderall

Sept 15, 2020 - decreased to 5mg Adderall

October 1, 2020 - decreased to 0 mg Adderall

I have tried the magnesium glycinate because it's supposed to be the best for sleep, but I found that 120 mg at night gave me very weird dreams and made me groggy the next day. I would like to try it again, but I would definitely take a lower dose or split it up over the day. I am now taking a magnesium that works for me without any side effects. It's called Tri-Magnesium, and contains mag citrate, mag oxide, mag malate and Krebs cycle acid. I take one capsule of 300 mg.

It's worth it to do some research on magnesium, because there are many different types out there, and each one works a bit differently.

Celexa - 20 mg May 2015 - March 2016 (Felt quite good)..... Celexa taper from May 2016 - Nov 2016.....Depression and Anxiety returned June 2017

July, 2017: Zoloft = 25 mg;  Aug. 2017 = 37.5 mg; Nov. 2017 = 50 mg thru Jan. 23, 2018.

Jan. 2018 - May 6, 2019 = taper Zoloft from 50 mg to 12.5 mg.  Aug. 11, 2019 - felt so bad that I reinstated at 25mg. Hold at this dose until Feb. 3, 2020

Feb. 4, 2020 = reduce dose to 21.875 mg. Hold for 10 weeks. April 14, 2020 = 18.75 mg. Hold for 10 weeks.

June10, 2020 - start cycle of 2 weeks to taper slowly from old dose to new dose, then hold at new dose for 6-7 weeks.

June 23, 2020  = 16.666 mg.........August 26, 2020 = 14.75 mg ....... October 28, 2020 = 13.15 mg

2021: Jan. 1 = 11.85 mg....Feb. 26 = 10.5 mg....April 23 = 9.3 mg....May 28 = 8.01 mg

Anyone that has the negative reaction to magnesium, how long did it take to wear off? I took 250 mg two days ago and 125 mg last night. Had facial flushing, little bit of a feeling of a stupor and worst of all massive depresssive feeling, lethargy, difficulty thinking. It's always hard to sort out.. there are so many variables but I'm pretty sure magnesium was a big contributing factor.

Diagnosed bipolar in 2000 at 18, following manic episode precipitated by high dose, 250 mg, sertaline.

Past history: lithium and/or other mood stabilizers plus ssris, benzos - 2001-2010; lithium and adderall- 2011 - 2018, 900 mg to 0 mg in about 6 months, stopped Nov 2018; fluoxetine - 20 mg spring 2018 - May 2019,  May - 10 mg, Nov - 0 mg; Dec 2019 ssri withdrawal started

Recent history:

Lithium: Sept 2020-900 mg;

Seroquel:

If the symptoms are from magnesium, they should go away in a few days. Excess magnesium is flushed out of your system quickly.

If you want to take it, frequent small doses are more effective than a large dose. Please read this topic from the beginning.
