Moderator note: link to benzo forum thread - ChrisB: New Here, starting tapering soon

Hi, brand new and for the first time since deciding to taper off long term/low dose xanax, am not terrified as when reading posts on other forums - more heartfelt thanks for that than I can say. I'm 57, been on .25 xanax for 20+ years but typically only one daily. The past year I've apparently not been holding at that or the stress of returning to school full-time and becoming an empty nester/new house has done me in! Last 6 months or so, have had probably 20 days where I've taken a second pill. The past 25 years I've volunteered as a Search and Rescue K9 Handler, including leadership positions - rewarding but also stessful; I still dealt pretty darn well until, again, just recently.  Found a pharmacy that will compound, scared but looking forward to finding me again.

Xanax 0.25 mg originally prescribed TID PRN since 1987, cut to 1-2 daily as needed throughout 1990-1997

Quit cold turkey October 1996 due to pregnancy - no WD symptoms that I can remember

Restarted xanax 0.25mg 1999, originally intermittently and, at least past 10 years, one daily up until...

January 2017 started taking a second tab as needed, about 25-30 days

Hi ChrisB, welcome to SA. We have a members only benzo forum where you can post and get advice on tapering xanax. Sometimes dosage adjustments need to be made to get you in the right place to start a taper.  The guys over there will set you on the right path. It is great that you have a compounding pharmacy, loads of members make liquid for their taper from tablets which is easty when you get the hang of it but not as easy as popping a pill with just the right dose!

Here is the link to the benzo forum. You can copy your post over there. They have links to information that will help you on your journey off xanax. It is a long road but it does have an end and you will get to it eventually.

It will help if you can fill in your signature with any drugs and doses. You can find it in your account settings, click your name at the top of the screen.

Lesson learned, slow down taper at lower doses. Taper no more than 10% of CURRENT dose if possible

Thank you mammaP, I'll check out the Benzo forum asap. I tried following your directions for the signature but - sorry, not too computer literate despite taking online courses all last year! - couldn't figure out where even though I went to my profile.

We have until the 14th. Feb 2018.

URGENT REQUEST Please consider submitting  for the petition on Prescribed Drug Dependence and Withdrawal currently awaiting its third consideration at the Scottish Parliament. You don't even have to be from Scotland. By clicking on the link below you can read some of the previous submissions but be warned many of them are quite harrowing.

http://www.parliament.scot/GettingInvolved/Petitions/PE01651

Please tell them about your problems taking and withdrawing from antidepressants and/or benzos.

Send by email to petitions@parliament.scot and quote PE01651 in the subject heading. Keep to a maximum of 3 sides of A4 and you can't name for legal reasons any doctor you have consulted. Tell them if you wish to remain anonymous. We need the numbers to help convince the committee members we are not isolated cases. You have until mid February. Thank you

None of the published articles shed light on what ssri's ... actually do or what their hazards might be. Healy 2013.

This is so true, with anything you get on these drugs, dependance, tapering, withdrawal symptoms, side effects, just silent. And if there is something mentioned then their is a serious disconnect between what is said and reality!

"Every time I read of a multi-person shooting, I always presume that person had just started a SSRI or had just stopped."  Dr Mosher. Me too!

Over two decades later, the number of antidepressant prescriptions a year is slightly more than the number of people in the Western world. Most (nine out of 10) prescriptions are for patients who faced difficulties on stopping, equating to about a tenth of the population. These patients are often advised to continue treatment because their difficulties indicate they need ongoing treatment, just as a person with diabetes needs insulin. Healy 2015

I believe the ssri era will soon stand as one of the most shameful in the history of medicine. Healy 2015
