The tinnitus calms down after you take Lamictal?

What's your history with Lamictal?

Does the tinnitus increase when you take Zoloft?

Please describe your daily symptom pattern, when you take your drugs, and their dosages.

This is not medical advice. Discuss any decisions about your medical care with a knowledgeable medical practitioner.

Hi there,

Earlier this week, I was nearly crippled from over-doing it last Saturday; I have arthritis in my feet, wore the wrong shoes to an event (vanity at work) and could not walk w/i hours.  I literally had to ice my feet for 5 days.  I had had 4 months of physical therapy for this condition and I had been so much better.  I back-slid so far I thought it was going to be 5 months to heal again.

Guess what?  I am almost back to normal foot pain;  I was fearing the worst and the worst didn't happen.  I kept telling myself I would heal faster this time and I actually did!  The power of positive thinking at work.

This tinnitus will go away...it will...keep telling yourself that...it is evidence of healing.

  • tapered valium w/ long holds to 12.74 mg. from a high of approximately 20-30 mg/day
  • 2015-2023 tapered trileptal to 98 mg.  had to completely stop tapering due to multiple chronic, serious health issues
  • currently 2024 still on 98 mg. trileptal and 4 mg. remeron
  •   Currently on benzo hold as I have to cross-over from brand-name valium to generic diazepam.   The diazepam is way weaker and brought on severe acute w/d
  • Current dose of diazepam is 7.9 and valium is 6.6.  I had to up-dose the total valium/diazepam from 12.74 to 14.5 where I have stayed since June 2023.  I am crossing over to generic at a somewhat tolerable rate of .3mg/month after about 2 months of trial/error w/ updosing.  I am not currently tapering; will continue to cross over.

I had a headache like that last week. I had ice packs on my head. I tried hard not to "catastrophize." It was gone the next day. We all over-think this stuff because these drugs have made us hyper-vigilant. This, too, shall pass. Hope that doesn't sound condescending; I've been in this hell for a very long time so I have learned a lot of hard lessons. You can curse me if you still have it tomorrow!

Well, I am not a mod or an expert, but I, too, am on a mood stabilizer (trileptal) as well as a benzo. When you change one thing, you change another. It makes it all more complicated, but many many people are successful and you have come so far, you will make it too. Those of us who are poly-drugged are harder to predict what is causing what, and it is harder to figure things out, but not impossible.

Posting in your thread is how you get help, not starting a new thread in the intro forum. It's self help here, mods are all volunteers.

I suggest that you consider going to the emergency room if you think your health is in jeopardy. We cannot help you over the internet.

Send me a PM instead, or just post in your topic, it rises to the top of the main page for everyone to see. All the info someone needs to give you some help is in your original topic and we can't go looking for it.

You aren't having any of those things, trust me.

My response above sounds cold but Weasel contacted me.

People taking the same drugs for some time are relatively stable and are not likely to all of a sudden get serotonin syndrome. UNLESS you add in another serotonin enhancing drug into the mix.

As the levels of drugs change, your body reacts and not in a reasonable way. Don't know the why for of the headache and weakness but unless things really persist or become really bad it's a good idea to try food, rest and a stable routine (which involves taking your meds on time) and wait and see.

As always, we are not doctors. We have a thread about docs who might be helpful for WD syndrome, look it up I cannot do it from my tablet. Just be aware that docs are likely to give you MORE meds and really mess things up but hey, who are we to say?

If you think you need medical care you have to go get it, we cannot do anything over the internet. My RX for panic is sea salt caramel ice cream. Works every time.

Hi Weasel. I just wanted you to know that I understand what you are going through. I just reinstated my med and I am having some trouble also. I think the key is to find a dose you can be stable on. I'm still trying to figure it out as I just updosed last night but just a tiny bit. Stable to me is not having bad symptoms. My bad symptom is nausea. Don't worry too much about the tinnitus. I have it too and it used to make me anxious. Then the anxiety would make it louder. The tinnitus will get better, mine did. Now I could care less about it. Meds/withdrawal/anxiety/colds can make it worse, but it always improved with a little time.

Big Hugs to you,

Marie

Hi Weasel, I'm sorry that you were having a difficult time, and we seemingly weren't there for you.  CW5600's response was spot on - we are a volunteer peer support site, not real time, so if you need help right away, please seek the support of friends, family, and the ER if you feel you are having a health crisis.  We do step away from our computers and try to live our lives while also trying to heal from these drugs :-)

You were having windows, so I think you are back in a wave.  With coming off Zoloft and then the morphine triggering withdrawal and then reinstating, your system is still trying to find stability, and with that comes the windows and waves.  Perhaps this will help; this video elegantly explains what is going on:

Started ADs back around 1995 after bad break-up, starting with Prozac.  Switched to Wellbutrin, and then to Effexor in 2002
Effexor XR 2002-2014 up to 225 mg at one point, down to 37.5 mg towards end but back up to 75 mg in 2014; now realize I had W/D as I dropped down, memory very poor about history.  Extreme emotions, poor concentration as I stepped back down, didn't connect the dots!
Summer 2014 reduced to 0 very quickly, was sick of anhedonia/sexual dysfunction due to meds, depression never controlled if not worse. Didn't recognize WD since symptoms built slowly (thought I had ADD! and menopausal on top of it), starting with severe sweats, very bad cog-fog and memory issues, culminating in weight loss, severe anxiety and depression, panic, severe apathy and insomnia by eight months off.  Saw p-doc who put me on Remeron, increased from 7.5 mg/day to 37.5 mg by May 22, 2015; still doing very badly though able to sleep.

June 1. 2015 Reinstated Effexor XR 37.5 mg, Remeron dropped to 30 mg PM. Immediate relief of symptoms, like nothing had ever happened!  Joined SA and began on advice of friend who recognized it was WD all along! Began tapering in July 2015.

Been tapering both meds ever since, focusing on one more than the other or doing no more than 5% of each per month.

12 mg Effexor and 5.8 mg Remeron (mirtazapine SolTabs to make a solution with OraPlus) as of 5/4/2017

Update 3/14/18: 2.9 mg Remeron and 6 mg Effexor; 6/10/18:  2.6 mg Remeron and 4.9 mg Effexor

Hi Weasel. I updosed .5 mg, so now I am on 1.5 mg. I feel good today, I hope it continues. It's good that you are having a lot of good days. You will only improve. I know it's hard when withdrawal hits you. I am going through the same now, but if we can stabilize somehow we can rest a while at the dose and continue later with tapering. It's difficult to know whether to updose or not. If you do try to updose only make small amounts. It might be just enough to make you feel a bit better.

Good luck and BIG HUGs,

Marie

You know everyone's different with their meds, sensitivies, etc. but I would hold if I were you. If I read your posts correctly you have reinstated for about 3 weeks. Give it some time to see if things improve. You have some good days so hopefully they will increase. I would not reduce at this point, it may make it worse. I don't have experience with Zoloft so maybe some others will chime in that have Zoloft experience.

Weasel.  The best thing you can do right now is to stay calm and not panic over your symptoms . They will follow a windows and waves pattern for quite a while. Changing the dose, will not make them automatically disappear. I know they can seem scary at the time, but if you start to see them as a pattern perhaps it will help you get through these times and not add secondary fear, which can exacerbate symptoms.

Have another read through this link, and watch the video link S.G. provided above. They will help you to understand more of what is happening in withdrawal.

The Windows and Waves Pattern of Stabilization

You weren't being intrusive :-)  We just aren't always immediately available.  I am glad you are doing better now.  AliG is right, that you need to prepare yourself for future situations like this by adopting some strategies to deal with the panic.  As Claire Weekes said, bewilderment leads to fear, and freaking out over symptoms just adds fuel to the fire.  So, Acknowledge that you are experiencing withdrawal symptoms, Accept that they are a sign of healing and are temporary, and let the anxiety about it Float on by.

June 1. 2015 Reinstated Effexor XR 37.5 mg, Remeron dropped to 30 mg PM.

In the early days of wd I could not eat... drank a lot of baby electorlyte replacement could not tolerate the adult replacement... and boiled veggies carrots potato green beans added later... I ate green beans every day for a year then switched to a mixture of green veggies asparagus broccoli brussel sprouts  ... it took about 3 years to get to the mixed veggie version.

There is something called ensure.. it is a meal replacement I was given when my mouth was wired shut to heal a broken jaw it will keep you alive at least.  I also worked with disabled kids and some of them have only this as food as they are fed threw tubes... GI tubes ..water and ensure.  It is not premium nutrition but it is good enough.  If you can add some all bran the sticks not the buds it may help you.. even a teaspoon counts...

At times when I can't eat I will buy ensure I have it in the house all the time now... ;it is not my first choice but good to have on hand.

You can also make your own electrolyte replacement recipes are online I was way to sick to do that then.. or ever to read really.

Depending on your gut symptoms it may be worth looking at some probiotics especially if you have been on any antibiotics...

if that is the case write back I will tell you that story grim as it is .

peace

Had a car accident in 85
Codeine was the pain med when I was release from hosp continuous use till 89
Given PROZAC by a specialist to help with nerve pain in my leg 89-90 not sure which year
Was not told a thing about it being a psych med thought it was a pain killer no info about psych side effects I went nuts had hallucinations. As I had a head injury and was diagnosed with a concussion in 85 I was sent to a head injury clinic in 1990 five years after the accident. I don't think they knew I had been on prozac I did not think it a big deal and never did finish the bottle of pills. I had tests of course lots of them. Was put into a pain clinic and given amitriptyline which stopped the withdrawal but had many side effects. But I could sleep something I had not done in a very long time the pain lessened. My mother got cancer in 94 they switched my meds to Zoloft to help deal with this pressure as I was her main care giver she died in 96. I stopped zoloft in 96 had withdrawal was put on paxil went nutty quit it ct put on resperidol quit it ct had withdrawal was put on Effexor... 2years later celexa was added 20mg then increased to 40mg huge personality change went wild. Did too fast taper off Celexa 05 as I felt unwell for a long time prior... quit Effexor 150mg ct 07 found ****** 8 months into withdrawal learned some things was banned from there in 08 have kept learning since. there is really not enough room here to put my history but I have a lot of opinions about a lot of things especially any of the drugs mentioned above.
One thing I would like to add here is this tidbit ALL OPIATES INCREASE SEROTONIN it is not a huge jump to being in chronic pain to being put on an ssri/snri and opiates will affect your antidepressants and your thinking.

As I do not update much I will put my quit date Nov. 17 2007 I quit Effexor cold turkey.

The only reaction to electrolyte is I could stand up right .. and not be so dizzy and walk.

The one thing I missed was chicken broth I had chicken and beef consume good old campbells with the msg and all something I would not touch now... but I did not have much energy to get food... boiling carrots was ok all was just a small amount of food.  The ensure I used when my stomach hurt from lack of food and I felt like my guts were eating themselves.. it left an odd taste in my mouth but I was already so sick ... I doubt I would have noticed much of a reaction.

I had the runs and could not keep food down for months... this was what I did..

At one point when green jello type stool was a step up ... I was told to take 3 acidophilous a day in one cup of apple sauce open the capsules and mix with apple sauce which has pectin to stop runs and help the probiotic grow in the gut... I did this 3 times so 9 capsule a day total for a month it helped... was a good turn around then... other gut issues followed.. it was after the probiotics I added the green food.. veggies.

sorry if that is gross but whatever works.

Weasel, I moved your post from the reinstatement topic to here because your question is about your specific case.

Yes, all the symptoms you've mentioned are withdrawal symptoms and as such, can continue post-reinstatement.  Reinstatement works for some people and doesn't for others. Have a look at post #9 on page 1 of this thread. Shep has quoted some relevant information by Altostrata.
