Im totally with u on the stabalizeation staz ,the longer I go with not being stable the worse  the outcome for me I believe ,I avoid everyone because im so triggered.

Out on my hill walk in the cold yesterday and I was overwhelmed with depression ,its exausting so I eat the best I can .the worst part is the extreme irritability I have .I cant figure out this aceptance that a lot of members talk about .im so unstable.

I gave up alcohol a good year before this withdrawal hit and little did I know giving up alcohol was nothing compared to this misery .

Take care and we got to stay strong

Alcohol free since February 2015

I can't find acceptance almost impossible PB and don't know what I need to do. Stability seems almost mythical to me. I've a lovely wife and two grown children and my wedding anniversary is tuesday. I'm dreading Christmas and the my anniversary, really frightened about it especially Tuesday when I'll be at home by myself for the day. I'm not irritable as I'm too doped up i guess. I too feel exhausted with little fight left after 19 months of depression and anxiety. I try to be strong, I try to have hope but nothing changes just endless days of suffering and I'm running out of fight tbh.

Update.

After much soul searching I've decided to start a daily microtaper from valium dropping 0.04mg per day from 12mg down to 11mg. Having started this  few days back I should hit 11mg around the 8th Jan and will then wait a week and start my journey down to 10mg.

At the same time my Seroquel is going to be dropped at 2mg per week or more if I can cope with it. The only sxs I get with Seroquel appears to be sleep problems and slight nausea but that was only happening when I was making big cuts on my way down to 25mg. I find seroquel forgiving that if things go wrong I respond to an updose immediately. I'm also on 2 other drugs that make me sleep as I'm still taking 15mg mirtazapine and 150mg of dosulepin so hopefully I'll be able to gently slide off of seroquel without too many difficulties.

I'm also pleased I've been able to stop drinking alcohol totally since 7th December and all is going well. I wasn't a big drinker by most standards bit figured in even small amounts it's not going to help my mood and hinder my recovery

Cheers

I had to stop my D taper and got back to 12mg. I only managed to drop 3% but the anxiety was extreme with christmas coming and my daughter being ill. It all was a bit much so back to 12mg and hold it there for a while and get s stable as i can before carrying on in January. Gutted I couldn't even cope with a 3% reduction and feel a bit of a failure.

Ok so I'm now down to 25mg and have been for the last 3 weeks so I've decided to get off of Seroquel before my Valium.  I was going to do it the other way around but i'm finding myself too sedated which is aggravating my depression.

I have read that Seroquel can actually cause depression so has anyone experienced this?

Hi Staz!!

I understand you’re desire to want to get off all that crap as soon as possible. It’s a lot and you’ve had a tough time of it.

First off though, don’t beat yourself up over not “being able to handle” a cut. It’s not your character, strength, or determination, that causes those hang ups. It’s your nervous system. You are NOT to blame for set backs. Ever. Our brains and CNS can only handle so much.

It sounds as though you may be having some increased stress right now too. It’s okay. Stress exacerbates our WD symptoms. Just rest for a bit.

Here is some of what I have learned throughout my journey:

It took me 3 years to taper one med. I had planned to be off all six meds in that time. Over those three years though, I came to realize I could plan all I wanted, but ultimately I had to listen to my brain and body.

I also learned that I needed to take special care of myself. I noticed you quit drinking! That’s awesome! I can’t drink anything. I know this because I’ve tried a couple of times and then feel like crap for several days after just 1 to 2 drinks.

Staying well hydrated and eating regularly scheduled meals is very important. Personally, I feel better if I avoid too much sugar and fat. I don’t go bonkers monitoring it, I just keep that in the back of my mind.

Sleep. Sleep is so important. Coming off any of these meds seems to mess with sleep. I have found that using an appropriately weighted blanket (one pound for every ten pounds that you weigh) helps me sleep through the night. It’s like a miracle!! They are expensive between $90-150 US but they are SO worth it! They also come in handy during meditation or when experiencing the dreaded anxiety that you have been having. Even just sitting with it on your lap is helpful.

Speaking of meditation, I feel so much better when I make meditation, guided meditation, sleep stories, guided relaxation, and breathing exercises a part of my daily routine. It may sound like Huey-buluey, but it’s so effective to learn to tune into your breath.

When I feel angry, or sad, but all I feel like doing is watching TV I choose movies and shows that are the opposite of those emotions: comedies, uplifting dramas, documentaries about something positive I’d like to know more about. A good one, if you have access, is the old Bob Ross painting shows. That guy is so damn chill!! Also, check out screaming goats on YouTube. Those crazy animals never get old!!

Well, I hope that some of my rambling has helped you in some way. Take care!!

Update - Still not settled from my quick drop of Quetiapine. Suffering increased depression and crying jags daily but still holding on just. i really don't want to up dose this med so will leave it to settle for another week before any decision on up dosing is made.

I've been surprised by my reaction as at this dose I thought it just acted like a giant antihistamine.

Staz, please don't rush through tapering Seroquel. You've made a big decrease in a short amount of time. Your nervous system is telling you it wants a rest from drug changes.

"Depression" can also be a side effect of benzos.

These surges of "depression" are a symptom. Please be patient, don't add to them with despair. They will fade in time. Do what you can to "change the channel" -- take up any calming activity. Be sure to get at least a half-hour of gentle exercise, such as walking, each day.

If I were you, I'd stay at 25mg for a good while, maybe a few months, to let your nervous system settle down, then taper very gradually. Perhaps for you a micro-taper of Seroquel would be best. Don't change more than one drug at a time!

This is not medical advice. Discuss any decisions about your medical care with a knowledgeable medical practitioner.

Hi Staz, I just realised I haven't stopped by for a while but you have been in my thoughts 😊 I'm sorry to read about your daughter.  Any kind of extra stress is extremely difficult to navigate and just adds to the w/d symptoms.  Add the stress of Christmas...well...it's a difficult time of year.

Valium is a tough one. From my experience when I reached lower doses it became more difficult.  Same with the clonazepam.  You are far from a failure...I think warrior is more appropriate! From my experience I would suggest leaving the Valium for the final taper.  I think your right to taper seroquel next. But please hold for a bit and then go slow.  I was taken off 300mg of seroquel over 3 weeks (before I was enlightened), I payed a heavy price and I believe I am still suffering the consequences. I also found the seroquel sedating and I was a zombie on the stuff.  Escitalopram can be stimulating, so once you taper the seroquel, hopefully the Valium will balance those effects.  I'm probably not making much sense. Not functioning very well today! K

Thanks for the advice Alto.

I have made some big changes over the course of the last year but I'm not sure I've been holding the Seroquel for a good month at 25mg and I'm thinking about a microtaper off of that as you suggest.

Since my poly drugging I've not had any real stability and you are bang on the V is the cause of my depression. I'm convinced it's perpetuated it and worsened it. I've also read Seroquel can do the same. All my meds are brakes and have made me even more lethargic which also fuels my depression. I'm not sure waiting any longer would help me as stabilisation just doesn't seem to work for me.

I'll think on the subject and your advice but I'm under pressure from my shrink who wants me off of this and in 25mg increments every 2 weeks so according to him I should have been off weeks ago. He also told me he thinks my depression in treatment resistant and wants me to consider ECT. From what I've read on ECT it's contradicted by both Dosulepin and V as they both increase the seizure threshold and have less favourable outcomes and higher relapse rate. It was nice to be told this the week before Christmas.

I'll consider my options before making any further moves drug wise.

Cheers

Thank you Kristine.

This has been the worst Christmas of my life.

I was too ambitious and started my V taper at a point in my life where I should have held until January at least. Seroquel will be my next taper (I've been off of escitalopram over a year) I think and I thank you for your warning. I've no intention of dropping Seroquel quickly but at 25mg I find it sedating. Add that to my other meds and it's no surprise I struggle to get moving and have no motivation.

V is going to be hard on me due to my reinstatement and previous usage so it will be a very slow process I think. Just a 3% drop caused me problems but the timing was all wrong so maybe that made things worse than they would otherwise be.

Cheers

Staz

I'm so sorry Staz 😞 If it's any consolation I spent half of Christmas Day in bed.  For some reason I thought you were still on escitalopram (fog brain - sorry!) so glad that is not the case.  Seroquel on its own is so sedating and debilitating...and with Valium  on board as well....

Thanks Stuckonmeds.

Really appreciate your support and advice. I think you are spot on with the timescale issue as well. I'm the type of person that sets goals and timescales only too easily and you are right that you have to listen to your body. Seroquel is a nasty drug so I'm keen to get off of it and was only given it for sleep initially and wasn't told is was an antipsychotic so no informed consent. It's Seroquel next then the beast that is V but not setting timescales from here on. I'll cut as and when my body feels it can cope and conservatively to start with.

Times of stress are also a bad time to start cutting. I've learned that the hard way these last few weeks.

Bad day today. Very low with no motivation or interest in anything. I feel so guilty as I've a lovely wife and two great children. Not sure how I'm ever going to get off these damaging medications. The thought of tapering off of V scares me after my failed attempt to start tapering.

Staz:

I am terrified about tapering Xanax. I got off Valium almost 2 years ago, and that was easy for me.

Are you on Valium, lyrica, and Escitalalopram? What dosage of Escitalalopram are you on? I'm on 2.5mg liquid.

I think I'll be ok on my Xanax. I'm just going to be more careful from now on. I guess my body said it wasn't needing it at that time because I've never forgotten to take it before. I've been taking it for about 15-20 years I think.

I hope your day gets better.

Hi Frogie.

I'm currently on 12mg Valium, 25mg Seroquel, 150mg Dosulepin and 15mg Mirtazapine.

I've been a year off of Escitalopram and 5 months off of Lyrica..

I'm glad you found Valium easy. I think it's driving my depression and I had a c/t from 15mg and lasted 4 weeks but my GP wouldn't reinstate to 15mg. Needless to say after a few weeks depression started again and I thought it was Lyrica causing it so tapered off finishing last July. Since I've had no improvement in my depression at all and dropped my Seroquel back to 25mg from 150mg between mid year and November. Again no relief from the depression.

I'm now suspecting that V is the culprit as it's a well known side effect after a few months of use.

Hi Staz:

Wow! You sound like me, going off so many meds all at once.

When you were on Escitalopram, did you get nauseous? I'm just curious because that's been my worst WD symptom. I only take 2.5mg Escitalopram and then the Xanax now. I'll be so glad to be off of both of them. But I had to save the hardest ones to WD from for last.

I hope you find relief in your symptoms.

Thanks for answering my questions.

I'd been on Escitalopram for about 5 months but cannot tolerate ssri's after going on and off of prozac many times successfully. It was my reaction to that prozac being added to mirtazapine that got me into hospital all as they'd tried V to stop my extreme reaction to this combo. The prozac was stopped and replaced by escitalopram 10mg. I had the same reaction  all the time the V was being fed to me like candy. The reaction of the consultant shrink was to drop my escitalopram down to 5mg and add in Lyrica as he decided I had GAD. So I left hospital after 16 days hooked on V (6 weeks use by then) and 300mg Lyrica, 15mg of Mirtazapine , 15mg Valium and 5 mg of escitalopram. I was forced off of V at 15mg and lasted nearly 4 weeks before reinstating at 12mg which really only worked partially. I dropped the escitalopram c/t from 5mg and didn't notice. My shrink then tried lofepramine for depression which didn't work but caused insomnia so he threw in Seroquel for sleep at 75mg and upped it to 150mg by mid year and added dosulepin. none of these interventions made me any better not did coming off of Lyrica.

I didn't feel anything coming off of escitalopram at all but my brain had been fried well before that so maybe it explains why I didn't feel it.

Where do I go from here is what I'm now debating. My quality of life is so low, I've lost my job but luckily my wife has stood by me.

The week before Christmas my shrink told me I had treatment resistant depression and the only other thing he could offer was ECT. I've since found out if you are on a long acting benzo like V the chances of success of ECT are small and the potential for bad side effects greater. I get the feeling having done the damage they'd rather I disappeared off of their case load.

Hi Staz:

I have nausea. I don't know if it's caused by the Escitalalopram, I took a heavy taper, or missing the dosage of Xanax.

I seem to get nauseous a lot. That's why I asked if you ever did.

I don't know what ECT is? I've taken classes on DBT and am getting ready to do CBT with my therapist.

You are very lucky your wife is helping you. My fiancé is standing by me also.

I hope you do well.  Please keep me up to date.

Take care,

Frogie xx

ECT is electro convulsive therapy. Basically they put electrodes on your head and zap you with a high voltage to induce a fit. Sometimes this can stop depression in a few sessions and is really a treatment of last resort here in the UK.

OH no way would I do that!

But if you feel comfortable doing it, then good luck.

I would talk to the mods on here before you do that though...

It's not something I'm about to volunteer to do Frogie although several members here have had first hand experience of it so I'd be interested in their opinions. As far as I can make out you shouldn't have it when on benzos which rules me out anyway. My shrink is an idiot for even suggesting it imho.

Your psychiatrist sounds like the one I was going to, a complete idiot.

I'm not going to him anymore. My dr is handling my meds. I like that much better, he knows exactly what's going on.

I'm glad you aren't going to do the ECT. Sounds too dangerous to me.

I hope you feel better soon.
