Hi moonpie no you are not doing anything wrong.

just bear in mind that all the mods are volunteers and this is the silly season after all.

its only socially challenged and vacation challenged people like myself who are reading threads at the moment.

be patient I’m sure others will be in soon.

We have until the 14th. Feb 2018.

URGENT REQUEST Please consider submitting  for the petition on Prescribed Drug Dependence and Withdrawal currently awaiting its third consideration at the Scottish Parliament. You don't even have to be from Scotland. By clicking on the link below you can read some of the previous submissions but be warned many of them are quite harrowing.

http://www.parliament.scot/GettingInvolved/Petitions/PE01651

Please tell them about your problems taking and withdrawing from antidepressants and/or benzos.

Send by email to petitions@parliament.scot and quote PE01651 in the subject heading. Keep to a maximum of 3 sides of A4 and you can't name for legal reasons any doctor you have consulted. Tell them if you wish to remain anonymous. We need the numbers to help convince the committee members we are not isolated cases. You have until mid February. Thank you

None of the published articles shed light on what ssri's ... actually do or what their hazards might be. Healy 2013.

This is so true, with anything you get on these drugs, dependance, tapering, withdrawal symptoms, side effects, just silent. And if there is something mentioned then their is a serious disconnect between what is said and reality!

"Every time I read of a multi-person shooting, I always presume that person had just started a SSRI or had just stopped."  Dr Mosher. Me too!

Over two decades later, the number of antidepressant prescriptions a year is slightly more than the number of people in the Western world. Most (nine out of 10) prescriptions are for patients who faced difficulties on stopping, equating to about a tenth of the population. These patients are often advised to continue treatment because their difficulties indicate they need ongoing treatment, just as a person with diabetes needs insulin. Healy 2015

I believe the ssri era will soon stand as one of the most shameful in the history of medicine. Healy 2015

As NZ mentioned, it is the "silly season" and some mods are on vacation. Also, we're getting 75 - 100 new members a month, so things stay really busy.

A couple things that will help us help you:

1. Please post your benzo questions in your benzo thread. I answered your most recent benzo questions here:

http://survivingantidepressants.org/topic/15934-moonpie-need-help-ativan-weight-tapering/?do=findComment&comment=321553

2. Please post your thyroid questions over in the thyroid thread.

Thyroid symptoms - hypothyroid, Hashimoto's

Note in Karma's post on that thread that there is an online thyroid group she recommends. If you haven't already joined, you may wish to do so, keeping in mind that you are also dealing with withdrawal issues (something they may or may not know about):

Thyroid symptoms - hypothyroid, Hashimoto's - Karma's post on NTH International group

And if you find helpful information and research there, please feel free to post what you find in the thyroid thread, as your information may very well help others.

Hi Moonpie:

I don't think you are doing anything wrong to get an answer. I think people are really busy this time of year.

My TSH is on the high side of the chart, but everything else is within normal range. My dr thinks it might be because I'm tapering and my body doesn't know what to do. We are just keeping an eye on it.

I know O2bhappy has thyroid issues. She may be able to help you.

Sorry I'm not much help. I hope you get an answer soon.

Moonpie:

Thanks, you are very caring too.

I have been through a lot lately. Most being my own fault. But I learned the hard way and now taking very good precautions so nothing happens again.

Like I said, my dr thinks my high TSH is because of tapering. I have to have it re-tested after the 1st of the year.

I hope we can keep in touch also. :)

You have a blessed New Year also.

Hi Moonpie:

I take 1mg Xanax 3 times a day. I know a lot. But the wacko psychiatrist put me on it.

I'm not tapering it until I'm done with Lexapro. But I have a question for you. On your Ativan, do you use a scale and cut the pills? Do you do a 10% cut a month?

I'm just trying to figure out how to do my Xanax when I'm ready. I have a really good scale.

Thanks for your help. I really appreciate it.

Take care,

I use a scale and a file.  I was doing 5% every two weeks until I found this sight and was suggested to do .001 in weight reduction every 4 days. That has worked great for me. I was on Zoloft and Xanax 2 years after my husband died and didn't have a lot of trouble coming off.  I went way to fast I see now but was following the Dr.  I had some moments but nothing like this!!! I guess I am sensitive to the ATivan. I still have Buspar and Lexapro to go!!  Moonpie

Thanks Moonpie:

I'm just trying to figure out how to taper my Xanax when the time comes. I will use a scale and go slow.

Please, whatever you do, go slow on Lexapro. I've made mistakes and it's cost me time and lots of symptoms. Just hold, and do a really slow taper. I was told Lexapro was like a tiger, don't pull its tail. It's very true!

I don't know anything about Buspar. But wish you luck!

I'm sorry to hear about your husband. You are very strong.

They are really good here. I take liquid Lexapro. It's so much easier that cutting pills. If your insurance will pay for it, it's worth it.

Do you have Medicare with prescrption? Or Medicaid? I think Medicaid will pay for it. Don't quote me though.

You can make your own liquid. You just get a better dosage. But Brassmonkey did it all by scale and is doing fantastic!

Yeah I did. It's a lot easier to measure, you get it accurate. Ask your pharpharmacy how much it is. It was cheaper here than the pills. I couldn't believe it.

Started tapering my am and pm doses Sunday and stopped tapering my middle dose until the other 2 catch up and I can taper all the three at the same rate.  Yesterday I started having stronger symptoms than I have in a long time.  Last night I had trouble falling asleep - felt agitated.  Woke up with tight chest and anxiety. which is still here. Praying it doesn't get worse as I have company coming today. I have not been drinking enough water in fact I've been very bad maybe one to two bottles a day, I didn't know if that could be a part of it. Got so used to the midday taper I didn't realize it switching would cause all this

Hi Moonpie:

I'm not a dr or a mod, but I would think tapering your Ativan could give you anxiety. Your body is used to a certain amount and now you are taking it away. I hope you are doing very small amounts. Maybe do your morning dose until you get to the midday dose, then the pm dose. But like I said, I don't know. I'm not a mod.

I'm sure a mod with experience will answer you soon.

Hope you are doing well other than that.

Take care,

Hate to sound like a Maytag washer and be so wishy washy but so far today symptoms are not as bad. Maybe it was an adjustment period?   Thinking about continuing to try the am and pm taper if this continues to improve.   Still would like to know if I need to go back tapering the midday dose to I go back to the original dose of the am and pm? Started tapering my am and pm doses Sunday and stopped tapering my middle dose until the other 2 catch up and I can taper all the three at the same rate.  Yesterday I started having stronger symptoms than I have in a long time.  Last night I had trouble falling asleep - felt agitated.  Woke up with tight chest and anxiety. which is still here.

Moonpie, it takes at least 4 days for blood levels of medication to get steady at the new reduced dose.  That could well explain the onset of your symptoms.  Can you ride it out for at least 2 more weeks at your current dose?  Symptoms may well ease in that time frame.

Next decrease you may want to think about making a smaller decrease than the current one.  When you report your decrease, would you mention which medication you're decreasing -- buspar, lexapro, or ativan?

Thank you Brass Monkey and Stareyes.  That helps.  I have one more dose of Ativan to taper. I am almost done with tapering my second dose. And I already have the remaining dose half of the original weight. I was very sensitive to Ativan and such a blessing and helping me. I have had to taper it .001 in weight every 4 days. I am tempted to try this with my remaining dose. My math is not great. My Lexapro weighs .169. When I multiplied it by the .975, it came out to .165. And I understand I would hold that for a week before reducing another dose. Is that correct?. Lexapro as I am to the Ativan. After that I have a small dose of Buspar to taper and I Will Be Drug Free. But that is looking a couple of years ahead. I appreciate your help so very much thank you

Hi Moonpie-- yes, your new dose would be .165. Then for your reduction next week start with the .165 and multiply by .975.

Brass

20 years on Paxil starting at 20mg and working up to 40mg. Sept 2011 started 10% every 6 weeks taper (2.5% every week for 4 weeks then hold for 2 additional weeks), currently at 7.9mg. Oct 2011 CTed 15oz vodka a night, to only drinking 2 beers most nights, totally sober Feb 2013.

Since I wrote this I have continued to decrease my dose by 10% every 6 weeks (2.5% every week for 4 weeks and then hold for an additional 2 weeks). I added in an extra 6 week hold when I hit 10mg to let things settle out even more. When I hit 3mgpw it became hard to split the drop into 4 parts so I switched to dropping 1mgpw (pill weight) every week for 3 weeks and then holding for another 3 weeks.  The 3 + 3 schedule turned out to be too harsh so I cut back to dropping 1mgpw every 4 weeks which is working better.

Current dose 0.000mg 04-15-2017

I decided not to try the generic Lexapro and Buspar.  I am so sensitive to most meds and with tapering the last dose of ativan I was was afraid to try.  I have also had a large amount of stress in my life lately.  I couldn't risk adding something else.  My Dr. was so nice.  They called in new scripts at my old pharmacy for me to fill.  I might try the other Lexapro when I go to taper it.  Thank you Shep as always for your support and help.   Moonpie🙂

November 12th I will be off all of my Ativan.  I am down to .006 in weight right now. I have taken the other 2 doses down to .001 because I am too cowardly to jump off at .005. I have done okay this way so I am not going to rock the boat. My question is how long do I wait after going off the Ativan to start my Lexapro tapering. I do not know what I would have done had the Lord not led me to this forum. I was suffering and miserable trying to taper and what I have learned here has changed how I feel and my life during this time. before I had no place to go to find answers or support with people that understood. I found all that here. I still have Lexapro and Buspar to taper off of but with the help I receive here I know I can do it.  Thank you

Please check out this topic before making a decision about changing:  Generic vs Brand

If you do decide to change to generic it is a good idea to do a crossover, eg 3/4 old + 1/4 new, 1/2 and 1/2, and 1/4 old + 1/4 new (or 7/8 + 1/8 etc if you want to go more carefully).  The length of time you stay at each of those combos is up to you.  You could do 3 days on each combo, or a week or more.  You will need to keep daily notes on paper to see how the change in form of drug is affecting you.

Remember to only make one change at a time, so you wouldn't make a dose reduction at the same time as doing the crossover.  Keep it Simple, Slow and Stable

Moonpie, how is your sleep now that you're off the benzo? Have your benzo symptoms resolved?

Please don't start another taper until you have stabilized from the benzo taper and even then, I would give it a few weeks for your nervous system to catch up before heading into the next taper.

EDIT: sorry, moonpie, I misread your post. You are not off the benzo yet. As you come off, please let us know how you're feeling.

This is a beautiful tribute to the micro-taper and to your own ability to cope, Moonpie. I'm so glad to read you are doing so well.

You may want to give yourself a few weeks just to make sure you are doing well and then proceed with the AD taper. It seems like some people who have the hardest post-zero experience are people who came off the drug too fast and / or the people who were on the drug for decades and are learning how to process their emotions after being numbed down for so long. Since you started these drugs 2 years ago and did a careful micro-taper, you may not have these kinds of overpowering emotions and difficulties.

If the holiday season ramps up symptoms, you could schedule the AD taper for the first of the year and give yourself a break from everything over the holiday season. If not, then you may want to continue with your tapering. But I would give it at least a few weeks after you come off just to let the dust settle and to see where you're at.

Are you planning to do a micro-taper off the AD? I would recommend that, just in case you do get some waves from the benzo taper. Hopefully, since you're having a low-symptom benzo withdrawal, the waves will be mild, but because the antidepressant/benzo combination can be tricky, it's best to go cautiously.

Thank you Shep. Not only for all your help but your  continued support. You really answer the question I was going to ask later. I was wondering about micro tapering the Lexapro the weight of the pill is .169 doing .001 every 4 days would take almost 2 years for me to get off of it. And then I still have the Buspar. I was tempted to try the 10% and see how I did. I didn't have any trouble tapering off Xanax or Zoloft 2 years previous to when I started these. I had not been on. I guess I get concerned about the medicine being in my system for as long as it's going to take. Then again I hate to put myself through problems and suffering by trying the 10 or 5% when I should just do the .001. Everything was so up and down before I found this side. And before I started. Thank you for your advice you are always such a help.

You're welcome, Moonpie. But please give yourself tons of credit for being able to re-right the ship, stabilize, and then patiently go through the micro-taper.

Since you're doing so well with the benzo micro-taper, definitely stick to that with the AD taper. That's your best chance for staying as functional as possible throughout the rest of your withdrawal journey.

I wouldn't worry about the fact that this will take another couple of years. You are still reducing your drug burden all the way down and doing so slowly enough, that's it's possible your brain and your nervous system are healing throughout the journey off.
