Stellate Ganglion Block (SGB - needle in the neck) success?

Recommended Posts

Has anyone tried a Stellate Ganglion Block (i.e. needle in neck) to alleviate severe anxiety/panic in protracted WD?  I read a story on Beyond Meds that mentioned relief but for only 2 days, so it doesn’t sound like a viable option.  I know there has been limited success with soldiers experiencing PTSD.  Thoughts?

Good morning 🙂I Have been looking into this to see if it might help me . My worst issues are sleep hypervigilance,  racing heart at sleep onset, things like that. I've been dealing with this for many years . Did you ever look into it any further?

Lexapro 1 1/8 mg and 10 mg Propranolol. I jumped down to 2.5 mg lexapro from 5 mg on oct 2 where I had been for 7 months and went from 2.5 mg to 1 1/8 mg not sure when maybe around nov 2 went back up to 2.5 mg December 30 . May 13 small cut lexapro 2.5 mg down to 2.4 mg 9/4/14 dropped 8.33% to 2.2 mg 10/13/14 dropped to 2mg lexapro. Back up to 2.2 mg 10/15/14. Dropped to 2 mg lexapro 11/26/14. Dropped 10% to 1.8 mg lexapro 1/11/15. 2/23/15 . Cut of 5%.

3/11/15 cut of 5% 5/3/15 cut of 5% 6/3/15 cut of 5% 7/19/15 cut of 5%. Continued small cuts of 5% every six weeks or so untill October 8th 2016 ,last dose . Last dose was 0.8mg. Currently taking 10 mg propranolol in the afternoon. 1400mg fish oil. 250 mg magnesium, 250 mg L-Taurine, 500 mg Tumeric. 40 mg Zocore simvistatin.

Hello Giak  🙂 I've been looking into the stellate ganglion block for hyperarousal and anxiety issues.  I've suffered for many years and thought this might be a help . Alto told me you had the procedure done at one point,  I didn't know if you would mind giving me your opinion on the matter?   Sorry this is off topic , but I wasn't sure how to contact you , I'm not very good with forum things lol. Thanks for your time .

Thank you Giak for your response.  It sounds like a gamble as to whether it would work or not. My issues are primarily hypervigilance, especially sleep related.  I'm sorry it didn't work for you , did you ever end up having a second injection? If not ,do you think it would have helped? It would be rough to have four days of diminished symptoms, only to have the relief snatched away . I'm not sure if I could handle the traveling,  if it were closer then I would be more inclined to try it . Thank you for your time 🙂

The second injection made the rebound worse. The worst part was feeling so good and losing it it was truly like an Awakenings and it happened twice. The second injection was not an improvement on the whole entire phenomena. In a long-run I suppose I would say that in some sense having that time in my body feeling normal gave me something to intuitively shoot for. But in the short run of even several years it looked like a bad mistake

Giak , I know you said in retrospect you believe the block was a  bad idea . Was it only a bad idea because of the let down after a few days of having some normalcy? I am debating on it , I found out today at my health center they offer the gangleon block and would possibly be willing to try it for me, but I'm really on the fence.  I don't want to make my symptoms worse . On the other hand, I'd feel bad if I had a shot of making things better and didn't.  It's a hard decision.  I am really sorry it didn't work for you, I wish it had . Thanks for your help ,I really appreciate it  🙂

Good luck with whatever you decide. I have learned one thing and that is we can only be the ones who know what is right for us and move forward with empowerment. If you enter this decision in a state of committing to learn something you will. That's all I do at this point -- learn by my choices. And at this point that involves an ongoing commitment to surrendering to the unknown.

I like this , you are so very right . That might be one reason I give myself more issues,  I have a very hard time just letting go and rolling with the flow . I to am learning that which won't bend ,will break , but it's hard . I don't have high expectations with the block , but I don't want to make my symptoms worse either. It's a hard call. Thank you  🙂

I stumbled upon SGB the other day and found it fascinating. Since many of my AD WD symptoms are very similar to those of PTSD, I wonder if it would be a feasible treatment for those of us suffering really bad waves of AD WD. I'm copy/pasting a link to the 60 Minutes report on it. A Google search will bring up more info about it.

Anybody know much about this and/or have any thoughts on it?

Did you end up trying it?

med history: 17 years total

Concerta: 2 yrs - cold turkey, brought on first "depression"

Short trials of Zoloft and Effexor: 1-3 years - multiple cold turkey's brought on OCD intrusive thoughts for the first time

Lexapro 15-20 mg (16 yrs)  - tried to quit once, cold turkey, worst WD ever, had to go on to 20mg to stop WD

Welbutrin 150mg (8-ish yrs) NO w/d symptoms from CT

Adderall 5-7.5mg (8-10-ish yrs) quit CT, brought on many WD symptoms, but manageable.

Begin taper March 2018 Currently on 4.4 mg lexapro - down from 20mg

Symptoms depression, horrible intrusive thoughts and urges, new onset PMS/PMDD, constant extreme irritation and anger, visual hallucinations, irrational thinking patterns, panic, nausea, dizzy, intolerance to working out, chemical sensitivities, noise sensitivities, memory issues, heart palps, etc.

My AD WD waves have greatly improved recently, I believe due to introducing a SLOW / SMALL weekly tapering method, but retrospectively thinking about my horrible waves, they are/were almost identical to extreme PTSD symptoms. From the little that I've consumed, pertaining to SGB, I would LOVE to see more research done on it for treating AD WD as well. It may not be a silver bullet and it may not work for everyone, but if it had similar results as it's showing within PTSD patients, I believe it would be well worth researching and implementing. With the severity of several waves I've endured, I'm only here today to wright this by the true grace of God. I would have totally tried SGB if it were available.
