Can the biperiden 4mg extended release broken in half?

It is not a good idea to break the tablets. Even though they have a score line they are not designed to be broken. Breaking them changes then from extended release to instant release which is very dif

How do I taper them biperiden? Do I take 2 pills of biperiden 2mg non extended release?

Hi ChessieCat.Thank you for the reply. No I haven't started Omeprazole. In fact, the only thing I have done is to taper risperidone further. I had pain in my legs but not crazy. I think it is that my brain needs more amounts of risperidone to have the therapeutic effect. If I walk, my pain is worse. I tapered from 1ml to 0,875mg roughly. I use the liquid solution and  I measure with a syringe.

Well maybe it was a bad reaction by osmosis?!?!  These drugs are strong.  Sorry being facetious, not to you, but big pharma.

Just in case you don't understand my joke.  When I used the word osmosis = passive absorption.  Okay, bad joke out of the way.

I'll be serious now.  So at least you know that there is no way that it was the Omeprazole.

And if the only recent change was the dose reduction.  However you have made a larger than 10% reduction.  A 12.5% decrease.  10% reduction from 1mg is 0.9mg.  It's only been 1 week.  You could try an updose to 0.9mg.

  • Are you having difficulties getting smaller doses?
  • What sized syringe are you using?
  • Are you using prescription liquid or making your own?

If making your own you can dilute with more water so you measure out more liquid.

These are the ingredients for Risperdal liquid.  It contains water so it is okay to dilute the prescription liquid.

What Risperdal® Liquid contains
Each millilitre (ml) of liquid contains 1mg of the active ingredient risperidone.
Also contains tartaric acid, benzoic acid, sodium hydroxide and purified
water.

Yes I say roughly 0,875ml because I am in the middle of between 1ml and 0,75ml.I am not good in math but the syringe measures go like this 1ml,0,75ml, 0,5ml,0,25ml and 0 ml. THIS IS WITH THE SYRINGE THAT COMES WITH THE PRESCRIPTION RISPERIDONE 1ML LIQUID.

I suggest that you start diluting your prescription liquid so that you can measure your dose more accurately.  Doing this will also mean that you can make smaller reductions instead of being limited by the marks on the 1mL (?) syringe that comes with the risperidone.

7 hours ago, Manny78 said:

It would be a good idea to buy a graduated cylinder so you can accurately measure the water.  You will need to do everything the same way each time, even the place on the bench or table where you put the cylinder to measure because there can be differences in how level a surface is.  I will have a look and see if I can find an example of what you need.

If you add1mL risperidone liquid to 9mL water you will have 10mL of liquid.  Each 1mL of liquid will = 0.1mg risperidone dose.

At full strength each 1mL risperidone = 1mg dose

1:1     ratio

By diluting 1mL risperidone liquid with 9mL water (total liquid is now 10mL = 1mg risperidone dose)

1:10    ratio

So instead of taking 0.875mL of undiluted risperidone liquid you would multiply that by 10 and take 8.75mL of the diluted 1:10 ratio liquid.

If you decide to updose and start taking 0.9mg dose you would measure 9mL of the diluted liquid.

OR

You could dilute 1mL of risperidone dose with 99mL water (total liquid is now 100mL = 1mg risperidone dose)

1:100   ratio

So instead of taking 0.875mL of undiluted risperidone liquid you would multiply that by 100 and take 87.5mL of the diluted 1:100 ratio liquid.

If you decide to updose and start taking 0.9mg dose you would measure 90mL of the diluted liquid.

If it was me I'd be trying to get clear plastic (I'd be concerned about me breaking a glass one).  Not the milky plastic like these because these would be harder to see the liquid (unless you added food colouring 🤣 )

I am having a rough time tapering risperidone suffering mild akathisia. My question is should I keep tapering if my aka doesn't improve? Too much restlessness, need to be pacing all the time unless I am in bed, inner vibrations, restless legs and back pain, abdominal pain shaky hands and fingers. Walking makes my aka worse. I only have peace when I sleep. I need to taper 0,86ml of risperidone but I feel stuck. I haven't recovered from my last cut 1ml to 0,86ml.

I need to taper 0,86ml of risperidone but I feel stuck. I haven't recovered from my last cut 1ml to 0,86ml.

If I were you, I'd go back to 0.875mg and stablize. Do not keep reducing if you have withdrawal symptoms.

Hi Manny, sorry to hear you're having such issues :( Risperidone was really efficient for me, but also extremely hard to taper off, even after having it taken only for a couple of weeks (2 months in the first case) - I needed to switch it to Abilify and suddenly I started experiencing sleep issues. Fortunately those went away in a couple of days (also supported by Zopiclon, a sleep med when it was really bad). Regarding the akathisia, probably what the admins suggest is the safer approach. Good luck and indeed those times are harder for all of us!

Has anything else changed?

No, I keep taking the same dose every day. The only change I did was using a different syringe. I think the syringes are the same. I don´t think I am taking less dose.

Have you accidentally missed a dose?

No, I haven´t. I take the same dose (0,86 ml of risperidone liquid) at ten o clock at night. Sometimes a little late (30 min late). I am chatting sometimes with my friends until twelve o clock.

Have you had any antibiotics?

No,I haven´t taken any antibiotics lately.

Have you been drinking any alcohol?

I drank one non alcoholic beer but I don´t do every day.

Have you eaten any Chinese food or any other savoury foods contains MSG?

Sometimes I eat junk food (potato chips, cookies)

Have you experienced any stressors recently?

No, I have not.Only thing my mother having sleeping issues and taking lormetazepam to sleep.

How has covid situation affected you?  Financial, working differently, isolated etc.  We've had members since the beginning of this year posting about unexpected/worse waves which could possibly be related to the unusual circumstances caused by covid.

I don´t work because I can´t. I live with my parents but the goverment pays me a pension.I go out to walk to visit friends when I can. In Spain, we had been locked down in our house for a month and a half. That was very difficult for me. My family has a garden where I could go and walk.

Hi Altostrata, I can't stabilize. I have reached tolerance. I always have withdrawal sxs. Maybe I made a big cut,12,5 %. If I can't taper 5 or 10 percent per month something is wrong. It will take me another 10 years of my life tapering. I am used to tapering and the side effects but now I need to be in home because of the inner akathisia.

Hi Nocturna. I have been taking abilify since 2009. I was on different doses like 30 mgs. I don't remember very well.It is on my story the different doses I was. My last dose was abilify 20mg. I managed to taper it to 10mg.Thats the Dose I am right now. It took me 2 years to come off. How did you taper it? I mean the abilify? I experienced aka while tapering abilify 20mg.i couldnt finish my taper. I just stopped at 10mgs because I was so bad. I had inner vibrations like I do now with the risperidone.

First, I should point out that I was on 15 mg for very small amount of time. Most of the time I was on doses between 2 and 5 mg, which my pdoc considers "a baby dose". I can assure you though that it's still absolutely efficient, as it prevented me from getting a psychotic relapse (when I attempted twice to completely stop it, I got relapses).

So I'm currently tapering down the 5 mg and I reached 3 mg just this week. I'm using the liquid solution, reducing by 10% of the initial dose each month. Sometimes I get more unrest, I have vivid dreams and some mild anxiety, then I keep the dose for 1-2 weeks more, until those go away. I can definitely feel the dose going down, and I like the extra energy, but I have to be careful.

Also, I was lucky to not get any physical symptoms besides mild tremors here and there. But I'm trying to be consistent with practicing yoga at home (the famous "pyjama yoga" :D ), swimming and even doing short jogs. That's extremely important I think. Do you do any physical activity besides walks?

Hi Nocturna. Thanks for the reply. No, I don't do other kind of activity besides walking. In the summer I went to the beach and swam a little bit. I am not familiar with yoga. I have not tried it. What do you mean with psychotic relapse? Do you hear voices? I don't want to take psychiatric drugs. In Dr. Breggin's book it speaks about tardive psychosis caused by APs. Never heard voices until they gave me antipsychotics. I had more OCD. ABILIFY 15MG is a high dose. Doctors believe it is so easy to taper these and it is not. Most people get akathisia since the moment they start taking psy drugs. They had to give me biperiden because I was shaking so much. Can you tell me what abilify liquid solution you take? I take risperidona cinfa 1mg/1ml solucion oral EFG,but I find it very hard to stabilize.I used to take 6mg of risperidone but I was able to lower it down to 1,5mg, but the lower I get the more difficult it is for me.

For me personally it was false beliefs, e.g. if someone wants to lie to me or send me to a hospital against my will (those were not motivated by any real experience). I had those before I started taking APs and I had them twice when I attempted to stop the meds.

The Abilify liquid solution is also 1 mg/ml. That makes precise dosing easier than cutting the pills.

6 mg Risperidone is also a high dose, I remember taking 1-2 mg for a couple of days was enough to get me out of the psychosis.

I know it can be very difficult, especially when you've been taking the meds for so long. I'm sure though there's a way out of being continuosly medicated, we have to be persistent.

Re: akathisia - for me it gets better I think with the lower AP doses. Regarding biperiden (just learned that's the same as Akineton), I'd suggest you ask your doctor about the exact dose. At least for me with the lower AP doses I didn't need it at all. But I also had very mild akathisia, and I didn't enjoy its own side effects (like memory impairment).

It is not a good idea to break the tablets. Even though they have a score line they are not designed to be broken. Breaking them changes then from extended release to instant release which is very different for this medication.

20 years on Paxil starting at 20mg and working up to 40mg. Sept 2011 started 10% every 6 weeks taper (2.5% every week for 4 weeks then hold for 2 additional weeks), currently at 7.9mg. Oct 2011 CTed 15oz vodka a night, to only drinking 2 beers most nights, totally sober Feb 2013.

Since I wrote this I have continued to decrease my dose by 10% every 6 weeks (2.5% every week for 4 weeks and then hold for an additional 2 weeks). I added in an extra 6 week hold when I hit 10mg to let things settle out even more. When I hit 3mgpw it became hard to split the drop into 4 parts so I switched to dropping 1mgpw (pill weight) every week for 3 weeks and then holding for another 3 weeks.  The 3 + 3 schedule turned out to be too harsh so I cut back to dropping 1mgpw every 4 weeks which is working better.

Current dose 0.000mg 04-15-2017

Hola buenas noches.

Gracias

Manuel

Hello Goodnight. Someone taking risperidone and akineton retard 4mg. I am reducing risperidone 0.86ml but I have akathisia. Should I increase the akineton retard or continue to reduce risperidone? I feel like I can't keep reducing for tolerance. I have been on the same 0.86ml dose of risperidone for a month and it has not stabilized me.

Thank you

Manuel

The other mods and myself need to talk about this.  This is a totally different medication than we are use to working with, so we need to come up with a new plan.

Manny, you had akathisia in January, before you started tapering the drugs, is that correct? How has the akathisia changed?

I believe we discussed this many times, any of the drugs you're taking can cause akathisia. You are taking too many drugs together, the combination of any 2 or 3 or 4 of your drugs can be causing your symptoms. If the akathisia is already there, we can't tell what drug to taper to reduce it.

Is the akathisia worse in the morning or at night? Is it worse before you take the combination of Abilify, Cymbalta, and biperiden in the morning, or after you take them?

Akathisia es worse during the day. Is it worse before you take the combination of Abilify, Cymbalta, and biperiden in the morning, or after you take them? It is worse after I take them (abilify, cymbalta and biperiden). When I wake up my sxs start going crazy, restless legs, back pain, need to pace, shoulders, arms, neck pain, inner vibrations, ribs pain, abdominal pain and muscle jerks.

Is it worse before you take the combination of risperidone and Klonopin at night, or afterwards? When I take the risperidone and klonopin and I get to sleep I don´t have pain.

Yes I had. How has the akathisia changed? My akathisia gets worse as I keep tapering, but I managed to taper from 1,75mg to what I am right now,0,86ml,but I had to go up and down because I didnt have risperidone liquid solution and I didnt feel well so I updosed.

When you say if the aka is already there, you mean that I won´t be able to keep tapering? I have to keep tapering my risperidone.Maybe 2 percent or 5 percent.

Is the akathisia worse in the morning or at night? Akathisia is worse in the afternoon and whole day if I do exercise like walking. Is it worse before you take the combination of Abilify, Cymbalta, and biperiden in the morning, or after you take them? After I take (abilify, cymbalta and biperiden).
