Hello everyone,

I’d like to start off by saying thank you.

The people of this forum have inspired much hope and understanding in the ways of antidepressant medication. I am grateful.

I’ve been on Zoloft since the spring of 2015. Things had been going wonderfully well. I felt like myself but disconnected/ unplugged just enough to cope far better. Better mood, alertness and mental focus were a nice change of pace.

Around the end of May 2017 I’d been taking BCAAs for working out for around 2 months. One Sunday, after lifting weights and mowing the yard I took a nap and woke up feeling off. I had low blood sugar issues for about a day, I couldn’t handle warm temperatures, couldn’t sleep well, and suffered hot flashes for the next few days.

For a while I though I was sick. I took an lorazepam one evening (3 days later) and an extra zoloft because of horrible anxiety.

I countinued to take my now double dose with my doctor’s permission. The next 6 weeks were h*ll. I had no idea Zoloft could do such things since I had no negative effects when I started.

I could write a novel (as I’m sure we all could) but I’ll try and hit the main points.

About week 6 I stabilized. I hadn’t found this site yet so many mistakes were made.

i only stayed at 100mg for a week or so before I jumped to 75mg (I felt too apathetic about things, needed to lower).

By this point I realized it was the Zoloft causing my problems.

The next few weeks were quite uncomfortable but things went really bad when working out on the 3rd week caused me to crash...hard!!

I switched doctors as I couldn’t seem to get anywhere with my other one. My new P.A diagnosed me with serotonin syndrome (a short 3 day stint of trazadone while doubling my dose no doubt contributed, different doctor)

she dropped me from 75mg to 25mg of Zoloft. I felt so much better and for the next two weeks got to the point of feeling amazing. Then week three came and some light cardio pushed me over the edge and I crashed again. I also noticed I would have horrible low blood sugar issues for a day or two after crashing.

after a week of misery. I bumped my dose to 50mg (I found this site by then). I felt immediate improvement. I began to heal but also began feeing strong sensations of numbness/ pins and needles in my hands and feet, weakness also. I am currently 7 weeks at 50mg.

I’ve been struggling with tight & weak calves / ankles since, sporadic internal tremors and fatigue. Had back spasms for a bit about a week ago but not since.

I’ve begun to sleep better in the past few weeks (7 hours on a good night but not consistently). I typically wake up around 5-6 hours after falling asleep but I don’t NEED medicine to help me fall asleep anymore (a few months of needing it).

I would rather keep this short but I want you all to know my history.

I saw a psychiatrist tonight at the recommendation of my PA (she was surprised when my reinstatement actually helped, she was convinced I hadn’t dropped too low too fast.  She is a wonderful PA and God worked through her, saved my life when I had serotonin syndrome.)

The psychiatrist on the other hand... I have mixed feelings. I flat out refused any other medication. She believes my first incident was serotonin syndrome.

Maybe so?

BCCA actually inhibit triptophan uptake but then again my workout protein powder did have triptophan in it (I have quit taking all workout supplements months ago).

The psychiatrist also thinks I’m suffering from serotonin syndrome now. (Currently weakness in legs, pins and needles in hands and feet, stiff feeling calves and maybe hands, hands and feet more susceptible to being cold)

what do do you all think?

Do I continue to continue to tough it out at 50mg? Is this a sign my body is too sensitized for this dose?

(I was at 25mg for one month before reinstating to 50mg)

I will work on my signature as soon as I figure out how to do it. Thank you for your time. I trust you all more than the medical “professionals”

Also, the psychiatrist tried to have me quit zoloft and offered a few alternative options for mood stabilizers. I respectfully but sternly replied I wasn’t interested.

Welcome, David.

These drugs have wide-ranging effects on the body and nervous system. The BCAAs probably did not cause your symptoms, it was something else. Is it possible you forgot to take a dose of Zoloft, or took it off schedule prior to this event in May.

Trazodone in combination with an SSRI such as Zoloft can cause serotonin syndrome. However, it sounds like the Zoloft dose itself was excessive for you. Trazodone on top of that might have further boosted serotonin. This probably wasn't serotonin syndrome per se, but close enough. I'm sure it was uncomfortable.

At this point, I believe, your nervous system was sensitized by the drug changes, which accounts for the symptoms you've been feeling over the last 7 weeks. Your nervous system needs to settle down.

It sounds like your system is now sensitive to rigorous exercise. I would go easy on the workouts for the time being, then ramp up intensity gradually.

It is possible you can stabilize at 50mg Zoloft for some months, then gradually taper. Please keep daily notes on paper about your symptoms, when you take your drugs, and their dosages. This will help us determine if the 50mg Zoloft is causing problems.

Most doctors, even psychiatrists, know nothing about withdrawal symptoms, little about adverse reactions, and not much about tapering. Unless the psychiatrist seems extraordinarily knowledgeable about any of these, I would not keep him or her on the payroll. Any doctor can write the prescriptions, it doesn't have to be a psychiatrist.

Please let us know how you're doing.

Hi Alto,

Thank you so much for your reply.

I don't believe I forgot to take my Zoloft that day. I have forgotten in the past once or twice but I normally would feel it emotionally 1st, I felt fine the day this all started.

I did exercise very intensely around this time in my life and looking back, wasn't eating enough, especially carbs.

My symptoms during the 6 weeks of adjusting to the 100mg dose were as follows:

anxiety, nausea intolerance to heat, dizziness, hot flashes with sweating, weakness, pounding heart with physical exertion, horrible tremors in the morning (for the first week), fine tremors for a while (hands), insomnia, etc...

Each "crash" was exercise induced and generally followed this pattern: low blood sugar for a few days, weakness and exhaustion, dizziness, anxiety, nausea, especially poor sleep for the next 4-5 days.

I've given up lifting weights for months, as well as the intense cardio I used to do. Anymore I allow my job to provide the physical activity I need and then rest as much as I can. I stretch each night before bed to help keep my muscles loose (helps me wind down for sleep too).

I can and plan to stabilize at 50mg. I talked with my primary care physician and we agreed on 50mg after an interesting conversation.

I told her I wanted to cut the psychiatrist out of the picture as the psych wanted me to stop Zoloft (later compromised to drop the down to 25mg with no taper).

That was after I told her I had no interest in starting mood stabilizing drugs. My PCP told me I kept sabotaging their efforts to help me and reluctantly agreed to continue my 50mg dose. I understand we have differing views on these SSRI issues but I'm the one that will pay for too quick of a reduction.

I'm sleeping better lately. I seem to have a intense need to urinate lately (not often but when I need to go, I need to go!) , had loose stools yesterday morning with nausea and have been struggling with brain fog (feels like ADHD mind) for the last few days.

I don't like it but I think this is just the next step of recovery. It seems like that is the pattern; waves and windows & symptoms also change.

Thank you again for your support.

Seeing your reply already has boosted my outlook for today!
I hope you are doing well. : )

 Good for you.

Reading this is just a delight.

I cant get over how much I am enjoying reading this probably because it is so rare around here to read of a person who has totally un-patiented themselves and is thinking for themselves and not being derailed by bs.

nz11,

thank you for your reply, your encouragement really made my day and will serve as pillar for me when I have my self doubts! : )

It can feel weird at first, standing up against the status quo, and trying to explain it to others can be interesting...

Oh I wish more doctors had personal experience using SSRI meds.

Shoot, if police officers are tased before they can use a taser...lol

How are you? Where are you in your journey?

Thank you RachelSusan,

This site has offered so much hope a reassurance. I can't help but feel grateful.

Thank you for your reassurance. I'm doing far better than I was two months ago. My main symptoms these days are weakness, muscle tightness and occasional numbness in my hands / feet (far better than it was). I'm going to make sure I'm stabilized before starting my taper, for sure.

I'm glad you were able to get the liquid form.

I'm not sure I'll be able to convince my doctor to prescribe me liquid zoloft when the time comes (low/small doses). Is it possible to taper all the way to zero without liquid form or is it far more difficult?

How are you in your taper journey?

Hi David,

In answer to your question, I got down to 12.5 mg of sertraline (Zoloft) by using a pill cutter.  It was too difficult for me to cut the smaller pills so I switched to liquid, although there are others on this site that haven't had any problems with cutting.   If you do decide to switch to liquid be careful though because one form (hard pill vs liquid) can be stronger or weaker than the other.  I wasn't careful and I got a lot of intense symptoms that lasted for a few weeks.  What I mean when I say I wasn't careful is I just went from taking the hard pill one day to what was supposedly the same dosage of the liquid the next day. If you do decide to switch, somewhere on this site are directions on how to transition from pill to liquid. I did a search just now and couldn't find it but perhaps your moderator could send you a link when you are ready.  Also the people on this site can talk you through how to make your own liquid using your existing pills if you would rather make your own.

I have experienced the symptoms you describe and they are rotten. It's great that you are stabilizing.  Hopefully you can give yourself plenty of time once you have stabilized before you start your taper.

I was impressed reading about your interactions with the doctor and refusing more medication. Wow, your saved yourself a lot of pain and suffering with your simple refusal to go along with the plan laid out for you.

Please continue to take good care of yourself, you are doing a wonderful job of it.

Thank you for your reply, Susan.

Today is going ok. I may have overdone it last Thursday when I moved two bags of salt (40lbs each) to my basement for my water softener. Thought I could handle it (don’t know until we try) but I’ve been dealing with extra tiredness, malaise and weakness. Mosty upon physical exertion (takzing it as easy as I can but have to work, which I’m grateful for).

My mood has been a little less stable with this setback. Anxiety is a bit higher and it’s no surprised to feel bummed. Trying to remember that resting IS doing something and that recovery is nonlinear in this realm. I am doing better than I was a few months back, so there is that.

Looking forward to the holidays. I’ll have a week off of work and my girlfriend will be in town (long distance relationship) so I’m looking forward to it.

Setbacks happen, we don’t like them but being able to share them helps. There have been times during this trail I’ve sincerely wanted to have God take me home. However, He has us here for a reason & as He said “I will never leave you, nor forsake you...”

I hope whoever reads this will take heart. We will get through this, it will be worth it, we are worthy. Prayers and good vibes your way. : )

Hi David,

I love your quote "resting IS doing something."  I'll be telling myself that as needed.  I have had many setbacks this year, it seems to be part of recovery.  Two steps forward and one step back.

I hope you are recovered from your setback in time to enjoy your time off and more importantly your time with your girlfriend.  Having a loved one close certainly seems to help with all that hurts us.

  • 3 weeks later...

Hi, checking in.

The holidays went well. Fast but well.

felt good around the fourth day into break.

Back to work and I think the physical exertion is causing some of my symptoms to return. I had a new computer desk (heavy) arrive  to my house last night & as I put it together, I wasn’t feeing to well. Shaking with physical exertion, exhaustion, nausea, weakness...

I’ve been at my 50mg for about 3 months now. I know the CNS takes time to repair but gosh, this is discouraging. Do I stay at the 50mg for another month or or 2 or should I begin a taper to see if my symptoms ease up. I am sleeping well, fortunately.

Hi David,

I'm not a moderator so I don't have tons of experience like they do, I only have my experience to go by.  For me, I won't taper until I am symptom clear for at least 30 days, but that is my experience.  Also do you have any symptoms the first couple of weeks when you taper or does it usually hit you months later?  I've been know to do both.

Just a suggestion, based again on my own experience, you might want to make smaller percentage cuts in the future. I say this because I noticed that as I have gotten to the lower dosage of Zoloft I have had more of a reaction to each cut. Here's a link about 10% tapering which you might find interesting:

Glad you are sleeping well.  Sorry to hear about the nausea, that is the worst.

I hope you feel better quickly.

Rachel

Hi RS, thank you for replying!

i tend to feel symptoms right away and it’s typically the 3rd/ 4th week when things really let loose (normally induced by exercise which I’ve given up for months now).

I was skeptical about the 75 to 25mg drop but my symptoms were so bad I willing to do about anything, so I obeyed Dr’s orders. It did bring relief until my crash a month later.

I’ve had suspicions my workout supplements caused this storm last year but with help from the people here and time, I wonder if the Zoloft became too much for me, despite doing well for 2 years on it. Idk...

I supposed my thought was maybe I am too sensitized now and need to lower my dose but that may make things worse.

...Patience, wowee haven’t we been trained!!

how long did it take you before your weakness went away?

im not dealing with the numbness and tingling much at all anymore, more this crushing exhaustion with physical exertion.

Hi David,

My pattern of symptoms seems to be very much like yours, I tend to feel symptoms the first week and then they clear up, then about 3 weeks later they are bad for another week.  I also have a delayed reactions sometimes where I will be going along  just fine and then a few months later I get a big hit of symptoms that will last 3 months. I can't say when weakness or symptoms went away because it was always different.  However I can say nothing ever went away in less than two weeks and sometimes as long as 4 months.  I have just found for me that tapering less amounts seems to be better for less withdrawal symptoms.  I have also found that if I don't taper when I have symptoms it's better. For me to taper while I have symptoms is building  on an already unsteady foundation and the symptoms when they come seem to stay around a lot longer. I never had much patience with anything in my life and in the past it was a successful approach for me. Well this Zoloft thing really brought me to my knees and I am having to learn patience.  I hate patience, but it seems to be working.

David,

I just wanted to tell you I enjoyed reading your story and couldn't help but notice some of our similarities. Seems we are both on the "waiting to stabilize" train, though I think you are further along down the track than I, due to my recent screw-up. Just wanted to say I admire you for taking matters into you own hands and doing what you need to get better. I was on Zoloft for years before my recent predicament and, like you, had NO CLUE so much suffering could come from simply trying to stop (or increase) the dose of a little pill. Keep on fighting, you are doing great!

2008 - October 28th, 2016: Zoloft 50 - 150 mgs, settled on 50mgs from 2011 - 2016.

Hi all,

How’s your week going?

Mines been a bit discouraging.

Struggling with weakness, internal and sometimes external tremors, avoiding physical exertion. I avoid activating my leg muscles as much as possible (quads/ squating) as that causes hot flash, nausea, fatigue, malaise, etc.. almost instantaneously.

Have heart palpitations now and then (rare not extreme).

One of the biggest things is feeling faint, especially when talking. Weird. I’m not sure what to make of it. Typical I suspect but not pleasant. I’m trying to just accept as I’m not sure there’s anything else to do about it.

Positive thing, I believe God has given me a bit of a break as the last two days at work have been pretty low key and I’ve been able to take it easier on my body.

Pretty much planning on resting this weekend to try and recoup. I think moving / assembling my new desk last Thursday put me back.

Trying to stay positive. My mood has been kinda low this week. Irritable, a bit anxious at times, frustrated, just low. Reading about Aeroman’s recovery has been helpful.

I dont want want to just complain but sometimes it helps to share.

Hey David!

I am back on 40mgs now and holding on for dear life. I honestly don’t feel much better or different than I did at 20. My main thing is pretty much just anxiety that ranges from about a 3-4 to about a 6, and it is all the time. I have also been working out a lot, maybe that is making it worse? The thing is there have been times where working out has made me feel so much better. So I am not sure what to do with that. So I guess in answer, I am right there with you and sorry that you are dealing with this. It will get better, nothing stays the same forever!

2008 - October 28th, 2016: Zoloft 50 - 150 mgs, settled on 50mgs from 2011 - 2016.

Man I miss working out. Knock out a few reps for me 👍🏻 Lol. I hope that anxiety simmers out soon! Thank you for letting me know how your doing.

Today was worse yet for me: tightness in my neck, lightheadedness was really bad this morning, (it actually woke me up a one point last night). Going to have some labs done with my PCP Monday morning. It’s been a while and these symptoms are rough!!

It will get better, nothing stays the same forever!” Amen, brother!

Does anyone have any tips about the lightheadedness/faintness, heart palpitations and tight throat/chest? I’m getting an evaluation to make sure it’s nothing serious but have any of you struggled with this and found a way to cope?

Hi David,

I have experienced the lightheadedness/faintness, and every incantation of head symptoms in between. Wozzy, wobbly, feeling like I was walking on a floor that was moving beneath my feet, a spinning room and so on.  I never did find a way to do anything to make the symptoms go away, they just slowly faded away on their own as I stabilized.  An awful and painful situation for sure,  but you will heal.

Thank you, Dave.

That definitely resonates. It was my doing that has me in this position (short term setbacks and overall) but I guess that’s were we all have to extend ourselves some grace.

Afterall, if anyone of us suffering now knew what we know now before starting medication, I’m sure we would have avoided it.

Zoloft definitely helped with speaking my true thoughts, provided clearer thinking, unplugging enough from the world and yet feel like myself, just a bit detached but man the suffering since!

We are growing stronger and will be far stronger coming out of all of this!!

Hi David182,

I thought I would check in on you. How have the symptoms been since last time you posted?  Did you get your lab work done? How about the internal and external tremors, have they stopped or minimized? Sorry for so many questions, I'm just trying to get a feel of how you are doing. Being a current Zoloft sufferer I can totally relate to what you are going through.

Hi RachelSusan, thank you for checking in, it means a lot.

My blood work was normal. Just finished a 48 hour heart monitor test yesterday. I still deal with the tremors but they seem rather random. Also, tingling has returned to my hands and feet but it’s sporadic and not as bad as it was a few months back.

It’s been two (3?) weeks of the lightheadedness which seems to happen mostly when I’m talking and standing, though it can occur when sitting as well. So I’ve been quieter than normal. I’m thinking I might make for a good monk right now, lol

i have a stress test scheduled for next Wednesday and I see a neurologist for the 1st time early February.

Working on on inner peace and acceptance. If I find myself worrying I bring my attention to my breath and current surroundings. Scripture helps too.

how are you?

Hi David,

I'm glad to hear that your blood work was normal. I'm sure you are glad to be finished with wearing the heart monitor as well.

From the information you are giving it sounds to me as if you are starting to stabilize.  Give it lots of time. I know that I really want to get off this medication so my inclination is to keep pushing it, I have to remind myself that if I don't go slowly the symptoms could come back.  The closest thing we have to an owners manual for our bodies going through withdrawal would be what we get here on this website, however for some of us even those rules don't apply.  For example, I always know when to change the oil on my car.  Wouldn't it be great if somewhere it was written that we could decrease every so months, at a certain percentage with a guarantee?  Like I said, at least we get some guidelines on this site that we can then modify for our needs. Thank goodness for this site.

I am hanging in there.  I have noticed that as I get to the lower dosages the tapers get harder, even with a tapering at a lower percentage and waiting more time in between. I had read about the possibility of this happening here on Surviving Antidepressants so at least I was prepared for it.

Quit Zoloft (Sertraline) June  2016,  reinstated 50mg of Zoloft July 2016.  From July 2016  to October 2016 went from 50 mg down 2.3 mg. I up-dosed in November 2016 to 12.5 mg. Held there until January 2017 when I started a much slower taper.

“Hanging in there.”

I find myself saying that a lot these days : )

Yes, I’m very grateful for this site. Much comfort, guidance and encouragement here that is simply beyond words.

I’m praying for you and sending good vibes your way.

I just thought of something; I know from my experience symptoms of updosing vs decreasing are similar but also different in a few ways. Have you noticed a difference in withdrawl symptoms at different dosages?

For example, a difference in symptoms when going down too quickly from 50mg vs 12.5mg?

David,

Most of my tapers have had similar symptoms, however as I have gotten into the lower doses I noticed the same old symptoms, plus a few new ones. All symptoms, new and old, seem to manifest themselves more quickly and last for longer amount of time. Not necessarily more intense, at least not for me. To me lower doses was around the 6 mg mark.  It can be managed though. I might have to hold longer between tapers and do a lower percentage, but I will get there.

I think one of the most heartbreaking things about this process is that it is not linear.  To have a few good hours or a few good days gets our hopes up, and then back the symptoms come. That's when the heartbreak comes in, to think it was over with and then it is not. However, and this is the good part, if we look at the big picture, we can see improvement.  And even more importantly, as we go through tapers and perhaps even make a mistake or two we learn how to manage our future tapers.

Back to the question about the difference between tapers.  I did cold turkey and nothing in my tapers is anything close to what the cold turkey was like, that was beyond anything I have ever experienced in my life. I am not sure if I answered your questions about the difference in tapers. If I haven't feel free to ask any additional questions.  I am not off the drug yet, and not an expert, I am someone though that has made just about everything mistake there is when it came to tapering, so sadly I have a lot of experience in that area. Not wanting to end this post on a negative note, I will say though that I am learning from my mistakes and I am now learning to manage the taper in a way that it sort or runs in the background of my life rather than me being completely debilitated by it. We will feel better, we will get better. :D

This describes my life perfectly right now. I am trying to turn that around, like when I am hit by a big wave say, “well my good times don’t last forever, so this won’t either.” I am not very successfull at it (hence my ridiculous amount of posts on this site) but that is what I am “trying” to do. I do kind of feel like my good times are getting longer and more frequent, maybe though, so hopefully that means stabilization is slowly but surely happening.

Thank you RachelSusan.

I’m hopeful it won’t become worse as I taper. I’ll certainly try and be patient as I want to feel better ASAP (don’t we all).

Gosh I hear ya, feeling good for a bit, on top of the world and then...bleh.

I’m trying not to be pessimistic but yet it seems to be best to enjoy what we can, while we can without over-doing it but not let or gaurd down. One day at a time. We will get there.
