Rosetta: cold switch May 2011 & too fast taper Feb 2017

Recommended Posts

If anyone would like to give me some words of encouragement they would be appreciated.  I feel pretty bad.

I had a very hard night.  I had a cortisol awakening in the night when my daughter was coughing.  Instead of falling back asleep I began to feel severe anxiety, fear, crying that did not relieve my anxiety, and muscle tension and some dystonia.  I even woke my husband to help me cope.  He really doesn't know what to say at this point.  I think he is starting to lose hope.  He's been very sick with the same horrible cold my daughter has, but he feels much worse as of yesterday.

I woke up in the morning with no cortisol spike, but with the feeling of anxiety.   I took my daughter to the doctor to get her ear checked as she doesn't hear very well with it and says it feels blocked.  There is no infection, but there is fluid that is behind the drum.  The doctor said it will drain away within 3 weeks or so.  Then I went to breakfast.

Breakfast: Artichoke quiche, decaf coffee

I'm going to try to spend some time with my daughter today and get some sun.

Oh Rosetta - I am so sorry to hear you are not feeling well today.  It sounds like you had a really rough night and are likely still recovering from that.  I hope as the day progresses and you get some sun, you will feel better.  You will get through this wave and back into a window!

-1/06 - 3/07 Cymbalta. Fast taper (essentially CT); withdrawal symptoms after 4 mos (didn't realize was WD)

-10/07: 100 mg Zoloft; 1 mg Klonopin - tapered off Klonopin after 4 mos. Several unsuccessful slow tapers of Zoloft; went up and down in dose a lot

-Spring 2013 back on 1 mg Klonopin to counter WD symptoms; switched over 5-6 mos from Zoloft to 35 mg citalopram
-Two attempts at slow tapering citalopram, always increased dose due to WD; also increased Klonopin to 1.25 mg in 2014, then to 1.5 mg in 2015

-8/17-9/17: After holding one year at 20 mg, feeling withdrawal symptoms due to stress - slowly increased to 25 mg. No change in symptoms after 6 months (? tolerance ?)  - decided to start citalopram taper February 2018 (still on Klonopin 1.5 mg).

Supplements: fish oil; magnesium; vitamin D3; curcumin

Citalopram taper:  2/2018 - 12/2019: 25 mg - 11.03 mg I 2020: 10.89 mg - 7.9 mg I 2021: 7.8 mg - 5.26 mg I 2022: 5.2 mg - 3.36 mg I 2023: 3.3 mg - 1.47 mg 2024: 1/5/24: 1.44 mg; 1/19/24: 1.40 mg; 1/26/24: 1.37 mg; 2/2/24: 1.34 mg; 2/9/24: 1.31 mg; 2/23/24: 1.28 mg; 3/1/24: 1.25 mg; 3/8/24: 1.22 mg; 3/15/24: 1.19 mg

Hi Rosetta-- it seems that the constant onslaught you've been through for the past weeks is starting to ware you down. Waves like this can be very tiring and frustrating, but they do eventually run their course and things calm down again. While we are in the thick of it, it seem that there is no end in sight, even when it could be just around the corner.  Dealing with being shocked awake is a tough one, because of, well, the shock value of being pulled from a nice comfortable sleep. The chemical element will still be there, but our reaction to the surprise awakening can make a lot of difference. The shock can trigger a mini-emotional spiral that will keep us from getting back to sleep.  An IMMEDIATE acceptance and relaxation response can go a long way to helping the situation.

When the shock hits and you "bolt upright" don't panic, let the sensation wash over you for a few seconds (2 or 3) and then let them start to fall off.  Now close your eyes, take a -deep breath and let the tension drop from your body as you exhale.  Keep you mind empty at all times and start some 4-7-8 breathing.   Ignore any shock spikes if they show up and keep breathing. Six or seven breaths should do the trick.  Now close your eyes and snuggle back down and let sleep happen.  It might be a "conscience sleep" where you don't feel "out of it" but it will be sleep all the same.  Work on avoiding the Emotional Spiral and things should improve.

20 years on Paxil starting at 20mg and working up to 40mg. Sept 2011 started 10% every 6 weeks taper (2.5% every week for 4 weeks then hold for 2 additional weeks), currently at 7.9mg. Oct 2011 CTed 15oz vodka a night, to only drinking 2 beers most nights, totally sober Feb 2013.

Since I wrote this I have continued to decrease my dose by 10% every 6 weeks (2.5% every week for 4 weeks and then hold for an additional 2 weeks). I added in an extra 6 week hold when I hit 10mg to let things settle out even more. When I hit 3mgpw it became hard to split the drop into 4 parts so I switched to dropping 1mgpw (pill weight) every week for 3 weeks and then holding for another 3 weeks.  The 3 + 3 schedule turned out to be too harsh so I cut back to dropping 1mgpw every 4 weeks which is working better.

Final Dose 0.016mg.     Current dose 0.000mg 04-15-2017

Hi Rosetta

i am so sorry you are suffering with such a bad night.  You are under the added stress of your husband still being unwell and taking care of your daughter.

It will get better just take it day by day, get in the sunshine if you are lucky enough to have it and hopefully it will relax you. Brass monkeys advice is always helpful.

2006 After sudden death of mother put on 20mg of citaloprom for depression.

2014 Drug stopped working after two weeks of panic attacks felt fine.

Aug 2014. Doctor put me on lyrica for rash on face, diarrhoea, sleeplessness, muscle cramp, bruising. Initial dose too strong, halved dose.  Stopped taking it 22/10/14

2014 severe anxiety after several ssri's attempted, seem to have developed severe  sensitivity to any drug, but giving severe  reactions put on cipralex drop form.started on 2 drops and had to increase by 1 drop every 3 days. Eventually got to 12 drops and had to stop as side effects every step of the way dreadful. Psychiatrist kept telling me to stick with it and my body would get used to it.  Eventually down to 8 drops. Bad reactions throughout the time I was on it

Have been on this until may 2017. Stopped over two weeks. Felt fine for 5 weeks after initial dizziness, nightmares, nausea, insomnia.

Given diazepam by gp and told to take them when anxiety bad. Have only taken them very rarely as they frighten me.

Last two weeks severe anxiety returned and feeling hopeless

11July 2017. Cipralex 2mg. Anxiety, nausea still severe

13 July 2017 Cipralex 1mg due to advice of too high dosage  by kind person on thus site. so dropped from 2mg to 1mg and feelings of anxiety still at severe. As well as nausea, headaches, fatigue.

15 July still feeling extremely anxious verging on panic. Nausea, feelings of fainting, fatigue. Lots of head pains

3 August. Three weeks into trying to stabilise on one drop of cipralex. Still have waking from 4am. Sporadic upset stomach. Nausea.  High anxiety.  Throbbing/burning in nether regions seems to have eased for time being but stabbing/burning in calves of legs. Tinnitus. Occasional half to whole better days but mainly still struggling. Fatigue

Brass

Thank you, Brass.  The frustrating thing is I did that, and it did not help.  I am usually able calm myself and fall back asleep.  Every so often it doesn't work.  I don't know exactly why.  I suspect it's a hormone issue with my cycle and being on Day 22.  This happened three days before the end of my last cycle, too, and again two days after that.  I need to find a solution in my diet perhaps.

@Scorpio @direstraits @wantrelief  Thank you all for your kindness.  I am so tired and so very anxious.  Thanks

Thinking of you, Rosetta.

You're encouragement has meant so much to me.

I wish that I had something more to offer you.

I know exactly what this feels like.

I get how frustrating it is, when sometimes the things you try, work.

And other times, they don't.  And you don't know why.

I wish I could offer more insight for you.

But it would be like the blind leading the blind.

I think right now, you know more than I do.

I'm not even sure that mentally right now I can look into that histamine stuff.

I can only hope it helps, even just a little, to know I'm thinking of you.

I wish you strength and patience.

And hope.

Anxiety since I was 5, and my Grandma died.  Depression since at least my early 20s.

Wellbutrin for unknown length of time in 2009  Guess: 6-9 months.  Cold Turkeyed in Dec 2009.

Citalopram 40mg end of 2014 until June 2017. Began within a few months after 4th child was born because I crashed.

Quit CT.  Had no major symptoms until Sept. Took Gaba from spring until near end of Nov 2017

Took St. John's Wort mixed with who knows what else from mid-summer to end of Sept..

Clonazepam 0.25 mg once a day since Sept. 18.  To stay sane.

Rough time since Sept. 18.  Tried to reinstate.  Repeatedly.  Failed.  Bad reaction.  Horrible cortisol spikes

I seem to react badly to anything I take right now.  Except Clonazepam.

End of December, forgot to take Clonazepam for a few days. Thought I could do without.

Appears I was wrong,  Jan. 1-2?   Trying to find the right way to deal with things.

Holding at 1/4 of 0.25mg pill morning and night.  Reinstated Jan. 5

Apr. 30, Got a scale.  Measuring roughly .25 mg of a .80mg pill that contains .25mg Clonazepam.

Hello my dear friend, I wish I had adequate words to comfort you. I am so sorry you are suffering so terribly. It is disheartening when our usual techniques to self sooth are ineffective, however, I'm sure this was a blip due to current added changes and stressors . You have even more on your plate at the moment. Your routine has changed due to Spring break.  At the moment you are not having the respite when your daughter goes to school. This must be very tough and exhausting. Also your family is sick and your sleep is being further disrupted. Is there anyone you could ask for help? Someone who could care for your daughter for a few hours whilst you and your husband rest. I don't think many of us are very good at asking for help...I know I'm not. This will get better Rosetta...it will not stay like this. I know you know this but when we are in the thick of a horrible wave it helps to be reminded sometimes.  Even though we have never "met" I consider you my friend and you have my never ending support and love. It is going to be okay...trying to send you a big hug over the oceans...Much Love as always. K xo

@Waterfall @Kristine

Thank you both.  I did feel better being out in the sun today for hours.  We went to the zoo.  The butterflys were in an atrium.  They landed on us and ate watermelon from our little cup.  It was probably too much for me, but I really do feel better because I'm distracted, and my cog function is better when I'm outside.  It's a trade off, I guess.  We shall see how much I pay for it.  I'm up late, too.  Bedtime slides later and later every day off school.  I don't know.  I simply don't have the energy to hold a strict schedule when school is out.  I try, but morning sleep is so needed after bad nights.  I don't want to face the morning anxiety earlier than necessary, of course. Hard to be disciplined.

@Rosetta: hang in there. I am so sorry to hear how hard it is for you now. It sounds exhausting. I hae been, as you say, ping ponging and I feel despair. But must remember that there are good days/hours and to be happy when they come. Read a sertraline success story today (oh, I have to and often) and this was a good reminder:

The recovery was slow and painful, but I became conscious of every little improvement as it happened. I got used to the pattern: something would get better for a while, then suddenly everything would swing right back and all that recovery would vanish. But I learnt the trick - once something had recovered temporarily, it was only a matter of time before it recovered permanently. It made no difference if it came back for a while... it had already revealed its weakness, and sooner or later it was going to be gone for good. That was true in every single case.

Thank you, @FarmGirlWorks. I'm trying to have compassion for myself and forgive myself for the current state of things.  I'm sick, very sick, and I'm doing the best I can with those things other people take for granted.  I need to heal before I can expect to function normally.

The anxiety is the worst.  It tells me I'm screwing up.  I always had mild, normal anxiety before I took ADs when I had proscrastinated.  Of course, that happened on ADs, too, but the anxiety became much more frequent, turned into anticipatory anxiety, and that made me proscrastinate more.  So, I'm reacting the same way to the faux anxiety I always have: "what have I been ignoring?  What's falling apart?  What's the next emergency?"  And there are a lot of things I haven't been able to take care of lately!!!  Having anyone over to the house is very upsetting, but sometimes it has to happen.

Dinner last sat night very late: two pieces of ham and some egg salad

Slept poorly, many cortisol awakenings

Anxiety in the night

Slight dystonia in the night

Cortisol awakening

I am sorry Rosetta, anxiety is just the worst and I don't know when it will get better. Seems it always comes back for me, even after I feel I make huge strides forward. I wish there was a way to help you through it, but I guess just try to be as positive as you can and look to how much you have improved. That improvement will continue, even if it is so slow your don't even notice.

Hey Rosetta. This something I wrote on my thread a while back, that I thought you may like and possibly identify with ~ Shep did, as well as others. I think it remains fairly true.

"I don't believe that we emerge from this process unscathed however we can often come out stronger in the end even if it's perhaps slightly different than before. I think we undergo a metamorphosis of sorts so that even though there is some change, ultimately it is often for the better in the long term. I think the skills and knowledge we tend to acquire during this experience can set us up to lead a healthier and more aware life in the future.

Obviously if we could avoid this pain we would but in terms of seeing some positive benefits from it , at least there are some in my view. I think we become much better than our pre- med self. Compassion and understanding seem to grow exponentially , not to mention other positive qualities that seem to come to the fore.

I like to see the positive in this. It helps me to get through it."

Ali

hi Rosetta, so sorry that you've hit this bump in the road, it will smooth out, though

I was just curious if you're taking any magnesium? my apologies if that's mentioned elsewhere in your thread.

and/or have you tried an epsom salts bath or even a foot soak?

have you tried "legs up the wall"?

just tossing these out there as suggestions, again my apologies if you've tried them already.

hope you have a good day today!

@Happy2Heal Hi.  I stopped taking the magnesium.  I don't know why.  I was having trouble with the dose.  I'm still waiting for the hormones to run the course.  Still in PMS.  I think I should start the magnesium again.  Thanks for pointing that out.

I hope it helps!
I know I had cut my dose of magnesium in half at one point, trying to save money.
I didn't notice an immediate problem but over time my anxiety did seem to ramp up, so I went back on the full dose and have had virtually NO anxiety during the day, and only a wee bit some early mornings if I wake up and it's super quiet, or I had a dream that leaves me disoriented, something like that.

I used the "legs up the wall" a LOT when I was in acute WD. It really helped.

Hey Rosetta.

Thank you, Ali.  I'm in tears.  I hope that is true.  There has to be a silver lining to this horrible cloud.

This year is the 20th anniversary of my grandmother's death.  She raised me until I was 8.

I know how you feel. I'm an only child. Both of my parents have passed. My mom's birthday is Wednesday so this year is kinda bad for me too. Maybe we can get through it together. I miss my grandma so much. She's been gone 22 years.

I just haven't been on much because I'm having such a hard time right now and a bad attitude. I don't want everyone to have to listen to me.

PREVIOUS medications and discontinuations: Have been on medications since 1996.

Valium, Gabapentin, Lamictal, Prilosec and Zantac from 2000 to 2015 with a fast taper by a psychiatrist.

Liquid Lexapro Nov, 2016 to 31-March, 2019 Lexapro free!!! (total Lexapro taper was 4 years-started with pill form)

---CURRENT MEDICATIONS:Supplements:Milk Thistle, Metamucil, Magnesium Citrate, Vitamin D3, Levothyroxine 25mcg, Vitamin C, Krill oil.

Xanax 1mg 3x day June, 2000 to 19-September, 2020 Went from .150 grams (average weight of 1 Xanax) 3x day to .003 grams 3x day. April 1, 2021 went back on 1mg a day. Started tapering May 19, 2023. July 28, 2023-approximately .87mg. Dr. fast tapered me at the end and realized he messed up. Prescribe it again and I am doing "slower than a turtle" taper.

19-September, 2020 Xanax free!!! (total Xanax taper was 15-1/2 months-1-June, 2019-19-September, 2020)

I am not a medical professional.

The suggestions I make are based on personal experience.

Big hugs, Rosetta: that's huge.

And as I am approaching PMS, am sipping magnesium powder in water. It helps. I haven't taken the pills; the powdered form seems to help. PMS is a cruel mistress/master.

I think what Ali wrote is, indeed very true.  as awful as WD was, it's actually turned my life around so much in a positive way, that, while I'll never actually be "glad" to have gone thru it, there very much has been a silver lining for me.
Acute WD pushed me to do things that were way outside my comfort zone, pushed me to get out and do things that I might never have done otherwise. And now, the life I have today is SO much better than the past two decades of living in a drugged out, numbed out, fog.
I have friends, I have a social life, I have fun, I feel in charge of my life, and I can feel things again. It's nothing short of amazing to me, somedays, that I could feel this good, after a solid year of pure HeLL and another few years of semi hell before that, as I made a couple of false starts to tapering (and never did really taper correctly)

I have grown and changed so much in the past couple of years. Growth and change is never easy but it was so worth it.

I am so glad you ended up being able to enjoy the day, Rosetta - such wonderful news! :)

Today is bad, but it's not all WD.  It's Day 1 of the cycle.  I woke up feeling more or less ok after a hard night of severe muscle tension in the area where I have dystonia.  I slept better last night, and had much less insomnia.  This morning I had less anxiety until I had an argument with my husband, and then I had severe anxiety with SI.  I feel so helpless.. I have a terrible headache on the right side.  At least the anxiety is better today.

Dinner last night: beef stew

Better sleep

Increased dystonia

No cortisol awakening

Less anxiety upon awakening

Extreme irritability

Late Breakfast: Egg, toast with butter, orange, no coffee

Extreme anxiety with SI after breakfast -- overwhelmed, over-stimulated

Lunch: Hot dog, water

Severe headache appeared at 3:45 pm

Stayed home all day.  Daughter had a friend over to play until 4:00 pm.  They painted her room with glitter glue, and it's everywhere, the carpet, her clothes, the walls.  I'm trying to not care.

I am so sorry, Rosetta.  I can relate to a lot of what you are experiencing.  I hope you feel better soon.  Thinking about you - WR.

Hey Rosetta,  You're  a tough cookie my friend. Im so sorry you had an argument with your husband.  This makes things so much harder. My husband and I have the odd argument. It usually stems from me feeling overwhelmed and upset...him feeling helpless....and then him trying to "fix" the situation....I get frustrated because it can't be "fixed" and all I really want is a hug and for him to tell me it's all going to be okay.  Of course by that stage he doesn't want to be anywhere near me because I'm as prickly as a porcupine. Who wants to hug an angry prickly porcupine?

Im hoping that now your cycle has begun you will notice a improvement in your symptoms.  So I'm sending you a huge gentle hug (I'm not prickly at the moment ;)) and it's "all going to be okay Rosetta" Much Love, Kristine xo

That is precisely what I needed but he was too angry because I had been so irritable earlier.  He says he knows the real me is inside, but it rarely shows through.  Then it does, and he has hopes, and then the hopes are dashed again and again.

I wish I could turn off my reproductive system.  I always had PMS, but it was very rarely this bad before WD.  It was always worse in the Spring.  I hope it will calm down soon.  I'm so worn out.

You described "battle fatigue" earlier.  This is such an accurate description.  It is no wonder you are worn out from this and PMS.  I'm hoping you have been able to make up with your hubby.  This is not easy for our support person either.

This is one of my issues as well. However, my cycle is purposefully "stopped" by the pill...to hinder the progression of endometriosis. So my hormones still fluctuated but I'm unable to track my cycle. It would be nice to have an off button. I read on WR thread that your daughter is back at school tomorrow.  Please rest my friend....and then rest some more.  You really are going to be okay...I just know it  I hope you have a peaceful sleep tonight, Much Love K xo

@Kristine  Thank you for writing to me.  I'm going to rest.  I hope you can, too.

My husband is still very sick -- sore throat, coughing, stuffy head.  My throat has been uncomfortable the last few days, but rarely painful.  The last two or three nights I could not breathe through my nose at night.  Today, my head is pretty clear, and my throat is uncomfortable, but not painful.

The fluid in my daughter's ear seems to have cleared.  She told me last night that she thought it was gone, but she wasn't sure.

Hi Rosetta - I wanted to check-in and see how you are doing today.  I hope you were able to get some rest and that it was helpful in lowering your symptoms.  Also hope the headache is better.  Thinking about you - WR.
