Cheering on you rosseta! Beautiful work!

You are on the way to get more of your functionality back!

I found many times I worry much about going for a meeting or worse giving a presentation as I felt absolutely impossible with a totally blurred brain etc. But each time it turned out ok. It's almost like a joke how it worked out. It seems when we are firced our mind fully into something, it picks up it's function rather well although just for that little while. You will be fine so don't think much about it now.

So, last night I was irritable.  I had many cortisol spikes this morning, but I went to volunteer in the classroom anyway.  My brain wasn't working well.  I was confused; I had trouble concentrating.  I was anxious, and I started to pace a bit I realized when the kids didn't need much attention.  I felt awful on the walk home.  I cried.  Yet, all in all its ok.  I don't feel terrible now.  It's been about an hour and a half since I arrived at home.  I have been sitting in the sunlight under the trees.  I had no time for a real breakfast this morning.  Now, I've eaten, had magnesium and had sunlight.  Maybe my body is processing everything better these days.

Thank you, @bubble @Rabe @LexAnger @wantrelief @Hazel for all your encouragement and kindness!  @bubbles

I wrote something similar on another members thread:

I think I have come through to a phase that is not quite as up and down.  Either that or I'm more used to the up and down such that it doesn't scare me as much.  (The up and down part is so very scary.  I describe it as ping ponging as in the game ping pong.  Combined with the neuro-emotion anxiety it creates a fear that is hard to ignore.)

I think I feel better as if a new phase has started.  I no longer want to die even when I start to feel anxiety or have a cortisol spike.  It's not perfect.  I don't feel good all the time.  I was in tears earlier today, but I no longer want to die.  That feeling of wanting to die slowly went away.  It's changing somehow.  It's changed to a feeling of frustration that I have to keep having severe anxiety to get to the other side rather than a feeling of "I must stop this feeling immediately even if that means death."  It is much, much less scary in this phase.  I can interrupt the anxiety now.  Sometimes it takes longer to interrupt it, and I worry that I can't, but then it's down to a tolerable level again. I find it hard to describe, but I think it's that the neurotransmitters are different now.  My brain is finding a balance or a better mix of neurotransmitters, I suppose.

A few months ago it did not seem to me that could get to this point, but sometimes when I look back I can't believe how much strength I have had that I never would have thought was possible!

@Rosetta, that is great news. Being on a similar timeline/same drug, I feel the same way. The SI (suicidal ideation) occurs less frequently and is more of a feeling of depression or anxiety but not the crawling-out-of-the-skin variety. The yo-yo'ing (or ping-pong'ing) is still there but reduced a little. Slow, slow, slow but it's moving for us.

Great Rosetta, I am hoping I am coming into the same phase as you. Today, and a little yesterday, were the 1st time in a week anxiety got to "unmanageable" levels. So I have to take that as a big positive and move forward doing the best I can today in a day that has been kind of crap. I agree with the no longer wanting to die feeling, at times I am scared by how little the thought of death scares me, but I no longer feel like I "want" to die if that makes sense.

Im so grateful that YOU see your strength, Rosetta, because it has been very inspiring!!!!  You are truly amazing...and I am SO happy for you and your daughter that you were able to do all these things!!  And doing them HAS to give you more hope and confidence and also quell the fear a little bit even?  I don't know...but you sound so grounded and I am ecstatic for you!!!  Hoping I will get there as well.  Today has been a difficult day but ok none the less.  Sometimes I just don't know how to navigate all these meds that don't like each other at all in this body of mine...becomes really overwhelming sometimes and I do get that feeling of not wanting to do it all anymore...3 years is already too long...but am so grateful for the help and support here.  Don't know where I would be without it.  Hugs and high fives for you!!!!

DaveB, thanks.  I decided to go to the gymnastics lesson and dinner even though I was sobbing earlier.  It wasn't a problem.  I don't know what to think.  Everyone seems to believe that doing less is a key to avoid agitating our systems, but perhaps I have so little to do that I worry too much.  My husband insists that the days I stay home are the days I feel worse in the evening.  The anticipation anxiety of going anywhere unusual is great, but being alone and with my thoughts is almost worse sometimes.

Rabe, yes there's some confidence building going on.  It's all wiped away during a deep wave, but I do see the progress when I'm not under water.  I'm sorry your meds are interacting so much.  It's really a mess what the doctors have done to all of us!

Wow! I'm a retired teacher and I might have been unhappy by the end of a long day like that! Congratulations for making it through such a day!

@Dalalea Ha, ha, yeah, being a teacher was never in the cards for me.

Today is not good.  I woke up quite anxious, and it's not going away.  I was so anxious trying to get ready to take my daughter to school today that I made her anxious.  It was not a happy time.  I feel so bad for her when that happens.  I have to hope that the end result is that I will teach her how to combat anxiety by example!

My husband is out of town all day.  I think that is why I woke up anxious, but I'm not sure if that's the reason.  Maybe it's just a wave.  I've been alone since 11:00 am.  It's chilly here.  I should have gone for a walk, but I was too cold.  I'm going to pick up my daughter and take her to an aquarium, I hope.  That might be a good distraction.

Being at home is, sadly, not comfortable for me at all.  Oh, I hope that will change soon!  I miss feeling safe and relaxed in my own home so much.  The only rest I get is sleep.  I had my first cortisol spike/hot flash at 12:30 am and then 2-3 more after that.  Even sleep was not restful for me except the first 3-4 hours.  I was awake at about 5:00 am and didn't go back to sleep.  I became sleepy this morning a little before noon and fell asleep for about 5 minutes only to wake with a cortisol spike.

Sigh . . . Onward.

Hello Rosetta.

I was wondering what happens when you wake with a cortisol spike.

There have been times i fall asleep for maybe like 5-10 mins and wake up while body shaking.  I thought it was internal only but last night I put my hand my thigh and I felt it shaking.  It happens them it doesn't, etc.  But when it does happens it seems to happen a short while after falling asleep.

Hope the evening is better.

In June 2014 I was taking Celexa for 2 days, 25 mg zoloft 8 weeks, 10 mg Paxil 3 months and 10 mg Lexapro 1 month tapered off in 2 wks.. Was on a total of 6 months had side effects to them all. Went off and had my first panic attack a month later in January 2015. In March 2015 was having stomach issues and was put on Xanax for a week Dr. Said it was anxiety. End of that week woke up heart racing so was put back on Lexapro 5 MG and the next night is when my sleep got messed up. Literally not sleeping

Was it the Xanax or lexapro?? Went off sleep on and off and taking Xanax on and off. The end of April 2015 tried Buspar for 2 days and had side effects and could not sleep at all. Middle of May 2015 went on Ambien and lexapro again. Inner vibration started. Switched to paxil. Went off Ambien in June 2015 and off Paxil July 2015. October 2015 got worse went of zoloft 12.5 mg through December 2015. I was tolerating what I was going through January and February 2016. Then March got worse with horrible panic. Tried hypnotherapy in May 2016 a couple times couldn't Relax when she started counting backwards it freaked me out. Started not sleeping again in May. Went back on Xanax for 2 months May-July 2016. Tried liquid Prozac 5 mg then 10 mg side effects July - August then switched Zoloft 12.5 mg August - September 2016. Been off antidepressants since September 5, 2016. Been off Xanax since July 28, 2016, but I have taken it 8 other times since then through May 2017. Have symptoms going on with agoraphobia. Is this withdrawal??

May 2017 feeling horrible and more intense symptoms.

Hi Rosetta,  I had those few nicer days and last two have been anxious, depressed, tired, ears ringing so bad, joints sore and stiff,

icky!!!  I cried when I read, " I miss feeling safe and relaxed in my own home so much.  The only rest I get is sleep."   I SO miss my  sold home my friends, church, dog that I gave away amidst my manic mind after all the meds etc.  Am so so anxious and down today.  Praying to get to my daughters tomorrow for her daughters birthday/mothers day celebration...not sure I can handle all the stress of her husbands very large family and her dad and his wife...just very sad.

I hope you feel better Rosetta and I hope you will think back on all you did this week and be kind to yourself.  Take care!

Hey Rosetta,

I just wanted to stop by and remind you what a inspiration you are to some of us.

I was off reading someone else's thread, who's thread it was it unimportant, but

I read yet another great thread that you had written, and I just wanted you to know

what a difference it makes, the things that you write.  Thank you.

Considering how many symptoms you struggle with,

the anxiety and other emotional struggles,

you are so strong.

Your certainty that we will recover is a serious inspiration that motivates and encourages us all.

Thank you.  Thank you so much.

Anxiety since I was 5, and my Grandma died.  Depression since at least my early 20s.

Wellbutrin for unknown length of time in 2009  Guess: 6-9 months.  Cold Turkeyed in Dec 2009.

Citalopram 40mg end of 2014 until June 2017. Began within a few months after 4th child was born because I crashed.

Quit CT.  Had no major symptoms until Sept. Took Gaba from spring until near end of Nov 2017

Took St. John's Wort mixed with who knows what else from mid-summer to end of Sept..

Clonazepam 0.25 mg once a day since Sept. 18.  To stay sane.

Rough time since Sept. 18.  Tried to reinstate.  Repeatedly.  Failed.  Bad reaction.  Horrible cortisol spikes

I seem to react badly to anything I take right now.  Except Clonazepam.

End of December, forgot to take Clonazepam for a few days. Thought I could do without.

Appears I was wrong,  Jan. 1-2?   Trying to find the right way to deal with things.

Holding at 1/4 of 0.25mg pill morning and night.  Reinstated Jan. 5

Apr. 30, Got a scale.  Measuring roughly .25 mg of a .80mg pill that contains .25mg Clonazepam.

Hi.  Today was not good.  Anxiety in the morning just as bad as yesterday morning.  Then, anxiety in the afternoon because I forgot to eat lunch.  Now, tension in my neck and jaw and RLS.  It's bedtime.

Still no Mother Nature.   Day what?  Day 40, I think?

(Thanks for stopping by, everyone.  I don't feel like writing much here.)

Aw, I am so sorry, Rosetta.  Thank you for stopping by my thread earlier even when you weren't feeling well....I really appreciated your thoughts.  I really hope tomorrow is a better day for you.

-1/06 - 3/07 Cymbalta. Fast taper (essentially CT); withdrawal symptoms after 4 mos (didn't realize was WD)

-10/07: 100 mg Zoloft; 1 mg Klonopin - tapered off Klonopin after 4 mos. Several unsuccessful slow tapers of Zoloft; went up and down in dose a lot

-Spring 2013 back on 1 mg Klonopin to counter WD symptoms; switched over 5-6 mos from Zoloft to 35 mg citalopram
-Two attempts at slow tapering citalopram, always increased dose due to WD; also increased Klonopin to 1.25 mg in 2014, then to 1.5 mg in 2015

-8/17-9/17: After holding one year at 20 mg, feeling withdrawal symptoms due to stress - slowly increased to 25 mg. No change in symptoms after 6 months (? tolerance ?)  - decided to start citalopram taper February 2018 (still on Klonopin 1.5 mg).

Supplements: fish oil; magnesium; vitamin D3; curcumin

Citalopram taper:  2/2018 - 12/2019: 25 mg - 11.03 mg I 2020: 10.89 mg - 7.9 mg I 2021: 7.8 mg - 5.26 mg I 2022: 5.2 mg - 3.36 mg I 2023: 3.3 mg - 1.47 mg 2024: 1/5/24: 1.44 mg; 1/19/24: 1.40 mg; 1/26/24: 1.37 mg; 2/2/24: 1.34 mg; 2/9/24: 1.31 mg; 2/23/24: 1.28 mg; 3/1/24: 1.25 mg; 3/8/24: 1.22 mg; 3/15/24: 1.19 mg

I noticed just recently that the inside of my ears don't itch all the time.  They used to itch constantly.  Now, when the left one itches a bit I remember that one little improvement.

Day 41.  Anxious.  Can't read without feeling tension in the jaw and temples.

Sleep has been a bit better the last couple of nights.  I heated the shoulder wrap only once last night.

I need some advice.

Is the magnesium supposed to help with cortisol spikes?

I had 4 cortisol spikes this morning between about midnight and 6:00.  This is Hell.  I'm so frustrated that this issue has come back so intensely.  Right now I am very, very anxious.  The nights are very difficult to endure.  I sometimes wake up wishing I could die.    This is happening night after night after night.  This past night was the probably the 5th night in a row.  I dread going to bed because of this.

That is totally what is happening with me this week! I do take powdered mag before bed (the Calm brand) and sip on it throughout the day. But sleep is rough. I take a tincture of valerian/passionflower at night and can knock off for a few hours. Wake up around 3 and have intermittent sleep until 7ish. Then headache all day from, I guess, lack of sleep.

Listened to Claire Weekes yesterday and really really trying to not activate the "second" fear of the symptom in a sensitized CNS, in this case insomnia. It's hard but helpful when I can do it. I feel you, @Rosetta.

Oh, Rosetta.  I hope this gets better for you soon.

You share so many of my symptoms.  Even the ear itching!

I wish I could take them away for you.

It will get better.  It will.

Keep on, keeping on.

Look for reasons to smile.

I know how hard it is.

I wish I could do more for you.

Right now, I can commiserate.

I'm wondering if magnesium is expected to help with cortisol spikes or whether it is only for anxiety?

Journal:

Survived the day with only some disappointments, no disasters.  Picked up the kid from school; went to gymnastics (close-by), to a warehouse store and for a burger.  I started to feel ok at about 6:00.  Now to bed at 8:30.  Having eaten protein recently Im hoping there will be only mild cortisol spikes (I'm hoping blood sugar is a contributing factor.).

Does anyone have any ideas about the mechanism for cortisol spikes and how to make them less intense?

Thanks everyone for your well wishes.  I need them, and I'm grateful.

I've read that stress sets the body on even higher alert and the cortisol spikes earlier, and higher, to get an early start on a loooong day of 'work', curb sugar/carbs before bed cause that increases the cortisol spikes. I know fish oil is recommended for cortisol but Magnesium seems would help as well because if it helps anxiety and sleep then that would in turn help your cortisol. I think lots of organs are involved (thyroid, parathyroid, adrenals, etc etc) and it is hard to get the system balanced again once its off, as we all know.  I've had trouble with an overactive system and panic attacks forever...and any form of stress made/makes it worse until things reset....but this has been my longest most challenging 'marathon' by far!!!!  Wish was not so!!!!!!  Sleep well Rosetta!!!!

I woke with less anxiety this morning.  I had a mild cortisol spike very early this morning, and I woke up and worried for a long while.  I heated my shoulder wrap 3 times, and I took magnesium in the night.

Last night, I had a big dinner - a burger at about 7 pm.  I wonder if I can eat protein late and stave off the cortisol spikes.  I might be having a low blood sugar issue early in the morning.  Does that seem logical to anyone?

YES YES YES!!!  Part of Cortisol duty is to help stabilize blood sugar...so not eating sugar before bed would definitely help. But not eating will also cause it to rise.

When I eat ice cream at night I don't sleep as well...feel better for while but wake up a lot.

And not only does it stabilize blood sugar but because our systems are on such high alert it tends to over react and sugars can bounce around.  I have had blood sugar issues for quite some time and that's the theory.

Glad to hear last night was better Rosetta...gosh THAT is a real blessing!  Yay!  Think about you so much!!

Rosetta, I do better with more protein and fat in my diet. I've long since given up cereal in favor of eggs for breakfast and I do much better that way. My evening meals are also heavier on the protein side.

Glad to hear you had a better morning.

2005 St John's Wort / 2006-2012 Lexapro 20mg, 2 failed attempts to stop, tapered over 4.5 months in early 2012

January 2013 started Sertraline, over time worked up to 100mg

July 2014 Sertraline dropped from 100mg to 75mg, held for six months, slower tapering until 2019 22 Dec 3.2mg

2020 Sertraline 19 Jan 3.1mg, 26 Jan 3.0mg; 1 Mar 2.9, 7 Mar 2.8, May (some drops here) 24 May 2.5, May 29 2.4, June 21 2.3, June 28 2.2mg,  July 4 2.1mg, July 24 (or maybe a bit before) 2mg, early Nov switched to home made suspension; 29 Nov 1.8mg; approx 25 Dec 1.6mg)

2021 Some time in about Jan/Feb realised probably on more like 1.8mg and poss mixing error in making suspension; doses after 10 Feb accurate; 10 Feb 1.6mg; 7 Mar 1.4, continued monthly

10% drops until 1mg, then dropped 0.1mg monthly.
