samanthaelizabeth: How do you manage to keep working while taper off

You are overthinking and catastrophizing, which is typical in withdrawal.  You are thinking about things that very unlikely to happen. (Do you really think they will stop making a drug they make so much money on?)

Do not change SSRI's. Stay on Zoloft.  Staying on the same drug at the same dosage is the safest path to stability.  Tell your doctor you want you are doing fine on 200mg Zoloft, that you want to continue at that dosage, and that you don't want to switch to Lexapro.

I can't tell you how long it will take for you to stabilize.  But I can tell you that you increase your chances of stabilizing more quickly by remaining as calm as you can and not thinking about worst-case-scenarios.

When you see your doctor remain calm.

Okay - Thank you!

I'll never get off this stuff without living the rest of my life in hell.  I still have 20+ years or more and don't want to spend it miserable.  This situation with AD's will never go away until we are all dead and gone and they stop prescribing this crap.  Unfortunately we got stuck in this crossfire!  I guess i'll just stabilize and move on with my life.  I hate all Psych docs- they think they are actual "doctors" they don't know **** about what they are prescribing at all!

You are in an anxiety spiral right now.  I don't know how to help you, but I wish I could.  I think that a calming technique -- breathing maybe? -- is what you need.  Can you play a guided meditation on your phone.

No, if you ask me, you should not stay on Zoloft for 20 years.  Your CNS is destabilized right now, and your altering system has you in a state of high anxiety.  The reason for staying with a particular dose of Zoloft and not adding anything else is to give your body continuity.  You can't stabilize unless you have continuity for a while.  After you stabilize you can make long term decisions, not now.

Think of of it this way: you do not gave to decide right now how long after you stabilize you will take Zoloft.  Just take it one day at a time, keep a steady dose and stabilize.  That's all you have to do besides calming techniques.

I have to deal with the news of my MS progressing, trying to find a job.  I haven't really been working steady since the Wellbutrin debacle.  I am letting my husband down, big time.  Now I have to introduce another drug daily shots for my MS ( Copaxone)  i've taken it before but it scares me. but MS doc says I need to stop this before it spreads to my spine.

Please tell me I did the right thing by going back up to 200mg?  I still don't feel happy just kinda flat.  No appetite until I take Remeron.  I see my Pdoc next week on Wednesday, I'm afraid to tell him how I'm feeling as he will probably want me to taper down and then switch to a different SSRI.  I have to get back to work and I cannot work like this............

I understand exactly how frustrated you are.  There is no instantaneous relief from symptoms.  They very slowly recede, and they might come back stronger during a wave and then recede again.  It is maddening!  When you are suffering from neuro-anxiety it is even harder to endure.  It's very scary.

Your mind is telling you that everything is more serious than it is.  It's all serious enough as it is, but the neuro- anxiety that is telling you there is an emergency is very hard to handle.  I drove my husband crazy asking him if I was safe over and over.

It is hard to imagine, but one day you will understand just how fake neuro-emotions actually are.  This is not said often enough -- the sheer panic you feel about everything right now will go away.  You will continue to be concerned, frustrated and very annoyed by your symptoms, but without the debilitating neuro-anxiety you will be able to manage.

Give yourself a break right now.  You can't work.  It's as if you have had a stroke.  You need to heal at least enough to get past the neuro-emotions that go on all day long.  Then, you can think about whether you are pulling your weight.  If your healing occurs as mine did it will go like this: The intense anxiety will start to go away at night.  Then, earlier in the evenings you'll get relief.  Then late afternoon; then early afternoon -- you get the picture.  In the morning you will feel that the world is falling on you, and you'll realize at night that that was never true.  Slowly but surely your whole day will become manageable.  Until then let the work issue go.

I hope your husband will reassure you that you and he will manage the financial issue until you get the ability to work again.  This is what "in sickness and in health" is all about.  It's just that a doctor injured you, not a car accident.

Thank you Roseta for your response.  I have been on Zoloft max dose for almost 20 years.  Where am I to go from here?  Risk switch to another SSRI and potentially making things worse?  I will probably take me 7 years to get off this drug and no guarantees how I will come out of it. I don't even know if I would qualify for SSDI to help contribute to the household?  What lawyer would represent me? The SSDI people would just say "try a different drug" so you can work.  I am trapped.  I haven't yet stablized on my regular dose of 200MG and don't know if I ever will.  I just feel like crying right now- what these doctors have done to me keeping me on this all this time.  I didn't know..I never would have gone on Zoloft if it weren't for a doctor prescribing Ativan to me for pressure headaches.  I became addicted within weeks and flushed them all down the toilet not know what I was going to go through for months of hell!  I have to see my Pdoc next week and don't know what to say, I'm about ready to start taking Abilfy for a short time so I can get back to work.  I could just cry right now.

I understand completely.  I feel the same way.  The degree of betrayal is staggering.  I wish I had never tried these drugs either, but I am certain that they harmed me.  I would be very concerned about switching.  That seems to be very dangerous.

The idea at SA is that once you stabilize at a dose you start tapering and will eventually feel well enough to work - hopefully.  As the dose gets lower you feel better.  No one says you have to come off the drug completely if that's too hard to do and keep a job.  But the wisdom seems to be the lower you can go the better off you will be.

You had pressure headaches -- I had tension headaches -- are they the same thing?

i have to go to bed now.  Take care - Rosetta

I agree with Rosetta samantha. You have been harmed by your doctors and thats a hard thing to come to terms with. You are going through a process of grieving which is normal when you are in a situation like this. You are grieving for the life you could have lived in that time. I think that this is a normal, healthy part of the process. Like I said in my response to your post on my thread, I would also be very concerned about switching. Unless you are dangerously suicidal I would suggest caution and patience. You need to give your brain time to catch up to all of the changes it has been through. This takes a long time.

You will feel better eventually. Just because it may take you years to taper off of your med, doesn't mean that you will be miserable through that whole process. I think that if you are patient, and are smart about the process, you will eliminate a lot of potential pain. Just try breathing for right now. Take deep breaths and just focus on the moment. Don't think about the future, don't think about the past. Just focus on right now. You WILL feel better eventually. I promise you that.

Watch this video later after you have practiced breathing exercises. Its the story of a woman who has gone through absolute hell from psych meds. She tried to kill herself at one point, but is now thriving and doing very well. She was in a much worse position than many of us and she is now doing very well. I watch videos by her when I am feeling particularly low, as it puts things into perspective and it gives me hope that things can get better no matter how far gone you are

But tonight I want you to practice just breathing. Feel your pain and accept it. Let it flow through you. When you have a thought about withdrawal, or anything, just redirect your attention to the sound of your breath. Deep belly breaths. It will calm you and it may just make you feel better.

Hi, Samantha.

Did I go back up to fast?   I'm back up to 200mg after super quick taper-My notes tell me that I was sleeping better at 150mg -but go back down again?

You haven't listed any information about how fast you've been tapering Klonopin, but from your signature, you were on 150 mg of Zoloft on December 16, so you likely were on a much higher dose of Klonopin than the .06 mg you mention on January 17. It's possible you were sleeping better due to being on a higher dose of Klonopin. So rushing your AD taper in hopes of better sleep may not be the best path forward right now. Due to the number of changes made in the past couple of months, it's really impossible to say what is causing what and a long hold may be your best path until your nervous system has had a change at some stability. This is especially true as you add in a new MS medication.

You've been tapering / adjusting more than one drug at a time, which is not recommended, especially by members who are struggling.

The rule of 3KIS: Keep it simple. Keep it slow. Keep it stable.

Keep in mind how these drugs work:

How psychiatric drugs remodel your brain

Please add your Klonopin history to your signature - the dates you were on, the dose you started taking and the dose you were at when you stopped taking it. Also, if you've been on other benzodiazepines or z-drugs (such as Ambien) in the past, please list your history with these drugs. A direct link to your signature is here:

I would not recommend tapering as you add in a new MS drug. The symptoms of MS and of withdrawal have too many similarities.

The below is taken from the Ashton Manual.  Dr. Ashton ran a benzodiazepine clinic for over a decade and noted the below in the section about symptoms (Ashton Manual - Withdrawal Symptoms) in relation to MS and how similar the symptoms are. This also has been documented on various benzo websites, as well.

Quote

Bodily sensations. All sorts of strange tinglings, pins and needles, patches of numbness, feelings of electric shocks, sensations of hot and cold, itching, and deep burning pain are not uncommon during benzodiazepine withdrawal. It is difficult to give an exact explanation for these sensations but, like motor nerves, the sensory nerves, along with their connections in the spinal cord and brain, become hyperexcitable during withdrawal. It is possible that sensory receptors in skin and muscle, and in the tissue sheaths around bones, may fire off impulses chaotically in response to stimuli that do not normally affect them.

In my clinic, nerve conduction studies in patients with such symptoms revealed nothing abnormal - for example, there was no evidence of peripheral neuritis. However, the symptoms were sometimes enough to puzzle neurologists. Three patients with a combination of numbness, muscle spasms and double vision were diagnosed as having multiple sclerosis. This diagnosis, and all the symptoms, disappeared soon after the patients stopped their benzodiazepines.

Due to the similarities of MS with benzo withdrawal symptoms, it's really important that you give your nervous system time to stabilize. This is especially true as you add in a new medication to treat your MS. It's important that you work with your MS doctor and give as accurate a picture of your symptoms as possible. Adding in additional symptoms due to rapid tapering from psych drugs will only complicate this.

For more on Ashton's work, please see:

Ashton and beyond in benzo tapering

Please update your signature with your benzo information and let us know how you're doing.

Sam, Tell us why you think the ER is the place to be?  I'm not saying you are wring, but trying to get more detail so I can give you my thoughts.  Are you suicidal or are you thinking something else entirely?

What do you think about the idea of revealing your benzo use in the drug sig?

Thought for the day: Lets stand up, and let’s speak out , together. G Olsen

We have until the 14th. Feb 2018.

URGENT REQUEST Please consider submitting  for the petition on Prescribed Drug Dependence and Withdrawal currently awaiting its third consideration at the Scottish Parliament. You don't even have to be from Scotland. By clicking on the link below you can read some of the previous submissions but be warned many of them are quite harrowing.

http://www.parliament.scot/GettingInvolved/Petitions/PE01651

Please tell them about your problems taking and withdrawing from antidepressants and/or benzos.

Send by email to petitions@parliament.scot and quote PE01651 in the subject heading. Keep to a maximum of 3 sides of A4 and you can't name for legal reasons any doctor you have consulted. Tell them if you wish to remain anonymous. We need the numbers to help convince the committee members we are not isolated cases. You have until mid February. Thank you

None of the published articles shed light on what ssri's ... actually do or what their hazards might be. Healy 2013.

This is so true, with anything you get on these drugs, dependance, tapering, withdrawal symptoms, side effects, just silent. And if there is something mentioned then their is a serious disconnect between what is said and reality!

"Every time I read of a multi-person shooting, I always presume that person had just started a SSRI or had just stopped."  Dr Mosher. Me too!

Over two decades later, the number of antidepressant prescriptions a year is slightly more than the number of people in the Western world. Most (nine out of 10) prescriptions are for patients who faced difficulties on stopping, equating to about a tenth of the population. These patients are often advised to continue treatment because their difficulties indicate they need ongoing treatment, just as a person with diabetes needs insulin. Healy 2015

I believe the ssri era will soon stand as one of the most shameful in the history of medicine. Healy 2015

Isn't it odd?!   It's not really suicidal thoughts; it's something else.  I noticed that at the time it was happening.  They are more like all the other unwanted thoughts I had.  They had nothing to so with being suicidal!! It really is strange, but it's also good that you have the thought at the same time "but I don't want to."  That is liberating isn't it?  That let's you relax and calm yourself.  You can say "Oh, it's a random thought caused by WD that means nothing at all.  I'm not suicidal, I'm just having random thoughts.  They could be about anything."

Mmm dehydrated.  Very likely.  I struggle with that, and we are not well.  So hydration becomes more important.  I hope you can drink something.  What makes you feel you can't?  You aren't vomiting are you?  Even if you are take little sips over and over.  Some of it will be absorbed even if you toss your cookies.

What. Is your BP reading?

I'm okay right now.  Thank you all for your responses.  I can't even consider tapering right now with my MS progressing.  It would be too difficult. I'm just going to stick with my Zoloft and later start tapering at least the Remeron.  I hope you will all be here for me when I start my journey.  Good luck to all and God Bless!

Are you ok, Sam? Did you go to E.R ? How is your BP now?

Many SSRI's and SSNRI's over 20 years. Zoloft for 7 years followed by Effexor, Lexapro, Prozac, Cymbalta, Celexa, Pristiq, Valdoxan, Mianserin and more - on and off. No tapering. Cold turkey off Valdoxan - end of May 2014

Yes, I did. My BP is fine now.  The ER doc said I went back up on Zoloft to fast and to lower it.  But I think i'm just going to stay at 200mg and hopefully stabilize.  I am depressed about my MS and don't know what to do.  I'm considering switching SSRI's but afraid of that too.  I feel trapped...

There was a margarine commercial back in the 1970s that spawned a great line that also applies to pharmaceuticals: "It's not nice to fool Mother Nature." When you do, someone is going to pay the price.

Hi SE,

When members are taking multiple drugs we recommend that they put all the drugs they are taking in the Drug Interactions Checker

I have had mild Serotonin Toxicity from too high a dose of Pristiq and I am very concerned that you are suffering from Serotonin Toxicity.  My concern is that it is not being recognised because of the MS.

Interactions between your selected drugs

Major

sertraline  mirtazapine

Applies to: Zoloft (sertraline), Remeron (mirtazapine)

Using sertraline together with mirtazapine can increase the risk of a rare but serious condition called the serotonin syndrome, which may include symptoms such as confusion, hallucination, seizure, extreme changes in blood pressure, increased heart rate, fever, excessive sweating, shivering or shaking, blurred vision, muscle spasm or stiffness, tremor, incoordination, stomach cramp, nauseavomiting, and diarrhea. Severe cases may result in coma and even death. You should seek immediate medical attention if you experience these symptoms while taking the medications. Talk to your doctor if you have any questions or concerns. Your doctor may already be aware of the risks, but has determined that this is the best course of treatment for you and has taken appropriate precautions and is monitoring you closely for any potential complications. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

_________________________________

Just because one doctor has said it isn't doesn't mean that you don't.  In the past I have had to advocate for myself when I was suffering MSG (monosodium glutamate) toxicity.  When I saw my doctor I explained that I was experiencing all over my body hives, extreme diarrhoea, racing heart, sweating and would get so weak I would have trouble standing..  He was not concerned.  I did my own research and discovered that what I had experienced was anaphalaxis.  It wasn't until I was assertive that I got sent off to a food allergy specialist and through an elimination diet it was proven that it was MSG (which by the way is a neuro toxin and tricks the brain into thinking that flavours taste stronger).

It was only through my own research that I realised that I was suffering serotonin toxicity on 100mg Pristiq.  Some of the symptoms that you have mentioned are things that I also had before my dose got lower.  My diastolic blood pressure increased a lot after going from 50mg to 100mg (and my regular doctor - a different one from above - didn't pick up that the Pristiq was the cause of it, he just increased my BP medication), my heart sometimes felt like it "flipped" or missed a beat, I was sweating a lot even in the middle of winter, most days I was sleeping 2 hours and still sleeping through the night.  It wasn't until my dose got lower that I realised that I had also felt on edge all the time and also experienced confusion.  I also think that some of the muscle aches and pains (which is what started me researching) that I had were due to serotonin toxicity.

It is because of my own experiences that I have described that I am so concerned for you.  It is important to realise that doctors are not perfect and they don't always get it right.

Samantha,

Getting a job, contributing to the household, making friends, tapering off of Zoloft etc. are all very important things. However, the most important thing right now is that you stabilize. These other issues can be addressed 4-6 weeks after you stabilize. A job, friends, etc. can still be there for you in the Spring or the Summer.

I wish I could give you advice on the medication but the amount of Zoloft you are on does not appear to be the problem as you were on this amount for 18+ years? Just looking at your signature, I can see the amount you have taken in the past couple of months has been all over the place which isn't allowing your Central Nervous System to heal. From everything I've read on this site, switching to another SSRI would not be a good change for you.

Please listen to the moderators if they are concerned about the possibility of Serotonin Toxicity. They can advise you on what to do if that is the problem here.

Effexor: 2003 - 2018 (75-150 mgs) Off at times in 2015 and 2017. Tapered from 37.5 mgs in May of 2017 to 5? mgs at the end December of 2017 and jumped. Reinstated 5 beads on 1/16/18 after struggling with withdrawal symptoms. Upped to 37.5 mgs on 1/19/18. Feeling great as of 2/23/18.

How do you measure 15mls of water?  Where do I get the syringe.. I have been on Remeron also.  Thank you!

Hi SamanthaElizabeth,

Get a 15 mls medicine cup from a pharmacy and a syringe. How much mitrazapine are you taking at the moment?

Then you take the amount needed.

If you don't like syringe, you can also get medicine dropper. The lowest amount you can draw out with a dropper is 2.5mls, and the highest amount is 10mls. So it it is useless as you go lower.

I hope that I have not confused you.

Best wishes,  Hopefull.

DRUG HISTORY:

November 2013- Zoloft, ( Bad reaction).

January 2014 - March 2014 Seroquel.( Quit Cold Turkey).

January2014- Mirtazapine, I was taking 15mg at one stage, reduced to 7.5mg, Pgad reactions to Mirtazapine. Doctor kept increasing it to 37.5mg, until July 2014. No improvement, experiencing panic attacks, on 37.5 mg. I had enough by October 2014. Began tapering.

October 2014- Started tapering Mirtazapine from 37.5mg.

September 2015- Down to 4mg of Mirtazapine. Crashed.

September 16th- Up dosed to 5mg. Held this dose for almost 5 months. Stabilised.

February 2016- Began tapering again. From 5mg to 4.5mg of Mirtazapine. (Rocking the boat, again)! Lol. :(

So, If I wanted to start tapering, should I start with Remeron or the Zoloft?  Can I ask my doc for a liquid form of it?  I don't know if I can make a home RX with Zoloft can I?  Should I ask my Pdoc for the soltabs of Remeron?  I don't want my sleep messed up.  Thank you!

Due to the number of changes made in the past couple of months, it's really impossible to say what is causing what and a long hold may be your best path until your nervous system has had a change at some stability. This is especially true as you add in a new MS medication.
