I've been a bit lower on the anxiety today and am a little proud that I made it into work and had an external meeting later in the afternoon and handled it ok.

Much to be proud of, Neroli.  Coping with your symptoms and working is really an amazing accomplishment.

Well done, my friend!

-1/06 - 3/07 Cymbalta. Fast taper (essentially CT); withdrawal symptoms after 4 mos (didn't realize was WD)

Hello @wantrelief

Thanks for your cheerleading.  It's kind of you to drop in and say hi.

Today has been rather different.  Just so tired, I could barely bear to read my emails.  I did go into the office but I think it was more my body that was there than my spirit.  Had big tears all over my manager (she's an easy cryer, so it's not upsetting for her if I do it).  Tired of dragging around two concrete legs, tired of being tired, tired of the silliness that goes on with the politics at work, tired of the constant restructures/reviews (our team is under review at the moment, we were told last week and a result is expected in April). Exhausted.

I work from home tomorrow, so I hope I have more motivation to get on with it.  If it's really hard, I can probably manage to have a reading day, rather than anything that needs creativity or brain power to put in place.  There's a little bit of wiggle room in the deadlines.

One of those days when I wonder how long I can keep up this work schedule....and how I would cope if I didn't have it.........

Hi Neroli,

How are you doing? Sorry you’ve been in tears. It made me smile when you said your manager is a big cryer, so she doesn’t mind you crying all over her. How have you been doing with work?💚

Hello @Carmie

Thanks for dropping in.  Got a big anxiety spike happening today.  It's rocking me quite badly.  Can't write much, I'm too bad to do much.

Hope you're doing ok.

Big hugs to you Neroli 🤗😃

Currently taking Ramapril (blood pressure) 5 mg twice a day

Omeprazole 10 mg AM and 20 mg PM  (the taper has gone nowhere after the first cut)

Famotidine   once a day (and I still needs tums sometimes)

magnesium 200 mg at night

as of yesterday 2 fish oil capsules "EPA-DHA 1000"

off Lexapro as of 5/2018  - last dose had been 5 mg every other day for a couple years

highest dose had been 20 mg at which point I was diagnosed with Bipolar II, which went away when I cut the lexapro down to 15 mg.

I spent years on Paxil before Lexapro (can't remember dose), briefly on Effexor and Abilify and others I have forgotten. in fact, when I was diagnoses with BPII I was put on all kinds of things which made me feel so bad I stopped them cold turkey within maybe 3 or 4 weeks, thank goodness. since then I've known these pills were terrible and I weaned down the Lexapro with zero help or support over I'm not sure how many years.

Hello @Carmie, @JackieDecides and @wantrelief

Thank you for your kind and welcome thoughts.

I am in bed, at last!, (7.00pm), trembly, exhausted and legs wobbly.  Just after I posted this afternoon I did an autogenic relaxation guided meditation (I've posted it before but here's the link again: (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t6jrkbgb9os ). Usually when I do this I doze off and don't hear it to the end but this time I was too much into anxiety to drop off.  However, it did help me to calm down, it's an hour long and by keeping my focus on the words and visualisations I did feel some relaxation coming over me.  After that I was able to do a bit of (shaky) knitting and bide my time to dinner, then blessed bed.

I'm not sure why the anxiety was so bad - haven't had one as big as that in a long time - but I've had a wobbly week.  Actually, looking back on a couple of week's worth of posts, though, I can see I've had some really wobbly days and some good days.

Yesterday was a good day - no exhaustion, no tears, no anxiety - just the lead legs.  And I was sociable at work and able to focus.  So my mind started thinking about all the things I would do today, seeing as I was feeling so good.  Including changing my bed sheets - not been done for a couple of months and here I am in the same ones tonight!

Then last night, I had a disturbed night (I think I got very cold in the early hours and from about 3.30 on I was trying to doze to that weird 852Hz "cleanse and let go of fear" mediation music.  So the day started with exhaustion and wobbly legs.  Managed my shopping and then went out to get some wool to make another baby outfit (even though I didn't want to go out again as I was wobbly).

After lunch I could feel I was very tired and would normally have done the autogenic relaxation and probably have had a doze which might have helped.  But instead, I had made a phone date with a woman and we talked about our CNS-damaged situations.  I can't relate her whole story - but for FORTY years, she has been on the drug poisoning merry-go-round being ripped off psych drugs and tried on several others and is still dealing with yet more of it.  It is shocking what the system has done to her.  I asked her to bottle some of her fortitude and courage and send it to me.

Anyway, I could feel my anxiety rising as we spoke, seems I was getting distressed at her story (though don't get me wrong, I really want to be a listening ear for her) and I think because of the exhaustion from the bad night's sleep, it tipped me over and I had the big wave.

I've managed to eat and tidy up and am now going to glaze over to Netflix until I take my last dose and settle down to what I hope will be a decent sleep at 9-ish.

Thank you all for your lovely messages.  I had meant to get round to everybody's thread today to see how you were all getting on, hope to be able to do that soon.

Hope you are all reasonably ok.  Think of you all every day.

xxx

I guess that is a good reason to post, to get more perspective. I feel like I can't tell very well how things are as I am too influenced by how I feel in the moment. I feel bad, I ALWAYS feel bad, you know?

what is the difference between autogenic relaxation and just any old guided meditation? I have a couple self-hypnosis CDs and one of them has "guilded meditations" too and not really sure of the difference.

I spent years on Paxil before Lexapro (can't remember dose), briefly on Effexor and Abilify and others I have forgotten. in fact, when I was diagnoses with BPII I was put on all kinds of things which made me feel so bad I stopped them cold turkey within maybe 3 or 4 weeks, thank goodness. since then I've known these pills were terrible and I weaned down the Lexapro with zero help or support over I'm not sure how many years.

what is the difference between autogenic relaxation

Hello JD

I don't know the difference to be honest - I've done other guided meditations but couldn't tell you the difference.  With autogenic relaxation the focus in on feeling lightness, heaviness and warmth in the body in tune with the breath.  You focus on different parts bit by bit.  I just find it helps me to doze, which I couldn't do before, and also I don't wake up feeling like I've been hit by a truck.

I know what you mean, I never feel fully good, there's always something to live with, hungers, wees, lead legs, exhaustion, anxiety, wobbliness, body aches - just so much.

I hope you have some good patches too.

If I can complain in 'real time', I was just getting into the bed and somehow clumsily bent my knee while putting my weight on it. It locked completely and now I can't move it at all for an hour. Maybe managed to strengthen it by 20 % with excruciating pain... Bizzare! Google knows nothing about it...sorry to complain on your thread...

Hi @wantrelief

Thank you for your lovely message on your thread.  I've come over to mine, so I don't clog up yours with my stuff.

You said "Hang in there, @neroli.  I know you may not necessarily feel like it, but you are doing a great job navigating this most difficult experience.  💖."

I probably am doing the best I can - as are you.  And I must remember there are better days.  Not that I'm running around being social on better days, just that I'm probably feeling less exhausted and not having anxiety, so I can relax and enjoy knitting.

If I may feel sorry for myself for a moment, a friend sent me a photo and message about a festival he had been to yesterday and said it had been fun.  That really cut into me - I so wish he hadn't said he'd had fun, I took a long time to get to sleep with that going round in my head - it was as if he was doing it to jibe me.  He knows I'm having a tough time; he knows what WD is like, as he's had it/is still getting bouts of it himself; he knows I don't feel "fun" at the moment and haven't for the past two years since I had the breakdown. Heck, I can't even get to book group mostly, I feel so yuck.

There I've splurged out my self-pity and anger.  And I know he probably didn't mean it in the way I describe - as my psychologist would probably say, it's because I haven't accepted my situation enough.

Oh my friend, how can we not feel sorry for ourselves sometimes?  We are only human. I think everyone here can definitely relate to your feelings upon receiving your friend's message.  I know I do.  It is so very hard to see others out and about having fun times.  It sounds especially hard given this person knows how you are feeling.  It seems like he would be way more sensitive given he actually knows what WD is like.

Thinking about you, my f-i-a.  You are not alone.  💗WR.

-1/06 - 3/07 Cymbalta. Fast taper (essentially CT); withdrawal symptoms after 4 mos (didn't realize was WD)

-10/07: 100 mg Zoloft; 1 mg Klonopin - tapered off Klonopin after 4 mos. Several unsuccessful slow tapers of Zoloft; went up and down in dose a lot

-Spring 2013 back on 1 mg Klonopin to counter WD symptoms; switched over 5-6 mos from Zoloft to 35 mg citalopram
-Two attempts at slow tapering citalopram, always increased dose due to WD; also increased Klonopin to 1.25 mg in 2014, then to 1.5 mg in 2015

I think I know what you mean.

sometimes I feel like friends are just rubbing my nose in how wonderful their lives are. they have families and homes and go on vacations!  some are retired, or are planning on it. I know I am not very far from trying to live in my car, so can't even imagine such riches they take for granted. but usually, eventually, I can be happy for them.

There I've splurged out my self-pity and anger.

yep, this is the place to do it!

big hugs to you! 🤗

Thinking about you, my f-i-a.  You are not alone.

yes, thanks, f-i-a, I do know I'm not alone and not in the direst of circumstances - there are plenty of people who are suffering so greatly.

So, the clock has struck 2pm and I'm working to rule - 2pm marks 6 1/2 hours work which is what I'm contracted to do.

Now I'm going to take a break on the couch and let the aches ease off a bit from sitting hunched over a tablet doing memos etc.  yet I'm grateful I have the option to do this, work from home and then retreat to the couch.

Thanks for enabling the splurge.

I do hope you are doing ok today

I have read some of your thread and it sounds so hard dealing with the weather, the long drives in the car, and the WD.  I am in awe of how you are coping.  I do hope you can find a resolution to your situation without having to live in your car.

It's very generous of you to send empathy and support.  Thank you so much.

Hugs and best wishes to you....

It's perfectly ok to feel upset and hurt. But you know what we are like: we don't really think all that much or can imagine how something we say will make the other person feel, especially when we feel good. This could be reframed like: if he was in WD and lost the ability to have fun but is finally able to experience it again soon, so will you :)

Hi Bubble

Thank you so much for coming back to me.  I'm glad I could be around when you messaged.  Good to hear that your knee has strengthened - that must have been a jolt for you.

I agree, it could be reframed like this - and I do have hope that this will be the case, it seems so long since I've had "fun", or been able to go out to something like the festival.   Actually , even without this condition, I would not have gone to the festival as it was estimated there would be thousands of people there and in the best of health I don't like battling with crowds like that.

I feel blessed if I can have a calm day.

Well, today I go to see the psychologist, with whom I am doing Acceptance and Commitment therapy.  Not sure I will tell her about my "fail" at being upset that my friend had fun.  The last time I said something like that she said it was because I hadn't fully Accepted my situation and Committing to living from my values.  That made me feel like I'd "failed" again.

Hope your evening is going well.

So glad you are here, I do appreciate you popping in from time to time.

Hi Neroli...I am sorry you are struggling but want you to know that I have NEVer imagined you as not accepting your situation nor as a failure...wuite the opposite....you are someone who has accepted it and is doing your very best to live with it while still doing for and giving to others as you live your life.  THAT us courage and resilience and acceptance and honesty and so much more!!

I think it was insensitive of your friend to say what he did...the fact that you see that to me means that you would not do it to someone else and that says so much about you and the person you are.  I am grateful you are that person!

I hope that you feel better soon and are able to get out to work...also grateful you are able to work from home.  I hope you will be kind to yourself and take the time you need at home.  Hugs and love my friend!💜

Thank you so much, Rabe.  I am crying as I read this.  I don't know what tomorrow will be like but my legs sure feel wobblier today.  I've been to see the psychologist and again I walk out feeling not helped by the session.  I am defensive and trying to explain that I do understand the viability of doing exercises, like meditation and thought delusion, to not add an extra burden to my symptoms (and.I have started doing these) but I seem to be banging my head against a wall to get them to understand that the destabilised CNS and current drugs I'm on play a big part in what I can do and how I feel.  And then when they say something like "you may have these thoughts and feelings but if you defuse them the symptoms will not be exacerbated) I feel as though I'm just being negative.  So I tell them that for three years when I was in protracted WD (as I knew it then) I continued to go to Toastmasters, even when I felt ill, I continued to go to the gym, even when I was rectching with the WDs, I continued to go to Yoga, even though I was shaky and weak, I continued to walk with friends, despite anxiety spikes and dizziness, I continued to work with anxiety, dizziness, inability to be in rooms of people for long. etc etc - until this breakdown which has now rendered every day a lottery of how much strength I've got in my legs, what can I manage to do?

I am going to have to make the decision whether to go again - I can't see it being of much use if I don't get anything affirming from it (even if it is my own 'negative bias' at play) but I worry that I am giving away something that might help me in the end.  It's a bit like when you think a friendship isn't working for you, but you hang in to see if it's your own prejudices/attitudes that are askew.

Anyway, I don't expect you to respond to this, Rabe, you keep your energy for getting yourself up to a better baseline.  You've just given me the opportunity to splurge out more....so thank you.

Hi Neroli,

I think many of us do as you have done...we keep pushing and pushing.  I did that and then my whole system collapsed 4 years ago....all the while my doctor saying you have to TRY something, you have to DO something....you used to be a contributing member of society.   Trying meant taking Lexapro and doubling the Clonazepam.  My trying made HER feel better not me.  Had I listened to myself way back then I believe I would be in a better place today.

Seems I have lost my own intuitions...I am swayed by the force of other voices instead of listening to the soft but wise (born of my experience) whisper of my own.  Most recently I listened to my therapist and psych doctor...both who said I have to stop being afraid and conquer my fears etc and have these tests.  So I had both when I thought should have only the upper GI.  I know now I was right....I have been set back hugely.....again which affects me and my family and my overall well being.  I have not seen my therapist in weeks....but like you wonder if I should keep the door open...IDK.  If and when I feel better perhaps.

What Im believing and hope you know is that you were right all along Neroli...your body was telling you to rest but you too were over powered by the voices of others.  You are so wise.....I hope that you will continue to listen to yourself and take good care of that lovely, most special gift that is you! Love and hugs!💜

And please feel free to splurge here anytime.  💜

I am so sorry you had a rough night and now a difficult day, Neroli.  I know all too well how hard it is to have hope when you are feeling so unwell and unlike yourself.  It is great you reached out so we can provide hope for you.  You have had much better days, even periods of calm, so will again my friend. I know it feels far away now but it will come your way again.  I know even the "better" days aren't "normal" ones but those days are ahead as well.  Keep hanging on as you are and just do what you can to get through the day.  I am thinking about you, my friend. 💖

-8/17-9/17: After holding one year at 20 mg, feeling withdrawal symptoms due to stress - slowly increased to 25 mg. No change in symptoms after 6 months (? tolerance ?)  - decided to start citalopram taper February 2018 (still on Klonopin 1.5 mg).

Supplements: fish oil; magnesium; vitamin D3; curcumin

Citalopram taper:  2/2018 - 12/2019: 25 mg - 11.03 mg I 2020: 10.89 mg - 7.9 mg I 2021: 7.8 mg - 5.26 mg I 2022: 5.2 mg - 3.36 mg I 2023: 3.3 mg - 1.47 mg 2024: 1/5/24: 1.44 mg; 1/19/24: 1.40 mg; 1/26/24: 1.37 mg; 2/2/24: 1.34 mg; 2/9/24: 1.31 mg; 2/23/24: 1.28 mg; 3/1/24: 1.25 mg; 3/8/24: 1.22 mg; 3/15/24: 1.19 mg

Oh Neroli....I am so sorry you are feeling so unsettled and unwell.  The lack of sleep just adds to everything.  I feel grateful that you called in to work and are just resting at home...I know that is hard for you to do.  There will be healing again and you will feel better again though I know how hard it is to believe that when feeling so so awful.  These waves do an awfully fine job of covering the calm and clarity below....but it is still there.  Take care my dear friend.  I wish I could be there to give you a huge hug and tell you in person you are ok...it will get better!!  Love and hugs!!💜

Neroli,

Please remember that your therapist does not and cannot understand what is going on with you.  She has not experienced it.  She has not been taught about it, and most of all, her profession does not allow her to believe the truth.

At this point in my recovery, I can sometimes feel the difference between real anxiety and "fake" anxiety.  Fake anxiety happens when physical processes in my body are causing an anxious or lethargic feeling.  It is very, very clear that there is no reason to feel fear, but that fear is overwhelming.  There are other times when I am in a window, and I can tell that I am operating close to the way people do if they do not have a compromised CNS.  My startle response seems normal, my ability to ignore intrusive thoughts seems normal, etc.. For a very long time I was essentially in a wave nearly constantly.  Now that I am not the waves are quite obvious, and the fact that my body and brain are sending faulty signal back and forth is obvious, too.

The effect of this syndrome we call WD is not in any textbook, not taught in any mainstream class for therapists, in a word, not recognized.  It requires digging and effort to find any education about it.  Your therapist is operating on information which does not apply to you.  Yes, trying harder might have worked prior to the destabilization of your CNS, but now there is a delicate dance going on.  I live this dance every single day.   I have no idea how hard to push myself, when to hold back, when to be gentle.  It's touch and go every moment of the day.  Quite frankly, I'm not sure that it matters what I do or don't do except that doing nothing "seems" to result in feeling worse.  Stress is really the only thing that is very clearly harmful, and stress can come from almost anywhere at any time.  I can't do much to control for that.  I simply must muddle through.

I find it very troubling that you feel worse coming out of a session, but your therapist is only doing what she thinks is right.  She isn't even aware of the fact that your brain is struggling to keep a balance and creating new imbalances in doing so.  I don't know what she would say if she knew.  Tell you to do what you can when you can and stop when you feel you must?  Maybe.  So, you have to keep in mind that she's not aware of the full picture.  Take from her what seems to help and try to ignore the rest.

Hello @Rosetta

Good points you make.  And I agree that she won't have the understanding or experience and is only doing what she can by providing me with tools that she thinks may help.

The fact is that, despite doing the meditation and relaxation and attempting to defuse thoughts, I am becoming more and more exhausted and anxious/experiecnign anxiety, legs are wobblier and I'm frightened that I will have to give up work.

There is nothing she can do about this.  The ball is in my court.

I just don't want to be told, when I report eg. I'm feeling more depressed, that it's because I haven't accepted my situation and fully committed to living from my core values, when I think I'm doing my best to accept and find ways to cope with work and commuting, work being one of my core values

Therefore, there is possibly nothing I can get out of further sessions with her.  Still pondering that.

Yes, I am not sure of the value of therapy while in WD.  I'm quite sure it is useful for some.  Some therapist do not push their patients.  They merely hold the hand and support.  That's not good for people who need help to change, but what can you change?  Your symptoms are going to occur regardless.  I do like the fact that she's trying to help you accept instead of telling you that you are not getting better because you aren't trying to change your thoughts.  This is a very tough situation.  The Windows and waves don't allow us to see progress very easily and progress happens on its own.  Trying to cope in the meantime is what is important.  You are going to cycle between acceptance and non-acceptance.  It's easier to accept a dirty window than a wave.  It's easier to accept a wave when it begins than after it has hung on for weeks.  Feeling like a failure is a very big part of WD for me.  This isn't "who" I want to be.  This is not how I want to live.  So, having a therapist tell me I am failing at therapy -- no thank you.  Still you need on the ground support.  Maybe you should talk with her about that and see if she can change her language to make you feel less like a failure and more like the hero you are -- you go to work!! -- that is truly incredible to me.  A failure you are not!!!

Notes:

Haven't managed to get to the office all week - legs have just felt too unreliable, as has the ability to control weeping sessions and depression/SI.

Have worked at home and managed to plug at it for my contracted hours, though it's been hard and anxiety-inducing.

Experiencing more depression and anxiety this week.

Lots of fatigue.

Day 56 of the last reduction I made in Diazepam (0.25mg).

A big wave, or the meds. making my condition worse?  Who knows, I don't.

Positives: there have been some calm moments and I've been able to knit and colour in my adult colouring book, and yesterday managed a 30 minute walk (pulled a knee muscle/tendon, though).
