Hello Bubble

Just wanted to briefly share my experience of starting Lexapro taper from a position of instability and lots of symptoms. There was definitely great fear of things getting even worse and spiralling out of control. Incredible fatigue was also a major symptom: I couldn't get out of bed for 2 days. It felt as if I had influenza. I somehow manage to ride it out and subsequent cuts were not so bad.

Thank you for this - it is encouraging to hear that subsequent cuts were not as bad as the first.  As I mentioned to RichT above " Maybe my next trial will be when I don't have to work (say take some leave) and see what pans out over a whole week"

I do appreciate you popping in - I don't know how you manage 8-hour work days - I'd have to find a floor to lie on just like you do and I'd be so fatigued at the end of that day, I don't know if I'd manage the commute back.  I'm so fortunate to be able to work at home but I will have to show my face in the office again soon.

Lots of warm wishes to you

Hello Alto

Thank you for coming in again.

if you cannot taper escilatopram, you might taper nortriptyline. One way or the other, if your symptoms are from a drug-drug interaction (which seems likely), you will need to reduce a drug.

Yes, I've been pondering this and was erring on the side of Nortriptyline.  I just didn't know whether holding might bring me to a better baseline but if the drug interactions are causing the worsening in the legs, then reducing seems the way to go.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Hello Mr McVities Biscuit (don't leave it dunked in the tea too long or half of it will drop off to the bottom of the cup - ex-pat Brit here)

Thank you for popping in.

Ha! Well, there's the rub, isn't it.  I can only say that I had some major melt-downs and tremendous fatigue which seemed to be greater than "normal".  Maybe my next trial will be when I don't have to work (say take some leave) and see what pans out over a whole week.  Would need to have supports in place as the depression was rather deep.

I'm hoping you are going ok with your taper - you've done very well on the Abilify and Clonazepam.

Best of the best to you

Hi Neroli,

that sounds like like a wise approach.  I hope you feel better soon.

Notes:

Yesterday I was stretched out to the limits again.  Legs were even heavier and the wooziness had increased, with nausea and fatigue.  I had a mild anxiety attack in the afternoon as was quite frightened by it.

Today: as different again.  Legs still heavy, but no anxiety, no nausea, no fatigue and very little wooziness - mood lighter and my sense of humour edged its way through.

Things to be grateful for:

Days like today - a relief from the heaviness of all this drug damage stuff

Being able to laugh in a teleconference team meeting.

Still being allowed to work from home (soooooo fortunate)

Appreciating a deep, burning orange sunset.

Energy to potter around a bit, filling moisturising lotion bottles, cleaning up waste bins - just little things that I don't have the oomph to do at other times.

Bed and Netflix.

Legs have worsened.  Getting very stiff and achy quads and calves now, less ability to walk or stay on them for long. Level 7-8-9 most of the time.  Aches at night when in bed.

Also note aches in the lower back and between the scapular have appeared in the past few weeks.

I'm so sorry. 😕

I'm going to take you as an example this morning and post some things I am grateful for.

Currently taking Ramapril (blood pressure) 5 mg twice a day

Omeprazole 10 mg AM and 20 mg PM  (the taper has gone nowhere after the first cut)

Famotidine   once a day (and I still needs tums sometimes)

magnesium 200 mg at night

as of yesterday 2 fish oil capsules "EPA-DHA 1000"

off Lexapro as of 5/2018  - last dose had been 5 mg every other day for a couple years

highest dose had been 20 mg at which point I was diagnosed with Bipolar II, which went away when I cut the lexapro down to 15 mg.

I spent years on Paxil before Lexapro (can't remember dose), briefly on Effexor and Abilify and others I have forgotten. in fact, when I was diagnoses with BPII I was put on all kinds of things which made me feel so bad I stopped them cold turkey within maybe 3 or 4 weeks, thank goodness. since then I've known these pills were terrible and I weaned down the Lexapro with zero help or support over I'm not sure how many years.

Also note aches in the lower back and between the scapular have appeared in the past few weeks.

Reduced Nortrityline by 2.5mg on Monday.

Oh my friend, I am really sorry to hear your legs have worsened.  On a positive note, you've started decreasing nortriptyline.  I want to recognize how much courage it takes to make a cut midst all of this unknown.  I am really hopeful as you continue your way down your legs will improve as well as the other symptoms.  Thinking about you, WR.

-1/06 - 3/07 Cymbalta. Fast taper (essentially CT); withdrawal symptoms after 4 mos (didn't realize was WD)

-10/07: 100 mg Zoloft; 1 mg Klonopin - tapered off Klonopin after 4 mos. Several unsuccessful slow tapers of Zoloft; went up and down in dose a lot

-Spring 2013 back on 1 mg Klonopin to counter WD symptoms; switched over 5-6 mos from Zoloft to 35 mg citalopram
-Two attempts at slow tapering citalopram, always increased dose due to WD; also increased Klonopin to 1.25 mg in 2014, then to 1.5 mg in 2015

-8/17-9/17: After holding one year at 20 mg, feeling withdrawal symptoms due to stress - slowly increased to 25 mg. No change in symptoms after 6 months (? tolerance ?)  - decided to start citalopram taper February 2018 (still on Klonopin 1.5 mg).

Supplements: fish oil; magnesium; vitamin D3; curcumin

Citalopram taper:  2/2018 - 12/2019: 25 mg - 11.03 mg I 2020: 10.89 mg - 7.9 mg I 2021: 7.8 mg - 5.26 mg I 2022: 5.2 mg - 3.36 mg I 2023: 3.3 mg - 1.47 mg 2024: 1/5/24: 1.44 mg; 1/19/24: 1.40 mg; 1/26/24: 1.37 mg; 2/2/24: 1.34 mg; 2/9/24: 1.31 mg; 2/23/24: 1.28 mg; 3/1/24: 1.25 mg; 3/8/24: 1.22 mg; 3/15/24: 1.19 mg

Hello @JackieDecides @wantrelief and @Rosetta

Thank you for your kind, supportive and encouraging words.

This is even more frightening now - I can barely walk today, feel very shaky and tired out.

Don't know whether to updose again.

I feel like I will never get off these drugs and be able to walk again.  I  know that is a hopeless thought to have but it's a real experience of worsening symptoms.

Do you think this is the result of the cut or the regular ebb and flow that you have been experiencing? How about other symptoms?

Symptoms which are a result of cut peak for some time after the cut and then subside. It is scary but you can try to adopt a perspective of let's see what happens next. You can always updose if things get too uncomfortable. But you don't have to go all the way up from where you decreased since it's been over 5 days and some adjustments have been made. Hang in there. It passes.

Thank you @bubble

It feels a bit more than the previous ebb and flow.  But I could try to ride it out and see if it improves over the next few days.  Just really scared that I won't be able to walk.  Alto has suggested that cutting one drug (esp. when we are older - and I'm 62) can make the effects of another drug more pronounced and I'm always wondering if the Escitalopram is affecting my legs because the original Citalopram did but not to this great extent (I keep harping on about this, I know) .

I can call in sick to work if necessary.  My GP is about to write a letter to my manager to say that I can only work from home at the moment as my legs are so unstable.  So I could try to ride it out and see what happens - I do tend to get a bit like a frightened rabbit when I make cuts and marked effects happen - I'd been able to cut Nortrip. before without too much wobble.

Thank you so much for your support.  Know that you are helping someone on the other side of the world with your encouragement and kind words.

Very best wishes to you

That sounds like a good plan: let's what happens over the next few days. If reducing nortriptyline caused worsening of the situation with legs (temporary) reducing the drug might make it better because it looks like nortp. affects legs... Just speculating.

We all feel like frightened rabbits when WD hits us. RachelSusan wrote about it the other day. I'm glad when my brain feels a bit clearer and I can return kindness :)😘

Remember that this is not linear -- in either direction.  Getting worse does not mean you are going to be disabled permanently.  I know that's cold comfort as you were all ready very frustrated to be somewhat disabled.  (((Neroli)))

Thank you, Rosetta, it's good to be made aware of this.  There's a woman called Fiona French in Scotland who has been left bedridden for about 5 years and is just reporting some small improvement, at the age of 65.  I guess I fear that.  Loss of even more independence and control of my life.

But, good that you have provided another perspective, that helps, thank you.

Sorry to hear that Neroli, I have experienced similar symptoms in my legs and arms - very unpleasant.

I hope you get some relief soon.

Thank you RichT

Yes, I've had this for over two years now and getting worse is frightening me.  Guess I just have to see how things go and adjust to whatever turns out.  Flippin' 'eck, get sick of this stuff.  Just got to keep dealing with whatever the day brings and make the best of it as I can.

Hope you're doing ok.

Hi Neroli...I have personally found this to be true both in starting and tapering the two meds....one affects the other.  SO I think for a time there

is a settling of both meds before the other can settle in...IDK if is real but it has always felt that way to me.

Thank you for your insight, dear Rabe.  I guess I get really scared when I feel a wobble and wonder if I'm going to crash.  I will give this reduction a time to settle.

Thinking of you, too, as you find your way through dyes and cross-overs and different meds. Sheesh what a process you have to get through.  You're a brave woman going ahead like you are and coping.

love to you, PF

Things to be grateful for:

Encouragement and support from every wonderful person on this site.

Managed to get out for a walk with a friend (who dragged me out, actually)

A friend who will drag me out

Sun on my skin

Watching dogs playing in the dog park

Local school-girl neighbours who came and washed my windows and outside walls.

Their mum who was a paramedic and believed that the drugs could have done this to me.

Managing to make my own lunch and dinner

at the moment rather fatigued but it may lift, legs are heavy as usual.

I am taking a couple of days off work, so that I can re-calibrate.

I will be working on an email to my niece and will do some knitting and colouring - both of those help as a calming tool.

Hope you manage to get yours out and do a few rows. :)

Thank you, Rosetta.

I have had a much better day - my mood has been brighter and more relaxed.

I did some treadmill exercises with the physiotherpist (doing 2 mins walking at as fast a pace I could, then resting and the doing another 2 minutes with music playing through ear phones).  The difference was that I could get up to a higher speed with the music on.  She's working on distraction from the symptoms to see if it helps.  I think it's to do with neuroplasticity and teaching the neural pathways to go along different, more beneficial routes.  As far as I understand it, anyway.

I'm hoping you've had a better day, too - one of those where you are quite relaxed. It's such a lovely feeling when it happens.

Thank you for dropping by.

Notes:

Fatigue and heavy legs have been at level 8-9-10 all day.  I think it's probably because I overdid it at the gym with the physiotherapist yesterday - or it could be a super-wave.  Whatever, it's been a long, tough day and I'm pleased to be in bed at last.  I wish this meant that I would sleep like a log and wake up later - but I guess it will be the usual pattern of Nortriptyline black-out to around 3.30am, then light sleep or dozing to 5.45am when I cannot sleep anymore and have to get up.

Things to be grateful for:

My legs carried me around enough today to be able to look after myself.

Was able to do work at home.

Knitting, which helped me get through the afternoon.

Videos of people gong through the same sorts of issues from these drugs, makes me feel less isolated.

Support from people on this site.

Im sorry you had a rough day today Neroli.  I do find that I have a bad day and the a good day...and on the good day I walk more and do more and then the next day I am often back to being not well again.  Hard to find a 'balance' in all this.  Im grateful for you! 💜

Notes:

After very heavy fatigue and lead leggedness in the first part of the day, I perked up mid-morning and had an ok day - brighter and without anxiety.   Got through the day on my own with very little thought of loneliness.

Things to be grateful for:

A neighbour who will take me grocery shopping.

Long talk with neighbour on the phone.

No anxiety today.

Bludgeoning fatigue lifted.

Wees and hungers have abated considerably.

Messages from SA member.

Easing of the legs in the afternoon.

Bedtime.
