Does Prozac cause tinnitus? Does anyone have ideas about how to relieve this?

For me only distraction works, getting involved in something else. My tinnitus is worse when I am relaxed, resting...

I have now been referred to ENT, as I have a something with the eardrum, may be the cause of the problem. I have two types of tinnitus, pulsation and hissing, but I also get a refrigerator sound. I noticed this one is worse when I am excited...

I will. All during my taper I had moderate tinnitus consistently all day long, even when I would wake up during the night.  As I tapered is slowly resolved itself decreasing as I decreased the medication.  It did however lag several months behind the taper.  Now that I am drug free (seven months next week) it is greatly decreased.  I don't think it will ever go away because of damage I have gotten over the years from working with very loud machinery.  But it's nothing like it was a couple of years ago.

20 years on Paxil starting at 20mg and working up to 40mg. Sept 2011 started 10% every 6 weeks taper (2.5% every week for 4 weeks then hold for 2 additional weeks), currently at 7.9mg. Oct 2011 CTed 15oz vodka a night, to only drinking 2 beers most nights, totally sober Feb 2013.

Since I wrote this I have continued to decrease my dose by 10% every 6 weeks (2.5% every week for 4 weeks and then hold for an additional 2 weeks). I added in an extra 6 week hold when I hit 10mg to let things settle out even more. When I hit 3mgpw it became hard to split the drop into 4 parts so I switched to dropping 1mgpw (pill weight) every week for 3 weeks and then holding for another 3 weeks.  The 3 + 3 schedule turned out to be too harsh so I cut back to dropping 1mgpw every 4 weeks which is working better.

Current dose 0.000mg 04-15-2017

I noticed Tinnitus [high pitched tone] started to appear about 6 weeks after starting Citalopram which I didn't have prior to starting on the med - or at least I wasn't aware of it.  I've been working in an environment [Intel Fab] with loud high pitched noises the past 17 years so maybe the Citalopram side effect contributed to the Tinnitus to appear [Studies suggest serotonin may worsen tinnitus] :(

Drug history - I take the medicine at 2am due to shift work which has allowed me to sleep through nausea/drowsy side effects.

  • Aug 9/10 - Citalopram started Aug 9, 2017 for anxiety.  Doctor prescribed 20mg, cut pill in half to get use to nausea first couple of days.
  • Aug 11/12 - 20mg, slight chest tightness/intrusive thoughts 2nd night, reduced back down to 10mg
  • Aug 13-Sept 19 = 10mg.
  • Sept 20-27 = Increased anxiety while waiting for refill, increased to 15mg - encountered slight cough/cold like symptoms.
  • Sept 28/29 - 20mg bad chest tightness/Panic Attack during the night.  Dropped back down to 10mg.
  • Sept 30- present 10mg  [tried tapering down to 8.7 on Nov 4th mild side effects 3 days afterwards]

Late last year I went off zoloft completely for around 2 months and reinstated after some insomnia.  I also added remeron for sleep.  I believe going off zoloft sensitized me to substances because after drinking coffee and smoking in march I developed tinnitus, which worsened to random beeping after I again smoked/drank coffee.  I'm barely sleeping/tolerating it and can't afford for it to get worse.  However, I have numerous things I want to do: fish oil, magnesium, running, occasional caffeinated soft drink, spicy food, etc. which I'm afraid made my tinnitus worse recently after months of doing them. Fish oil, magnesium, soft drinks, spicy food affect dopamine and serotonin which is why I'm hesitant to keep doing them (even though it is significantly less so than smoking and coffee).  I also would like to go off remeron and/or risperidone but I think my tinnitus would only worsen.  Among those who have developed tinnitus, have you noticed that any of the above things (fish oil magnesium etc.) made your tinnitus worse?  I'm even hesitant to eat chocolate because it contains caffeine.  Anyone with similar experiences?

jan 2012: started 1 mg risperdal 50 mg zoloft | sep 2014: 2 mg risperdal 150 mg zoloft | jan 2016: 3 mg risperdal 200 mg zoloft | june - sept 2016: tapered to 1 mg risperdal 50 mg zoloft over 3 months.  reinstated 3 mg risperdal after insomnia.  still at 50 mg zoloft | oct 2016: went off zoloft | nov 2016: insomnia.  reinstated 3 mg risperdal, 200 mg zoloft, plus 15 mg remeron. | april 2017: 22.5 mg remeron. | dec 17 2019: 187.5 mg zoloft | dec 24 2019: 175 mg zoloft | apr 9 2020: 162.5 mg zoloft | may 11 2020: 150 mg zoloft

current drugs: before bed - 3 mg risperdal, 22.5 mg remeron | morning - 150 mg zoloft

current supplements: before bed - 1 g NAC, lion's mane mushroom | morning - 1 g NAC, beta carotene, 500 mg l-lysine

I haven't noticed any substances outside of psych drugs that make tinnitus better or worse.

I developed very loud tinnitus, a constant hissing sound that is there all day but especially loud when trying to sleep, when I first went onto Zoloft 100mg.

It continued more or less constantly until I reduced to around 70mg.

Reinstating Zoloft @ 15mg again a few weeks ago, the tinnitus started yet again. It has not diminished yet. It seems quite clear that Zoloft is the cause of it, although why it is happening now at a much lower dose I am not sure. I think it's probably an interaction between Zoloft and a very stressed nervous system. They seem to multiply together worsen tinnitus. On this note, reducing stress seems very important to reduce tinnitus. Of course this is very hard, I know, since tinnitus is itself stressful.

It's definitely worse when tired, late at night, and when particularly anxious. It's also worse when focussing on it. The only useful things I have found are to try and let go of reaction to it, to let go of control. Usually this is consciously releasing a tensing up or a preoccupation with it. I think to some degree it's possible to tune out in the same way that people living next to train tracks or motorways start to tune out those sounds (and sleep through them) after some time.

  • 2008: Started Citalopram 30mg
  • Sept 2014: Tapered down Citalopram over 6 months and discontinued Feb 2015
  • Severe withdrawals peaked in July/Aug 2015. Totally housebound.
  • Sept 2015: Sertraline started @ 100mg on GP advice.
  • Oct to Dec 2015: Reduced to Sertraline 50mg due to side effects.
  • Jan 2016 to March 2017: Tapered Sertraline to 2mg @ 10% per month.
  • Severe withdrawals peaked again June 2017. Totally housebound.
  • Diazepam: July 2017 5mg // Aug 2017 2.5mg // Sept 2017 1mg // 12th Dec 2017 0.85mg
  • Sertraline Reinstatement: 23 Oct 2017 5mg // 15 Nov 2017 10mg // 23 Nov 2017 15mg

Hi, I too developed this after dropping off 2.4 mirtazepine (most people taper this amount over 6-12 months).  This was almost 7 months ago.  For me, I had been discontinuing, reinstating, adding drugs in a short amount of time, and I believe this created CNS sensitivity.

It has been unremitting, even gotten louder over the last few months.  I am just hoping for the best at this point.

James, I do find that I am able to somewhat tune it out as you said above although with the volume increasing, I am finding that harder and harder to do.  In a kind of perverse move, I try not to drown it out with white noise.  I use noise-cancelling headphones sometimes to drown the ambient sounds just to "listen" to it, lol.

I do know of others who have seen improvement (freespirit, kara100), so I am hopeful.  It's a horrible symptom for sure.

I hope others who experience it, past or present, chime in with their experience.

All the best

PAST

Gabapentin:  about 6 months in 2015, 300-900 mg, cold turkeyed Sept 2015 (at same time dc'd Klonopin)

Klonopin: June 2014- Sept 2015; 1mg tapered over 6 mths, dc'd at 0.25mg, withdrawal hellish (perhaps because of concurrent dc of gabapentin)

Mirtazepine: Jumped off at 2.4 mg. (stable in 8 months).

Seroquel:  June 14 - July 24, 2016, 25 mg alternate nights; smaller doses for shorter periods. Total use about 3 months

Lamictal: March 19, 2018 - 1 mg; March 23 - 1.25 mg; April 6 - 2mg. Discontinued at 2 mgJuly 1, 2018 due to Steven Johnson Syndrome.

CURRENT

Supplements: Vit D, turmeric

Naturethroid: 65 mcg for hypothyroidism

Trazodone: Oct 2015 - June 2016; 75 mg tapered over 2 mths, intense w/d after 3 weeks. Reinstatement: 07/25/16 - 25 mg; updosed 08/03/16 - 50 mg;  10/01/16-  62mg; 03/24/17 dropped to 50 mg (stable in 2.5 months)

Current psych meds: Trazodone 50 mg

I developed tinnitus after upping my dose of Wellbutrin from 150 to 300 mg.  It happened almost immediately.  At the time i was in withdrawal from Abilify and Trintellix and was on a number of different medications prescribed by my psychiatrist.  I have been having some relief by wearing hearing aids, distracting, and telling myself over and over that the noise is not life-threatening or anything to be frightened of.  I cut my coffee down to 3 cups of instant per day.  Too vigorous exercise ramps it up, so I have been trying to take gentle walks in the sun.  As opposed to what I did in the beginning, I now avoid reading anything on the subject except success stories.   When someone tells me it will get better, I try to believe them.

RealMe,

I agree that reading everything about tinnitus is counterproductive.  So many do not find relief and I do not want to know about that, so like you I only read the positive ones.  I hope we eventually find relief as it is a nasty symptom.

Hello Remeron88,

To answer your question, I do not have triggers for my tinnitus.  It started immediately after dropping mirtazepine, and continues unabated.  I have used fish oil and mag and did not notice any effects from them.

Unfortunately, I think only time will bring relief ...

My tinnitus is really harrowing because it involves a sporadic beeping that is very hard to ignore/mask and therefore threatens to prevent me from sleeping.  I wish I just had the ringing alone, but I have both the ringing and the beeping...

Foggyhead

I have had tinnitus since stopping Lexapro 13 months ago. It waxes and wanes. Lack of sleep and stress makes it worse. Try not to think about it. I have habituated to it for the most part. It gets worse when you are cued into it and start worrying about it. In our cases from what I read is the tinnitus is related to a neurochemical imbalance caused by the drugs that with time will subside.

1994-2015: Many trials of SSRIs for anxiety and depersonalization coupled to the anxiety.

2013 to 04-2016: Clonazepam .5 three times a day. Slowly tapered on 04-2016. Withdrawal was hell for 6 months them stabilized.

2013 to 2014: Celexa 20mg

2014- to 01-2016: 20mg Prozac

01-2016 to 11-15-2016: 10mg Lexapro. Did a 2 month taper to zero on 11-15-2016. the last 5mg were water titration.

12-25-2016 Started having sleeping issues. By 01-01-2017 sleep disappeared for 4 days. Was hospitalized for three days.

01-01-17 to 01-10-2017 Trial of 37.5mg for three days than 75mg Effexor. Created major anxiety so I stopped it.

01-16-2017 to 01-26-2017 Trial of Brintellix 10mg. Stopped due to aggravating sleep issue and anxiety.

02-10-2017 to 02-17-2017 Reinstated 5mg of Lexapro. Usual startup anxiety and foggy head. Started getting tinnitus. Stopped the Lexapro thinking that caused the tinnitus.

I got tinnitus after a month of taking cipralex/lexapro. I had to increase my dose every three days from 1 drop to 20. I only got to 12 drops as the side effects were too bad. I have had tinnitus ever since. Mine is similar to ships whistles continuously. As others have said it is worse when the anxiety is high, which since w/d and reinstating in July 2017 , has been constant. Fortunately the past few weeks I have some better days when the anxiety lessens and the tinnitus reduces. I try to just ignore it and wear ear plugs at night.

2006 After sudden death of mother put on 20mg of citaloprom for depression.

2014 Drug stopped working after two weeks of panic attacks felt fine.

Aug 2014. Doctor put me on lyrica for rash on face, diarrhoea, sleeplessness, muscle cramp, bruising. Initial dose too strong, halved dose.  Stopped taking it 22/10/14

2014 severe anxiety after several ssri's attempted, seem to have developed severe  sensitivity to any drug, but giving severe  reactions put on cipralex drop form.started on 2 drops and had to increase by 1 drop every 3 days. Eventually got to 12 drops and had to stop as side effects every step of the way dreadful. Psychiatrist kept telling me to stick with it and my body would get used to it.  Eventually down to 8 drops. Bad reactions throughout the time I was on it

Have been on this until may 2017. Stopped over two weeks. Felt fine for 5 weeks after initial dizziness, nightmares, nausea, insomnia.

Given diazepam by gp and told to take them when anxiety bad. Have only taken them very rarely as they frighten me.

Last two weeks severe anxiety returned and feeling hopeless

11July 2017. Cipralex 2mg. Anxiety, nausea still severe

13 July 2017 Cipralex 1mg due to advice of too high dosage  by kind person on thus site. so dropped from 2mg to 1mg and feelings of anxiety still at severe. As well as nausea, headaches, fatigue.

15 July still feeling extremely anxious verging on panic. Nausea, feelings of fainting, fatigue. Lots of head pains

3 August. Three weeks into trying to stabilise on one drop of cipralex. Still have waking from 4am. Sporadic upset stomach. Nausea.  High anxiety.  Throbbing/burning in nether regions seems to have eased for time being but stabbing/burning in calves of legs. Tinnitus. Occasional half to whole better days but mainly still struggling. Fatigue

Dear all,

I  have constant tinnitus for 8 months now since I stopped Sertraline. I was only 2 weeks on the drug when I got a lot of side effects ( feeling suicidal, agitation, tremors). I had been on several benzos (Xanax, lysanxia, bromazepan and back to xanax) for only 4 months prior to take Sertraline. I had never taken an antidepressant before. A psychiatrist in a psychiatric hospital made me stop Xanax cold turkey and put me on Sertraline so I don't know if my tinnitus is a withdrawal symptom from stopping Xanax cold turkey or stopping sertraline. I got so many side effects from Sertraline that I brought down my dose from 50 mg to 25 mg and then I got plenty of withdrawal effects (hyperacusis, sensitivity to smells, depression, agitation) and my last withdrawal symptoms were PGAD (persistent genital arousal disorder) and tinnitus.  8 months later,  I am off Sertraline and on Xanax during the day and zopiclone at night. I still have tinnitus and PGAD, these symptoms make my life very difficult.

What helps :

I listen to white noise on  Yutube to help me sleep at night and during the day I avoid to be in silence (I keep my windows open, the sound of nature helps).

I take homeopathy

I see a great  behavioural psychologist who also have tinnitus  and he is teaching me how to cope with it.

I notice that when I am in a wave my tinnitus gets louder (my PGAD also gets worse). So I keep repeating to myself that there will be less and less waves and more and more windows.

I think acupuncture helps

I see a chiropractor also and she seems to help (for PGAD also). I spoke to a lot of people with tinnitus who assure me that you learn to cope with it with time then you don't really notice it anymore.

Something not to do is to take benzos to help you cope with tinnitus, it will make your withdrawal worse and as a result your tinnitus will spike.

And I keep repeating to myself the wise words from my pharmacist: " It is a  medication side effect, your hearing nerve is not damage, it will go when you will be off all your drugs !"

We need to have hope but it is true that tinnitus is really a pain in the ear ! (mine sounds like an old TV and it is in my left ear but it travels Inside the left side of my brain, when I am in a wave,Ialso get ears pains and migraines)

I wish you a lot of courage.

Take good care

Cathy

Yesterday I tried fish oil and my tinnitus worsened in bed.  Is this likely coincidental and have you noticed that tinnitus usually ebbs and flows on its own?  It seems every substance I add to my body has an impact.

Hi Remeron88,

I take magnesium, vitamin d, and fish oil every night around 10 p.m., and I never notice any difference in T afterward.  My T also ebbs and flows, and I cannot seem to correlate anything causative except that heavy exercise and very loud environments definitely spike it.  My ENT said, "some people claim lipo-flavinoids help," but I cannot offer any experience of my own on those.  I tried them briefly but stopped because one of the moderators suggested limiting supplements to magnesium and fish oil.  Like you, I find I am also very sensitive to substances.  That's why I am limiting them while I try to stabilize on the AD.  I know what you are going through, and I can testify that I am definitely coping better than I was at first.  Right now I'm reading Claire Weekes' book, Self Help For Your Nerves.  I am trying to learn how to accept my symptoms as temporary and not react with fearful emotions.  Sometimes, it's like whistling in the dark, hoping somebody comes by with a candle.  I Google success stories, and I go to them for encouragement and coping strategies. I hope and pray you find relief.

I have the tinnitus after CT lexapro 14 months ago.  Constant from the time I wake up. Diet stress, etc., has no real effect on it.

I've learned to live with it and consider it to be one of the more benign WD symptoms.

wellbutrin back in the 90's

various ssri's since then,  lexapro 20mg 10yrs

lots of aspartame 2yrs prior to quitting

quit C/T >1 year, had grandmal seizure @2 months off

1mg klonopin nightly post seizure - now cut to .5mg

Psychiatric drugs are OTOTOXIC, meaning they damage ear cells and parts of the ear and it can effect your hearing and balance.

I was on a psych drug cocktail from from January until the end of February.

A week after I went off of my cocktail, I started noticing my ears ringing when I would lay down.

Then suddenly one morning I woke up a few days later, and I felt this weird dizzy type of feeling where the painting on the wall looked like they were floating around and moving.

Ever since that day 9 months ago, I have been experiencing dizziness and vertigo.

I get a sensation as if the whole room is rocking either up and down or side to side when I walk. I get a feeling as if I am on a boat, and sometimes when I lay down or sit it even feels like there is an earthquake if the vertigo becomes intense. also everything always looks like they are moving side to side slightly, as if they are waving side to side slowly..

As far as I know, there is no cure for ototoxicity. Just be glad you are not experiencing dizziness and vertigo, because that will leave you disabled and will change your life forever.

But I definitely know how annoying Tinnitus is. I've had tinnitus since 2014, and it disappeared in 2016 and started again in March 2017 after stopping psychiatric drugs.

I thought it was just tinnitus coming back but unfortunately I developed a balance disorder and can only blame the psyche drugs for it because everything was fine before I took them.

Yesterday I tried fish oil and my tinnitus worsened in bed.  Is this likely coincidental and have you noticed that tinnitus usually ebbs and flows on its own?  It seems every substance I add to my body has an impact.

How are you doing?

I've had tinnitus since I stopped taking Lexapro in 2010. I have two separate tones. A medium pitch ringing in the top of my head and a hissing in my right ear. The ringing started first and is constant. The hissing comes and goes.

Either the volume has decreased, or I've got used to it. It gets worse at times, but mostly these days I hardly notice it. For me, one of the easier symptoms to deal with, but still annoying at times.

I'm not a doctor.  My comments are not medical advise. These are my opinions based on my own experience and what I've learned. Please discuss your situation with a medical practitioner who has knowledge of tapering and withdrawal...if you are lucky enough to find one.

My Introduction Thread

Full Drug and Withdrawal History

Brief Summary

Several SSRIs for 13 years starting 1997 (for mild to moderate partly situational anxiety) Xanax PRN ~ Various other drugs over the years for side effects

2 month 'taper' off Lexapro 2010

Short acute withdrawal, followed by 2 -3 months of improvement then delayed protracted withdrawal

DX ADHD followed by several years of stimulants and other drugs trying to manage increasing symptoms

Failed reinstatement of Lexapro and trial of Prozac (became suicidal)

May 2013 Found SA, learned about withdrawal, stopped taking drugs...healing begins.

Protracted withdrawal, with a very sensitized nervous system, slowly recovering as time passes

Supplements which have helped: Vitamin C, Magnesium, Taurine

Bad reactions: Many supplements but mostly fish oil and Vitamin D

June 2016 - Started daily juicing, mostly vegetables and lots of greens.

Aug 2016 - Oct 2016 Best window ever, felt almost completely recovered

Oct 2016 -Symptoms returned - bad days and less bad days.

April 2018 - No windows, but significant improvement, it feels like permanent full recovery is close.

Dear Petunia,

Can you remember when you started to feel some relief or when you started not noticing it?  I feel so desperate.  It has been non-stop since October, and I need some courage to keep on.

2001 - 2005 prozac,  2001 - 2017 various benzos, mainly diazapem and zanex,  2002 - 2017 olanzapine or seroquel,  2002 -2017 propanolol, 2005 - 2009 venlafaxine 75mg , forced to go cold turkey off venlafaxine as moved Thailand, doctor cut me off and couldn't get it there, severely ill for over 2 years, countered withdrawals with more zanex and seroquel

2014 returned to UK, mainly to get treatment getting off meds

doctor advised to taper seroquel over a few weeks, severely ill and bed bed-bound so reinstated it, 2015 tapered seroquel myself slower over a few months, was off it 2 months and was too ill so went on olanzapine, became zombie and too tired to get out of bed, went back on seroquel, very depressed so went back on venlafaxine, didnt work  so doctor swapped to zoloft became very agitated so back on venlafaxine

June 2016 - felt strong enough to begin tapering again, started what I thought was a slow taper of all meds,  2016 July Not had any alcoholic drink since this date,

2016 October completely off diazepem, 2017 Feb completely off seroquel, 2017 March completely off proponanlol, 2017 April (day before birthday) completely off venlafaxine, OFF ALL MEDS 11/4/2017, was fine for nearly 3 months and then delayed withdrawal hit,

supplements taking: turmeric capsules, NiaCel (nicotinamide riboside), Vit B12 sublingual, Vit B3, Vit B6, Vit B1, apple cider vinegar, manuka umf 10 honey, camu camu powder,  melatonin when needed, epsom salt baths, juices, smoothies,

I have head noise and tinnitus. The tinnitus comes and goes and mostly notice at night, but the head noise (hard to describe other than that) has been a pretty much constant companion throughout WD. Interestingly enough, it has really lessened in the last couple of weeks, almost imperceptible. I wake up in the morning and my head (brain) is quiet. First time in 16 months.

Hey RealMe,  the tinnitus still comes and goes. It seems worse when I'm tired or stressed I think. And it's honestly more of a head noise than ringing in the ear if that makes any sense at all. How are you doing?

Celexa 10 mg ( approx 5 years), reduced to 5mg (approx 10 years). Prescribed for anxiety and panic. Started tapering July 2015-2.5 mg for a month, then 2.5 every other day. Kept tapering until October when I took my last crumb.  Almost 4 years drug free and WD symptoms are evolving constantly. Some improved, some new.

Hi Mimi11,

Mine is still godawful, but sometimes worse than others.  Best in the morning.  Fortunately, I am able to sleep.  Mine is also a head noise although I find loud noises bother me as well.  I have some hearing loss in high frequencies, but the hearing aids make everything louder.  Has your tinnitus improved as you said in your post last year or has it gotten worse since then.  I believe it had been improving?  Thank you for getting back to me.  I can use any support you can give me from your experience.  Congratulations on being drug free for ten months.  That's wonderful, and I hope to be able to do the same at some point. :)

Tinnitus is my constant companion and has gotten worse this month with the flu! I've had a little bit of success with an essential oil blend I created but if I don't use it 3 times a day, it's stays loud and annoying! I sleep with noise from an app at night to distract myself from it. I've had two sets of ear tubes put in in the last eight years so some of it may be structural, but it's really hard to ignore!

So sorry you have tinnitus and the flu!  I have become phobic about getting the flu because it's taking all my nerves to cope with tinnitus and my other symptoms.  Lately I've been drinking 2 teaspoons of organic vinegar in a half glass of water three times a day.  I'll try anything but drugs!  What is the oil blend you use that helps?  I try to tell myself that it won't kill me and that I will learn to habituate to it, but so far it's a nightmare.

Hi RealMe!

I have quite a collection of oils that I use with success for different things so if I'm not too foggy, I research and try blends I find in my books or online. I found lavender, patchouli, and helichrysum recommended. The thing I'm not sure of is if part of my tinnitus may be due to fluid in my ears from being sick. I made a little blend of the oils and rub it on my earlobes about 3 times a day and it has helped a bit. I don't notice the ringing as much. I actually have had some ringing for a few years but it got really bad in January when I was sick and hadn't gotten better as I started to recover. It really is maddening!

I always think natural is better, also! I'm very distrustful of medication even though I'm still on some.

Do you use the organic apple cider vinegar like Bragg's? I have some in my cabinet but haven't started using it.

I hope you can find relief!
