I've been talking with another member about tolerability and how to handle the things that ADWD throws at us. Here are some of my thoughts on how I handled things during my taper.

The first several years were mainly getting through however I could. I still liked doing many of the things I was doing, but not outright joy. But for the most part it was pretty dark. I was the sole provider for the family so that was a big reason to keep going. Also, from the very start I had an inner understanding that this was just a temporary thing and would eventually sort itself out. Temporary is a relative term, the longer you live the longer a temporary thing can last. I figured it would take several years for things to straighten out. Once I really got going on the taper, I was able to get a feel for just how long it would take.

Once I got past poopout my baseline noticeably started to improve. That's when I came up with the term WDnormal. Because the way I normally felt now was an improvement over how I normally felt six months ago. WDnormal is actually a measure of change, not a designation of how one currently feels.

Once I pasted out of poopout, I started having short windows, I was able to start enjoying things around me and experiences. It was very subtle at first, but accelerated the lower I got in my taper. Yes, there were symptoms all the way to "0" and past, but they became progressively less and less of a struggle. It also followed the window and wave pattern. There were some pretty miserable times when the waves would hit, but they were always followed by marked improvement.

One thing I really tried to do was put myself in situations or have experiences that I knew I enjoyed, even if I didn't feel it at the time. I love dramatic cloud formations, so I would try to take moments throughout the day just to watch the clouds. I love flowers, so, I would try to stop and smell the roses whenever the chance came up. I love wildlife, so I made a point of watching the hawks, rabbits and squirrels around the yard. Even if I didn't feel it at the time, I know those things bring me joy, so I didn't give them up just because I felt terrible. Even in the bad times they would provide small flashes of good feelings, a sign of better times to come.

20 years on Paxil starting at 20mg and working up to 40mg. Sept 2011 started 10% every 6 weeks taper (2.5% every week for 4 weeks then hold for 2 additional weeks), currently at 7.9mg. Oct 2011 CTed 15oz vodka a night, to only drinking 2 beers most nights, totally sober Feb 2013.

Since I wrote this I have continued to decrease my dose by 10% every 6 weeks (2.5% every week for 4 weeks and then hold for an additional 2 weeks). I added in an extra 6 week hold when I hit 10mg to let things settle out even more. When I hit 3mgpw it became hard to split the drop into 4 parts so I switched to dropping 1mgpw (pill weight) every week for 3 weeks and then holding for another 3 weeks.  The 3 + 3 schedule turned out to be too harsh so I cut back to dropping 1mgpw every 4 weeks which is working better.

Final Dose 0.016mg.     Current dose 0.000mg 04-15-2017

Enjoy!!! ❤️

2020: After 18+ years (entire adult life) on Paxil, a dangerous doctor-led "taper" in 2015, and four years tapering off the last 1 mg thanks to SA and the Brassmonkey slide,

I AM COMPLETELY FREE OF PAXIL! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! Forever.

2021: Began conservative, proper, CNS-respecting taper of Zoloft, led by the only expert on me -- me. Making own liquid. 5-10% plus holds.

2022: Holding on Zoloft for now. Current dose 47 mg. Hanging in, hanging on. Severe protracted PAWS, windows and waves. While I may not be doing "a lot" by outside standards, things are graaaaadually getting better

Been back from India for a couple of weeks now. I will sum it up by saying it was "quite the adventure". We did get to see and photograph a number of tigers. I'll post some pictures when I get a chance. Physically it was a real challenge. The pace was relentless, Monica had a bad fall, that she is still recovering from, and my knee would not give me a break. Finally made it home and I came down with the worst case of bronchitis I have ever had. Two weeks in and I am just now starting to be able to breath properly without coughing. A few more weeks and I should be able to get around okay. But for now it's not move a lot and sleep the rest of the time.

Spent yesterday going to three different Urgent Cares and the ER/A&E. First UC was closed, second wouldn't take my insurance and the third said go to the ER. Eight yours a chest x-ray and CT with contrast later it was concluded that there really is nothing exotic wrong with me. I have a really bad cough, but there is no infection, no phenomena, no virus, no spots, nothing wrong with my lungs. So, I get a pile of pills and told to wait it out. Things do seem to be calming a bit, but I'm going to be down for the count for several more weeks it looks like.

I’m sorry you’ve been so very sick Brassmonkey, I hope you get plenty of rest and recover soon. Not much fun going to hospital and getting all those tests done. Glad to hear that the tests came out okay though.

Me and my big mouth. One forward three back. Woke up yesterday to a mild cough followed by a very sharp stabbing in my left side. Woke Monica with the tender words "hospital now" and off we went. More x-rays and CT scans, heavy pain meds and 11 hours later it was decided that I had torn a muscle in my stomach from the coughing. Today it is very sore but not stabbing at least. Got a pile of more pills to try and get the cough under control. We shall see how it goes. Right now I'm sleeping about 18 hours a day, but I think that is what is called for.

Things are starting to look up. The cough is still bad, but getting better and is allowing me to sleep fairy well. Still a good amount of pain from the torn muscles and bruising but that will settle with time. Got a doctor appointment next week so we can start to dig into it and figure out what is going on.

Haven't updated for a few days so I thought I would let people know I am holding even at best.

The coughing fits are on a downturn ATM getting worse and more frequent, and the stomach problems are getting worse.

Saw the doctor today. She was amazed at the extent of the bruising and the torn muscles. Getting a referral to a Pulmonologist and some heavy-duty meds. I've only taken two of the nebulizer treatments so far but am breathing a little easier. Going to try the new cough medicine soon and see how that works. Then tomorrow start with the anti-inflammatories.

As for the stomach problems, she thinks I picked up something in India. I'm on heavy antibiotics for that and will be getting some tests to try and figure out what it is. In the meantime, I don't stray too far from the bathroom.

That just leaves the sore and aching muscles from all the flexing to cough. Pretty much every inch of me hurts. To say I'm really tired of the whole thing is an understatement, but I'm stuck in this body, so I have to make the best of it. It is reminding me a lot of when I got sick after our trip to China several years ago, at least that didn't have the stomach problems, but I didn't breathe right for quite a long time. But then again, we didn't seek out any treatment and it wasn't quite this bad.

Internet has been down for a week so I haven't been able to update.

Still quite sick. Can't speak more than a few words without setting off a coughing fit. Off to the doctor in a few minutes to see if they can shed any light on it.

Just wanted to let people know I'm still very out of sorts. Haven't had a horrible coughing fit for a couple of days but have had some pretty bad ones. Can't walk across the room without setting things off with the huffing and puffing and have to be really careful not to trigger a fit. I just got authorization for a battery of tests, now have to make the appointments. I'm seeing my NP tomorrow for a follow up and my PCP the next day. Things are very slowly improving, but at an ADs taper speed.

@brassmonkey Thank you for the update.  Glad to hear there is some healing in progress but sorry it is so slow.  Praying the tests will reveal what the doctors need to know to get the treatment you need.  Hugs.

  1. .025 Xanax 3 x daily  Start date 10-13-2013 through 8-13-2014.  Started tapering 6-2014 to 8-2014.  Some small discomfort. 25 mg Zoloft - Start date 5-1-2014.  50mg. 6-2014.  through 7-14-2014 .  Started tapering  7-14-2014, stopped tapering 10-2014.  I did 1/4 of the dose a month.  small discomfort.  These next 3 were prescribed when I made some seriously bad choices with my thyroid medication.  Was in ER twice for possible heart attack.  INTENSE anxiety, panic, fear.   Lost 30 pounds in 2 weeks.  Thyroid levels bounced to extremes for 8 months. Dr. prescribed Zoloft 50mg  9-2105.  After 2 doses had a bad reaction passed out in my bedroom. Also prescribed Xanax .025  at the same time. 3 times daily, 4 if needed.  Was only on it about 2 weeks.  Was not working.  Trip ER they gave me an Ativan IV and it worked and lasted.  switched to Ativan. 9-24-2016. 1.5 mg Ativan - .5 mg  three x daily -start date 9/24/16.  Attempted taper start 12-16-2016. Was shaving Pills and alternating tapering AM, PM and midday dose weekly.  Buspar .5mg  -2.5mg. am and 2. 5mg. pm start date 9-26-2016 .  Lexapro .10mg  start date  - 10-26-2016. Found SA and began 10/14/2017 tapering .001 by weight of pill  every 4 days Held longer if there were was WD.    Was very sensitive to Ativan. 3-15-2018 Off midday dose - 7-16-2018 Off PM dose - OFF ATIVAN! 11-17-2018 10 mg. Lexapro. PM - 5 mg start date 10/11/2016 increased to 10 mg 2/2/17. 1-1-2019 Began tapering Lexapro.  .001 gm every 4 days.  Held longer if there was WD.  Last doses some I held a month.  OFF LEXAPRO! 2-21 2021 5 mg. Not much to report, I'm still out of commission. Just over four months now. There has been some improvement, but I'm still having coughing fits frequently throughout the day. Tons of tests from several doctors, all of which tell me what I don't have. The real frustration thing is waiting for results. It takes several weeks to get the approval, several more weeks to get the test and then another months to get the results. I don't even get to see the Ear, Nose and Throat guy for an initial consultation until October. Winge, complain, whine.
