The endgame taper method is different for members weighing powder simply because of the difficulty in getting such small doses accurately.  When you are using liquid you can dilute it and still make 10% reductions.  With powder they might have to do 25%, then 50% reductions.

From what/how you are posting you are giving me the impression that you are trying to find "excuses" to jump off as quickly as possible.  It's up to you what you do/how you do it, but I would encourage you to be careful because it is worth it.  Because I went so cautiously I am more certain that any issues that show up now are more likely caused by other things, and not WD.  And if it is WD then it is what it is, and I know I did my best.

Do you have to tell the doctor exactly where you are at in your taper?  Can't you just say that you are nearly off but just need one more prescription?

If it was me, I would be making the effort to get the prescription so that I was able to get off the way I needed/wanted to, not according to convenience.

Thanks Chessie, I've read the new Endgame taper thread. I'm sorry, I didn't see your message on the 8th.

According to the Endgame taper thread, I could probably have stopped a year ago at 1.25mg, which was 2.5% of 50mg - my original prescribed dose, or possibly a year before that, because my "full dose" ended up being 100mg, and 2.5% of that is 2.5mg. I'm currently on 0.1mg, so either 0.2% or 0.1% depending on which figure I take.

The doctor has noted each exact dose as he gives me each prescription - and I don't recall what dose I was on last time. Those seven tablets (I checked) would actually last quite a long while as I only make up a batch every month or so - since I'm taking such a small amount I don't get anywhere close to running out and I'm just discarding when I think the current batch is getting to be too old. I want to save at least one tablet for a "rescue dose" for future if needed, so I guess that gives me six months of easy materials to hand.

My plan for the last 0.1mg was to take ten weekly drops of 0.01 each (0.09, 0.08 etc). It's very similar to your last 0.1mg though I see that you added 2 more weeks onto the end, halving and halving again the last couple of doses. I could add two more weeks though I'd need to be very careful about my dilution to be sure I can get those last tiny drops - will have to break out my spreadsheet again.

Ah yes, but think of the alternative.

Consider your symptoms - have they been bearable for most of that 8 years and you have been able to continue to live your life fairly normally during most of that time?

The alternative - there is a possibility that you could have been suffering unbearably during some/most/all of that 8 years.

And you are almost there.  It's now just over 6 months since I stopped completely and even though I am still active on SA, my tapering is just fading into the distance.  And I do not have any regrets about taking 6 years to get off Pristiq.  I do have some regrets but I remind myself that I did what I thought was best for myself at that time with the knowledge and information I had .  And I also know that I cannot change what I did or what happened in the past and can only try to do the best I can going forward.

Hi again Chessie. Do you think you went too fast for your last 0.1mg? It sounds like you think it was too fast and I should take longer than you did?

I have had a few days of 0.09mg. It's a bit awkward with the existing syringe - those little ticks on the syringe are very tiny. I've made up a new batch today at my usual 1:1 dilution, and which I will further dilute once it's had a chance to properly dissolve/distribute through the suspension fluid - it's clumped on the bottom of the bottle at the moment. That's common and it takes 1-2 days to be useable. I just shake it several times a day as I go.

For this new dilution I will take 5ml (5mg) of my new 1:1 batch and add 45ml of Ora Plus (or probably 20ml of Ora Plus and 25ml of water). That will give me a batch that is 5mg:50ml, or 0.1:1, so I will then be drawing up 0.9ml to get a 0.09mg dose. With this dilution I can easily go to 0.01mg, and probably more roughly to about 0.005mg - less than that and the dose won't come out of the syringe.

No noticeable effects with the drop but it's absolutely miniscule. Realistically I haven't had anything I could pin on withdrawal for a long time, and probably not since before I got below the jump off point (from the endgame taper thread). I'll hold this for a few more days until the new bottle with the greater dilution is ready, and drop to 0.08mg.

Down 99.91% since highest dose.

Wow, I'm excited for you.  It seems like such a tiny amount but we know better!  And I think we should be, and we probably are, very thankful that we do know better.

Carefully does it!  Please don't rush it, for example if there is any extra stress in you life, TOM (if relevant) etc.

Remind yourself of how far you have come.

I'm at 0.01mg as of yesterday. After a week (on Wednesdsay) I'll switch to going down by 0.001mg increments daily using a different dilution of my home made suspension, and then I'll be done. While it would be possible to dilute further and continue the taper, I don't think there is any point dragging this incredibly long taper out any further. I have missed a bunch of doses here and there in the last few months without ill effect, so I assume that my current tiny dose (currently 0.01mg, or 0.01% of my highest dose) is so negliglible that my brain ignores it.

Anyway, it's been a long slog over many years and I look forward to three or so more weeks when I will be off. I have continued improved mental health since I got past the point in my taper where the side effects from the SSRI bothered me. My teeth will never be the same, sadly.

I don't want to get too cocky, as I have always said I wasn't off until I was off for a year. That said, per the Endgame Taper thread I could probably have stopped a year ago, so perhaps I can start to feel more confident.

I will update again once I'm officially off.

2005 St John's Wort / 2006-2012 Lexapro 20mg, 2 failed attempts to stop, tapered over 4.5 months in early 2012

July 2014 Sertraline dropped from 100mg to 75mg, held for six months, slower tapering until 2019 22 Dec 3.2mg

2020 Sertraline 19 Jan 3.1mg, 26 Jan 3.0mg; 1 Mar 2.9, 7 Mar 2.8, May (some drops here) 24 May 2.5, May 29 2.4, June 21 2.3, June 28 2.2mg,  July 4 2.1mg, July 24 (or maybe a bit before) 2mg, early Nov switched to home made suspension; 29 Nov 1.8mg; approx 25 Dec 1.6mg)

2021 Some time in about Jan/Feb realised probably on more like 1.8mg and poss mixing error in making suspension; doses after 10 Feb accurate; 10 Feb 1.6mg; 7 Mar 1.4, continued monthly

10% drops until 1mg, then dropped 0.1mg monthly.

  • 3 weeks later...

I've just had what I expect to be my last dose, 0.001mg. (Evening of Sunday, 28 August.) My highest point was 100mg, and it's taken many years to get here. I've mostly got here unscathed though.

Once I got down to 0.1mg, I further diluted the suspension, and spent 10 weeks going down by 0.01 increments at weekly intervals. Then I further diluted that and took daily drops of 0.001mg until today, which was 0.001mg. Tomorrow will be nil.

I should say that I've missed more than a few doses over the last several months, with no noticeable effects. Unthinkable a few years ago, but hopefully it indicates that the drug no longer has its claws into me.

I've also been a bit bad about my thyroid meds recently - I keep forgetting - so far with no consequences but now that the ssri is done I will prioritise the thyroid.

The endgame taper thread suggests I could have stopped a year ago. If I'd known that I probably would have, or at least would have done the last bit faster. However, I didn't know then and by the time I did it was only a few months ago, and hopefully this has given me an even softer landing. I was able to do the extra year with existing supplies (except some measuring syringes) so it was negligible cost to continue, just time.

The waiting sort of starts now. We've all seen lots of people crashing after a few months, so I've always had a year after finishing as an end point. Though I've never heard of anyone tapering over as many years as me, and hopefully that extra year at the end means I'm more or less already there. Time will tell, but I've done all I can.

It's odd to think what lengths I've had to go to to safely discontinue a legal drug. I had to ignore opinions and advice from my own doctor, pharmacist and psychologist. I've spent a small fortune getting doses compounded, and I've ground up tablets and made my own suspension.

So, today feels a bit of an anticlimax, but I can't see much point continuing to

further dilute and prolong this more, so I'm done.

Enough rambling. I've repeated myself a bit here from recent posts, but I wanted a bit of a wrap up to this stage of my life, so if you've got this far, thank you.

Thank you also to mods and other members who have supported me over the last eight years.

Final (I hope) summary - dose tomorrow, 30 August 2022 - 0mg, down 100% from 100mg.

Onward and upward.

Best wishes, B

Congratulations, @bubbles - what an amazing accomplishment!  It sounds like it will only be smooth sailing from here on....but without any sertraline.  :)  You are an inspiration. Wishing you all the best - WR.

-1/06 - 3/07 Cymbalta. Fast taper (essentially CT); withdrawal symptoms after 4 mos (didn't realize was WD)

-10/07: 100 mg Zoloft; 1 mg Klonopin - tapered off Klonopin after 4 mos. Several unsuccessful slow tapers of Zoloft; went up and down in dose a lot

-Spring 2013 back on 1 mg Klonopin to counter WD symptoms; switched over 5-6 mos from Zoloft to 35 mg citalopram
-Two attempts at slow tapering citalopram, always increased dose due to WD; also increased Klonopin to 1.25 mg in 2014, then to 1.5 mg in 2015

-8/17-9/17: After holding one year at 20 mg, feeling withdrawal symptoms due to stress - slowly increased to 25 mg. No change in symptoms after 6 months (? tolerance ?)  - decided to start citalopram taper February 2018 (still on Klonopin 1.5 mg).

Supplements: fish oil; magnesium; vitamin D3; curcumin

Citalopram taper:  2/2018 - 12/2019: 25 mg - 11.03 mg I 2020: 10.89 mg - 7.9 mg I 2021: 7.8 mg - 5.26 mg I 2022: 5.2 mg - 3.36 mg I 2023: 3.3 mg - 1.47 mg 2024: 1/5/24: 1.44 mg; 1/19/24: 1.40 mg; 1/26/24: 1.37 mg; 2/2/24: 1.34 mg; 2/9/24: 1.31 mg; 2/23/24: 1.28 mg; 3/1/24: 1.25 mg; 3/8/24: 1.22 mg; 3/15/24: 1.19 mg

So, today feels a bit of an anticlimax

That's how I felt too.  It wasn't until later on that the realisation hit that I had actually done it.  Now, 9.5 months later, it feels like it was all a dream.

And in saying that, it just adds weight to what I have said to members that some people join SA, get the information they need, taper carefully, get off their drug with little problem and go on to live their life and tapering and drug issues are in the past which is why we don't hear from them again.  And I expect that there are many similar people who either don't join the site or join but never post.

@bubbles Congratulations.  This is wonderful. And yes in a sense it might feel sort of anticlimactic, but not on this site.  Here it is time for the brass band and a huge parade.

You went so slowly and gave yourself that soft landing, so you might not have any problems whatsoever.

Just think, when you wake up tomorrow and you no longer have to worry about taking the Sertraline how free you will feel. I am so very happy for you.
