How long does it take to completely recover from risperdal consta?

I switched from risperdal consta to latuda end december 2017 but I must still be affected by it, since I'm still impotent (I got this condition while on risperdal consta).

Risperdal 3 mg 2014-2015

Abilify 10 mg 2015-2017

Hello, Griqua, and welcome to SA.

There is no definite answer to your question about how long it takes to recover from taking psychiatric drugs.  It varies from person to person.  For some it make be a matter of a few months, for others longer.  Regarding your impotence, also known as PSSD, this is a common withdrawal effects\.  Again, there is no set answer as to how long to recover from this, although generally with time you will recover.  Time is the greatest healer in going off psychiatric drugs.

To give members the best information, we ask them to summarize their medication history in a signature -- drugs, doses, dates, and discontinuations & reinstatements, in the last 12-24 months particularly.  Here is the link to create a signature.

It seems to me that withdrawal from risperdal consta takes longer than withdrawal from risperdal oral. Is that correct?

Also sometimes, I find it hard to go on waiting for my libido to return. Psychologically I mean. How do you cope with that?

Hi Griqua,

We might be able to be more helpful if you put a bit more detail in your signature. Are you still taking Latuda? What doses? How did you switch over?

When did this symptom start? Was it while you were taking Risperdal consta, or after you stopped taking it?

I'm not a doctor.  My comments are not medical advise. These are my opinions based on my own experience and what I've learned. Please discuss your situation with a medical practitioner who has knowledge of tapering and withdrawal...if you are lucky enough to find one.

My Introduction Thread

Full Drug and Withdrawal History

Brief Summary

Several SSRIs for 13 years starting 1997 (for mild to moderate partly situational anxiety) Xanax PRN ~ Various other drugs over the years for side effects

2 month 'taper' off Lexapro 2010

Short acute withdrawal, followed by 2 -3 months of improvement then delayed protracted withdrawal

DX ADHD followed by several years of stimulants and other drugs trying to manage increasing symptoms

Failed reinstatement of Lexapro and trial of Prozac (became suicidal)

May 2013 Found SA, learned about withdrawal, stopped taking drugs...healing begins.

Protracted withdrawal, with a very sensitized nervous system, slowly recovering as time passes

Supplements which have helped: Vitamin C, Magnesium, Taurine

Bad reactions: Many supplements but mostly fish oil and Vitamin D

June 2016 - Started daily juicing, mostly vegetables and lots of greens.

Aug 2016 - Oct 2016 Best window ever, felt almost completely recovered

Oct 2016 -Symptoms returned - bad days and less bad days.

April 2018 - No windows, but significant improvement, it feels like permanent full recovery is close.

It started while I was on Risperdal consta. I had lost my libido on abilify then went off abilify and after 11/2 year, I got my libido back. But so did my psychosis. So I was hospitalized back in september 2017 and put on 3 mg risperdal then consta 14 days injections I think 37 mg on three occations. On 20th of december I switched to latuda 18 mg and then upped to 37 mg.  I've been on that latuda dose since. I don't think I can do without meds and latuda is not as sedative as risperdal.

Hello, Griqua.

Sexual dysfunction is a common side effect of antipsychotics, including Latuda. If you lower your dosage to the lowest dose effective for controlling your symptoms, the side effect of sexual dysfunction may diminish as well.

However, going on and off drugs confuses your nervous system more and it may take a long time for it to settle down. How are you feeling on Latuda, how much are you taking, and at what time of day?

When you went off RIsperdal Consta, what were the symptoms that caused you to take Latuda?

This is not medical advice. Discuss any decisions about your medical care with a knowledgeable medical practitioner.

Hello Altostrata thank you very much for posting a comment

I am at the lowest possible dose of latuda at 37 mg. I take just before bed with a bowel of rice (usually). I feel okay. It is definitely much more pleasant than risperdal, abilify or risperdal consta (three 37,5 mg injections). I went off risperdal consta because of the impotence problems but after 7 months I haven't recovered yet. I have also paid an expensive private psychiatrist to look into it and he says it can't be latuda but that the risperdal consta might have effected some brain cells. But I don't know.

I've been on risperdal before, lost my potence and recovered in 6 months time. I after I recovered from impotence from abilify, I got my psychosis back and I' thought that I'd go back to risperdal because I knew I could recover. Only this time, they gave me injections instead of pills and I feel it's a completely different drug. Then latuda was introduced to the country I live in and I went straight to that and I'm fairly positive feel less sedated not suicidal. Only I want my libido back.

I would also like to ask what sort of signs should I be looking for and whether risperdal consta takes longer to leave the body than risperdal oral?

Thank you so much for posting!

I am sorry I wish we could tell you when you will get your feelings back, but everyone is different.  You could still be experiencing some withdrawal from riperidol, it doesn't matter how long it takes to leave the body, what is important is that it changes the way the brain works and when the drug is taken away the brain has to adjust to the change to a different drug. You seem to be doing quite well which is good, except for the libido, You have recovered before which is a good sign. Have you thought about very slowly reducing your dose to 18.5? Doctors do not accepot that such a low dose can be helpful but many people find very low dose of a drug can be just as effective but the dose HAS to be reduced slowly.

We don't have a topic for tapering latuda, but we have one that explains how to make a liquid from tablets or capsules.

https://www.survivingantidepressants.org/index.php?/topic/2693-how-to-make-a-liquid-from-tablets-or-capsules/

With your history I would recommend Brassmonkey's sliding scale method

How long could such an adjustment take? I don't think my psychiatrist will accept a lower dose, unfortunately. I am also still dependent on coffee to keep me going.

I had to keep collecting prescriptions for 37.5 of effexor because my doctor said I couldn't have a lower dose. I had to do my own taper. It is the same with the drug I am tapering now. My doctor can't give me a lower dose so I collect the prescriptions for 50mg and make a liquid from the powder.   We have to be very inventive with our tapering!

hi Vaseadude,

I withdrew from Risperdal. Lots of it. A whole 11mg!!

it's a drug not to be trifled with. You need to go REALLY slowly, just like with antidepressants and with benzos. It's best to not make an additional cut until your body has recovered from the last one if that is at all possible...and if you have any history with psychosis or delusional thinking it's even more important to take it really uber slow.

that said, it's very possible to do...

the general rule of 10% cuts of total current dose...that is taught here for ADs works quite well...sometimes it makes sense to do smaller cuts.

I got liquid risperdal which made it easier.

when I got down to the really tiny doses I diluted the liquid with distilled water (carefully measured) so as to make even smaller cuts possible.

good luck!

Well sort of. I was on risperdal consta and lost my libido and energy. So I switched to latuda which shouldn't have these properties. But it feels like the risperidone is still there and I'm still impotent and groggy have difficulty waking up in the morning. I'd like to work and have family but as I get older that dream doesn't seem to materialize.

so you tapered off the risperdal in 2017 but started taking latuda this year?

when did you start the latuda?

what made you decide to take that?

you can have a good life, but it takes time for the effect of these drugs to get out of your system and for your brain to go back to how it was before you took them.

if you are still taking a drug, I don't know how that factors into things

most of these drugs were never truly proven to be effective; they mostly just dull our feelings or sometimes make us feel more energetic but they all come with lots of side effects

hi Griqua

I was on a lot of different drugs from the age of 18 to just recently

I am now 62

I am almost fully recovered. I don't take any drugs at all, not even an aspirin

It can take a long time, but it does happen, you can recover. It's frustrating because we want to feel well NOW

try to find things to distract yourself while your body and your brain is healing.

unfortunately, time is what your brain needs.

if you don't mind my asking, how old are you?

I don't really have a choice not to take medications (I can be forcibly hospitalized if I don't) and frankly I don't think I can do without them.

I took latuda from the 20th of december 2017 so it's been 7 and 1/2 months. Before that I was on risperdal consta which I my experience has a different side effects profile than oral. I was told that latuda was the newest with the least side effects.

Risperdal 3 mg 2014-2015

Abilify 10 mg 2015-2017

Risperdal consta 37,5 mg 2017

Latuda 37 mg 2018

How long will what take?

Latuda is a different drug but it also has typical anti-psychotic side effects, which could be maintaining your grogginess and sexual dysfunction.

As mammaP said last month, reducing the Latuda dosage is the only avenue for reducing the side effects. You need to tell your psychiatrist you cannot function at all at this current dosage and need to reduce it. However, if you are in "the system" for psychotic symptoms, you need to be careful not reduce to so low a dosage that those symptoms emerge.

This is not medical advice. Discuss any decisions about your medical care with a knowledgeable medical practitioner.
