jozeff: trying to come off of citalopram - a little help would be great

Haha, that's a good one!

We met in therapy! We literally had hundreds of hours of therapy together and separately. Things went pretty well a few years back but after my citalopram started messing me up it declined here and there. Sex life went to zero (despite the fact that we have a baby😘), I feel numb and joyless most of the time. There is the problem. That messes up my marriage. We haven't had sex in over a year now. How can that be healthy. We barely touch each other. We can talk pretty well together that's for sure but fysically it is almost zero.

We both have a major libido problem. She uses Zoloft for Christ's sake.

As long as we both have no sex drive thing go along but the intimacy is important to feel healthy mentally.

Thanks for your advice anyways!

1Hi guys,

My wife and I made up and we're back on track. I love her so much and don't want to lose her.

We've had lots of bumps in the past mostly because of my alcohol addiction, I got fired a few times and had to spend a year at home.... horrible times.

Now my life seems ok except for this awful WD. I don't know if it is WD in the first place but let's assume it is.

Today I reached 15 mg citalopram. Let's stay there for a couple of weeks and see how that goes. Haven't been that low in 1.5 year. I jumped from 15 to 25 and back a few times in the past and didn't feel any difference back then!!

Placebo effect now I know it can hurt me ....who knows???

Cheers

Jozeff

Hi!!

Thanks for your interest!

I'm doing not too great but not too bad either.

I'm not very active here lately. I have a 6 month old boy and keeps me awake some nights. I just tapered slowly and did the best I could.

I'm currently @ 13.5 mg citalopram. Started tapering 27th April @18 mg

So I'm going not very fast but I'm managing. I just don't dare to go faster.

I haven't been feeling really good for months now. This could be because of my taper, I don't know. Sometimes I hold for 10 days or so but try to microtaper every day.

My wife  and I have had some issues mainly due to sleep deprivation.

The years of tapering ahead don't sound very attractive but hey, I have little choice.

How are you doing India???

Cheers

Jozeff

@jozeff Amazing news. With so many struggles previously and you needing to updose and a new baby,  this is incredible! You should be proud of yourself.

It’s definitely because of your taper and the stresses of lack of sleep. It’s important to acknowledge  your achievements, like tapering at all and going to work everyday and parenting two children .

I am keen to follow your taper news so if you do get a chance to post but i understand if you don’t have time . I dropped 1% and I think it’s time I started a microtaper..I am torn.

Keep going Jozeff- you’ve come so far.

Hi guys,

Still holding at 13.5 mg citalopram. Have been on this dose for 3 weeks now. I started feeling very off and decided to stop tapering for a couple of weeks.

After 1.5 week hold I started feeling better. Mood was better, little anxiety etc. However after 2.5 week hold I started feeling very low and dreadful. Low energy, very tired and a "I want to try but can't" feeling. This has been like this for 5 days now.....is this a wave?

I've had some rough times in my marriage, we have a 6 month old and I sold the house where I live the first 25 years of my life and where my father died a couple of years ago.

These are stressful situations. I was doing pretty good but it feels like everything is too much now suddenly. I'm having a cold also and that doesn't help either.

Anxiety is not cool, depression is not cool bit this constant dreadful feeling that this will never be ok.....that's the hardest part.

Hope you are all doing well!!

Cheers

Jozeff

Ok a quick question for the mods....

The longer I hold my taper the more miserable I start feeling.

Could it be that a gradual taper is better for you then tapering and then hold. I mean does your body get used to constantly decreasing dosage of medication? That tapering breaks that rhythm and that your system reacts in a negative way to a hold by overcompensating or something?

I use a daily microtaper btw.

If I remember correctly there was a member here who had the same issue a few months ago (Nick?).

Any thought would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks and cheers

I've really never encountered this or seen any discussion of this possibility..  Holds are what we recommend to allow the central nervous system to catch up with decreasing doses.

From your signature it looks like you're tapering around 10% per month.  If you're feeling bad, the reason might be that you need to slow down.

Hi gridley,

Thanks. No I am not tapering 10 % per month. Only 5% per month because I wanted to try that first.

I'm a bit disappointed that such a slow taper still causes a lot of trouble. I have the feeling that my body has had enough of this stuff but I can't just quit because of wd symptoms.

I'd like to try to taper a bit faster but that might make things worse.....can't find my taper speed. So frustrating.

Thanks again

Jozeff

I really empathize with you, Jozeff.  I am in the same boat where I think my body is just done with this drug (and causing all sorts of symptoms) but am having to taper very slowly so as not to upset the existing symptoms and withdrawal effects.  It is a super frustrating place to be.  We will get there though slowly but surely.

-1/06 - 3/07 Cymbalta. Fast taper (essentially CT); withdrawal symptoms after 4 mos (didn't realize was WD)

-10/07: 100 mg Zoloft; 1 mg Klonopin - tapered off Klonopin after 4 mos. Several unsuccessful slow tapers of Zoloft; went up and down in dose a lot

-Spring 2013 back on 1 mg Klonopin to counter WD symptoms; switched over 5-6 mos from Zoloft to 35 mg citalopram
-Two attempts at slow tapering citalopram, always increased dose due to WD; also increased Klonopin to 1.25 mg in 2014, then to 1.5 mg in 2015

-8/17-9/17: After holding one year at 20 mg, feeling withdrawal symptoms due to stress - slowly increased to 25 mg. No change in symptoms after 6 months (? tolerance ?)  - decided to start citalopram taper February 2018 (still on Klonopin 1.5 mg).

Supplements: fish oil; magnesium; vitamin D3; curcumin

Citalopram taper:  2/2018 - 12/2019: 25 mg - 11.03 mg I 2020: 10.89 mg - 7.9 mg I 2021: 7.8 mg - 5.26 mg I 2022: 5.2 mg - 3.36 mg I 2023: 3.3 mg - 1.47 mg 2024: 1/5/24: 1.44 mg; 1/19/24: 1.40 mg; 1/26/24: 1.37 mg; 2/2/24: 1.34 mg; 2/9/24: 1.31 mg; 2/23/24: 1.28 mg; 3/1/24: 1.25 mg; 3/8/24: 1.22 mg; 3/15/24: 1.19 mg

Hi wantrelief!

Thanks for your encouragement!

I studied your taper schedule a bit. You also dropped 5 % monthly on average.

I've been in this terrible wave for a week now. Lot of ruminating, nausea, neck shoulder pain, suicidal ideation, dark depression...

I called in sick from work this week. Lot of time at home to think and worry....

My thoughts are killing me, what if this never stops. I don't know what to do and I am just sitting on the couch waiting for this to pass.... Not good. I'm pretty afraid to go outside because I'm so sensitive to the outside world right now.

I bring my kids to school and feel exhausted afterwards.  My eldest talks about soccer all day and that's exhausting too 😉

My wife is tired from work and taking care of our 6 month old boy.

I guess I'll hold s few weeks and see how that goes.

The years of tapering ahead seem like mount Everest to me now...

Cheers

Jozeff

Jozeff, I’m sorry you’re struggling at the moment , but I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. You just need to stop tapering for a while . I still firmly believe that you started to taper too early on after your crash and your nervous system did not have enough time to regather it’s strength. Even with these further tiny or small drops, it accumulates, and a your CNS is just getting swamped. Give it time , be patient. I think if you had waited a good few extra months before resuming tapering , the process may have been a lot easier on your system . I’d consider holding for a good while bring . Take care , Nick .

Started Citalopram in 2005 (aged 15) for apparent "OCD" - 60mg

July 2015 attempted 2 x 10% + cuts 4 weeks apart. WD symptoms intense at times. Need to slow down.

November 2016 - Resumed taper. 1.25 - 1.5% decrease weekly approx.

44.5mg November 2016. Jan 2017 42.5 mg. March 2017 40 mg. June 2017 37mg. September 2018 22mg. Nov 2018 Holding at 22mg to stabilise from moderate wave. January 2020 - Holding, mostly feeling fine, but still having some waves at times.

February 2020 - Resumed taper , 1.5% reduction weekly/every two weeks.

Thanks wantrelief, India, Nick and gridley!!

Not too active on the forums lately. I've had some reasonably good weeks and then thing just flow a bit. Good days, bad days and in between.

I've been having the flu since yesterday morning and I feel absolutely awful. Earlier when I had fever and the flu I was just tired, a bit relaxed due to fever and just watched TV. Now, while in citalopram taper I feel horrible.

Nausea, dark thoughts, forehead is like I'm dying, anxious etc.

Does anyone recognize a ramp up in symptoms while having the flu?

Never felt too bad while sick, just sick and isolated but now it's like a whole new level of misery..

Thanks for your thoughts guys!!!

You're the best!

Cheers

Jozeff

Thanks Leo!

A little update...

Have had the flu this entire week so far.

sunday night I didn't  know if the fluids were going up or down and spiraled into a major panic attack which lasted until next morning.... absolutely awful. Next day I was all tingling of misery and felt low the rest of the day.

The days after this were not too good either.

This flu and fever ramps us things...unbelievable. Started questioning life and felt very anxious and low. Used quite some benzodiazepines to get some sleep. Careful with those things I know.

Wonder why this fever ramps up symptoms and cranks up the depression so much.. What could be the reason for this??

thanks and have a nice day

cheers

O yes. My entire family had a a virus. They all followed the same patern but after 10 days every person would be fine.

Not me. The flu finished but the wave of depression, letargy and fatigue lasted 2 more weeks.

Sorry to hear it hit you so hard. I’m more the opposite in that with a cold of something my wd symptoms get lower while dealing with it. Guess we are all different but our bodies are so sensitive it doesn’t take much to upset it.

Hope your back on track soon.

Thanks tom and persistente,

I've been ill for 8 days in a row now. Started with diarreah for 5 straight days. Was someone better for 2 days but since yesterday I'm unbelievably miserable.

Have been having extreme flu like symptoms the last couple of days but no fever! Very strange phenomenon, feeling like 40c fever but thermometer says normal body temperature. Never ever had this in my life.

This evening I started to develop real fever and felt absolutely horrendous. Heart palpitations, nausea, complete panick, just wanted to crawl out of my skin and end all this.... I'm laying on the couch and I'm too lazy now to jump out of the window to hurt myself but this feeling has got to end( fortunately my house is way too low to do this....).

Question for the mods or people who also had this:

Can a diarreah have impact on the absorbtion of (in this case) citalopram?  I mean, I have had to run to the toilet for 5 days in a row (no vomiting) and a few days later (currently..) I have massive wd and extremely low mood and severe anxiety

I always felt pretty ok when having a fever but this is awful. I read a lot about medicine already being absorbed before reaching the toilet but is that true for these meds??

Thanks for any insight/nice words!!

Jozeff

Jozeff,

Sorry that you’re finding yourself in this predicament, I recently had stomach flu and it was a very rough ride for a few days.

It can take a few hours for Citalopram to be absorbed orally, so there is some chance of diarrhoea impacting absorption. My understanding from studies is that drug absorption is less impacted by acute diarrhea than chronic diarrhea, but there is certainly always a chance of absorbing less than usual during a severe bout of diarrhea.

I didn’t personally notice an uptick in withdrawal symptoms during my stomach flu or after, and I take Escitalopram orally. However, I may have just been lucky there, especially as on day 1 and 2 I was also vomiting.

Being unwell itself can trigger waves in a lot of members and I generally hold dosages extra long after being unwell, as it can sometimes trigger additional waves for me too. It might well be the case that being unwell is the main cause of the symptoms and any issues with absorption are very much secondary. In either case, sadly there is little I can recommend for absorption other than to get better as soon as you can.

Rest will of course be beneficial. I took time off work and laid in bed mostly for a whole two days (if I’m honest I was too sick to leave bed unless for the toilet next door). Some find probiotics to be helpful during a stomach bug, but you might want to be cautious around making changes given all the symptoms you currently have.

Please rest and I hope you feel better soon.

Thanks eymen,

Appreciate your help!

I don't  know about the absorption either but I actually hoped that 10 people would say: that's it! Always looking for some assurance.

Diarrhea is a nasty thing nevertheless so it might impact other processes in the body that ramp up symptoms.

The most prominent symptom right now is depression. I have been laying on the couch for 8 days in a row with little things to do other than watch tv and YouTube.

I'm having a little bit of a fever at the moment so I'll just have to wait and tough it out I guess. It is hard to stop ruminating about life in general and all the trouble I am in.

I have a 8 year old boy and a 7 month old baby boy who keeps me awake once or twice a night. This is not too helpful with my symptoms. Just waking up every time when you are in deep sleep.

My work is currently not too excited, we have little work in the winter and a lot of people looking for something to do... I feel much better when it is a bit more busy.

My body and mind need distraction and movement. As soon as I start thinking negative things I feel depression creeping up on me and my heart rate goes up. I feel the relaxation fade away and misery enter my body. If I woul be able to structure this a bit more that would be awesome. Have been in psychological  therapy on and off since 1999 so I doubt it that i'll ever learn how to do that.

I also start questioning my marriage and my health. I hardly remember how it was to just feel nothing, not worry about mind and anxiety. Those days seem forever gone. I'm turning 44 and I have been an alcoholic for 8 years or so (almost 6 years sober now).

I really hoped that giving up the booze would rejuvenate me but that's not how it worked unfortunately. It kicked me into despair and depression. At first I felt really good about what i'd achieved but after a few months I started getting unbelievably agitated. My wife couldn't  stand it anymore and we almost broke up twice. I move to a holiday resort for 6 weeks to heal and let my marriage get some air. Desperately I went to GP for ssri to help me with agitation (I couldn't bare my sons foot steps sometime, incredibly over sensitive). He gave me Effexor which I had taken before for 5 years but this time it didnt help me. So I switched to citalopram and the rest is history.

Some days I think about those problem free nights with the table filled with beer cans laughing at me. But I don't want to give my almost 6 year sobriety away. I am the only person I've met (??) who never ever relapsed within this time span. Not one single drip of alcohol after quiting cold turkey. Besides, my wife will leave me if I drink and I don't  wanna loose my family. We are doing good financially together and giving that up would make things a lot worse.

Major question: how do I stop ruminating about how bad I feel?

This is really important to me because all my misery starts with a thought. I wake up completely relaxed most of the times but when the thoughts jump into my head it all starts going downhill. This has always been a problem for me but while on Citalopram it feels like its so much harder to ban those negative thoughts. I cannot cry on that stuff which released a lot of tension in the past for me. Sometimes my head explodes with emotions and feel like major crying spell but I just can't....then depression builds up in my forehead and stays there for hours.

Some days I feel like my tapering is way too slow and that this is all crazy. My wife thinks I am  completely taking it too seriously and perhaps it would be better to just ditch the citalopram and see what happens. She once quit effexor just jumping of dose and never looked back (I know of more people who did this but I just would not forgive myself if I did and made things a lot worse).

The way I am tapering right now is approximately 1 % per week which is very, very slow and takes 10 years or so to complete. Everyone I know thinks that is completely ridiculous which in fact it is. The 10 % method however would be better and is way faster. I have been on these meds for 3 years and I would find it more then reasonable to taper for 3 years but no longer. This should be doable theoretically.

My problem with my tapering is that I managed to go from 18 mg citalopram in april 2019 to 13.15 mg as of december 2019 which doesnt sound too bad. However, according to my calculation this would mean a receptor occupancy reduction from 80 % to 75 % !!

My brain shouldn't  be able to notice this change over a 7 month period. I mean, this is like a 6 or 7 % recept. occup. How bad will my travel from 75 % to zero be if I already feel awful sometimes??

It could also be that I am still healing from my too fast a taper in may 2018 ( from 25 to 16.5 mg citalopram) But then again....that was also maybe 5% receptor occupancy difference.

I started my current tapering the day after my son was born and that was not the best idea perhaps. I must start a taper sooner or later however so I just began. I take notes and drop like 0.15% every day which is very careful. When I feel things slipping away I hold for a couple of days and maximum 14 days or so. This could by no means too fast a taper, could it? I would like to take it down to 5 mg quicker and from there take it very very slow. I see a lot of people here who do a great taper until reaching like 5 mg or so and then run into trouble. With my current taper I will reach 5 mg in 2 years from now which (concerning the receptor occupancy story) seems ridiculous.

SAD advices to taper no more than 1 medicine at a time and no faster then 10% per month. This means that people in their 50's and using 4 or 5 different meds (like my family members...) will be tapering the rest of their lives.....

Not trying to criticize any suggestions done by the mods or this website in general. Just thinking a lot about recovery a lot lately. Writing this actually helped calm me down and might have prevented a paic attack!!

have a nice day you all

cheers

Jozeff

Do you ever question if you did not take SSRIs for the alcohol wd if you would have recovered?

Is the medication the issue? or the alcohol.

Hi Leo,

(Do you ever question if you did not take SSRIs for the alcohol wd if you would have recovered?)

What do you mean exactly? That the alcohol may have damaged my brain so much and that medication is only making it worse?

I should have tried other things like healthy food, 5htp, gaba, keto-diet..etc... I started taking ssri to make it easier. The easy way so to speak but it did not work out like i hoped it would.

The first year of citalopram use was amazing. Lot of energy and felt pretty good except for no sexdrive. After jumping up and down in dose and fast tapering I crashed like a mad man and still have not recovered from that.

One day I hope to be pure and med free. Occasional benzo if things go out of hand but nothing else, just healthy food, rest, exercise..

Did you quit drinking or are you going to Leo?

cheers

Jozeff

Jozeff,

There were many elements to your post above that I could touch on.

Any infection can ramp up the production of inflammatory cytokines and can cause ‘sickness behaviour’. This is well documented and is part of the reason those who are unwell tend to rest. It’s perfectly natural, but especially in those who are prone to it or more sensitive, it can also ramp up anxiety and hopelessness etc.

Alcohol withdrawal is incredibly tough and you’ve done well to stay sober so long. My grandad was an alcoholic and he had no such luck. Although SSRI’s have their own issues, for most of the drugs I don’t think their detriment to overall physical health and functioning compares to alcohol (unless we talk adverse reactions or withdrawal).

Alcohol withdrawal is recognised and documented, probably more so in the mainstream than antidepressants at this moment in time. Agitation is a typical withdrawal symptom; as is anxiety, low mood, insomnia etc. It sounds like you struggled to find a new baseline following alcohol withdrawal and Citalopram worked to aid you through this process for some time. As I alluded to above, there’s nothing inherently wrong with that and I’m sure most would agree that’s a reasonable trade-off.

I would strongly recommend the practice of mindfulness. You can’t stop all thoughts and emotions, but you learn to observe them, to detach from them, to accept them and ultimately to love them. It’s a wonderful practice that can serve to improve your life and well-being in the long term, but in the short term it can be hard and sometimes frustrating. Once you become more skilled at watching thoughts and accepting them, rumination tends to reduce somewhat as the cycle tends to repeat itself less when you stop adding fuel to the fire by getting wound up and resisting.

It’s true, you still have some way to go with your taper and it may take many more months and indeed years, but you can feel better long before that, so long as you practice self-care and don’t rush your taper. I think sometimes we become over invested in reaching zero, as that’s when we expect the ‘real’ healing to begin. However, we can see lots of healing along the way by becoming more accepting, learning more about ourselves and how we relate to others, and creating healthy habits for our lives after these drugs.

I’m sure you will feel better as the stomach bug begins to lift. Take plenty rest and try to be kind to yourself.

Hi Jozeff

How long were you off alcohol before you went to Gp for SSRIs?

Were you drinking alot and how long for?

I have just been a social drinker with some binge drinking for almost 10 years. Not everyday or mornings just a heavy drinker when i drink. I want to stop it for good but i cant work out if its stopping alcohol that makes me feel **** or its the wd from SSRIs. Tricky 1.

@eymen23 do you think people recover from Alcohol wd, the same as meds?.

Hi eymen and leo!

Thanks very much for your responses. Greatly appreciated.

Well leo, I've been an alcoholic voor 8 years. I drank daily, didn't miss a day..... Usually I drank about 4 liters of beer each day. I've never been much of a liquor guy, just beer and lots of it.

I used to drink while on venlafaxine years ago and never had a problem with it.

Quitting drinking is hard but I found it mostly physically very rough. Tired, brain fog, fever like feeling. But, you start to feel a bit better after a few weeks. Your liver has to recover a lot. I had enormous sugar cravings and ate like 300 grams of m&m daily....I got addicted to sugar instead.

After a few months the mental issue started popping up. What if I can't relax, what if I panic? Earlier, after 2 beers all worries were absolutely gone. I listened music, watched TV and fell asleep with a big smile.

I quit the booze cold turkey, it's extremely hard to taper alcohol believe me. Its nearly impossible to not take that 11th glass of beer because you are tapering. After 10 glasses you just don't give a sh**

Went to aa meetings and never ever met anyone who tapered alcohol although it would probably be better for your body.

How many days do you NOT drink in a row? This is important because you should be careful not to get a delirium which could be life threatening.

It is always wise to talk about it with your doctor. Alcohol wd is much better understood then ssri wd.

To be honest I find citalopram impact much worse then alcohol wd.

You are in wd and drinking a lot may be very unpredictable to your brain and nervous system.

If you are not an alcoholic u would try to decrease the amount of alcohol over time. Buy less, party less etc.. if you don't buy it and you manage to have a couple of drinks and it's bedtime already it is much easier to drink less than if your fridge is stuffed with ice cold beers......

I was about three or 4  months of alcohol before going to the doctor. I used refusal the first 6 weeks to resist me from taking alcohol in the first place. That stuff is great, didn't notice anything at all (if you drink while using it you become violently sick however....).

Good luck you all and thanks again for your support.

Jozeff

sorry for the small posts.

I have times in the past before wd i would stop alcohol and be fine.

My father drank for years and now drinkb1 day a week he was fine.

I became very unwell stopoing meds and i now think when i have drink free days and my symptoms increase that its due to alcohol. The wd muddies the waters. The symptoms are just the same with or without alcohol. Just alcohol makes the wd symptoms easier.

Mybwife drinks the same and when she stops she is fine. But im in wd so i blame it on stopping drink. maybe just my anxiety and been in wd

Im lost since all this **** started

Hi Leo,

Yes, alcohol takes the edge of things. I know, I felt reasonably ok when I drank very much. Only tired but alcohol can even give you energy at those moments. Of course it's not the real you. When I didn't drink I felt empty anxious and low.

Giving up drinking was hard but mentally the citalopram road has been much harder. You don't get the buzzing feeling from it, only misery....

If you can drink only 1 or 2 a day. It could be working but binging here and there makes it worse.

Check out bignoknow on YouTube. He has some very interesting stuff about his alcohol abuse. Very informative.

Cheers

Jozeff

Little update:

Have had a fever for 3 weeks and went to the doctor. My hb is a little low. The rest of blood work was ok. My crp (protein) was a little high also.

I've been going to work again since 10 days but I have been in a bad shape for 4.5 weeks now. Terrible sleep sometimes because my 8 month old baby is awake lately.

I've had a major panick attack in the beginning of December 2019  and my fever started there. Never felt ok again since that day.

I'm in a terrible wave now for 4 weeks and that's hard. I held my citalopram at 13.13 mg for 3 weeks and started my taper again a week ago. I came down to 12.75 mg at the moment.

Don't know if that ramps up symptoms? From 13.13 to 12.75 is not that much of a decrease I'd say. It isn't even in the dangerous receptor occupancy range so I doubt that my body is reacting to that.....

I must say that I still drink 6 or 7 cups of (weak) coffee a day and almost a bottle (1.5 liter) of diet Coke each evening. It could be that caffeine is too stimulating for me. I always feel great after my first cup of coffee. I never tried to skip a day because I get terrible headaches then.

Have been reading a lot about caffeine/depression link  and aspartame negative influence on our brain.

Maybe it's time to ditch a few addictive things slowly.

I have the feeling that caffeine gives me terrible dread in the afternoon. Could that be? Around noon I start feeling awful lately. Try to eat less carbs but nothing seems to help.,

What do you guys think about caffeine and aspartame??

Have a nice evening and happy 2020!!

Jozeff

Hi Jozeff, I skimmed through the beginning and end of your thread today to get to know you a bit. It's nice to meet a fellow lab person. 🙂

I know you know this but I am going to say it anyway: you really need to get off the caffeine and aspartame. Now.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17684524

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/30318075

I don't think you need citations about caffeine, its effects on the HPA axis are pretty well understood.

Withdrawal compounded by the use of stimulating substances and sleep deprivation due to a new baby-- it's no wonder you're crashing. It's very important to take very good care of your body and nervous system while you're in withdrawal. This is not something that willpower or toughness will help you with.

I know it's incredibly frustrating not to have the life you would like to have. But believe me, after losing 20 years of my life, and being disabled and sick with constant withdrawal and drug changes throughout my daughters' childhoods, I would give anything to be able to go back and do withdrawal and tapering properly--and very slowly--during that time. My children lost their mother during the most important years of their life. I was suicidal, on multiple meds and frequent changes of meds and dosages, barely getting by. If I had been even a little bit more functional it would have been so much better for them.

Take this process seriously. Approach it as you would the greatest challenge in your life (which it may be). Do everything that you can to take care of your body well. It's going to be a long journey, but it will not always be as difficult as it is today. Be a hero--not the silly kind of hero jumping off cliffs, but the truly deep kind of hero, reaching as deep as you can into your strength and character, to surrender to the kind of patience and self-care and vulnerability that is necessary to get through this process, no matter how long it takes. You can do it.

My heart goes out to you and your family. Hang in there.

Started on Prozac and Xanax in 1992 for PTSD after an assault. One drug led to more, the usual story. Got sicker and sicker, but believed I needed the drugs for my "underlying disease". Long story...lost everything. Life savings, home, physical and mental health, relationships, friendships, ability to work, everything. Amitryptiline, Prozac, bupropion, buspirone, flurazepam, diazepam, alprazolam, Paxil, citalopram, lamotrigine, gabapentin...probably more I've forgotten.

Started multidrug taper in Feb 2010.  Doing a very slow microtaper, down to low doses now and feeling SO much better, getting my old personality and my brain back! Able to work full time, have a full social life, and cope with stress better than ever. Not perfect, but much better. After 23 lost years. Big Pharma has a lot to answer for. And "medicine for profit" is just not a great idea.

I'm not a doctor. Any advice I give is just my civilian opinion.

Hi Jozeff, thanks for your good wishes on my thread, thought I'd drop by. I see you're grappling with Citalopram, yep, I know that struggle quite well. Still in WD from it, switched to Venlafaxine in August. I see you and I did a kind of reverse switch from one to the other.

With regards to the caffeine, I'm reducing the amount of tea I drink. Couldn't possibly drink coffee any more, it would send me through the roof in WD.....I think it's good to cut it out, same with sugar (apart from naturally occurring in fruit) and also artificial sweeteners. Just give your brain and body the best possible chance to heal, for yourself and for your family, agree with Rhiannon above.

Sending good wishes your way :) for a happy and healthy new year.

January 2008 to April 2015 Citalopram 20mg to 5mg, reducing in 50 per cent leaps. Jumped off at 5mg

Wow Rhiannon and Sunny,

Thanks so much for dropping by!

Yes citalopram is magical stuff. I don't even know if it is the citalopram thats causing all the problems. It must be because I felt horrible since 6 months after taking it and never felt normal since...

I know I should stop drinking so much diet coke and coffee. It just makes me feel calm and im looking forward to drinking it every day.

The diet coke is awesome after work,  I love that stuff. It is extremely acidic, takes away lots of trace minerals, contains very dubious chemicals but it tastes so good....

Have been off of the soft drinks for a few months and didnt notice much difference. However, it could be that I'm sensitive to some additives now while tapering. Who knows.....

Looking for answers and reading a lot about many things. Sometimes we just have to wait and stop looking for answers.

thanks again!!

Jozeff
