How to be helpful

Recommended Posts

Hello. A really close friend of mine is withdrawing from Paxil. I want to be a good supporter but don't know exactly how to be. What are ways I can help her? If anyone who is currently withdrawing, what would good support look like to you? Any input is greatly appreciated.

Hello and thanks for being such a good support for your friend. It truly is priceless and possibly life-saving.

Here is an excellent thread on just that: https://www.survivingantidepressants.org/topic/8979-helping-family-understand/

Petunia's post about halfway down is particularly helpful.

One of the biggest way you can be of support is to believe them and validate their experiences. It is very likely that their doctor won't acknowledge withdrawal and that very few others will try to understand the way it sounds like you are. It can be a truly deeply alienating experience. I know I'm repeating myself, but I want to reiterate just how very important it is that you're seeking to understand and support your friend through this.

Please also encourage your friend to start an intro thread here -- that could be very helpful to them.
