☼ Leo1983: SSRI withdrawal

Leo1983

Thanks.

My sleep is fine 7 hours per night.

Morning waking is hard work, with anxiety. Then during the day it's mainly lethargy, low mood and some anxiety. Anhedonia.

Hi risk? I get it prolongs recovery but what do you mean high risk. After been on 20mg of Escitalopram for 12 weeks, then CT I reinstated after 12 weeks off back onto 5mg for 3 month. I still felt no improvement so tapered off 5mg over 2 weeks.

I also quit alcohol at the same time. After 12 years of the usual social drinking.

Thanks

Lee

Hi.

Does anyone know is it common to try say 3 different  Ssris and CT and be totally fine. Then try another 1 and be left with all these symptoms? Or WD should I say.

Just wonder if it's common. I tried a few and stopped I was fine. Then after the next couple I have been left with all the symptoms.

Hope your all healing.

That's not dementia. Please don't scare yourself by calling your symptoms by dire-sounding psychiatric diagnoses.

You have garden-variety withdrawal syndrome from going on and off drugs many times. Good sleep is a good sign for recovery.

Thanks Alto.

I'm just crapping myself full stop. I accept what it is. I just feel sorry for myself and all the other people who are like this. Just not on.

I think I'm annoyed at myself for using them as a performance drug. I did have anxiety however now I have a whole host of problems.

Thanks again.

Hi.

Can someone please answer this question for me to shut me up.

I started trying medication because of work stress. I thought it was guna make me this confident ass hole. I tried 3 meds and each time I stopped I had not many issues.

However the work never stopped and the anxiety from that continued. So after a awful day at work I cam in and started to loose sleep, get anxious and this went on for a week. So back to the doctors. Mirtazapine 15mg. Awful for 2 weeks. Stopped CT. Felt awful. Then onto Escitalopram for 12 weeks. Then basically just a nightmare on the medication and then now all this memory cognitive off balance anxiety awful thoughts etc.

My question is.  i was anxious and not sleeping before this happened. The meds did nothing but made my situation worse. Then I stopped them and now I'm a chemical basket case. However I still say to myself I was bad before the tablets. Do I need medication. Or is it my withdrawal brain. I have a new job and everything now. However I have these symptoms which prevent me from assessing how better my life is now.

If someone can put my mind at rest with this I think it will help me.

Thanks

Lee

HI Leo

I already wrote to you a message for the questions you were asking. I believe you will be well. Just try not to let your ruminative brain deceive you. During my WD there were moments where i would put to question everything that i was doing, same as you now. But i started to notice an interesting pattern. I would get terrified from a problem, i would spend the whole day thinking that it was the end of the world and i would get really anxious for that. After a good night sleep, the next day, or after 2 days the problem would not terrify me any more. There i realized that the problem was not my mind, my thinking or me.... the problem was WD related. So i started building up on these simple facts and push forward on the bad days. Learn to do that... Accept the rumination for the moment and do not let it deceive you.

You will be good with time.... but you have to accept the fact that this time will have to pass first. Take a diary and write down your symptoms of the first week of the month every day... than write the symptoms of the first week fo the next month... and do the comparison on the third month... I never did this myself 🙂 but i know that in your case it could be worth it.

All the best

Thanks so much.

I just worry what is the withdrawal and what is the original anxiety I went to the docs for in the 1st place.

Although I never had all these symptoms before going to the doctors. It was my job made me unwell at the time.

I guess I worry I'm waiting to heal when really I have a problem.

Hi Leo,

I think it is common to have the concerns you are expressing, that we really have a problem and it is not withdrawal related. But this:

1 minute ago, Leo1983 said:

seems to be proof that what you are experiencing is withdrawal.

Hang in there.

-1/06 - 3/07 Cymbalta. Fast taper (essentially CT); withdrawal symptoms after 4 mos (didn't realize was WD)

-10/07: 100 mg Zoloft; 1 mg Klonopin - tapered off Klonopin after 4 mos. Several unsuccessful slow tapers of Zoloft; went up and down in dose a lot

-Spring 2013 back on 1 mg Klonopin to counter WD symptoms; switched over 5-6 mos from Zoloft to 35 mg citalopram
-Two attempts at slow tapering citalopram, always increased dose due to WD; also increased Klonopin to 1.25 mg in 2014, then to 1.5 mg in 2015

-8/17-9/17: After holding one year at 20 mg, feeling withdrawal symptoms due to stress - slowly increased to 25 mg. No change in symptoms after 6 months (? tolerance ?)  - decided to start citalopram taper February 2018 (still on Klonopin 1.5 mg).

Supplements: fish oil; magnesium; vitamin D3; curcumin

Citalopram taper:  2/2018 - 12/2019: 25 mg - 11.03 mg I 2020: 10.89 mg - 7.9 mg I 2021: 7.8 mg - 5.26 mg I 2022: 5.2 mg - 3.36 mg I 2023: 3.3 mg - 1.47 mg 2024: 1/5/24: 1.44 mg; 1/19/24: 1.40 mg; 1/26/24: 1.37 mg; 2/2/24: 1.34 mg; 2/9/24: 1.31 mg; 2/23/24: 1.28 mg; 3/1/24: 1.25 mg; 3/8/24: 1.22 mg; 3/15/24: 1.19 mg

Hi all.

Went to see a CPN tonight. I took all my evidence with me from S.A. and the news.

I discussed my situation and withdrawal. I explained I have been drugged for months for no reason.

She completely agrees with me and said I can only say I don't think the DRUGS were given to harm you but I can see how you would be in trouble off the DRUGS.

I told her it could take years to feel my old self. I said at least 6 - 18 months. She was amazed.

We talked about mental health rates in the UK rising and the fact that mental health is rising. She was very interested.

She said I'm the first to attend with this information. However she stated that she does see a lot of patients who complain of the physical symptoms I have however there treat as a physical issues and not withdrawal from medications. Then they deal with the mental health issues. Basically the medication is never blamed.

So hopefully she has learnt a lesson today.

There is an error in my paragraph.

We discussed the rise in prescriptions for antidepressants in the UK. I then pointed out the rise in mental health issues. I said is there a link? She was interested.

Exactly how my GP treated me when I went to her with the physical symptoms of withdrawal. I showed her my rashes and just gave me some meds for it, and told me to start taking my antidepressants again. I'm like no thank you.

Something has changed this last week.

I still have DP, Anxiety, Anhedonia and low mood.

But my energy levels have lowered. I'm getting tired in the afternoon like for a snooze. Then at night I'm ready for bed at 9pm. I'm sleeping until 7pm.

Is there a pattern or a sign?

Basically- you have a building where the MAJOR steel structures are trying to be rebuilt at different times - ALL while people are coming and going in the building and attempting to work.

It would be like if the World Trade Center Towers hadn't completely fallen - but had crumbled inside in different places.. Imagine if you were trying to rebuild the tower - WHILE people were coming and going and trying to work in the building!  You'd have to set up a temporary elevator - but when you needed to fix part of that area, you'd have to tear down that elevator and set up a temporary elevator somewhere else. And so on. You'd have to build, work around, then tear down, then build again, then work around, then build... ALL while people are coming and going, ALL while the furniture is being replaced, ALL while the walls are getting repainted... ALL while life is going on INSIDE the building. No doubt it would be chaotic. That is EXACTLY what is happening with windows and waves.  The windows are where the body has "got it right" for a day or so - but then the building shifts and the brain works on something else - and it's chaos again while another temporary pathway is set up to reroute function until repairs are made.

A beta blocker is not simple.

My experience with beta blockers was that - when the drug wore off, the symptoms returned 5-fold.

That doesn't sound like a "simple" answer - it sounds like chasing the tail of akathisia - or any other symptom.

Additionally, beta blocker has a side effect of depression.  I seem to recall that was why I went on the cursed drugs in the first place.

Time is the best solution.  Time, and learning to "surf the symptoms" - observing, being curious, but not engaging with them.

Been to see my Go this morning.

" said it's no wonder the state your in you have been seen my numerous doctors and given way to many pills."

He then said I'm going to help you today and I'm going to start by putting a ban on antidressants on the screen. So when your seen by other Drs they will know not to prescribe. How else can I help he says...... He said I want you to come to the practice once a week and speak with the CPN until your out of this withdrawal. He said nothing more is going to happen. He said you will heal. However my concern is what impact has this withdrawal having on your future thoughts.

He said these DRUGS help few people. However the people they do help it's worth it. He said you are in the majority, they don't suite or have very little benefit and when you stop them all hell breaks loose. However there is nothing more I can do for you until it passes.

Suppose it was better than " Your a nutter and you need the pills".

Angers me so much still that they can do this and pretty much say oops sorry about that.

I have read Brass monkeys essay.

I did mail him about it.

However he mentions various ways people have been drugged and tapered and Ct'd.

He states however the people who have been on meds a few weeks from the GP and then tried on many different meds is another story. What does he mean this is another story?

Morning.

Hope everyone's doing as well as can be.

I was wondering if anyone could answer my question this morning.

1. What is garden variety withdrawal.

2. I have asked what it means in Brass monkeys essay? He states there are the people who have been put on drugs for weeks at a time and then changed a lot of times. He finishes with " This is a different story". I'm one of them people so would like to know the meaning.

Thanks.

I just used google and typed in:  what does garden variety mean - of the usual or ordinary type; commonplace.

There is a variation to this theme and that is the ones who have taken the drug for a month or two.  They didn’t have the immediate Adverse Reaction, but the drug is not treating them well and they decide to stop taking it because of the way it makes them feel. Because they have only been on the drug for a short time and with their doctor’s encouragement they stop the drug cold turkey. After a “honeymoon period” this throws them into withdrawal and a whole carousel of doctor’s visits and new drugs typically follows. But that’s a different topic.

this is my situation. It's a different topic? Anyone?

You are worrying too much.  You have felt improvement, you are healing.  You may feel worse at times.  It is going to take time.  Continuing to research is only going to stress you and slow the healing process.

I know I'm worrying and I think that maybe because my life is upside down.

I think my worry about this topic is it has been mentioned in the essay however no explanation left. I'm worrying is there something special about the people who ended up on a carousel of drugs after stopping them after 2-3 months. Or are they the same as others.

Thanks for your time.
