Ripley66: weaning off Seroquel / quetiapine

Recommended Posts

Ripley66

Hello. I had severe postpartum depression which started at 8 weeks postpartum in December 2017. It was endogenous and melancholic...lots of agitation and anxiety, pacing around, taking on psychotic features. I was put on Seroquel XR 100 mg and 50 mg on seroquel IR both in the evening.

Ive managed to come down on the IR by going down 12.5 mg every 2 weeks. I waa fine but once I got to zero (just using the 100 mg XR and no IR) I was hit with nausea, throwing up, loss of energy and anxiety. Also horrendous diarrhea. This feels like the flu its unbearable.

What do I do now?

How can I wean slowly off the remaining XR when they only come in 50 mg tabs and you cant break them?

Scared :(

Hi Ripley66, welcome to SA.  I am sorry for the delay in welcoming you, staff are volunteers and a few are away right now.

Sadly you tapered the IR too fast and are suffering withdrawal. Withdrawal happens when doses are reduced faster that the brain can adjust between cuts.

How were you feeling before you started seroquel? You had a lot of drugs and changes before seroquel, and in a short space of time. You reacted to all of them in some way which tells us that you are very sensitive.  I feel for you going through all this with a baby to look after.  (((hugs)))

You could get some relief by going back up by 12.5 and see how you get along.  It could be enough to help with the withdrawal. It will take a few days to reach a steady level in your blood and hopefully you will start to feel better soon.

When you are stable you can then start a slow taper.   It is possible to taper the XR,  and we have a topic on tapering seroquel which explains how to do it. If you have any questions you can ask them here.  Thank you so much for doing your signature, it is very helpful.

About updosing or reinstating to stabilise.

You will likely have some windows and waves while you are stabilising, this explains them.

Many people find fish oil and magnesium helpful, they are the only supplements we actively recommend.

I am very sensitive to meds, yes.

I was feeling great before I dropped the final 12.5 mg of IR. I thought that was a small amount to taper but based on the withdrawal I was wrong. Why do I see so many coming down by 25 and 50 mg no problem?

I was on 175 and made it to 150 by sometimes going down by 6.25 and sometimes by 12.5. I had no problems until the IR was dropped to zero...Im still on 100 xr.

My withdrawal didn't start until several days after the last drop...about 4 days. Is this normal?

I went back to 112.5 2 nights ago then up again to 137.5 last night out of desperation because of how sick I am

Mainly its nausea. No appetite.

Even going back to to my dose for three nights the withdrawal is still here and even worse than before.

Will this go away soon since Im back to the higher dose?

. It is common for withdrawal to take a few days to appear.  Sometimes the body can't tolerate the same dose as previously and reacts when the dose is increased. Is it any better, worse or just the same since updosing? It takes a few days to get a steady level in the blood so you need to hold the dose for now. If you are feeling worse after updosing it means the new dose is too high. Everyone is different and some can taper faster than others. Some quit cold turkey and are fine in a short time but others can v]be very sick with withdrawal. It becomes more difficult after several; drug changes, the body starts to react to changes.

After 15 hours of agony my nausea is finally settling down.

Thank you so much for your replies...I am so wary of doctors after what they put me through.

I went from 100 back to 112.5...two days later there was no improvement so my GP suggested to go to 150 tonight just to calm my nausea down because this drug is an anti nauseant randomly as well. Should I remain at 112.5 or 137.5 or do as he says and go to my original dose from 4 months ago?

I guess it does depend on how I feel when I increase the dose. The increases and decreases are so tiny Im using pill splitters I just cannot believe how sick that one drop of 12.5 mg made me. This drug scares me now I feel like I will never be able to get off 😓😓😓

I would hold and see how you get on, it is good that you are starting to feel better,  you say after 15 hours of agony, when did it get so severe?

well agony being that sick sick sick motion nausea and gut crunching feeling like you have to use the loo. And when my stomach is bad my mind is bad. Stomach trouble always heightens my anxiety ten fold. And the headaches...

Honestly this is why I am so confused...the timing of it all is strange.

Ill write it out more clearly what I did.

I was tapering slowly from the 50 mg IR..still taking 100 XR but not touching that.

I made it to 12.5 mg of IR going down by 6.25 every 2 weeks. It was pretty ok.

Then I reached my last 12.5 mg.

Last Wednesday: only took 100 mg XR. No IR

Thursday: burning in intestines...bad bathroom distress but nothing more.

Friday and Saturday: slight nausea. Nothing severe.

Sunday and Monday: anxiety increase...slight depression. Nausea starts

Tuesday and Wednesday. Extreme nausea. Horrendous sick flu feeling.

Went back to 112.5 on Tuesday hoping to alleviate symptoms.

Thursday no relief...so that night took 137.5 mg.

Friday...Even worse extreme nausea after feeling well all day. Insomnia. Nausea lasted 15 hours. Increased anxiety. Went away suddenly. Mild headache.

What is happening to me?

I thought a bit more seroquel would equate to less nausea but I had more nausea when I went back up by 12.5 mg after those few days off.

It could be that the increase to 137.5mg triggered an adverse reaction and wore off a bit the next day, Friday. Or is it possible you had the flu?

I did not have nausea or withdrawal tapering from 150-112.5 because I went slow. When I went from 112.5-100 all hell broke loose.

Could be a flu but my kids and husband are not sick so its unlikely.

I also had some anxious racing thoughts. Perhaps 100 mg is a threshold and my illness is relapsing? I was sick just 4 months ago.

I think the slightest decrease in dosage can cause a nausea to come back I've noticed that myself how long have you been tapering I'm right there with you with the nausea it's not fun I have to go to work everyday like that it's strange up because it fades in the evening so I'm getting hope that it's going away

there's there's a medication called promethazine 25 mg that will help the nausea it's an antihistamine be careful taking Zofran it has interactions with SSRI and other medications

when I when I get the nausea also get waves of anxiety not too bad but enough to throw me off a little bit I'm finding out the exercising and eating rights helping me a lot I'm still having pretty bad days though

Do you take promethazine? Is there an interaction?

How long have you had it since reinstating the 100? Did it go away when you went back to 100 or when you dropped again to 50?

you you have to go on drugs.com and cross-reference which drugs are taking to see if there's an interaction with promethazine I'm taking Zoloft so there's a mild one and it has to do with heart rate but I haven't felt anything yet the promethazine is helping the nausea but I only take as needed I don't take regular I will wait until the nausea get so bad and then I'll take it and it seems to take away the nausea. Since I reinstated 100 mg I've had ups and downs mostly Downs I did have an 8-day window just recently now I'm going to hold steady on 50 mg of the Seroquel and see if I can get a balance again working seems to help me out most of my symptoms go away while I'm at work be a probably because I'm forgetting about them

How were you sick 4 months ago?

If you were vomiting, you may have thrown up your Seroquel dose. This could upset your nervous system.

What is your daily symptom pattern? Please keep daily notes on paper about your symptoms, when you take your drugs, and their dosages.

I had a rough morning but it eased up. I just feel very tired now...like the feeling you get the day after you recover from the flu. Very bizarre. Im drinking lots of ginger tea and taking it easy on my stomach. I find Gavisgon really helps.

Does anyone know if you can take CBD oil while you are on Seroquel? I took that prior to this mess for nausea unrelated to all of this, and for anxiety.

Exercise makes my heart beat very fast and I get anxiety but I am on my feet all day because I just had a baby 8 months ago and a 5 year old boy. My husband also leaves to sea (Coast Guard) every other month so Im on my own with two children going through this rollercoaster :( TheThe only things keeping me sane are CBT thought work...ginger tea and funny youtube videos.

I am getting a big nausea break today. I am praying it stays away!!!

The nausea really messes up my day because I have to go to work with it and my anxiety gets worse because I keep thinking that the withdrawal symptoms are going to get worse and worse until I vomit
