Thanks Chess Cat. I like the visual of waiting in line, and doing it calmly and patiently.  I'm working on that.  I'm going to go lay under a weighted blanket and relax for a while.

I seem to be stuck in a pattern of having a difficult time falling asleep at night.  I'm actually feeling pretty good during the day, but then when I go to bed, I just toss and turn for 2-3 hours before finally falling asleep.  I'm wondering if my amino acids are the problem.  I've been taking them every night for years.  I take 1 capsule each of 5-HTP, L-Theanine, and GABA about 1-2 hours before going to bed.  I also take Natural Calm magnesium, Estroven (for hot flashes) and 5 mg melatonin. See my sig for the strengths.

My question is:  should I go off some, or all of them?  And if so, which ones?

No. I'd been drinking 2-3 cups decaf coffee per day.  I've completely avoided caffeine today, to see if that helps.  Decaf coffee still has some caffeine in it.

We don't recommend 5htp.  Some members have reported good results, others bad.   Anything that messes with neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine can be risky.  We have a topic about 5-HTP here:  5-HTP (5-hydroxy-tryptophan) and l-tryptophan

5mg Melatonin is a very high dose for someone in withdrawal and can have a paradoxical effect which alone might explain your sleep problem.  I took 3mg once and was up all night; 1mg works pretty well for me.  You could taper down the melatonin by a milligram a night to get to a lower dose that works.

Thank you for the information, Gridley. I'll take your advice on the melatonin.  Can I just quit the 5-htp cold turkey or should I wean off of it?

The main reason we recommend that our members don't take 5-HTP is because it essentially is an SSRI in the way it interacts with the body.  This means that it is not a good idea to stop taking it CT.  It would be best to follow a proper 10% taper to get off of it with the least amount of WD symptoms.  The same holds true for the L- Theanine, while the GABA works like a benzo and needs tapered in that manner.

20 years on Paxil starting at 20mg and working up to 40mg. Sept 2011 started 10% every 6 weeks taper (2.5% every week for 4 weeks then hold for 2 additional weeks), currently at 7.9mg. Oct 2011 CTed 15oz vodka a night, to only drinking 2 beers most nights, totally sober Feb 2013.

Since I wrote this I have continued to decrease my dose by 10% every 6 weeks (2.5% every week for 4 weeks and then hold for an additional 2 weeks). I added in an extra 6 week hold when I hit 10mg to let things settle out even more. When I hit 3mgpw it became hard to split the drop into 4 parts so I switched to dropping 1mgpw (pill weight) every week for 3 weeks and then holding for another 3 weeks.  The 3 + 3 schedule turned out to be too harsh so I cut back to dropping 1mgpw every 4 weeks which is working better.

Current dose 0.000mg 04-15-2017

Oh no.  I did not know that these supplements worked like drugs.  I'm dismayed.

What should I do?  Should I finish tapering off the Lexapro, then taper off these supplements?  Or should I taper off the 5-htp and hold my current dose of Lexapro?  Please advise, thank you.

Thank you for warning me about Lexapro, and the importance of weaning off it extremely slowly at the end.  I will definitely heed everyone's advice to go very gradually off of this.  I'm learning to be supremely patient, which isn't easy, as I'm a naturally impatient person.

It helps to remember how far you have come.  Also remembering that it has nothing to do with how strong or determined you are as a person, it's the brain that needs the drug.

I have to say that I am very grateful for an improvement in myself that I just noticed today.  I've been miserable for about 3 weeks with insomnia, although my other symptoms have been improving gradually.  Today, I listened to a 1 hour news program about politics in the world.  For the almost 17 years I was on this antidepressant, I was not able to cognitively follow any type of news show with any complexity relating to politics.  Today, in spite of being tired, I was able to follow and make sense of this news show.  I am deeply grateful that my cognitive ability to understand things is improving.  This is very encouraging to me, to say the least.  I wanted to post this to encourage others in this forum who are struggling with WD as so many of us are.  It helps to be aware of the positive changes that are happening, even when we are feeling very uncomfortable with other W/D symptoms.

Well I just made a 10% reduction in my dose.  From 0.3 ml to 0.27 ml.  I've been feeling pretty stable for the past couple of weeks.  I do want to get completely off this lexapro eventually, but I was very tempted to just stay parked on 03. for a few months, because I got so tired of feeling bad.  But, I made a significantly smaller drop in the dose this time, than I did last time, plus there were some major stressors going on that I seem to have (somewhat) resolved.

Since my last taper 3 weeks ago, I have thrown out my knee and ended up in the ER, and then my elderly mother got very sick and I had to take her to the ER the other day.  Not to mention dealing with a teen son who is stressed about choosing a college for next year.  It looks like I'm going to hold for a while, until all this stress resolves itself.  I may be on this med for a while yet, and that is OK.  At least I'm over 97% off of it.  I hope the doctor understands.

I was feeling really good yesterday, and then I got hit by a wave last night.

I was slammed by night sweats at first.  Then, after about 2 hours of sleep, I lay awake all night, feeling like I'd j just had 3 cups of coffee, although I hadn't.  Then I got sick to my stomach (diarrhea) at about 4 or 5 AM.  I was also feeling anxious, and unable to feel comfortable in bed.  I'm going to try and take care of myself today.  I have to take my son to the doctor at 3.  My mom had yet another trip to the emergency room, so maybe the stress from that triggered it. Jennifer

Hi getofflex, I thought I should come see how you were.  Sorry to hear of your bad night last night. I had one of those nights the other night too, could not sleep well, feeling like I had had so much caffeine, sweats, etc.  Something in the air...Sounds like you are under some stress.  I hope your Mom is okay and that your son works through the decision he has to make.  Thinking of you, US

Hi unfolding sky, thank you for your concern. Yes, I have external stressors all around me.  Not only my mom and son, but my husband is stressed to the max about his job.  Sometimes I wonder if I'm wise to get off this antidepressant.  At any rate, I'm going to take it extremely slowly.  Maybe I'll just hold at this dose for a while.  Jennifer

I'm currently 97.3 percent free of Lexapro.  My original dose from 26 months ago was 10.0 mg, and I'm now taking only 0.27 mg.  I'm now on the liquid, and each ml of liquid is equal to a mg of lexapro (tablet).

My question is:  At what point do I start tapering at greater than 10% of the previous dose?  If I follow the normal protocol, I would take 0.27 for 4 weeks, then. 0.243 for 4 weeks, then 0.22 for 4 weeks, then 0.2 for 4 weeks, then 0.18 for 4 weeks, then 0.16 for 4 weeks, then 0.145, then 0.13, then 0.12, etc.  At what point do I finally jump off and go to zero?  At this rate, it will take a very long time to finally get to zero.  However, I've read enough horror stories on here of people who went off Lex too fast, and it was hellish.  Or, since I'm tapering by such minuscule amounts now, can reduce every 3 or 2 weeks, instead of 4 weeks?

I'm doing well these days.  My sleep is much better, thank the Lord.  Still not normal, but much better than it was.  I'll probably do a small taper this weekend, if I continue to feel well the rest of this week.  My mom is doing better, for now.  She is elderly and has a lot of discomfort, but whenever she goes to the hospital, they run tests and don't find anything.  We think its because she has an unhealthy diet and and doesn't get enough fluids, among other things.

My husband and son are doing alright.  We took our son for a college visit yesterday, and that went pretty well.  My husband's job is always a huge stress factor.

How are you doing?

Well I'm feeling the taper from 6 days ago.  I'm feeling spacy and tired, even though I've slept pretty decently the past 2 nights.  I'm feeling very emotional. It doesn't help that my sister is trying to push my boundaries and manipulate me into doing things for my elderly mother than I'm not able or willing to do.  I think I need to change the channel, and reread my paper about dealing with emotional spirals.  I'm going to go make a pot of chili now.  Jennifer

Thanks, unfolding sky for your concern.  It is not easy, but it is quite bearable, and much better than it was when I was tapering too fast because I had not yet discovered this forum, and I was following the doctor ordered taper, which was way too fast.  I enforced the boundary with my sister, and she took it OK.

I realize that I will need to cope with difficult people head on, since I no longer have the antidepressant as a buffer.  However, I believe this is much healthier, and that I will be way better off in the long run to deal with things head on, instead of escaping through numbing my emotions with chemicals.

So it's been 3 weeks since my last taper.   My emotions are coming back to me in spades.  All in all, this is a good thing.  I'm feeling sad, joyful, anxious, loving, and vulnerable all at the same time.  It's as if my world has gone from being 2 dimensional and black and white, into being a wild abstract painting of psychedelic color.  It's like a Jackson Pollock painting emotionally.  I have always been a very emotional person.  I'm an artist, and have always been very sensitive.

However, I'm quite overwhelmed with all of this emotion.  I find it rather scary, and uncomfortable.  Part of the thing is, there are so many crazy things going on around me, so it is arousing me emotionally even more.  Two classmates have lost sons and daughters in their 20's and 30's, and this is very upsetting.  My second cousin just lost her son who is only in his 40's, they don't know how he died.  My husband is majorly stressed by his job and he and I had a pretty upsetting disagreement last Thursday.  My mom is elderly, and very frail.  I am going over to see her tomorrow for the first time in 2 weeks.

I'm coping by limiting my exposure to social media, which seems to often be a drama fest.   I'm working on trying to be on an even keel in my home with my husband and son, and keeping my marriage relationship in a peaceful and harmonious place.  Thankfully I don't have a job outside the home.  I think I need to just go slow and easy, and not take on any extra activities, and rest a lot.  My sleep is disturbed by hot flashes at night.  The hot flashes are partly from Lexapro WD and partly from menopause (I'm 58).  I'm going to do things that are soothing and comforting.

I'm going to wait a while before I do another taper.

Hi Jennifer, good to hear from you. I am sorry you are surrounded by so much loss, that sounds really awful.  One of my siblings just found out a friend of his has some kind of major health issue, could be very serious, he's in his thirties. He's never had good luck, and now this... I understand about your Mom, my Mom is getting frail now too and our family is starting to get worried about her.  How did your visit go with your Mom?  I hope it went smoothly.  Limiting social media sounds like a good idea too.

Also interesting to learn you are an artist, what medium(s) do you use?  I am a bit of a creative type myself as well.  I like your Jackson Pollock reference to emotions awakening as you taper down, very apt.  I see you aren't very far from being totally off Lexapro, I'm happy for you.  Do let us know how you are keeping, US.

Hi Unfolding Sky.  thanks for replying to my thread.  I'm doing much better now.  The rawness and intensity of emotions has settled down a lot, so evidently a lot of it was neuro emotions.  I'm going to hold at this dose until the end of the year, since I will be busy with the holidays, and people coming into town the next 5 weeks.  Then after the 1st of the year I will continue to taper down.  I hear that the very end of a taper is the toughest, so I want to go very slowly.

My mom is doing so so.  I'm learning not to be anxious about her.  she is going through a natural dieing process and that cannot be fixed.  I'm leaving her in God's hands.

I paint in oils, pastels, and watercolors.  What type of creative endeavors are you into?   Jennifer
