I was doing well for about a week, and then I suddenly went into a wave yesterday.  I can think of 3 possible things to have caused it.

1) Shringrix vaccine on July 6, 2021.  I noticed a definite wave started about 10 days afterwards. (I also went into a wave 10 days after my first Shingrix vaccine on Nov. 16, 2020).

2) I felt like I was coming out of this wave, but then we got hit with very unsettled stormy weather the night before last, and it's still ongoing.  Very unusual for July - more like early spring weather than a typical summer storm.

3) I ate lunch at a Thai restaurant with my hubby yesterday, had drunken noodles with chicken.  I'm wondering if it was high in MSG or something else.

I suspect this wave is a combination of the 3 factors above.

It started yesterday early morning.  I slept from about 10:15 pm the night before last, was up about 4 or 4:30 am yesterday morning. I felt extremely physically and mentally fatigued, as if I had run a marathon.  I snoozed in the afternoon, intending to only do so for about an hour, but unfortunately, that turned into about 3 hours of off and on dozing - mistake.

Last night, I felt wired, agitated, and anxious, and was only able to sleep for a couple of hours.  I had continuous intrusive chaotic and anxious thoughts.  I practiced floating, and the APPLE technique, but the thoughts just kept coming in.  I woke up again about 4 PM.

I'm using the coping skills of radical acceptance, prayer, listening to soft relaxing music, a gentle walk, reducing my stimulation and activity level, floating, pet therapy, the APPLE method (not attaching any importance or meaning to my thoughts), and resting.

I've decided I'm going to do a journal each day of what I eat, the weather, any stress factors, my activities, etc, and see if I can find out what is going on.  I haven't done a taper in at least 6 weeks, so it's not my drug.  I'm taking a precise 0.08 mg dose of liquid Lexapro at the same time each day, along with my 75 mg Levothyroxine and a tall glass of water.

I have noticed that this has happened many times before - I can sleep pretty well, and feel OK, then suddenly out of the blue I have a day or two wave like the one above, with severe insomnia.  I suspect I may need to clean up my diet, and see what in my food may be causing trouble.

Any advice or input would be appreciated @Altostrata, @brassmonkey, @Shep, @Erell, and others, thank you.

Being a person who developed food sensitivities, I would suspect something in the Thai food. Did you also have Thai iced tea? It can be highly caffeinated.

Hi @getofflex - I hope your wave is subsiding. I just wanted to thank you for the APPLE technique and the Radical Acceptance website. I haven’t tried the APPLE technique yet but it looks good. I read through the Radical Acceptance site this morning and it’s great. (I love the idea of looking at the stars at night and saying “yes” to accept the reality of the universe.)

No I'm completely caffeine free.  I'm suspecting MSG.  I'll stay away from Thai food.  I'm going to keep a food journal, and see if there are any correlations.  Thankfully I'm feeling some better tonight.

@YersiniaI'm glad that the techniques were of help.  I believe that acceptance really help me be at peace.

@Moonpiethanks!  What symptoms does MSG give you?  I looked up the recipe of drunken noodles, and the sauce is made up of soy sauce, fish sauce, and oyster sauce, all of which is high in MSG.  I'm going to start cleaning up my diet.  My pattern is that I have a few good nights, then suddenly I'll have a sleepless night where I feel agitated and wired for one night, then I go back to normal again.  I know stormy weather affects me, but I have no control over that.  Here in the Missouri, we've been having a lot of stormy weather off and on this summer.  Also, no more vaccines for me for a while.

I got a good nights sleep last night, and feel 100% better today.  I'm very grateful for this.

Hi @getofflex

I'm having that same pattern after my last reduction 2 months ago. Apparently, it was too much. So, waiting for wd/normal to return... lots of adrenaline and cortisol. I've been working it out literally by biking 20 miles every other day on the nearby bike path and alternating a sports activity on the off days. It really helps afterwards but the next day, the anxiety is back. 🤷‍♀️

Like you, it seems like 2 or 3 times a week, I have rough sleep. Woke this morning @ 2:30 and not tired. Did cat nap 'til 5:30 but up since then. I hope to be able to get to where you are but at this rate, it will be some time...

I hope this resolves for us both.

Oh so glad to read this

I can't really tell about MSG : back in 2014 when I started my benzo taper I read on many websites that it should be avoided, so I don't eat food with MSG since.

It could be interesting to keep a food diary : I haven't been able to pinpoint triggering food, but I've read several people that did and found that eliminating certain food helped.

Anyway, really glad to read that you're feeling better today ❤

I'm currently making a pot of completely natural homemade chicken soup.  I hope a cleaner diet helps.  I think the sleepless nights are also partly caused by menopausal issues (getting hot at night).

Hi @getofflex

Thought I’d drop in here, as I am also menopausal. It doesn’t make it easier dealing with that on top of wd.

In my experience it does help. Just give it some time to kick in. I have been inpatient and looking for quick fix, but as we all know that’s not the right way.

Have you tried adding in flaxseed to your diet?

Flaxseed is the richest dietary source of lignans, a type of phytoestrogen. A phytoestrogen is a plant nutrient that is somewhat similar to the female hormone estrogen. Due to this similarity, lignans may have estrogenic and/or anti-estrogenic effects in the body.

Also a high protein diet is good for us during this period, along of course with healthy fats and healthy carbs.

Adding ginger and turmeric to your diet is also beneficial.
Curcumin  ( is a substance in turmeric)boosts levels of the brain hormone BDNF, which increases the growth of new neurons and may help fight various degenerative processes in your brain.

You might know all this, but I wanted to share what is helping me🙏

Hang in there.  They always pass.  I’m doing all right.  Just entered a small wave.  I’m having some mild symptoms, but the irritability has passed.

Really odd weather right now.  The ocean is quite cold for this time of year, and the fog was thick yesterday.  Beautiful, actually.  I love thunderstorms, and I miss them a lot.  Sorry to hear they increase your symptoms.  I used get pressure headaches, and I thought it was the storms that caused them.

We are going out to eat, yet again, but I'm going to order broiled fish with no seasoning, just butter and lemon, and steamed veggies.  I hope that helps.  I ate out at Fuzzy's tacos the day before yesterday, and had a very bad night that night.  Laid wide awake until the sun started coming, then slept for about 2 hours.  I even called them and asked them about MSG beforehand, and they said there were none in their tacos.  Maybe there are other chemicals that bother me.  So many chemicals are in restaurant and processed food now.  When I have these bad nights, it feels as though my nervous system is on fire.  I have this strange inner burning sensation,  and I feel hyper alert all night.  Fortunately, I slept well last night.  I'm working towards just eating a diet of whole natural healthy foods at home.

Thanks for the concern and support @Rosetta, @Hanna72, @Altostrata, @mdwstrx, @Erell, and @Heath.

@getofflex. Just remembered one other occasion after you mentioned tacos and restaurant. About 10 years ago in which I had been on Paxil for 11 years . We started eating lunch at a Mexican restaurant once a week or month. And I started noticing immediately after eating there - headaches, tired, fatigue etc. I am sure full of msg. And I think there are several other discussions on here about it. That’s how I put 2 and 2 together!  There is lots information on it out in google too. I read they used to call it the Chinese headache or flu or something like that because when people ate at Chinese restaurant with msg they got headache. 👍

Thanks @HeathI've been doing a lot of google searches about MSG and glutamine.  I'm trying to reduce them, especially MSG.  I'm also keeping a diary of my food and activities and symptoms to try and find any correlations.  I don't get the headache, I just get the wired feeling and night and insomnia.  What's strange is I can be up almost all night one night, and sleep soundly the next night.  I know I'm still being somewhat affected by the 2nd Shringrix vaccine a month ago.  It took a full 2 months to get over the aftereffects of my first Shingrix back in November.  I'm also having hot flashed from menopause, so this is a factor as well.

Some people do react badly to the MSG flavoring in food.

I just got the first Shingrix shot. My arm was sore for a few days, that's all.

Yes, shingrix is for shingles.  Altostrata, I'm glad yours didn't affect you much.  It's probably because you are fully recovered from the AD's.  Thanks @arborfor your kind thoughts.

I slept well again last night thankfully.  I was careful at the restaurant to try and stay away from foods that are highly seasoned.

Now we have roofers here and it's very noisy in the house, so we (hubby and I) are going to a coffee shop to hang out.

I am sorry I thought I answered you about the MSG.   It definitely causes me to  have anxiety, and seems to ramp up my wd symptoms. It  Doesn't take long for it to react. I have gotten where I'm checking labels to avoid it.

.025 Xanax 3 x daily  Start date 10-13-2013 through 8-13-2014.  Started tapering 6-2014 to 8-2014.  Some small discomfort. 25 mg Zoloft - Start date 5-1-2014.  50mg. 6-2014.  through 7-14-2014 .  Started tapering  7-14-2014, stopped tapering 10-2014.  I did 1/4 of the dose a month.  small discomfort.  These next 3 were prescribed when I made some seriously bad choices with my thyroid medication.  Was in ER twice for possible heart attack.  INTENSE anxiety, panic, fear.   Lost 30 pounds in 2 weeks.  Thyroid levels bounced to extremes for 8 months. Dr. prescribed Zoloft 50mg  9-2105.  After 2 doses had a bad reaction passed out in my bedroom. Also prescribed Xanax .025  at the same time. 3 times daily, 4 if needed.  Was only on it about 2 weeks.  Was not working.  Trip ER they gave me an Ativan IV and it worked and lasted.  switched to Ativan. 9-24-2016. 1.5 mg Ativan - .5 mg  three x daily -start date 9/24/16.  Attempted taper start 12-16-2016. Was shaving Pills and alternating tapering AM, PM and midday dose weekly.  Buspar .5mg  -2.5mg. am and 2. 5mg. pm start date 9-26-2016 .  Lexapro .10mg  start date  - 10-26-2016. Found SA and began 10/14/2017 tapering .001 gm every 4 days Held longer if there were was WD.    Was very sensitive to Ativan. 3-15-2018 Off midday dose - 7-16-2018 Off PM dose - OFF ATIVAN! 11-17-2018 10 mg. Lexapro. PM - 5 mg start date 10/11/2016 increased to 10 mg 2/2/17. 1-1-2019 Began tapering Lexapro.  .001 gm every 4 days.  Held longer if there was WD.  Last doses some I held a month.  OFF LEXAPRO! 2-21 2021 5 mg. Buspar  divided into two, 2.5 mg doses AM and PM- Start date 9/26/2016 Cold turkey on Dr. direction, PM does.  Reinstated PM dose 9-22 N.P. Desiccated Thyroid.  12-22-17 reduced  from  75 mg. to 67.5 daily,  dose now 60 mg a day. Bioidentical hormones. Bi-est/Prog cream, 1/4 tsp.  1 time daily

It is possible the stress of withdrawal has caused you to develop food intolerances, another aspect of hypersensitivity. You might look carefully at

Elimination or exclusion diets for reactions to food (food intolerance)

Histamine intolerance

Overall I've been doing well.  I had a rough day yesterday with anxiety and just a heavy sense of doom hanging over me. But today that is all gone.  I've had drama going on in various areas of my life, but I'm working on detaching from it, and not investing in other people's drama, which is hard when it's your good friends.  Tonight, my 2 nephews are coming over.  There has been drama ongoing in my family or origin, which is nothing new, and I'm hoping my nephews won't bring any of that with them.  I've set some very strong boundaries with the rest of my family of origin to try and reduce my anxiety, and it has really helped.  Boundaries have been extremely essential to me to try and stay away from unecessary stress and drama.

Yes I was feeling pretty good those last couple of weeks. I’m feeling a little bit the effect of this recent taper. An uptick in symptoms sleeping less well a little more anxiety. But it’s manageable. Thankfully

Glad to see your slow and steady taper is going strong. I hope the ongoing drama in your family environment will settle down. It's hard to walk through a difficult environment, let alone when tapering off, so I hope everything will be alright soon. Enjoy your time with your nephews, hope all goes well and you can spend that time relaxed.

Aug 2017 - May 2018 -> Escitalopram 10 mg. June 5 mg and then stopped. Absolutely no withdrawal symptoms.

Nov 2018 - Jan 2021 -> Escitalopram 10 mg. Jan-Feb 2021 - 5 mg, daily (1 month).  Feb-March 2021 - 5 mg, one day out of two (2-3 weeks). No withdrawal symptoms during taper.

--- Since March 13th, 2021 -> Escitalopram 0 mg.

Withdrawal appeared 8-10 days after last dose: introduction topic

Benzos occasionally: Prazepam 5mg (last intake: aug 05).

I also want to add I think a lot of my symptoms, which are hot flashes and anxiety, and maybe even the occasional sleepless night, are not due to WD.  The hot flashes are probably due to menopause, and the anxiety is very similar to that which I had prior to getting on psych meds.  I'm using non drug techniques to cope with these things.  The occasional sleepless nights may be something in my diet, (and perhaps anxiety), and I'm suspecting MSG.  I've been working on my diet, and my sleep has improved since then.

I have gone no contact with certain members of my family (extended family) who are behaving in toxic and highly narcissistic ways.  It is a very big step forward for me.  I've given this a great deal of thought and consideration for years before taking this step, and feel deeply relieved to be away from that.

Thank you @Erellor your support!  I had to set strong boundaries with them, because the drama and toxicity was sabotaging my recovery from WD.  It was firing up my nervous system with anxiety and stress.

I hope you are doing OK Erell.  I know you've been having a rough time since your Paxil/Prozac bridge.  Hang in there - someday your patience and perseverance will pay off big time!

@Rosettathank you for the support!  I'm doing very well today.  The main thing bothering me now are the hot flashes from menopause, which come and go.  They've kicked into high gear the past few days.  Nevertheless, I'm very grateful I don't have WD symptoms today.  I'll take hot flashes any day over that.

How are you doing?

Here I am in a wave.  I was doing so well, I felt quite normal and was sleeping normally for about 1.5 to 2 weeks.  My son came into town for the Labor Day Weekend.  He was crabby with me, because he had a cold, so that was a stress factor - and I went with him and my husband on a 3 mile hike with lots of hills.  Bam - that did it.  I'm dealing with insomnia, anxiety, ruminations, occasional dark intrusive thoughts, and a crying spell yesterday.  I should have known better, but I'm so tired of not being able to do much of anything.  The trouble is, I'm also dealing with menopause.  Whenever I'm in a wave, the hot flashes become much more frequent, and this interferes with my sleep.  I suspect that the menopause and WD are compounding each other.  I was hoping to do another taper in a few days, (it would have been 4 weeks since the previous taper), but I don't think I will be doing that.  I will need to hold longer.  Could it be possible that hormonal shifts from menopause could bring on a wave?
