Priscilla: questions about Zyprexa

I would love to hear from people who took zyprexa and were later able to live good lives meaning that they functioned, held a job, had happiness etc. I think that may keep me motivated as I navigate these ups and downs of the healing process....

APs/AD: 2.5 months Risperdal 1-2mg for 10 days Aug 21-31 2018, Abilify Maintena 400mg (an injection that lasts for a month) late December 2018 to early January 2019, Zyprexa 5mg for 22 days, first time taking zyprexa was in mid September of  2018 for 14 days the second time  for 10 days was November 8 - November 16, 2018; Mirtazapine for 8 days, Gabapentin for 10 days, Propranolol for 4 days, Prozac for 14 days. Oct. 2- 29, 2020: Depakote 500 mg for 14 days October 13-27; haldol 5 mg for 14 days Ocotober 13-27 ; cogentin 1 mg for 4 days; invega shot that is a 1 time shot that lasts for a month.

Update: I feel fine, the only problem is, instead of enjoying feeling fine,  I find that I'm worrying about when I will be in a wave again. I guess after 7 months of not feeling the best all the time you get used to the ups and down and anticipate feeling bad again. Maybe this is for good. Maybe I have healed, or maybe I'm in the process of healing and will still experience waves in the future. I hope this window lasts.

Update: I haven't posted in a while but I think I'm in that slow process of healing. Although I had about an hour of a wave today ( at most) for some reason my mind is fixated on that wave and I can't process that the majority of the day was good. I'm working hard to change my perspective to be more appreciative of being in a window for most of the day, but I guess what I read on this site is true. when you're in a wave it feels like you have always been and will always be in a wave. Then again, it hasn't even been a year since my last psych med injection so perhaps I still need more time to heal. For some reason I think I should be the exception to the norm and should be healed by now. I just hope to get through this. It's so unfair.

I think things are going well! I'm trying to train my brain to see that my waves have improved and that they don't last more than an hour a day generally speaking. For some reason it's not registering in my mind. All I seem to think about is that I had a wave and ignore the fact that the waves were not that long compared to the duration of the window. Thanks for checking in.

Update: I'm currently feeling fine but find it difficult to get over the moments earlier in the day when I wasn't feeling so good. Any thoughts on how to stay in the present moment and not dwell on the past?

Hey Priscilla,

It sounds like things are getting better overall :-)

I don't know anything else as good as yoga for getting back into the present moment.  I wish I'd taken it up when I was much younger and I never regret going even if I don't feel like it beforehand.

Meditation is also effective for coming back to the present moment but probably requires more practice if you're not already used to it.

Cheers

Welcome back Priscilla!

Sorry to hear about your being admitted.  I hope you're doing ok - at the moment I'm working through some trauma from when that happened to me, and I hope you didn't have as bad a time.

It's good to hear from you.

Have you been put back on olanzapine?

Please let us know what you've been prescribed and how long you've been on for this time.

The upside to all this is that this time, when your're ready, you can start a gentle taper that you can control.  That's much more likely to get you where you want to go than the CT last time.  I doubt I could manage a CT of this drug!

Cheers,

Hayduke

Akathisia is horrid, isn't it.. when I was admitted I got shot up with something then put onto 10mg olanzapine.  I had a lot of discomfort from akathisia for a few days.  The first night I said hey, you just can't put me through this, and they gave me something they called cogentin for the night.

Anyways the akathisia settled after a few days and I got stable on 10mg for some time.  I don't know if there's that much you can do about it unfortunately, but are you back on the supplements in your sig?  I've found magnesium L-threonate is really helpful in general.

Hope it settles soon for you Priscilla

That's good to hear.

Akathisia seems to be induced by changes in dopamine levels.  No surprise it seems to show up big time when we get put on these drugs.

I have had a bit throughout my taper, and it is a bother, but now it's pretty much gone at this dosage - it's been some months now.  I think most of the dopamine part of my taper is complete.

If it does show up much when you're tapering, it's a sign your cuts are too big or fast.

Cheers

It would usually show up early evening for me.  Sometimes making it hard to sleep later on.  Usually it's gone away for me within a few days of holding a steady dosage.

No other drugs for it, I don't know of anything that's widely held to be effective.

It's when you make dosage changes that your dopamine receptors have to adjust to the changed levels.  Alcohol and other recreational drugs can induce it as well since they typically involve more dopamine being released.

Priscilla, do you have akathisia? It can be an adverse effect of too-high drug dosage.

This is not medical advice. Discuss any decisions about your medical care with a knowledgeable medical practitioner.

3rd bout of akathisia

Hello all,

So this is the (approximately) 3rd time that I've experienced anti-psychotic induced akathisia. Even though I've healed each time, it's not like I have a reference, such as catching the common cold where I know for a fact I'll get better, to look to. Each bout of akathisia seems new and invokes feelings that I won't ever heal. Any words of encouragement and/or supplement advice would be greatly appreciated.

To good health,

Priscilla

I've heard beta-blockers can be helpful, but I notice from your signature you've been on propranolol before so guessing you wouldn't want to try another medication.

Hopefully someone will have a supplement idea for you. Just know it will pass, it's difficult when you're in the throes of it I know BUT IT WILL

Hi Priscilla,

No medications/drugs now since late 2018?

How would you describe your akathisia?  You describe feeling a newness to it and feelings that you won't ever heal.  Do you feel like you have to keep moving or any of the internal agitations?

And of course.  Sending healing thoughts and encouragement.

What medication?  Can you update your signature to reflect this?  Last I am seeing there is after January 2019, Zyprexa 5 mg for 22 days, and then a recap of previous medications.  Or that is how it reads to me.

Please summarize your withdrawal history in your signature

the first post ^ gives an example of how to do your signature.  And it is limited to 12 lines.

Accountsettings/signature

this ^ should take you to your signature to edit/update

And yes, hopeful that it will resolve with time.

Thank you.
