Shining, I hear you 1000%. Today I was out doing errands and I had the same thought I've had before and shared with my close family: I feel like I need to tattoo on my face something that shows that I'm in withdrawal/or in a wave. Or somehow send up a smoke signal for others to find me. I thank God every day for this forum and for my support system.

I had already experienced invisible disability with my history of concussions and chronic headaches. This invisible disability has felt even more painful and isolating. Still, there have been blessings in the pain. We are standing with you.

Apr 2018: Began 10 mg Amitriptyline (for headaches & insomnia from concussion).

Jul - Aug 2018: Fast taper to 5 mg and then 2.5 mg (too fast, hellish withdrawal at 2.5 mg). Sept 2018: Reinstated 10 mg (many symptoms improved). Oct 2018 - Apr 2019: Updosed & stabilized on 11 mg (2 waves at 3 and 5 months post-withdrawal). Apr 2019 - Apr 2020: Tapered 0.5-0.25 mg per month using compounded pills: 11 mg —> 6 mg. (2 waves at 12 and 16 months post-withdrawal.) Apr 2020 - present: Switched to a liquid taper at rate of 0.1 mg per month. Currently: 1.1 mg. No more waves.

Supplements: Omega-3 fish oil, Vit B12, coenzyme Q10, Hawthorn extract (for tachycardia) Tools for insomnia/waves (as needed): Epsom salt foot soaks, 0.5 mg Melatonin, quality time, waves WILL PASS. Lifestyle: Eat real foods, mostly plants; sunlight, walking, yoga; symptom tracking on adapted Glenmullen chart.

The feeling of somewhat linear healing is the best. Gives you strength for what's ahead. May it continue for you! Sounds like a good idea to hold and catch your breath for a while.

We're lucky that sites like this exists and that moderators and members help so much. Lessens the intense loneliness of this experience.

@composter @Len189 very sweet, thanks! It does help.

Not only are we marginalized for being former "psych patients" but then shot down and not believed by our own doctors. It's dsgusting. Shame on big pharma.

You have a great positive attitude ShiningLight,

You’re username definitely suits you. Yes, most of the medical profession thinks we are making up withdrawals. I went to the psych to get my meds this week and he said that I must be very sensitive to medication because I’m getting withdrawals.🙄 He believes I have withdrawals, but he said none of his other patients have mentioned withdrawals so I must be especially sensitive. He needs to read this site. He’s a really nice person, but he only knows what he’s been taught in medical school. That’s the problem, if doctors were actually taught about withdrawals in medical school at least most of them would believe us.

I’ve gone through such torture, which all started because of chronic pain, and I ended up in psych wards too because of withdrawals from the meds. At the time though, I didn’t know it was withdrawals, I knew nothing about the medications I was put on and off. I had such severe akathisia and I thought there was something terribly mentally wrong with me. I didn’t figure  out until later it was withdrawals. It was a relief to know it wasn’t me, but the meds.

So now its slow and steady, I’m so glad I learnt how to taper properly. We can do this!💚

Been on APs, benzos, ADs and opiates, for chronic pain. Had Akathisia in the past that made me suicidal. Still on Seroquel. 2019:➡️ March10=7.25mg ✔️ April17=7.0✔️ June5=6.75✔️ July14=6.50✔️ Aug28=6.25✔️ Oct10=6.20  ✔️ Oct21=6.0✔️ Dec16=5.80 ✔️ 2020➡️ Jan 21=5.60 ✔️ April2=5.40 ✔️ May29=5.20 ✔️ Aug14= 5.0 ✔️Sep29=4.80✔️2021➡️ Jan31=4.60 mg✔️ April24=4.40mg✔️Jul17=4.30mg ✔️ Aug 28=4.20 ✔️ Oct 11=4.15✔️Nov1=4.10 ✔️ Nov21= 4.05✔️ Dec13= 4mg ✔️2022 ➡️ Jan8=3.95✔️ Jan31=3.90✔️ March2=3.85 ✔️ April4=3.80 ✔️ June16=3.75✔️ July26=3.70✔️ Sep2=3.65✔️ Oct21=3.60 ✔️ Dec8=3.55✔️2023➡️ Jan 26=3.50✔️ March 17=3.45✔️ June12=3.40✔️ July30=3.35✔️ Sep14=3.30✔️ Oct31=3.25✔️This is NOT medical advice.Consult your doctor.

@Carmie and @ShiningLight: I do want to say, it's easy to have a defeatist attitude and a critical attitude towards the medical profession with all this. I totally understand where you're coming from. In my case, I have been able to educate my doctors and my close family who are medical professionals and they fully believe me and have read the papers that I've printed and given them. It was a very difficult thing to do but I have done it and I think it will inform the way they practice. There is still much more to be done to spread awareness generally.

It is simply a shame that medical school and training does not teach the side effects of drugs or the ways to properly and scientifically taper, and for that I feel so horrible. Big pharma as well keeps pushing out new drugs for this and that. It is a deep shame that drugs cause harm in this way when the Oath doctors take is to do no harm. How ironic. We've all gone through so much. But we've found tools that have helped and a resilience within ourselves we never thought we had. I'm trying to focus on moving forward and healing and doing what I can to spread awareness of withdrawal. Much love to you both.

Carmie, I'm so glad you found the reason for your psych hosp admits and are doing better than that now!

Thanks. I have admired your attitude too! I have to work very hard at it whereas it seems to come naturally for you which is great.

It's funny because in real life many people find me to be too "negative." I do actually complain, vent, and gripe a lot. One of my favorite books is "Bright Sided: how the epidemic of positive thinking is ruining America." 🤣 It's a critical look into the cult of positivity, in favor of a tempered realism. The positive people think realists are actually negativists, and the realists think the positive people are too Pollyanna.

I say more positive things here because 1) it's true, and 2) we need to hear it from others when we're going through this because often it's impossible to see the progress ourselves.

I call myself ShiningLight because I when I came here, I felt surrounded by so much darkness. Both internally and externally--by a society that accepts drugging oneself as an appropriate response to legitimate distress caused by the cruel and fragmented world we live in. I thought, what can I do about all these decades I've lost to the drugs? I can shine my light brightly now, because I am still alive. I can do it now.

I received my trazodone today from the mail order pharmacy. There was no safety seal on the bottle at all. The lid was actually off the bottle, and all of the pills were loose in the mail container. I have requested a replacement. That's how healthcare is when profit is at issue; it's just thrown together, and then thrown at you. Right on down the assembly line. Next? 🕹️

Oh, I appreciate that angle @ChessieCat. The bag was still sealed and the other rx, the zoloft, was untouched. But I guess it's possible. The trazodone were white little pills, so maybe somebody thought it was pain medication or something, but they don't mail that...

So the verdict on the damaged drugs is that every once in awhile the machine that packs the rxs malfunctions and that's what happened. It puts the safety seal on by heat and something went wrong, and if the safety seal doesn't go on right neither does the lid.

I'm upset about the dystonia which is increasing in withdrawal.  Or just increasing in general. I think it's from the zoloft because I had it years ago. It makes me want to start tapering the zoloft. But I think wd in general is making it worse.

I can't stretch with my legs in a V without triggering the hip dystonia. It's painful. I can't squeeze my toes without triggering it either.

MD says maybe it goes away as we lower drugs, we don't know. Maybe it gets worse over time and maybe not.

Other than this I'm doing ok. I think internal tremors, like hot flashes, muscle spasms, and pain are going to be a part of wd normal from now on. Thankfully most of my symptoms only happen for seconds at a time. Except being tired and some muscle weakness, those are consistent symptoms.

SL, for whatever it's worth, I get that hip pain after sitting for too long - like my hips are "locking up," and I have to move very very slowly until the pain eases up. It started after I'd been on zoloft for about a year or so, but I did not associate the two at the time. I just thought it was arthritis, but my doctor said no sign of it. So then I figured it was just a function of age and I needed to move more. But in the month between my CT and the onset of withdrawal symptoms, it totally went away. Once I reinstated, it gradually returned. I'm taking this to mean that it's a side effect of zoloft. I'd be willing to bet the same is true for you, too.

2016 - Zoloft 50 mg for klonopin w/d

Approx. Nov 2017 - successful taper of klonopin; Approx. Jan. 2018 - rapid taper Zoloft over 2 wks - no w/d symptoms; May 2018 - Reinstate 50 mg Zoloft per doctor; Aug 2018 - Rapid taper Zoloft over 3-4 weeks - no w/d symptoms for 1 mo.; Late Oct 2018 - pdoc rx'd 5mg lexapro -took for 1 wk; Early Nov 2018 - Reinstate 25 mg Zoloft; updose to 37.5 on Nov 28, 2018; Nov 30 2018 - returned to 25mg Zoloft upon mod. advice; Dec 9 - Dec10 2018 - 12.5mg zoloft liquid+12.5mg zoloft pill; Dec 11 2018 - 25mg zoloft all liquid; Feb 14 2019 - updosed to 26.25 mg liquid; Mar 6 2019 - updosed to 26.88 mg liquid - new symptoms; Mar 13 2019 - back down to 26.25 mg per mod suggestion

Dose Changes: Dec 2 2019 - 5% to 25mg; Jan 14 2020 - 10% to 22.5 (increase in sxs all month); Mar 10-15? 2020,  accidental updose to 25mg; Mar 22 2020 - back down to 22.5mg; Apr 12 2020 - 2.5% to 21.94mg; Apr 19 2020 - 2.5% to 21.375mg (symptom increase); May 17 2020 - 2.5% to 20.625mg; May 24 2020 - 2.5% to 20.1mg - Jun 14 2020 - noticed uptick in symptoms settled 2 days later - July 10 2020 - onset of wave

Thanks Deja. Wish I was done with gaba taper so I could get off. But I suspect zoloft will be very slow and difficult, from previous experiences. Looking forward to the day when I can start.

I'm going to vent. First I will say that I am grateful that I am currently enjoying a period of relative stability. I am going to speak the truth that for me, even when I have relative stability, this process STILL stinks. I feel like it drains the soul. I know that on a day when I'm feeling better, I am more willing to see the positives that, if nothing else, this will result in personal growth, yadda yadda yadda.

I am not in that headspace today. I ain't feelin it. I’m tired. Last night I slept even worse than my baseline nonrestful sleep. I feel that withdrawing is a constant source of stress. Right now it is a constant, low grade, cumulative source of stress, and I’m tired of it.

I think part of this is that I am approaching the time when I have been planning to drop my dose.  I’m scared, and I am worn out by these symptoms—even at the relatively tolerable level that I experience them at wd normal state. I suspect that if I drop 5% as planned, I will be just fine and have only a minor flare. But one is never sure.

Previously I got excited around my dose decreases. I was ready for it! Come n’ get it, gabapentin! Eat your heart out, you lousy louse!

Now I want refuge. I want a cocoon. Someplace safe and calm and cozy to renew myself. I’m doing a little spa and relaxation day at home tonight. I took a nice long bath and I’m just relaxing this evening. It’s nice, but it doesn’t fix it. This is not really a fixable situation. It’s something I have to walk through. I know there will be better days. Tonight my tank is running on empty. And the only way out is down.

At work I deal with stressful situations and all of this is a struggle with a very limited in-person support options.

Thanks for the ear. Sending warm thoughts of hope and comfort to you tonight.

It’s tough that’s for sure. You should be excited!! Each drop is another step closer to being healed. I know it’s really hard to be positive sometimes as it wears on a person. Mindset is everything with going through WDs.

It will get better! Each day that passes is one day closer to being healed!

I follow The Plant Paradox lifestyle by Dr.Gundry. This lifestyle has given me my life back and I feel better than I have ever felt in my life. It has enabled me to finally get off of this medication and truly live my life. Nutrition is the key to health!!!!!

2008 to 2019  - 20 mg Paroxetine

Attempted 2 CT's around the 5-6 year mark. Were absolutely terrible and reinstated. Was never explained by the doctor the seriousness of the short half life of this drug.

2017 - Attempted a tapered discontinuation of this drug and reinstated after being unsuccessful.

2019 - Feb. 12 - After a three month taper I am off of paroxetine. The 3 months were terrible, awful withdrawal feelings. I followed the doctors guidelines for the reduction of this drug and now know it was way too fast.
2019 - Oct. 12 - 8 months off paroxetine. 75% improvement since coming off the drug. Definitely have had tons of challenges along the way. Let’s go!!!!

2021 - Feb. 12 - 24 months off paroxetine. I have minor challenges now. Tinnitus/Headaches are still around but are reduced by a massive amount.

Oh, yes, I understand the battle fatigue very well, SL! I identify so strongly with everything you're feeling right now.

You know, it might not be the worst thing to hold for another week or two. No law says you must taper exactly on schedule. A week or two, in the grand scheme of things, won't make any difference, but may pay huge dividends for you right now. Just a thought.

Thanks @Dejavu. Honestly I don't have much of a calendar schedule; I've thrown that out in favor of intuition and listening to myself. I have a loose plan of dropping 5% one week then the week after dropping 5% then holding for a month. ie modified Brass Monkey. I do think this month I'm only going to drop 5%. And  you're correct, it may not be this weekend; I may give it a little more time.

It helps immensely just to know that you identify with what I'm saying. That's so comforting. Thank you. I wish you didn't have to identify, but as long as you do, it's good to feel connected.

Yes, it truly does help to know you're not alone in the trenches. Some days I wake up, and I'm just so over this s**t. Those are the days I take it as easy on myself as possible. And I console myself with the knowledge that healing is still happening, even if I'm sort of "checked out" that day.

Sending you good energy tonight!!

I totally understand that you feel that way. The fight just wears on you. I'm also scared and worn out by symptoms. I think you are going about it the right way by venting here and letting out frustrations and then treating yourself to something nice, something that gives you respite from this ordeal. Sending healing thought your way.

Hanging in there, thanks ShiningLight. Anxiety, electrical current feeling, nerve excitement and head symptoms are still pretty bad, but I'm trying to cope as best as I can. I think the "dumb acceptance" mentality is working pretty alright, when I embrace it, for example in the sense that "a terrible thing happened to me, can't change what is done, but what I can do is try to get through the next hour/day/week/month and support my recovery to the best of my ability". At least that's how I interpret "dumb acceptance" for now :)

@Len189 yes that's my experience of it too. Obviously it's smart acceptance but the word dumb just fits it in some way for me. I guess because I'm used to fighting. Len I think things are going to keep improving for you. Hang in there.

Thank you, I will, and you too! We will win this battle. I like the phrase "dumb acceptance" as well because, for me, it means I should strive not to think too much about it, over-analyze, reflect/regret and whatnot (not that I succeed most of the time). Just try to accept and keep trudging on like a brave but battle-worn warrior waiting for the war to be over.

Exactly.

In other news, wow seems like neuro finally gets how slow I need to go. I asked him if I can go ahead and cut 5% this weekend because none of this stuff is going to get better while on the meds anyway. He said no, give it more time. Wait until PT appt for dystonia. That is in 2 weeks.

I'm not sure what's been causing this little dystonia flare. I'm actually wondering if it's from the 4 strain flu shot I had a week ago. I thought I was off scott free. Or caffeine, or lavendar oil bath. Or all of the above.

I'm happy to report that my mood is better than yesterday. The support I received here is the reason. It made me feel that I can continue to bear this.

I ❤ you. 👭👫👬

Thanks @Dejavu.

This is a very frustrating wave for me mostly involving repetitive roving physical pains. It seems to get a little worse every day. This morning I turned pale from the pain. Thankfully it's not constant but a few seconds in each area. But it happens a lot. A spot near my R ankle is very painful. Going to start symptom logs again. Does somebody have a voo doo doll on me? That's how it feels.

Seem to have dystonia flareups about 45 min to an hour after gabapentin dose. But at the same amount of time I'm driving to/from work, and I get the dystonia in my legs so not sure if it's the driving or the drug or what. That's as far as I can do with a symptom log today. Will try for a decent log tomorrow.

Had terrible pain on the way home from work and was in pain for about 3 hours. Prior to this, the dystonia would be for a second here or there so it was more tolerable. It has just calmed down. Was crying and my doggie licked a tear off my cheek, so sweet.

Hi ShiningLight,

Sorry to hear you’re in a wave and are getting dystonia. I saw in a post the other day that you were getting fed up with all of this. That’s pretty normal, I think all of us are fed up with what we are going through, especially if we’ve been going through it for a long time. I’ve been suffering for many, many years, with a decade or more still to go.

We can’t change what we’re going through though, so I just try and make the best of each day. There are days I’m totally fed up too. I find distractions help me when in waves, and the other thing is having fun things to look forward to. I can’t always make it to everything I’ve been invited to, but just knowing there are fun things in the future helps me to cope.

Sometimes the anhedonia has been so bad when I’ve been out and about and I can’t feel the joy behind certain things, but I do them anyway. I love taking photos, so that’s something I can look back on later on. I’ve spent many hours editing photos, which has been an awesome distraction too when waves were severe.

I’m off to the movies tonight to see Downton Abbey, eight of us are going. Girly night! Going to an engagement party on Sunday too, looking forward to a bit of a dance. I love dancing, but because I have CFS and not much strength I can only do it in short bursts.

Hang in there. We can do this, one day at a time, one hour at a time, one minute at a time.

Sending hugs🤗

Been on APs, benzos, ADs and opiates, for chronic pain. Had Akathisia in the past that made me suicidal. Hi Carmie, thanks for the support. I appreciate it. You are my role model for being socially active and planning fun things. Kudos! I will work on that. You are absolutely right that having fun things to look forward to helps.
