Asjf I’m finally whole again (After 22years On Zoloft and then 5 years off)

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone.

I haven’t checked in in awhile.

I’m feeling as though it’s safe to say I’m finally 100% free of the withdrawal effects I experienced after 22 years of continuous Zoloft use. I am WELL and no longer experiencing any abnormal physical, neurological or psychological symptoms that I associated with protracted withdrawal from SSRI use. My body and mind has healed. It was a long road but it’s happened. I stopped in November 2014 and it’s been the most challenging journey of my life—but I made it.

I hope this gives Hope and Resolve to those of you who are still inside of the very challenging and at times terribly confusing space that withdrawal creates. But please believe that full healing is possible. I was so low at points in the last five years that I considered taking my own life many many times. Now I look back on that period and just feel deep compassion for the level of suffering I experienced, and also tremendous gratitude to be here now feeling WHOLE.

Now the REAL journey begins—learning how to live powerfully and peacefully inside of this life by reprogramming the learned patterns of thought and behavior which, in the past, brought me to a point where I could no longer cope with life on life’s terms—thus bringing me to those mind a soul destroying meds.

I feel confident that I can achieve a life of true inner peace and joy that I love from this point on and I now have zero doubt at all that removing the medication from my life was the best thing I could have done for myself.

Much love and gratitude to everyone here who

gave so much support during some very dark times. I’ll always be grateful to you, as well as my wife and family and the few friends I have—you all saved my life.

Asjf, so happy to hear such good news! How did you finally go off pregabalin? Did you have any post-acute withdrawal from that?

What was your original tapering method, when you went off Zoloft?

God bless!!! I am so happy for you!!! 🙂

On zoloft since 2000 for OCD/anxiety. Tapered off from 150mg to 100, 50, 25 over Dec/Jan 2015. After month n half off, began depression. Being terrified, as I never had depression before, after a few days, went back to 50mg, then five days later to 100mg. Now stable. I will stop this medication, with time and perseverance...my current taper level and timing are as follows, which includes No other Rx's, No alcohol, NEVER any illicit drugs:

84mg from October 2016

82mg from February 2017

79mg from April 2017

77mg from June 2017

75mg from July 2017

I am so glad to see you posting your success story, it's very inspiring! 😃

if you stopped in 2014, how long before you felt completely healed and free from WD? was it just recently and it took the entire 5 years before you really felt healed?

(I am at one year off and wondering how much longer it will take 😋 )

Currently taking Ramapril (blood pressure) 5 mg twice a day

Omeprazole 10 mg AM and 20 mg PM  (the taper has gone nowhere after the first cut)

Famotidine   once a day (and I still needs tums sometimes)

magnesium 200 mg at night

as of yesterday 2 fish oil capsules "EPA-DHA 1000"

off Lexapro as of 5/2018  - last dose had been 5 mg every other day for a couple years

highest dose had been 20 mg at which point I was diagnosed with Bipolar II, which went away when I cut the lexapro down to 15 mg.

I spent years on Paxil before Lexapro (can't remember dose), briefly on Effexor and Abilify and others I have forgotten. in fact, when I was diagnoses with BPII I was put on all kinds of things which made me feel so bad I stopped them cold turkey within maybe 3 or 4 weeks, thank goodness. since then I've known these pills were terrible and I weaned down the Lexapro with zero help or support over I'm not sure how many years.

Also took 60 mg. Dexilant Oct. 2016 through April 2017, successfully tapered off

Stopped Celexa successfully Oct. 2017

Fast taper of amitriptyline Dec. 2017, had major WD symptoms and reinstated at 10 mg. Jan. 2018

Slow amitryptyline taper started Mar. 2019, reduced from 10 mg. to 0.93 mg. currently

Also still taking .25 mg. clonazapam daily in late evening

Love seeing new stories! **** yes ASJF!

2008: start Lexapro 10 mg which is quickly upped to 20 mg. 2008:2013 try at least four individual times to get off Lexapro, never get lower than 5mg, settle at 15 mg. 2015: again, attempt to get off Lexapro and get to 5 mg. After 6 months, feel i'm stabilizing but go back on a higher dose because of one stressful event. 2016: go to 20 mg from 15 mg due to work stresses, hit severe tolerance for the first time and become very suicidal. 2016-2017: try viibryd and cymbata in an attempt to feel better. Also add Lamictal 150 at some point. 2017: eventually land on paxil 37.5 and Lamictal 150. January 2018: cut paxil to 25. April-July 2018: reduce Lamictal in 50 mg increments till im off August. 2018: reduce paxil to 20 mg. december 2018: dropped Paxil to 18 mg, SEVERE CRASH. @Asjf thank you so much for coming back to post your success story! I read through a bit of your original thread, and the courage you discovered in yourself through your W/D journey is really profound. I've no doubt you will draw from those resources moving forward today . . .

I really appreciate hearing from folks who have some distance from the end of their taper (WD-0), and can provide some perspective from that vantage. Life will always present challenges, but I too want to live my life as fully-human as possible, and that includes not being drugged.

Thanks so much, asjf, for posting this.  It's so kind and brave to come back and encourage others still caught up in this nightmare.  I'm not very active on this site, as I'm still in the thick of it.  I find it all overwhelming and I focus all my strength on just keeping my head on straight and getting through the days, but I come here often to read the success stories.

Our timelines and meds are somewhat similar.  I did a too-fast taper off Paxil in late 2015, and suffered greatly.  I then ignorantly cold-turkeyed off Klonopin (clonazepam) in December 2016.  I've been medication-free for almost 30 months now, and 42 months off antidepressants.   Of course much has improved, but I'm far from recovered.  I echo Jackie's question.... how long did it take for you to feel you'd healed?  Did it take the whole five years?   I know it's somewhat selfish to always ask, "How long... how long..??"  But after 42 months of trying to hold on.... well, any hope you can offer would be very welcome.

Thanks again - I hope you have a beautiful life.

1996-PPD - Paxil
1997- Paxil poop-out - Effexor
2000- pregnant-quit Effexor cold turkey - horrific, still brings tears to remember
2002- PPD again- healthy baby, nursed 1 year, so back on AD says MD- Wellbutrin, then added Celexa. Another MD added Neurontin to 'help with sleep- periodic limb movement' not telling me it was for epilepsy and mood stabilizer.
2007ish-complete lack of motivation and personality due to meds. Several attempts over next 8 years to taper off unsuccessfully - convinced each time that it's relapse not withdrawal by well-intended MDs. Intense craving for alcohol- only thing that made me feel like myself, but inherent problems with that of course. Attributed personality changes to depression though, and switched to Cymbalta.
2007-2013- Cymbalta - in complete mental fog. Marriage has ended and by now seriously drinking to stay afloat.
2013- Cymbalta goes generic, went through unannounced and sudden withdrawal until I figured that one out. Switched to Paxil. Again.
2015- Paxil poop-out. Again. Switched to Wellbutrin, again, but MD assured me generic was same as original. No, it isn't.
2015- I'm depressed on and off meds, so going to taper off for good. Went back to Paxil, and relatively quick taper until script ran out in November.
2016- That's it. Here I am.

Congratulations!!!  Thank you for such an encouraging story.  You've been to hell and back and you've shown it's possible for the rest of us as well.  I can't tell you how much I needed this right now.

1994-2009 benzos from age 20 to 36.  Added Cymbalta 60mg in 2007.

2008-2009 tapered benzos to zero and quit Cymbalta Cold turkey.  WD HELL for two years

2011 started on Lexapro to combat the withdrawal and it worked.

2015 switched to Prozac as Lexapro was not working as well

2017 quit Prozac cold turkey November and crashed into WD.  Reinstated Prozac In December with no benefit.

2018 Switched back to Lexapro in January and it took most of the issues away in around 2-3 weeks

2019 In February Lexapro has pooped out and WD feelings back.  Tolerance WD I'm sure.

March 12th Upped my dose to 30 mgs per doctor's advice to see if Tolerance WD goes away but have had worsening sleep issues with limbs jerking and less sleep.

March 17th dropped back down to 20 mgs and had less limb jerking last night but sleep no better.

           April 20th cut to 18mg.

  • 2 weeks later...

Thank you for this! :)❤️ I'm stressed out about having been off Venlafaxine for almost 2 years (I took it for 8 years) and I'm only 50-80 % better, but this gives me hope! :D

  • 2009 - 2017: Venlafaxine (Effexor) 150 mg. Tapered off in under 4 months, from May 2017 - Sep 2017. Didn't get that many side effects and felt fine for 1-2 months.
  • End-October 2017: Starting getting pain throughout my body.
  • End-January 2018: From one day to the next I got an extreme stress-like inner "shaking" feeling in my body that made me want to opt out for the next 7 months. Also got about 20-30 other bodily symptoms.
  • August 2018: Amitriptyline 10 mg. Tried it for the "shaking" feeling and it helped some. Also started therapy in December 2018 because I had very intense emotions and didn't know why. In July 2019 I wanted to go off Amitriptyline but researched it first, and found out that my mysterious symptoms must have been Venlafaxine withdrawal.
  • July 15th 2019: Amitriptyline taper from 10 mg to 9 mg, using water solution. My symptoms are between 50-80 % better than in January 2018.
  • January 20th 2020: Amitriptyline taper from 5,0 to 4.8 mg. I'm starting to get more symptoms again.
  • February 9th 2020: From 4,8 to 7 mg amitriptyline.
  • March 3rd 2020: Symptoms still worse, so went from 7 to 10 mg. Was quickly better on this dose. Won't try tapering until I'm much better.

Thanks for the update! It helps a ton when the low days hit hard and I want to just go back on the drug.

I follow The Plant Paradox lifestyle by Dr.Gundry. This lifestyle has given me my life back and I feel better than I have ever felt in my life. It has enabled me to finally get off of this medication and truly live my life. Nutrition is the key to health!!!!!

2008 to 2019  - 20 mg Paroxetine

Attempted 2 CT's around the 5-6 year mark. Were absolutely terrible and reinstated. Was never explained by the doctor the seriousness of the short half life of this drug.

2017 - Attempted a tapered discontinuation of this drug and reinstated after being unsuccessful.

2019 - Feb. 12 - After a three month taper I am off of paroxetine. The 3 months were terrible, awful withdrawal feelings. I followed the doctors guidelines for the reduction of this drug and now know it was way too fast.
2019 - Oct. 12 - 8 months off paroxetine. 75% improvement since coming off the drug. Definitely have had tons of challenges along the way. Let’s go!!!!

2021 - Feb. 12 - 24 months off paroxetine. I have minor challenges now. Tinnitus/Headaches are still around but are reduced by a massive amount.

Hello ASFJ. I find your story very encouraging, and empowering.  I read some of the links to your older post, and you went through hell, like so many of us.  I"m currently on a low dose of Lexapro.  I was thinking shoot, I can be off this stuff in a month or two.  Ha.  When I dropped from 0.4 to 0.3, I got hit hard.  The Lord is using this to help me develop patience and humility.  It's humiliating to be take a beating from a chemical.
