MissyE: tapering from venlafaxine/Effexor

Missy, what is your daily symptom pattern? Are you taking any other drugs?

What is the content of your thoughts when you are low?

Why did the crisis team want you to switch to vortioxetine, among all the other choices?

This is not medical advice. Discuss any decisions about your medical care with a knowledgeable medical practitioner.

Hi Alto

Thank you for such a quick reply.

My thoughts are obsessed with killing myself.

My symptom pattern is worse anxiety in the morning.

I'm only on venlafaxine.

They have chosen vortioxetine because of my drug history.

What is the trail of your thoughts that lead you to think of suicide?

What times of day do you take your drugs? About what time in the morning do you feel anxiety? Do you get anxiety before or after you take venlafaxine?

What about your history indicates you should take vortioxetine?

This is not medical advice. Discuss any decisions about your medical care with a knowledgeable medical practitioner.

@MissyE,

Don't want to distract you from Altostrata's response above, please don't miss it just because I have posted.

Just wanted to say hello and I am very sorry to read that you've been struggling. I think you mentioned before that this was, in part, because your routine had gone out te window because of lockdown etc. I don't think any of us could have estimated how stressful the current climate could/would be. So many people are having bad, bad waves. You were doing really well until lockdown, I do recall...obviously with ups and downs. What I'm getting at is that this is most likely circumstantial, don't you think, rather than a problem with Venlafaxine? Have you got support from your family? Sorry, hope that's not nosey. You must also have been pretty stressed out with home schooling kids etc. I'd imagine.

I noticed you hadn't been around for ages and you mentioned before you were finding things a bit difficult. Really glad you are back  and looking for support.

January 2008 to April 2015 Citalopram 20mg to 5mg, reducing in 50 per cent leaps. Jumped off at 5mg

March 2016 used MDMA triggered setback

April 2016 Citalopram 10mg October 2016 cut to 5mg, May 2017 cut to 2.5mg

May 2018 used MDMA triggered setback

June 2018 Citalopram 2.5mg up to 10mg, then back to 5mg

July/ August 2018 7.5mg, then 10mg

June 2019 updosed to 20mg Citalopram

August 2019 cold switch to Venlafaxine 75mg XR

Supplements; 1100mg fish oil daily; also 100mg Magnesium Glycinate. Tried Vagifem 10mcg from mid May 2021 to mid June 2021; caused depression, so stopped.

I'm anxious when l wake up before meds.

Meds

07:30 75mg XR and 37.5mg IR with 1g omega 3

12:30 2g omega 3

18:00 75mg IR 1g omega 3 400IU vit E

The suicidal thoughts are there in the background, they started April E.g. if l feel I can't cope with something they are there.  They feel comforting, which scares me.  I've had them before but not this intensely.

They tend to peak in the afternoon.

I have just reduced venlafaxine by 12.5mg XR today in line with my cycle.

Vortioxetine is because I've tried so many others.

Hey you guys!

I'm back in a window.

I didn't go with the meds change.

I am so grateful to be alive right now and proud of myself for choosing to continue WD.  Thank you again @Altostrata and @sunnysideup69 for your support in one of my darkest hours.

I've decided l need a job, so I've put my energy into applying.  Also lockdown and my new Somatic Experiencing practitioner have taught me l was doing too much high impact exercise and addicted to the adrenaline.

I've got right out my routine with no gym so I'm going to resume at a gentler pace.  Less hiit, spinning and running, more jogging, weights and stretching.  Maybe bring back a little boxing....

Hakunamata friends.

Good morning campers.

A message of hope.

Encouragement to keep going, no matter how tough things seem.

I am eternally grateful l didn't change or increase my meds, last wave.

Thank you god!

It is so hard when l feel that bad,  like l don't know what to do, but l got through it with my fantastic family, SA, psych team and SE therapist.  I really have the dream team now.  So grateful.  My psych team always let me lead and accept the "side effects" are bad enough that l don't want the risk any more.  My psychiatrist (who l have only spoken to once by phone) reminded me cPTSD is psychological; and l know the body stuff needs releasing in tiny titrations, with the support of my therapist.  Yes I'm a work in progress and will be all my life.  Love your journey.  Love life.  Love yourselves.

Often it's best to listen to your inner voice, no matter how quiet; and do nothing.  Just be.  Stay safe and remember: this too shall pass.

Peace, love, sparkles; namaste.

Hey you guys.  Update...

Waves for me are anxiety and depression.  Windows mania.

Now add to ma labels (sad, cptsd, anxiety &depression, borderline traits)... Bipolar.

Gah gah & more gah

(thanks @sunnysideup69 )

Under house arrest, kinda, they'd tag me if they could.  Family intervention last week (husband, dad, sister) under home treatment team again await review from Dr.  Maybe I'll meet him this time... others all very understanding.  Not seen the people who I think are assessment and crisis team members ... I think.  Confusing NHS hierarchy.  Thinking add in lithium to stabilise, continue super slow taper off venlafaxine.  Aim stability.  NS regulation.  Life normal for me.  Peace.  Off all meds... One day.

Need sleep, appetite, connection, safety, trust, compassion, patience, exercise, lose the hungry hired feeling, sit with toxic shame it'll pass, just a feeling imposed by others.. Not booze to sleep and cigarillos (cafe crème blu) to calm me down.  Prayer beads broken by youngest son.  I am trying my best.  Cards confiscated by husband, can't stop illicit spending.  Phone curfew no phone calls after 8pm.  Husband's given me last chance sort it out or DIVORCE.  Family first.  I get it, I'm insightful and empathic, my super powers.  I'll be ok; I always am.  I'm a survivor.  Want to vr z thriver.  Didn't get dream job.  Need paid work.

Peace, love, sparkles; namaste

Q:  Have you been diagnosed with bipolar?

Q:  When was this diagnosis made?

Q:  Was it before you ever took a psychiatric drug?

If the diagnosis was made after you commenced taking psychiatric drug/s then the diagnosis may be linked to the drugs and not a correct diagnosis.

Missy, have you taken your drugs off-schedule or stayed up too late, drunk alcohol, or taken antibiotics recently? Made any other drug changes?

We can't advise you on new drugs to "stabilize", all we do here is help people taper off and cope with withdrawal.

Hey @Altostratao @ChessieCat

I got manic then drank.  I've had cyclical mania (undiagnosed) since I first took st johns wart age 20.  Always more depression though. Prior to that it was just depression (undiagnosed) from 12.  Diagnosed depressed at 21 and SAD at 22.  Anxiety and depression at 31.             ?borderline then actually diagnosed cPTSD at 39.  I now realise it's all symptomatic of the childhood trauma.  Disregulated nervous system.

It's a confusing scary journey. I'm 43.

I know you help people to get med free l want to be med free and stable.  But my family can't take the mood swings.

Ahhhh!! Why is there no simple answers.

I know keep off booze is simple.  I can do that 1.

Q:  What dose were you taking?

You may have had an adverse reaction to it or to tyramine when taking it.

You may also be a person strongly affected by alcohol. If you're still indulging, we probably can't help you here -- you're taking a drug intermittently.

You may wish to talk to a counselor about the nature of your mood swings, you might be able to learn some techniques to control them.

Until quite recently on evenings when I didn't feel too bad, I would have a small glass of red wine (you know, it's good for your health!). But then I realized that even that small glass was aggravating my symptoms. So I stopped cold and I think to my benefit.

Bupropion 2013-14, 4 mos; Lexapro 2014; Cymbalta 2014. Gabapentin 2014; Mirtazapene 2014. Buspirone 2015.
