Revealed: One in four people are taking addictive prescription drugs as official review calls for national helpline and new guidance for GPs to end pill crisis / https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-7445657/One-four-people-hooked-prescription-drugs-official-review-calls-national-helpline.html

Prescription drug dependency worrying - health chiefs / https://www.bbc.com/news/health-49639914

Good to see this difficult topic getting some airplay. Both articles are well worth a read.

The Daily Mail article above goes as far as to call antidepressants "addictive". Not sure I care for the wording in the BBC article of "misusing", since I personally got to this point by taking my tablets as prescribed. Good to see gabapentinoids listed as problematic.

Quote

Five classes of medicines were included in the review - asked for by government amid concern that large numbers of people were misusing prescription drugs.

They were:

  • Antidepressants
  • Opioid painkillers for acute pain and injury (excluding use in cancer patients)
  • Gabapentinoids (used to treat epilepsy, anxiety and nerve-related pain)
  • Benzodiazepines (mostly prescribed for anxiety)
  • Z-drugs (sleeping tablets)
