My periods were very heavy and long then became too long while taking effexor.. I learned I had an ovarian cyst (something listed as a side effect of effexor) had that removed it did not slow or stop my periods they continued as normal.  I was put on a hemophilac drug.. which I did not use much as it made me feel unwell.  This all took a couple of years.

A few months before I quit effexor my period just stopped. I think 2 months then I quit cold turkey and my periods never returned.  I think I was too young for menopause based on what is the norm in my family however I cannot be sure.  I have read reports of Effexor causing early menopause but not that many so I think it rare again I can't know for sure.

When I look up the norm for menopause I was under the normal age according to google.

Since my first issue was excessive bleeding I had a period more than I did not have it for 2 years... during that time I was taking effexor 150mg and celexa 40 mg.. I was taking both of these when I had the ovarian cysts too.

This is about ssri induced bleeding - and a few other things.

"In addition, people taking a combination of drugs that raise the level of serotonin in the body can develop a disorder called serotonin syndrome. The most common causes are taking an SSRI at the same time as a monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor or a triptan migraine drug (for example, frovatriptan [Frova], rizatriptan [Maxalt], sumatriptan [imitrex], and others). The syndrome is characterized by altered mental status, neuromuscular abnormalities, and dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system, which controls involuntary reflexes that affect breathing, heart rate, blood pressure, and the digestive tract. Tricyclic antidepressants may also contribute to serotonin syndrome.

SSRIs can increase the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding, particularly when taken with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as aspirin, according to a recent Danish study. This increased risk of bleeding means blood is less likely to clot, an effect that may be beneficial to certain people at risk for heart attacks and ischemic strokes —conditions caused by blood clotting. Another study found that depressed heart patients treated with the SSRI Zoloft showed significant reductions in the level of clotting factors in their blood, compared with those receiving a placebo. However, in people already taking an anticoagulant to prevent or treat blood clots, an SSRI may increase the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding, according to a recent study.

A recent Canadian study found that SSRIs may increase the risk of fractures in older adults, possibly by compromising bone quality and strength as well as by increasing the chance of falling."

http://www.healthcommunities.com/depression/selective-serotonin-reuptake-inhibitors-ssris_jhmwp.shtml

This is from a search on effexor and I believe it to be true of ssri and snri... changes in the platlets in our blood cause it not to clot as is could or should

Just so you are all aware.. and know what to look up it is a platelet issue that causes the bleeding the same .. year I had the ovary removed I had a gastro bleed... shortly after - a few months after I quit celexa... I thought it was making me sick... dizzy headaches and no I did not ask if I could quit just told the doc after I quit... I went down by half for awhile then stopped it ...

I took effexor for 2-3 more years after quitting celexa

Had a car accident in 85
Codeine was the pain med when I was release from hosp continuous use till 89
Given PROZAC by a specialist to help with nerve pain in my leg 89-90 not sure which year
Was not told a thing about it being a psych med thought it was a pain killer no info about psych side effects I went nuts had hallucinations. As I had a head injury and was diagnosed with a concussion in 85 I was sent to a head injury clinic in 1990 five years after the accident. I don't think they knew I had been on prozac I did not think it a big deal and never did finish the bottle of pills. I had tests of course lots of them. Was put into a pain clinic and given amitriptyline which stopped the withdrawal but had many side effects. But I could sleep something I had not done in a very long time the pain lessened. My mother got cancer in 94 they switched my meds to Zoloft to help deal with this pressure as I was her main care giver she died in 96. I stopped zoloft in 96 had withdrawal was put on paxil went nutty quit it ct put on resperidol quit it ct had withdrawal was put on Effexor... 2years later celexa was added 20mg then increased to 40mg huge personality change went wild. Did too fast taper off Celexa 05 as I felt unwell for a long time prior... quit Effexor 150mg ct 07 found ****** 8 months into withdrawal learned some things was banned from there in 08 have kept learning since. there is really not enough room here to put my history but I have a lot of opinions about a lot of things especially any of the drugs mentioned above.
One thing I would like to add here is this tidbit ALL OPIATES INCREASE SEROTONIN it is not a huge jump to being in chronic pain to being put on an ssri/snri and opiates will affect your antidepressants and your thinking.

As I do not update much I will put my quit date Nov. 17 2007 I quit Effexor cold turkey.

Yes!  I missed 3 months!  After many pregnancy tests, I gave up and made a doctors appointment.  My *lady doctor* tried to convince me that because I'm overweight it HAD to be PCOS. She wanted to hear nothing of the possibility that it was related to the stress of withdrawal or the withdrawal itself.  I'm currently late for this period, but my body is still experiencing a lot of stress and I'm struggling with a wave here at the 3 month mark.

I'm saddened that my doctor wouldn't give the withdrawal option a thought and immediately blamed my problems on something else. I'm sorry that other people are experiencing problems, but boy does it make me feel better to have my belief get a bit of validation.

**edit to add this**

As Dee1100 said she had, I've also been experiencing really intense/odd cramping/pelvic pain--mine's hasn't been followed by or accompanying a period, but it has been around the time that I should be having my period.

Effexor XR 150 mg and 75 mg tapered off over a month in October of 2014 (after 8 years of use)

Wellbutrin stopped cold turkey in January 2013 (after 3 years of off and on use)

Previously tried Xanax, Klonopin, Ritalin, Citalopram...the list could go on for miles.

I missed my periods for almost a year. In that time I was waking up with panic attack every morning and unable to eat much. My weight dropped and my periods stopped completely.

My weight is a bit better now, and the daily waking with panic attacks has stopped and I've had my periods for about a year now. However, like Dee1100, I'm also experiencing cramping/pelvic pain both accompanying and following my period. It scares me and I wish it would stop.

01/2006 Put on Prozac for anxiety and panic attacks 08/2008 Came off Zoloft after tapering don't remember taper, lost weight, felt like had cold constantly, very panicky, pain everywhere (misdiagnosed fibromyalgia), head funny.05/2010 put back on Zoloft03/2012 came completely off Zoloft followed Dr standard taper- no appetite, lost weight (0.5 stone), flu-like feelings constantly, pain everywhere, head funny, nausea, very panicky, very strong emotions etc Lost 1 stone.04/2013 improving. actually put on some weight and hungry most of the time. Still burning pain joints, stomach upset, headache/feel faint and emotions very strong. Chest very painful too.01/2014 improving still. Gained weight!! Still hungry. Still headache/feel faint and strong emotions and chest/shoulder muscles painful. Periods irregular and very painful. Very tired. Joints burn only if eat refined sugars. Started eating fruits again.03/2014 2 years off. Now intolerances developed to nuts and soya. Permanently hungry, Emotions strong but started healing psychological reasons I was put on antidepressants with therapist. Shoulder pain bad, heady often, very tired.06/2014 flu-like symptoms returned, many intolerances, stomach painful, skin crawling feeling, muscles painful, very emotional. :-((

09/2016 over 4.5 years off, no real changes in symptoms, still much pain, headiness, heart weird, digestion bad, hormones unbalanced, nausea yet very hungry, tired, flu like symptoms etc etc.

<p>taking - vit C, probiotics and digestive enzymesI have Aspergers Syndrome.

All this makes so much sense now.  I was on effexor 150 for 8 years, during that time, before menopause, my periods were horrifically heavy, now I get the connection.   Now i have given up AD 9 months ago, my hormones are all out of whack, and not sure if I want HRT, to correct them.  Any advice?  I want something that may help, rather than go back on SSRIs  (poisons, but worse than that, brain benders), but dont want to replace them with yet another addictive thing, when maybe the problem could correct itself.  but i am suffering, got to do something. advice, very appreciated.

1992 Dothiepin 375mg 8 weeks, exhaustion/depression.  Serotonin syndrome, oh yes!  seizures . Fell pregnant, 3rd baby, Nitrous Oxide, 3 weeks mental hospital pp psychosis. zoloft tegretol.

I don't know what to do with this horrible PMS. As if WD syndrome wasn't enough, I think I fit into the clinical term of PMDD. Primrose oil is not helping, neither exercise, nor yoga, nothing… Already broke up with bf. Feeling so much emotional pain.

-Effexor 150 mgs (2001-2009). Severe withdrawal symptoms during and after tapering for 6 months.

-Pristiq 50 mg (2009-2012) Tapered over a year. Worst year of my life.

-Prozac 20 mg (2012) Tapered over 6 moths to ease withdrawal. Still had severe WD symptoms.

- (2012-2014) Doctor tried more than 20 medications for depression and WD, leaving me hypersensitive, and in protracted withdrawal.

- Most debilitating symptoms during protracted withdrawal have been deep depression, anxiety, brain zaps, fatigue, akathisia, twitching, headaches and terrible PMS.

-January 2015: Started Lamictal 12.5 mg, increased to 25 mg.- Bad reaction when updosed to 50 mg. Stopped.

-February 2015: Doctor tried new antidepressant Brintellix - Horrible reaction. Discontinued completely. Severe AKATHISIA started.

-March 2015:  Started TMS therapy (Transcranial magnetic stimulation) for severe depression. Didn't work.

-July 23-August 12: Had 10 ECT sessions which took away my protracted withdrawal symptoms including: akathisia, brain zaps, muscle twitches, fatigue and depression. Stopped medications.

-September 2015: Experiencing bouts of depression again and muscle twitching.

-March 2016: Started 20 mg Nortryptiline for depression. It helped.

-August 2016: Slowly tapering Nortryptiline.

I have also found both physical and emotional PMS symptoms to be significantly more severe in WD. There is definitely a link between the two. Has anyone found any remedies that help? I have just started taking an herbal supplement by PMS Comfort that I had stopped taking with my rapid taper in February. I will let you know if it seems to help, unless it makes too irritable and I have to stop taking it. Sigh.

2005-2009, Lexapro 10 - 20 mg, CT WD w/severe depression and anxiety:  2010-2015, Paxil, 30 - 40 mg, tapered off at 10 mg/week, moderate anxiety and depression:  2010-2015, Clonozapam 0.25 mg, as needed for anxiety and sleep:  1/10/2015, Zoloft 25 mg, tried to increase to 50 and 75, but nausea and dizziness:  2/13/2015, Paxil 5 mg, added back after 2 weeks at zero to reduce WD:  2/28/2015, Paxil 10 mg, increased from 5 mg to reduce WD, HOLDING:  3/04/2015, Zoloft discontinued (reduced to ~12.5 mg on 2/19, ~6.25 mg on 2/26, then zero):  4/26/2015, Paxil starting 10% taper (no scale so was inadvertently at 20% taper, yikes!):  4/30/2015, Paxil 10 mg, reinstated (WD disappeared between August 2015 and May 2016)

5/02/2016, Started 10% taper, reinstated to 10 mg on 5/11/16:  4/29/2017, Last dose of Paxil (working with holistic psychiatrist, lots of supplements to aid WD):  Primary symptoms: apathy, demotivation, anhedonia, fatigue, stress intolerance, moderate social anxiety

7/1/2018 Finally feeling like myself again, success!!! Praise God! Even with the stress of relocating recently, I am feeling pretty good most of the time now. Granted, I eat healthy, I exercise, I don't drink caffeine or alcohol and I try hard find a healthy balance of quiet and social times. Hang in there and keep the faith, you can do it too!

I developed PCOS a couple of years after I started AD & benzos. When it began, I was taking BuSpar and Paxil, if I remember correctly. A few years ago I discovered that the herb Wild Yam helped regulate my period well. Before I stopped the ADs while on Wild Yam, it was regular. However, after I withdrew it became wildly irregular, again. I suspected that I may not need the Wild Yam anymore. So, I recently started to taper off the Wild Yam. My period slowly became more regular, again. I'm only 8 months off ADs & benos and just stopped taking the Wild Yam completely this past month. I have only had one cycle without the Wild Yam, but it was on time.

I'm noticing that during PMS the physicial and psychological withdrawal symptoms I experience increase significantly as well.

After being on (over 25) psychiatric meds continuously during a 16 year period, I began in July 2014 to taper off 1mg Klonopin. In September 2014, I came off Brintellix, Trazadone, Zoloft, Proprityline & Hydroxyzine in 2 weeks on my own without knowledge on how to taper properly. I've been off all psych "meds" since 10/2014 and am currently experiencing protracted withdrawal.

Medication history: Vibryd, Wellbutrin, Lithium, Prozac, Xanax, Celexa, Cymbalta, Trileptal, Lamictal, Abilify, Zoloft, Trazadone, Citalopram, Effexor, Seroquel, Klonopin, Paxil, Brintellix, Protriptyline, Lexapro, Pristiq, Buspar, Clonidine, Lorazepam, Notriptyline, Hydroxyzine, Serzone.

I was reading and posting about birth control today and read that they are made out of yams.. or they use to be so maybe your getting some hormones from the yams... food is so interesting once we start to learn about it... I read the same thing about lentils once they do something to hormones can't recall what... birth control pills is an interesting subject if you did a search on here you would likely find it... I can't recall the name of the thread just now.

I'm still tapering and I had a constant menstrual period for 4 months. GBN says that stress can cause this and it's very common.

Wanted to put me on birth control pills.

No more pharma for me.

Researched and found a pineapple and lemon juice mix for my problem.

Has helped tremedously and also provided other benefits that I was not expecting.

I have increased energy now that I'm juicing. The bleeding hasn't completely stopped but I've had many days of no bleeding which is good. The days I do bleed it is not heavy. So the juice is doing something.

So yes, I believe withdrawing can cause a lot of menstrual imbalances or maybe it's the stress of withdrawing that causes it. Either way it's a bummer.

Prozac 1999-2009 quit semi cold turkey.

2012 Placed on Seroquel 25 mg, Tranxene (Clorezepate) 3.75 mg 3x a day, Remeron 30 mg for anxiety/akathesia.

Weaned off Seroquel and Tranxene .to Remeron 15 Mg.

In May 2014 tried quitting Remeron at its lowest dose. Had severe withdrawals.Reinstated Remeron at 30 mg by doctor. August 5 2014 entered hospital. Doctor pulled the Remeron and bridged it to Pamelor (Nortriptyline) 40mg and Zyprexa 2.5mg.After removing the Remeron all my bad symptoms went away and I am stable.

9/11/14 - 7.5 mg tranxene, 40mg Pamelor, Zyprexa 2.5mg

12/29/14 -  20mg Pamelor, 1/6/15,  7/31/15 3.5mg, 8/10/15 3.2 mg, 9/15/15 2.2mg, 10/15/15 1.8mg

(Feb 2016 - 1.4mg Pamelor only -  OFF OF TRANXENE AND ZYPREXA SINCE DEC 2014 BENZO FREE Since 2014. Nortrityline (Pamelor) .8mg Aug 2016

Same same same. If I drop too quickly my periods are all over the place. Not too heavy but every 18-19 days or so. This is when I start to feel bad too. If I hold until my periods regulate I find that my other symptoms go. This is usually the indicator for me that my body is settling down. I was diagnosed with PMDD by doc but it's definitely a withdrawal symptom for me as it settles with all the other symptoms.

2003 Zoloft for PND. No other Psych history before this.

2009 CT. Huge withdrawal. Voluntary hospital admission. Successfully stabilized on 40mg Prozac.

2012 CT after 2 years of tapering to 10mg. Another Disaster. No hospital admission. Stabilized 40mg Prozac

2014 CT after 2 years of tapering to 5mg. Destabilized but not as bad as previous. Found this site. Reinstated 5mg. Stabilized quickly but held for 6 months.

Feb 2015 4mg Prozac

March 2015 Tramadol for Pain after an OP. Didn’t realize it was an SNRI.

March 2015 3 mg Prozac

April 2015 2.5mg Prozac

May 2015 2mg Prozac

June 2015 Destabilized (After research believe it was delayed withdrawal due to the Tramadol)

July 11th 2015. Updosed to 2.5mg

Anyone experience a constant ache /tingling type vibration in the uterus from wd?

It started about 8 weeks ago, new symptom or? (or at least that's when I noticed it)

Was taking lots of inositol which I've decreased some as maybe it can cause cramping?

meds tapered @ 50% under psychiatrist June 2013 to October 2014 taper Effexor 150mg, Prozac 40mg,HRT,Gabapentine 500mg tid,Lamotrigine 25mg bid, Librium 5mg qid. October 2014 reduced final med prozac 40 mg-0mg in 4 weeks! 6 weeks later major wd kicked in. Off all meds oct 2014

supplements:Omega 3 4000mg, Vit D 2000mg,March added Inositol 6g 4/ day, TrueHope EMP 2.5 caps. + GabaMax (Phenyl gaba) 1/2 tsp 2/ day, choline bitartrate 250 mg up to 4/ day. June + ltryptophan adverse reaction.

Reinstatement 1 dose 10 mg fluoxetine. adverse reaction face & chest rash the next am...related?saw my neutrons firing, felt like brain swelled or was growing. Too high dose and possible interaction w supplements.June 22,15:Update...stopped emp plus.not sure if it was helping or hindering. Reduced inositol from 24 g/ day to 6 g @ bedtime w gabamax

June 1 mg x ?days, panicked! June, reduced to .50 mg x 2 days, family freaked out, back up to 1 mg

Sometimes think I maybe reacting to meds but it could also just be continuing or new wd symptoms. Occasional rash concerns me but I'm pretty sure an allergic rash would not be intermittent?

August: Prozac 1 mg, quetiepine 6.25 mg @ bedtime, omega 3, vit d doses same. inositol 1.5 tsp w 1/4 tsp gabamax (300 mg phenyl gaba + other ingredients)

Still experiencing disabling symptoms.

Disappointed that I don't feel better being off meds as many report experiencing sx but feel better in the mind...I feel worse. Learning to cope w sx

Mid August reduced inositol to 1.25tsp,gabapentin down to 1/8 + 1/2 of 1/16 tsp (going slow as anxiety increases w each reduction)

August 28: increased Prozac to 1.5 mg hoping for some relief.

Biggest problems now are fear, anxiety, depression along w the physical weak legs and exhaustion.

Upset with myself that I was drug free and then caved looking for relief. All is not lost just because I am taking minimal doses of these drugs. Must remain strong and have faith that I can do it without the drugs...

Yep. Had it constantly for months, like the muscles in there were constantly fluttering. Now it appears occasionally, maybe once a month.

*I'm not a doctor and don't give medical advice, just personal experience
**Off all meds since Nov. 2014. Mentally & emotionally recovered; physically not
-Dual cold turkeys off TCA & Ativan in Oct 2014. Prescribed from 2011-2014

-All meds were Rxed off-label for an autoimmune illness.  It was a MISDIAGNOSIS, but I did not find out until AFTER meds caused damage.  All med tapers/cold turkeys directed by doctors

-Nortriptyline May 2012 - Dec 2013. Cold turkey off nortrip & cold switched to desipramine

-Desipramine Jan 2014 - Oct. 29, 2014 (rapid taper/cold turkey)

-Lorazepam 1 mg per night during 2011
-Lorazepam 1 mg per month in 2012 (or less)

-Lorazepam on & off, Dec 2013 through Aug 2014. Didn't exceed 3x a week

-Lorazepam again in Oct. 2014 to help get off of desipramine. Last dose lzpam was 1 mg, Nov. 2, 2014. Immediate paradoxical reactions to benzos after stopping TCAs

-First muscle/dystonia side effects started on nortriptyline, but docs too stupid to figure it out. On desipramine, muscle tremors & rigidity worsened

-Two weeks after I got off all meds, I developed full-blown TD.  Tardive dystonia, dyskinesia, myoclonic jerks ALL over body, ribcage wiggles, facial tics, twitching tongue & fingers, tremors/twitches of arms, legs, cognitive impairment, throat muscles semi-paralyzed & unable to swallow solid food, brain zaps, ears ring, dizzy, everything looks too far away, insomnia, numbness & electric shocks everywhere when I try to fall asleep, jerk awake from sleep with big, gasping breaths, wake with terrors & tremors, severely depressed.  NO HISTORY OF DEPRESSION, EVER. Meds CREATED it.

-Month 7: hair falling out; no vision improvement; still tardive dystonia; facial & tongue tics returned
-Month 8: back to acute, incl. Grand Mal seizure-like episodes. New mental torment, PGAD, worse insomnia
-Month 9: tardive dystonia worse, dyskinesia returned. Unable to breathe well due to dystonia in stomach, chest, throat
-Month 13: Back to acute, brain zaps back, developed eczema & stomach problems. Left leg no longer works right due to dystonia, meaning both legs now damaged
-7 years off: Huge improvements, incl. improved dystonia

Strange. I had this too for a very very long time every single day. It happens now and then but not constant anymore.

Was on Citalopram 20mg since Feb 2008 - switched to Paxil 20mg in August 2010

Tapered way too fast in April 2012 by skipping days. Taper completed in 6 weeks

Tried prozac 20mg for 3 days - felt spaced out, not better.

Tried 30mg Cymbalta for 2 days. SEVERE ADVERSE REACTION

Antidepressant free since 14 August 2012

Birth control on and off during this time - Last taken 18 June 2017 - Morning after pill

Started mainly using 0.5mg Xanax beginning 2016 for severe panic attacks and anxiety due to trauma

Xanax on and off never more than 0.5mg at a time, never taking it 3 days in a row - used sparingly

6 Years antidepressant free - Still in severe withdrawal with over 60 symptoms

Severe setback started May 2018 with no let up to date. Developed many new symptoms like tremors, inner vibrations, insomnia, visual distortions and dr/dp are 100x worse, i have severe sensitivity to movement, My dizziness and vertigo got worse and it now feels like im constantly rocking on a boat, my anxiety is sky high, suicidal idiation is back, i feel extremely brain damaged

I just joined this forum in order to get some support as I am having a horrific time. I'm 24, almost 25 and was prescribed Luvox in 2008 for depression/anxiety. I started to taper in August 2014. During this time I've experienced all the usual withdrawal symptoms like nausea, headaches, anxiety, crying spells etc etc - all to be expected I guess!

However being a female I've seemed to had developed a myriad of hormonal problems including menstrual irregularities, severe PMS and my ob/gyn diagnosed me with PCOS in Nov 2014. I opted not to take anything for it it's almost as if I don't want to start supplementing with hormones until I'm done with my taper and allowed my body to recover and heal.

So my question is has any women experienced issues with their mentrual cycle whilst withdrawing?

Yes, I haven't got my periods for about 3 months last year, this was really difficult time for me, stomach pain, and leg pain then I consulted with my gynaec she gave some medications, and recommended to do regular exercises. See irregular menstrual cycles and long lasting cycles for about 7 or 10 days both are serious issues which should not be neglected. Regular excercises can help in regular menstruation and also helps in reducing menstrual pains. Try this you will see the result, with the help of coupe menstruelle you can do your workouts even during menstruation.

I take an estrogen-free BC pill (due to the regular pills causing me migraines) and although this particular pill does not regulate my period, my period has been quite regular for at least the last year or two. Before that, it was light and every few months and I had not considered it may have been because of the Effexor.

Anyways, my point is that with my most recent (10%) dose reduction just three days ago, I woke up this morning with a heavy period. This is NOT normal for me since my period only ended about a week ago.

I've never in my life had periods so close together, and I am very concerned. I don't know how long it's going to last, but am quite certain it must be due to my dose reduction. My initial reduction was only 3.3% so that's probably why my cycle wasn't affected then.

Just crossing my fingers that my cycle has merely re-adjusted itself and it's not something that's going to last me weeks or months. The cramps are too painful. I may consider a lesser reduction next time if I'm going to bleed every time I reduce.

What a pain. Other than that, I am not experiencing any withdrawal symptoms other than minor headaches. And that could just be my allergies.

Hello everyone,

Just reposting my PMS cycle story here.  Good to see i wasn't alone. This was the first time in my withdrawal in having such a hard time with this to the point of wanting to die:

Have any of the women noticed that their menstrual cycle restarted or aggravated withdrawal symptoms? I don't know if I'm just having a withdrawal wave or if I'm starting a completely new major depressive episode again.

I had starting feeling better again about Sept. 18th. Most of the rough symptoms from the last Wellbutrin drop had evened out and I was feeling mostly normal, just minor left over symptoms.  Things were ok for about 10 days.  Then starting the 28th I started feeling worse. My period started on the 30th and is just about over but the past 3 days have been hell. I've been having the awful nightmares again for 5 nights. Muscle aches are awful, I cant eat and I'm having those awful emotional mood swings I haven't had in 20 years.  I can't think.

I don't know if the Paxil was actually doing more than I thought it was, and now that I've been below therapeutic levels for 4 months it's coming back to bite me or if it's just a nasty round of a withdrawal window, even though I didn't drop anything.

It doesn't make sense, I had the bad reaction to the last Wellbutrin withdrawal, but things evened out and I had a pretty good 10 days, now all of a sudden, I get my period, which normally doesn't affect me, and I'm feeling so bad all day for 3 days again i just want to die again.

Has anyone else's menstrual cycle set off an episode like this during the withdrawal process?  If I call the doctor tomorrow all He's gonna say is to go back up to therapeutic levels of Paxil which if I have to then I have if I'm starting another major episode but it would be a shame if that's not the issue.

Hi Colonial,

I had HORRIBLE PMS symptoms during withdrawal (which improved with ECT since 2 months ago). Never experienced that kind of symptoms before withdrawal. I've also read that as we get older, PMS symptoms can get worse, so I'm not really sure if it was withdrawal or my age (33 years old), but I am sure it was more WD than anything else.

I also wanted to die during PMS, got hysterical, punched my boyfriend, got irrational, had screaming fits, cried all day long, sometimes even self-harmed. Physical symptoms of withdrawal would also aggravate, like headaches, brain zaps and muscle twitching.

Since my withdrawal symptoms improved two months ago, my last PMS was not too bad, just got very depressed, but not as bad as before and I didn't have the aggression/irritability I used to. I think right now I'm PMSing (Not sure, since my hormones were affected and moved my cycle because of ECT), but I think I am, because I have the physical symptoms: tender breasts, bloated, a little bit more emotional and cranky. I hope it stays at this level, this is tolerable.

I am taking primrose oil, I think it might be helping, I'll let you know. Exercising daily also helps a lot!

You are not alone, PMS is HELL during withdrawal.

Hi Cdav!

Thanks for your story!  I'm glad you are all here!  Well you were all right, it doesn't seem to be the beginning of another Depressive Episode.  But the Withdrawal symptoms are still raging on.  But this was a longer period for me, and it's soon after a 55% dosage drop in my Wellbutrin, and the last time I dropped my Wellbutrin in half I started getting my period every 3 weeks for about 3 - 4 months.  So I'm hopeful now that I've been on the same Wellbutrin dose a full 4 weeks that maybe this will settle down soon.  This was the first time that WD symptoms started without a med drop.

Colonial, I'm sorry your WD symptoms started out of nowhere. I hope your period normalises and you feel better.

My PMS right now is not the worst I've had, but the emotional symptoms certainly have been escalating. I've been feeling very angry, sad and insecure and having a lot of relationship problems that I thought were things we had solved by now. No physical WD symptoms, though, so I think this is just very bad PMS which I think I will never escape from until menopause, perhaps :(

Can anyone tell me what they mean by "Pelvic Pain" during or right after their period?

My period started the 1st and I had been having cramps everyday so far. The past 3 nights I'm having pain deeper in my abdomen.  It's not severe enough to go to the ER but its enough that I can't fall asleep.  I can't lie straight on my back. I don't know if it's just muscle contraction from having cramps for 2 weeks or something else.

Obviously this would be closer to around my ovulation time and not my period but what was wondering if this has happened to others and what was meant by "Pelvic Pain".  Thank you.

It's a cyst.  At least I have one in the area.  I had to go to the Doctor anyway today and he sent me over to the imaging center ASAP and the CAT scan showed negative for diverticulitis but showed a cyst.  He said it may be bursting.  He said if it happens again when I'm ovulating next month to see the gyno.  My mother said She used to get something like this:  Mittelschmerz.  But this has been 3 full nights and all day today now.  After the period from Hell.  Well atleast the test showed something.

Has anyone else experienced  cysts or Mittelschmerts that started during WD?  It's a normal occurance per se, but I was wondering if the Hormonal changes induced from WD raises the percentage chance of we women experiencing this.  Again, another issue I never experienced before the final stages of my withdrawal.

Thanks everyone.

Colonial,

Sorry about the cyst. At least you know now what was causing your terrible period, and it can be fixed.

I didn't get a cyst. I doubt it is withdrawal, but I'm not really sure. What I do know is PMS is worse since withdrawal, mine was bad again this time. At first it seemed it was not too bad, but as the day of my period approached I got more and more irritable, it caused a lot or problems. Still don't know how I'm going to deal with it next time.

Hope you can get the cyst problem fixed and feel better.

Concerning the Vitex agnus castus supplement - I used to take it for years and it helped tremendously. I used to be in so much pain during my periods that I had to call the paramedics etc. It helped with the pain and also with PMS.

Now that I am in acute WD it does not seem to do the trick. The pain is not back, but the PMS is over the top crazy. Of course I don't know how bad it would be if I didn't take the supplement. The week or even two before my period starts all symptoms get worse day by day and as the day of the period's start approaches it just keeps getting worse. I am an emotional wreck, I just cry helplessly for days. This time around it seems to be making me extremely depressed.

  • 2,5 years of slowly tapering down Cymbalta from 60 mg. Then tried going from 8,44 mg to 1 mg in 8 days. (April 1st 2015). That's when the real hell started. Reinstated. Didn't help. I was added Ativan (2 mg 2 times a day for relentless akathisia that started with jumping Cymbalta). For years had been taking Zopitin 7,5 mg and Stilnox 10 mg for I had not been able to sleep naturally since the 1st day I started Cymbalta). Used to take Xanax occasionally.
  • All of the above were stopped cold turkey when I was hospitalized in the beginning of May 2015.
  • Prior to that I have been on and off the whole spectrum of different AD-s for 15 years (since I was 17).

My introduction.

Tapering:

  • Olanzapine (starting point 2,1 mg): Jan 2016  /---/ April 2018 0 mg. (From 2,1 mg to 0 mg in 1y 3mo).
  • Diazepam (starting at 5 mg) : switching to liquid May 2018;  4,6 mg (June 2018) /---/ 0 mg (Feb 2020) (From 10 to 5 - nobody knows, from 5 to 0 in 1 y 10 mo)
  • Valdoxan (starting at 25 mg): switching to liquid (Feb 2019) /---/ 0 mg (July 2020)

My wave started just a day before my period started. This time with mainly physical symptoms. Feeling cold, no appetite, shaky and weakness, exhausted, like all the strength have dissapeared from my arms and legs, house bound.

Have anyone else had the worsening of physical symptoms during their PMS and periods?

Citalopram 40mg from 2003-2015

Jan 2015 started tapering first dropped to 35mgFeb 30mg, March 25mgApril 20mg, May 17,5mg, June 15mgJuly 12,5mg, Aug 12,5mg,

Sep 0mg for 5 days because of stomac flu and after I raised to 7,5mg. All the symptoms of acute WD shaking, diarrhea, vomiting, barely could walk ect. Still didn't realize that it wasn't only stomac flu but I was also going through WD.

Oct 2,5mg and crashed again badly and quickly raised to 4mg. It was then when I knew my symptoms were due to WD.

Then in November after a month holding on 4mg raised to 5mg due to muscle weakness and had a VERY BAD reaction to reinstatement: akathisia(lasted for one or two weeks), insomnia, anhedonia... Drop quicly back to 4mg, Dec 3mg

Jan 2016 2,6mg( in the middle of Jan after I had been on 2,6mg for a week I tried to updose to 2,8mg and immediately had bad reaction to it: akathisia for a day, andehonia got worse. The next day dropped back to 2,6mg), Feb 2,4mg( a new symptom PGAD lasted 24/7 for 2 months after that on and off), March 2,4mg, April 2,3mg, May 2,2mg, June 2,1mg, July 2,0mg( Pgad almost nonexisting, sleeping pretty good, still some anhedonia but there has been a lot of gradual progress), Aug 1,97mg-1,89mg, Sep 1,88mg-1,49mg, Oct 1,48mg- 1,70mg,

Nov 0,65mg- current dose 0,5mg

Yep, I woke up shaking the last two days as I'm getting ready to start myself, but it's way milder then it has been the last few times.

I have PCOS so my periods are 2-3 months apart so I have no idea when I'm going to get my period so when the shakes started yesterday I knew it was coming and sure enough shaking is stonger today and the cramps have started. This month, interestingly enough, I only have the shaking. normally I have a huge anxiety increase and my OCD goes through the roof too so it looks like it's getting better.

The symptoms for me normally ease the 2nd or 3rd day into my period.

Took 20mg of Prozac from March 2005 until May 2014 with a couple of breaks in there, my last break was 6-7months in 2008.

Tapered every other day for a couple of weeks May 2014 and quit, only symptom was rage for a couple of weeks.

August 2014-major stress in life insomnia started, tried taking Prozac for 4 days and started twitching and moncylonic jerks. stopped taking it, wasn't my generic I thought that was the problem, my Prozac was unavailable for 6 weeks so I waited.

October 2014- took my generic Prozac for a couple of days, twitching and jerking starts again so I stopped.

November 2014-OCD make a very unwelcome appearance so I decide to start at 10mg of Prozac and it works for a couple of weeks, I am sleeping and feeling like me again, after 2 1/2 weeks insomnia kicks in and in the next couple of days the twitching and jerking start again. So I wean off in one week and that's when the problems begin.

December 2014-stop the Prozac, symptoms begin. waking between 3-4 every morning with panic, tremors in back of head, waking up to my entire body vibrating, suicidal, anxiety, eyes blurry, feeling off balance reacting to sleep aids.

February 2015-first window lasted a day.

May 2015- 2 week window (it was beautiful)

June 2015-became depressed, but lifted at the end of the month, had a couple mild waves, but can absolutely tell they are not as bad as 6 months ago.

Ugh. Im going to have to start timing my wean when I am expecting, or already bleeding. This is the second time I got my period/it readjusted just after a wean. It just finished two saturdays ago and here I am suffering with cramps already.

I noticed some of you talking about cysts. I didnt read all the details but I found that tea tree oil knocked out two vaginal cysts I developed a couple months ago. They were gone in a week and never returned. I am not sure if this would help with an ovarian cyst but perhaps it wouldnt hurt to try. I basically used a tampon (with a plastic applicator or else it sticks) and coated it with as much of the oil as I could and left that inserted for a few hours, twice a day.

Sanity check:

How can I tell if the lower back pain and muscle pain I have is down to period or a UTI?? Period arrived 7 days early and its a heavy one.

Freaked out that I should be taking Macrobid as opposed to cranberry pills.

Urine does not seem to have any odour and isn't cloudy.

Paranoid at the moment :0(

Day 29 isn't so late really.  Since I've been tapering I've had periods arrive both a week late and a week early.  Such a pain, but you will be okay.

2010  Fluoxetine 20mg.  2011  Escitalopram 20mg.  2013 Tapered badly and destabilised CNS.  Effexor 150mg.

2015 Begin using info at SurvivingAntidepressants.  Cut 10% - bad w/d 2 months, held 1 month.

Micro-tapering: four weekly 0.4% cuts, hold 4 weeks (struggling with symptoms).

8 month hold.

2017 Micro-tapering: four weekly 1% cuts, hold 4 weeks (symptoms almost non-existent).

2020 Still micro-tapering. Just over 2/3 of the way off effexor. Minimal symptoms, - and sleeping well.
Supplements: Fish oil, vitamin C, iron, oat-straw tea, nettle tea.

2023 December - Now on 5 micro-beads Effexor. Minimal symptoms but much more time needed between drops. Symptoms begin to increase.

2024 April - Updosed to 6 microbeads - immediate increase in symptoms for 4 days. Decreased to 5 microbeads.

Thank you KarenB - I have to eat humble pie now as it arrived this morning.

See my update on Intro page.  The awful thing about WD is the potential to end up crying wolf (which I don't want to do) when things don't seem right or feel right.

The issues are therefore more in my head than anything being actually physically wrong.

NOTE TO SELF: Work on CBT stuff and self-talk........

On a more positive note I am hoping to do some volunteering in our local country park - its absolutely beautiful up there and will be great to focus on something else other than all the worries we have (no jobs, unsold house, parents etc.,).
