I’m looking over my notes and wondering if I still might be allergic to the mirtazapine in my system because of the histamine. I’m very sensitive to things that cause allergies, scents, food etc. But have become more so since starting the mirtazapine. The breathing, itchiness, upset stomach, is that the withdrawal or an allergic reaction. This morning i feel itchy all over and feel panicky. The change in diet, even for a couple days, has felt better. Could I taper a bit more?

hi manymoretodays., I read this on freespirits signature post and was able to relate to their histamine problems. I’m wondering since I’m at 1.8 ML. If I could taper down quicker because I’m having issues with histamine. My weight is dropping and every time I eat my stomach hurts. I’m trying to keep a diary as to what I can and can’t eat in my can eat the list is pretty small. I noticed free spirit was able to taper quickly off their mirtazapine and maybe some of my symptoms are from the histamine.Just wondering what you think. Thanks for your time.

Hi sweetie,

We're thinking on it all Pens.  Wondering about the allergic factor too.

Really proud of you too, for trying hard to stay with stability now.  Given the rock and roll nature of 2019, drugs and WD's.

Thank you for keeping the notes coming too!

I’m a Little better today as far as breathing goes. And my throat doesn’t feel as swollen. I’m eating cleaner even if it only has been for two days and I don’t feel as tense. Really think I’m having issues with the histamine. Breathing has improved. My stomach feels sore and tender.Went over some of the symptoms to histamine intolerance and a lot of them apply to me. So I am wondering if I could Taper down a bit more off the mirtazapine I’ll leave that with you. Thanks for getting back to me and for the support.

Hi Pens,

Yes.  Some of that morning dread so to speak may linger.  I try to do some things, even now, this far out from all my drugs, that help with that.  And of course, keep in mind that you are more in the acute phase of WD syndrome than I am, right now.  I try and do some writing, journaling, and get it all on paper and out of me.......kind of prayer fully, if you will.

Writing therapy

And oh music, just listening to pleasant sounds:

Music therapy/music for wellness and healing

Good old gratitude lists too, on paper, or in my head.  Sometimes I just wiggle my toes and think....."well wow, I have toes, and a fully functional body and isn't that great?!"

Anything to help shift ones' thoughts and perspective......or distract from a negative pattern........can and will eventually help with healing and recovery.

And okay, you are at 1.7 mL now of your mirtazapine?  Which is the same as 1.7 mg?  Is this correct?  You have a 1mg/1mL solution?

I think, if I were you, that I might try a small taper now.

1.7 mg/mL X .90 = 1.53 mg/mL  and that represents the dose, after calculating a 10% taper from your present dose

If it were me, I think I would want to go down now, even less than 10%, and just watch, observe, keep notes, see how it goes.

1.6 mg/mL represents a 6% drop or taper from 1.7 mg/mL.  That might be a good place to begin a cautious taper.  You could even do 1.64 mL if you want to proceed even more cautiously.

Do you want to give that a trial now?....... and if so, do continue with the daily drug and symptom notes, as well.  This not only benefits us, but should help you to get a feel for when you might get some WD, after each taper and then when it all re-stabilizes again.

Do try and HOLD with it too.  The changes after tapering most often don't even get felt, or registered for a week.  And then let's see how you settle in, before any further changes.

What do you think?

Best, L, P, H, and G,

mmt

I meant to type 1.8 ml. Instead of 1.7 ml. Mirtazapine. So would that be 1.62 ml.

Okay 1.8 mg and you are using a solution of 15 mg/15 mL or 1/1.

1.8 X .90 = 1.62 mg with a 10% taper

I think you changed it in your signature, that's where I saw the 1.7 mL listed.

And again, you could do less than 10% too.

1.8 X .95 = 1.71 mg/mL   that would be 5%

Just make sure you HOLD for at least 2 weeks, whichever you decide on, and keep the notes,  and get a feel for how a reduction goes with this one.

Hey Pens, I too was on mirtazapine. I know how the itchy histamine feels. It can be pretty bad. Hang in there it will go away. I quit Mirt on the 30th of november and I still had the itches for at least a month after.  It's worth it if you can wait and be stable when you are tapering. I wish I tapered. Thankyou Nm190, not that I wish any of these symptoms on anyone but it’s.good to hear from someone who is having a similar experience. Then I know why this is happening. My sleep isn’t very good either. Sometimes you just want to stop taking it altogether but of course I’ll taper. I wish you the best with your success on quitting. Take care.

Hi Pens,

Looks good enough for day 5-6 now, since your taper.

And yes, the sensitivities can be tough to deal with.......lights, too much stimuli, etc.

So glad to see you are getting at least 5 hours, some nights.

And a nice reprieve of WD symptoms in the evenings.

It appears you are doing a great job too, with your food diaries and/or tracking sensitivities to food.

Thankyou Ryder, I have started reading books and knitting and staying off the computer. Sorry to hear you’re having trouble sleeping as well. Thank you for your support. Never thought that Sleep could be so important to your health. Have a good day!

p.s. are you safe from fires?  We’re all keeping you in our prayers up here in Canada.

I live in an area which is away from most of the fires. I have had somedays difficulty breathing and this makes my anxiety bearable because i know it is from the smoke and ash that has fallen on the cars in my area. Even one day i went swimming in the ocean lane pool, and instead of seaweed the water was covered in ash from up the coast. So i consider myself lucky as it could be alot worse.

P.s i wish i could knit though it sounds like something good that people do & you have taken up.

Dear Ryder, i’m so glad to hear that you’re not close to the fires. I can’t imagine what the air would be like even from a distance. It must be nice to live beside the ocean. I had a chance to swim in it once and it felt funny to be able to float on top of the water with Little effort. Do you ever get to see any whales? We are having a mild winter this year in Canada. My husband put up a couple birdfeeders and every day we get to watch them. They can get pretty bossy with each other sometimes. LOL. Hope you have a good day today. Take care.  ☺️💐 Pens

I don’t know what to do. I’m getting about four hours sleep. The mornings are horrible I’m shaking cold very dizzy, agitated. I don’t know if I should reinstate on the mirtazapine. I could take some Zoplicone but I don’t want to take any more prescriptions. I tried the sleep exercises.  My mornings have been really off the last few weeks to the point where I can’t function. Evenings are good but I’m having difficulty until about three or four in the afternoon.

Hi Pens,

I don't know that your sleep was improved on the higher doses, or when you tried to updose?

What do you think?

These may be WD symptoms now too. January 11th you made the taper.  So you are just a bit over 3 weeks since then now.  I'm hoping you settle into some WD stability now.

Are you able to get a consistent dose now of the 1.6 mL, which is equivalent to 1.6 mg?

Might have done a bit too much of a percentage with your last taper too?  On January 1, you were at 1.9 mg and then on January 11, you went all the way to 1.6 mg.  That alone represents a 16% drop from the 1.9 mg dose.  So it may be that things will settle a bit, and then in another month, or even more, we can calculate a lesser percentage drop/taper, and things may go smoother.

Looking back, I'm seeing some okay days.......in the last 3 weeks.

And oooh (((((Pens)))).  Let me know how the rest of today goes please.  Thank you.

Thankyou for getting back to me so quickly. Can I try a very small amount Of Zoplicone  tonight to get some sleep. I’m at the point where I feel like I’m going to pass out. I’m not one to abuse sleeping  pills I could sure use one night of good sleep. What do you think. I Will be picking up a syringe that measures less than 1 ml. In smaller increments. Please Correct me if I’m wrong but I think I have January 11 at 1.8 ml.and then January 26 at 1.6 ml. I’m sorry I’m not thinking very clearly but just wanted to mention that. I will try and make my notes a little more clear. If you recognize these as WD symptoms then I won’t be so worried. I don’t know what to expect, you do. 💐

My point was more in regard to the whole month of January overall.

Yes, WD symptoms I think, since the taper to the 1.6 mg/mL dose, on January 26th.  Most definitely ramping up your fears/anxiety around it all right now.  And then with your case, we do have the pre-existing conditions too, for you to continue to manage alongside of the WD.  Many without asthma or COPD do get the chest discomforts and sometimes feeling short of breath when anxious, as a WD symptom.

^, in your own words.  So maybe tonight will go better.  Try some relaxation exercises, maybe a bath even.......listening to calming, soothing videos or audios.  Those can be found in non-drug coping.

Oh, Pens, continuing insomnia, or decreased sleep CAN be really tough and amplify symptoms too.  Here's some of Alto's best on sleep hygiene for you to look over:

Pens, have you tried any magnesium, or....... melatonin in the tablet form yet?  Do review those topics and only start one or another, at a low dose too, so you can get a feel for them, slooowly.  One or the other might help.

Okay.......and hoping you get more rest tonight and comfort.

Do you eat rye bread often? Are you on a histamine intolerance diet or an exclusion diet?

When does the itching start?

I have been Eating Ryebread, a slice a day, for the past three days because I thought It might be better than whole wheat. I stopped using Salbutamol inhaler after you showed me the side effects, itching being one of them, and it has let up considerably. Though sometimes it does start for no reason that I know of except that maybe it’s caused from histamine overload or just my body healing. I checked the list of histamine foods to stay away from and it pretty much leaves you with not much of a choice to eat. So I’m trying to just eat a balanced diet hoping that now that I’m  on a lower dose of mirtazapine it might help. I did try one spray of melatonin in my mouth but was very groggy the whole next day. Even though the one spray  equaled .25 mg. I’m normally sensitive to meds but have found while tapering I’m extremely sensitive to everything. 💐
