Hi,could you help me please?

I was on mirtazapine for 8 years.

15mg for 6,went into poop out and upped to 30 for 2.

Withdrew from the 30 over 5 month.30-22.5 for month,22.5-15 for a month,15-7.5 for a month then off.

No withdrawal at all.

Then 2.5 year later woke up with an extremely stiff neck then anxiety came.

Jumped back on 15mg hoping that would work, but felt like I was getting palpitations and had a bit of burning patches.

Felt like I was gradually worsening so came off without tapering as I was only on for 3 week.

Feeling gradually worse as no-one believes me and am expected to go back to work till time and look after my children and everything else.

Partner thinks it's an anxiety episode,I'm so confused.

Please don't tell me any bad news as I don't think I could bear it.

My system is hypersensitive now.Been completely off for 1 week.

Welcome to SA, Kree.

It is possible that you are experiencing delayed withdrawal from your fast taper of Mirtazapine.  While delayed onset withdrawal usually appears sooner than 2.5 years, there is much we don't know about these drugs and their effects.

What is withdrawal syndrome.

Daily Checklist of Antidepressant Withdrawal Symptoms (PDF)

It is also possible that the symptoms you're experiencing stem from an adverse reaction when you jumped back on 15mg.

The symptoms of an adverse reaction are similar to those of withdrawal.

When you say you are feeling gradually worse, could you expand a bit to describe your symptoms?

These techniques are helpful for coping with anxiety.

We don't recommend a lot of supplements on SA, as many members report being sensitive to them due to our over-reactive nervous systems, but two supplements that we do recommend are magnesium (glycinate is a good form) and omega 3 (fish oil). Many people find these to be calming to the nervous system.

Magnesium, nature's calcium channel blocker

Omega-3 fatty acids (fish oil)

Add in one at a time and at a low dose in case you do experience problems.

I'm feeling worse as in anxiety slowly creeping in,internal tremers, burning patches.

I obviously can't go back on as my body wasn't accepting it so don't know what to do.

I just stopped taking the mirt a week ago ct after 3 weeks. Is it possible the withdrawal will ease off after maybe a month and I won't get a protracted withdrawal,

My family don't believe me and think I'll bounce back after a few week as they believe it's my own anxiety.

Could it have been my own anxiety as it was 2.5 years off?

I can't go through protracted withdrawal,I just can't.

Could it be that I had an anxiety episode, went back on but wasn't enough dosage and didn't give it long enough to work?

And then only been on 3 weeks so the withdrawal that I'm getting shouldn't be terrible And will stop soon?

I have been getting small withdrawal for the past week since stopping.

Might I not get any further withdrawal?

There is no way to predict how long withdrawal will last.  I would hope for the best and that you'll improve within a short time.  Have you taken a look at the links I sent you on dealing with anxiety?  Also, be sure to read the links I sent you about magnesium and omegas.  These and the anxiety techniques can be really helpful.

Yes, that is possible.  If so, the links I mentioned above would be helpful to you.

Hi kree, I was just like this when I started on this site a year ago. I was too scared and didn’t read through advice because of panic. Please read through all the advice and links, it could really help you with sorting out your symptoms. Breathe and try to read. I’m not a moderator or doctor so I can’t advise but I can remember being where you are now. I didn’t read,  just panicked,  which really caused more issues. Hang on in there, help is here and you will get through this. The mods will help you work out how to get through with the least pain.

Hi Kree,

I do not want to say anything to confuse you. WD is a real phenomenon. Everything will be allright in the end. But you need time to settle down.

I am also a mirta victim. And the other poison tianeptine. Now I lead my life normally. I had times when I was suicidal, planning how to kill myself. I am saying again now I am ok....

Moderators will help you, I only have my own experiences. But there is no doubt about recovery. By time you will recover and will have a happy life again.

Please DO NOT EVER GIVE UP, TAKE CARE..

Hi,really scared here.

I was on mirtazapine for 8 year and successfully tapered down over 5 month 2.5 year ago with no withdrawal at all.

7 week ago I developed a stiff neck and anxiety came quickly after that so panicked and put myself back on 15mg mirtazapine.

Didn't feel any effect other than increased appetite and burning patches that would come and go.

Also joint pain and palps hnow and then.

I went to the docs and asked if I could stop taking it as it wasn't agreeing with me.Had only been 2.5 weeks.

Been off 1.5 weeks now and getting little bits of withdrawal. My system is also a bit hypersensitive.

I'm really worried as I have 2 children, job and a very busy life.

And my daughter's suffering with anxiety now worrying about me.

Surely I wouldn't have had a delayed withdrawal after 2.5 years?

I'm hoping I just had an anxiety episode, didn't give the mirtazapine long enough to work?

And now worried I'm going to get some horrendous withdrawal, which there is no chance I could cope with.

But I've been obsessed with this site so hoping I've convinced myself of something I'm not going to get.

As everyone around me keeps telling me.

Do you think I'll go ok with a little time and ive maybe overthought it all because ive convinced myself my life's ended as I've nowhere to turn.

Maybe it's reading other people stories that's made me think like this.

I'm predicting that's something's going to happen before it's happened.

Your anxiety started up for a reason, and now Your having a bit of WD or adverse reaction on top of it...

Did you have any major trauma or stressor in the past 6 months?

Accident, death in the family, or even a good stressor like getting married?

These are all things we can have a delayed reaction from.

It's hard to say how long it will take, since we don't know why the anxiety started up again.  Are You close to Peri menopause?

The problem with these meds is, you cant just hop on and off them for a little anxiety here or there.

Did a doctor prescribe it for you?  how did you get it?

If You have only been off for a week, what your feeling is normal.

If you were indeed having a bad reaction to the med, it will take some time to settle down again.

My grandma died 7 month ago.

The anxiety started after a stiff neck though.

Yeah my doctor prescribed them.

I've been off 2.5 weeks now and getting different withdrawal every day.

The problem is nobody believes me and expect me to carry on like nothings happened.

I didn't get any crazy anxiety when i went back on,just burnjng patches, twitching and muscle pain.

I'm convincing myself that I'm going to go into some terrible withdrawal by reading others stories.

If you could put in your signature line, when she died,

the dates your symptoms started, the dates you started the med and the symptoms the accompanied being on it, and when you went off,

And then keep a chart of what symptoms started when, it will be of more help.  it's impossible to have to keep re reading through your posts to piece things together.

For example, its not clear how much time elapsed from the re emergence of the anxiety until you started the med, etc.

And knowing exactly how long in between her death and the symptoms will help.

Everyone is different, don't scare yourself into a major event because of what may be a temporary glitch in the road.

One day at a time. 💝

But it's important to stay as calm as you can, and rest as much as possible.

The problem is I can't rest as my partner wants me back at work next week as he doesn't believe me.

And I've to see the mental health nurse in 5 days who will likely put me on something which will make it worse.

  • 1 month later...

Could someone please help me.

I took an adverse reaction to mirtazapine nearly 4 months ago and after struggling through off work I'm waiting for the horrible protracted withdrawal to appear.

My mum contacted the mental health team at the hospital and they now come out every day to see me.

They dobt believe I've had a reaction,i think they think i have a serious mental health condition.

I am now on amitriptyline the last week 10mg,they now want me to raise to 20mg.

Is there a chance it could work as i have 2 children to be here for and im expected back at work soon.

I had to put my partner out as he was making out it was all in my head.

Also sajd to my mum if she could look after my kids if i wasn't able.

She told the hospital i was forward planning for someone to look after them which sounds bad.

So they'll be around until I'm better she says.

Could i get better with the ami?

The psychiatrist wants me on at least 75mg for depression.

But only anxious and depressed about what lay ahead with the adverse reaction.

I feel like if i decline with the reaction they'll have me in the hospital and my life will be in tatters.

Is it possible i will get better with the ami,i know drugs arent recommended on this site but this has been taken out my hands.

The twitching comes almost straight away.

I'd say my anxiety is getting worse, but not sure if its the mirt adverse reaction.

And doesn't make me tired.

How soon does twitching start after you take amitriptyline at 4:30 p.m.? What other symptoms appear at the same time? When do they go away?

What do you mean by "twitching"? In what part of your body does this occur?

The twitching starts about half an hour after.

No other symptoms appear until later.

The twitching is mainly in the legs and comes and goes throughout the day.

I wouldn't say i feel better.

I have the inner vibrations inside when in bed during the night, sweating and jaw/gum pain which have came back with this med.

My sleep is very broken but has been for 4 month.

Was saying to my mum and for months that im terrified from the phase 2 of protracted withdrawal.

Now intensive mental health team involved.

They said i needed something so i opted for amitriptyline as it isnt suppost to be as stimulating.

I've been going on and on about this phase 2 and is what im terrified from.Might it not come?

Everyone's saying if it happens it's a self fulfilling profecy.

I have to get back to work or I'll lose everything.

I'm in the worst nightmare.

What phase 2 are you talking about? What is your drug and withdrawal history? Have you been off amitriptyline for 4 months?

Did these symptoms appear when you first went off mirtazipine?

Do you have any mirtazipine left?

Post-acute withdrawal syndrome (PAWS) does not always include psychological symptoms. As you went off mirtazapine more than 8 weeks ago, you are already in PAWS.

Which drugs? You were taking mirtazapine for 8 years. Your symptoms started 8 years ago?

If you feel worse since taking amitriptyline, I would stop amitriptyline. As an adult, you can refuse drugs.

You also will need to get your family situation straightened out. Maybe tell all of them you'll make your own decisions?

You should be aware that if you complain to your family, they will do their best to help you. All they know how to do is call the mental health team. If you don't want to argue with your family and mental health team, stop asking them to help you. They don't know anything about psychiatric drug withdrawal syndrome.

Jumped back on 15mg hoping that would work, but felt like I was getting palpitations and had a bit of burning patches.

Felt like I was gradually worsening so came off without tapering as I was only on for 3 week.

You continued to take 15mg mirtazapine even though it gave you palpitations and burning patches? Did it help you sleep?

If so, 15mg was too much for you. Your nervous system probably has been sensitized by cold turkey. After you go off amitriptyline, I'd wait a week and reinstate 1mg mirtazapine. We often see that a very small amount will reduce withdrawal symptoms.

Do you have any mirtazapine left? If not, that is something you can ask from the mental health team. They will be delighted to prescribe it for you.

So if ive had an adverse reaction i might not get the psychological symptoms later on?

I had an adverse reaction to the mirt.

No the problem started 2-5 year off mirt.Restarted and i got the reaction.

The mental health team think theres something serious going on like delusions and stuff i think.

So they wont let me out of their care until I'm better.

My family expect me to look after my kids,go to work and do everything I've always done.

They believe i need treated.

Not everyone gets psychological symptoms associated with withdrawal syndrome. An adverse reaction to a psychiatric drug shakes your nervous system up. You may or may not get psychological symptoms.

If you have psychological symptoms, they may or may not be influenced by withdrawal symptoms. You may be feeling bad about a stressful situation.

You had an adverse reaction to mirtazapine when you started it 8 years ago?

You went off mirtazapine, and then you went back on 15mg 2.5 years later. You had an adverse reaction. We don't know why. Somehow you became sensitive to psychoactive drugs; 15mg mirtazapine was too strong for you. Have you taken other psychoactive drugs? Do you drink alcohol?

We cannot intercede with the mental health team or your family. If you don't want them to make decisions for you, you need to make that clear to them. See

How to talk to a doctor about tapering and withdrawal? What to expect?

It sounds like your family situation is a source of great stress for you. You might want to participate in discussions in our Relationships forum.

I took the speed 4 days before i went on mirtazapine. But had anxiety before that.

Alto....no i didnt have an adverse reaction to it 8 years ago, only when i restarted it 2 and a half year after i stopped.Think it was some sort of delayed withdrawal?

I am carrying on with the ami even though im not reacting with it well as i need to get back to work and look after my kids and house.

No-one believes I've took an adverse reaction, they believe I'm delusional and just need treated.

No, I don't think it was delayed withdrawal, I think your nervous system may be sensitized, possibly from intermittent use of psychotropics such as amphetamines, and you reacted badly to a dosage that was too high, stayed on it, and now you have withdrawal syndrome.

How are you feeling now, on 10mg amitriptyline? If you don't feel it's helping, I would not increase to 20mg.

As @FindRest so perceptively noted, use of speed or even caffeine may contribute to anxiety and sleeplessness.

I had an intense anxiety episode which came out the blue with a really stiff neck which i couldnt move.

Then few days later u took quite alot of speed.. then went back on mirt 15mg after a 2 and a half year break for 3 week.

Got burning and twitching and what i think is perifial nerve damage.

So you think its just withdrawl from the mirt?
