Addiction can also develop. There has been at least one case reported of a person developing withdrawal symptoms after suddenly stopping valerian. This occurred in a person who had used valerian for a long time. The symptoms in this person were very similar to those observed in people withdrawing from prescription sleep medication.  Based on the available research and the case report of valerian withdrawal, it seems possible that valerian can create physical dependence. If you are concerned that you have symptoms of physical dependence or addiction associated with valerian, talk to your doctor about other treatment options.

I would consult with your doctor and-or the company who sold you the product. Since it is known to have a  "habit forming" warning, the company selling it should may be able to better assist you.

As a Peer support site for coming off of prescription drugs this really isn't our field.

I would try your doctor first.

Good luck and feel better soon!

Hello, I need guidance. I wish I knew or I was warned about cipro while in wd. I wrote I have ramp up in symptoms but i was suggested to continue taking pills from this site. Anyway things progressed to worse and I am non functional now. Paxil is no longer working and feels like in acute wd. What to do now? Would briging to prozac make things worse or what to do ? I am on 4.9 mg paxil since January. @Gridley @Altostrata @manymoretodays @Shep @brassmonkey

I am sorry Cipro treatment had this affect on you.

I wish I knew or I was warned about cipro while in wd.

Please explain what this means. Are you blaming us for your taking Cipro?

Discussion in this topic about Cipro goes back to February 17. You were already in the middle of a course of Cipro and feeling adverse effects combined with withdrawal. Our community members told you, correctly, to discuss adverse effects from Cipro with your doctor and that if you have a bacterial infection, it is important to finish the course of antibiotics.

We do not treat UTIs here. They are often treated with antibiotics. People already experiencing withdrawal often have a ramp up in withdrawal symptoms from antibiotics. You did not inquire about Cipro here prior to accepting a prescription for it from your doctor.

Cipro is rather notorious for adverse effects, which easily can be found in Google search.

How often have you taken Xanax since February 14?

What are the symptoms you attribute to severe withdrawal?

@Altostrata I had other antibiotics in wd and didn't have negative effect until now. I am blaming myself for not doing the research but this was adverse effect and I continued to poison my body untill more serious things showed up like neuropathy and vertigo. There is many stories that when people experienced adverse effect from Levaquin for example and stopped right away they were ok. I just wish this was recognized as adverse reaction and that i was adviced to stop. Anyway it is done and can't be changed now.

I am having strong suicidal thoughts, anxiety, depresion, insomnia, weight loss, dark thought about future. If you read my symptoms from last year after paxil ct they are the same. It really feels like paxil CT.I am in loss what to do. I waited 3 months and thighs continue to get worse. I am afraid of my own thoughts. I really need help from moderators what to do next. I am non functional and bedridden. One member Chicken after antibiotics fiasco bridged to other antidepressants and was fine and taper them later. What are your thoughts and what have you seen helps in this situation like mine ? @Gridley

@brassmonkey

I took Xanax maybe once or twice more in this 3 months. Don't know the dates.

I feel hopeless, I don't see the way out of this situation. :(

As I read your signature, you were taking 4.9mg Paxil when you had this bad reaction to Cipro.

I suppose you might increase the Paxil a little. I have no idea if this will address the symptoms that got worse after Cipro.

As you know, Paxil is a very difficult drug to go off. You have already experienced waves and windows, after you reinstated. The same gradual, frustrating recovery applies after a setback.

You also need to separate the feelings that arise from worrying about your condition from the condition itself. You have control over those worries. Your thoughts are just thoughts, you don't need to put them into action or even dwell on them. You are in the situation of someone with a chronic illness who is struggling to recover.

You might work with a therapist or other coach about managing the dark thoughts while you're going through this. We're just an Internet site, the staff doesn't have the training or ability to help you with this, it has to come from within you.

A book I used a lot throught my worst moments was: Get Out of Your Mind and Into Your Life by Steven Hayes.

I probably read it 3 times. It really helped how our thoughts work, what they mean, and how to move forward. The reason I read it so much is even though after the first read I logically knew everything, but in my unstable mental state reading it helped calm me down and provided relief. It was a form of meditation itself.

I am in no way affiliated with the book or its authors. I am sure others have books or audio books they used that helped them greatly. This just happened to be my favorite.

40 yo Male. Started Paxil about 15 years ago. 10 mg (pill weight .125 - .129 g). 5 yrs wanted less side effects, doctor took me off Paxil over couple week period and put me on Wellbutrin. Not good. Went back on Paxil. Relieved my symptoms, but didn't work as well and more side effects. Severe reaction between Paxil and Zomig Summer of 2012. Head was affected during warmer days (cloudiness, confusion, pressure). Began 10% withdrawal 10/24/12.

Withdrawel helped many symptoms, but also added side effects: nausea, dizziness, tiredness. Hyper-anxiety started January 2014.

Went through a 2 year period of de-realization (2016-2018).  Rarely any windows.
Current dose: 0.00 as of 4/10/21.  Made a lot of progress in my withdrawal symptoms the last 2 years of my taper.  I think doing a liquid taper helped stabilize things on the lower doses.  A lot of my symptoms have reduced significantly.  Hoping for even more improvement now that I am off.

Is adverse reaction to antibiotics same as adverse reaction to antidepressant? If i add something for sleep or change antidepressants can that help/ make it worse ?

Hi Melissa -- No they are not the same thing, but they do share many symptoms so they seem interrelated.  Adding more drugs to the mix will more than likely be adding fuel to the fire and cause more problems. At SA we are sympathetic to people how have been floxed, because we understand the symptoms that they are experiencing.

However, we are all about getting off of antidepressants and have very little practical experience in the field of recovery from being floxed. We have a number of members who have been though this experience and have recovered, but that is the extent of our experience. Therefore, we can't really make any recommendations on how to proceed, except for "ride it out".

I did a quick google and there are a huge number of resources available on line for getting information and support. Floxing appears to be a big problem with a lot of people documenting their experiences and working on ways of handling it. It is a very new field for posting so there are a lot of "horror stories" that need to be weeded through to get at the good information. I would suggest researching further on line.

20 years on Paxil starting at 20mg and working up to 40mg. Sept 2011 started 10% every 6 weeks taper (2.5% every week for 4 weeks then hold for 2 additional weeks), currently at 7.9mg. Oct 2011 CTed 15oz vodka a night, to only drinking 2 beers most nights, totally sober Feb 2013.

Since I wrote this I have continued to decrease my dose by 10% every 6 weeks (2.5% every week for 4 weeks and then hold for an additional 2 weeks). I added in an extra 6 week hold when I hit 10mg to let things settle out even more. When I hit 3mgpw it became hard to split the drop into 4 parts so I switched to dropping 1mgpw (pill weight) every week for 3 weeks and then holding for another 3 weeks.  The 3 + 3 schedule turned out to be too harsh so I cut back to dropping 1mgpw every 4 weeks which is working better.

Final Dose 0.016mg.     Current dose 0.000mg 04-15-2017

My apologies for the delay I have not been well.

You did inform me that from the time you started to have problems with the cipro, you stopped it and didn't finish the course, so whatever "advise" you thought you received from here about continuing to take it did not keep your from stopping early, which was good.  I did advise you that as soon as you had a med reaction to discuss changing with your doctor immediately. You wrote:

(Feb 24: I stopped it, i didn't take it full 10 days ,but 8 days.(

My personal reaction to cipro it was well before WD.

As I put in my pm, My symptoms were like:

". Made me autistic like. Could not process too much stimuli. Felt like bugs crawling on my skin and electrical shocks in hands and feet."

My other concern was the Valerian, and the info I listed here in your thread:

"The cipro and the valerian will cause problems.

I said you need to realize it will take months to stabilize from a cipro reaction.

Plus the Valerian may have made you worse, and the constant thinking about the problem."

I had cipro symptoms on and off for months.

It's hard to say how much the rest of the paxil wd and the valerian complicated things.

A red flag tells me the Valerian may be more to blame based on the timing than your recognizing but that's just a hunch.

I don't see your paxil reinstatement in your signature line, what you started at, any adjustment you made, etc. So I don't know if you reinstated to high in January and that played a part in all of this but without timely updated its difficult.

Why does you family want you in the hospital?

Can they "force" you?

My family will admit me to hospital. They didn't believe this is antibiotic. I am on thin line. Have you seen antibiotic setbacks and how long it takes to recover from it? Can I do anything to stabilise ,updose/take other drugs ? Or this will take years to subside ?

Again, i have the feeling the valerian did more than your appreciating, along with maybe too high a paxil reinstatment in January, but it's hard to say.  Then you had the xanax as well.

Have you tried or taken any other over the counter herbs meds?

Thanks

Melissa-- I am going to answer your PM here so you will have a more accessible record.

At the end of my taper, I was not able to continue using the Brassmonkey Slide method. I continued to dry cut, but the piles of powder were just too small to handle.

There are two options for the Endgame Taper: switching to a liquid is the recommended way because it is more accurate and controllable. Some people can't get the liquid or don't want the bother of making their own, for them Dry Cutting is the other option. Dry Cutting is not as accurate but can work well.

Here is an excerpt from something I'm working on that goes into detail of how to do the Endgame Taper via Dry Cutting.

DRY CUTTING METHOD

Starting with the smallest amount the scales can accurately weigh, 4mgpw, you will need to visually divide your pile of powder into eighths, or 12.5% portions. This will not be our 10% per month hyperbolic reduction, but it will have to do. First divide the 4mgpw powder into halves, then quarters, and then divide each quarter into 2 parts. You will have 8 piles.

Use a sharp object, like a razor blade or craft knife, to carefully divide the pile of powder into equal parts. As you’re working, you may wish to put each pile into a large gelatin capsule (size 00 works well) to preserve it.

Hold at each dose as required by listening to your body.

MONTH 1. For the first month’s reduction, you will take 7 of these piles each day, storing the 8th pile in a large gelatin capsule (size 00 or 000) to take later.

MONTH 2. The second month’s dose will be 6/8 of the 4MGPW powder, or 3/4. Divide your pile in half, and one of the halves in half again. That’s your ¾. Put the last ¼ into a gelatin capsule, label the container for use later.

MONTH 3. This dose will be 5/8 of the 4MGPW powder. Divide your pile in half, and one of the halves in half again, then divide each of the quarters into half, making 4 eighths. Take the half and one of the eighths as your daily dose. Save the other 3 eighths in gelatin capsules, keep them in a labeled container.

MONTH 4. This dose will be 4/8 or ½ of the 4MGPW powder. Divide your pile in half. One-half is your daily dose. Save the other half in a gelatin capsule in a labeled container to take the next day.

How do you feel? You have reduced to half the 4MGPW powder over 3 months. If you have withdrawal symptoms, stop here for a long hold, perhaps several months, before you taper slower.

To taper more slowly, divide the 4mgpw powder in half and each of the halves into 8 parts (each 1/16 or 6.25% of 4mgpw), following the same method as above. Taper using a similar stepwise method.
