Strange sensations while falling asleep -- surges, zaps, jerks

Hi @whatshappening

I read your posts above about energy surges as you're relaxing and trying to sleep and this sounds very similar to something I'm experiencing. I get a surge in the brain and chest that lasts only a second or two as I'm trying to fall asleep and, when I get this sensation, I'll usually have a night of total insomnia or very little sleep.

(Strangely, this is triggered even by gentle walking in the day or normal activities. Anything more than just being at home or in the garden seems to give me this weird surge like a 'blocking sensation' and no sleep.)

Anyway, I've struggled to find this described anywhere else but your description has some similarities. I'd be very grateful to learn how you're doing now and whether these surges have diminished or perhaps gone? Or did anything help you manage them?

I'm sort of 'waiting for them to pass' but as time goes on this gets harder and more worrying.

I hope to hear from you,

R

Hi @MaryMoo429 and @Patti2057

How are you? I was wondering if the surges when you were trying to sleep had improved at all? I have the same problem. When you had/have them, are you able to sleep after them?

@Ripley Hi. The sensation I have is like a startle and then I feel extreme anxiety in my stomach. It wakes me in the early morning and,  usually, I can’t fall back to sleep. I generally have no issues falling asleep when I go to bed at night.

How are you doing?

I have a solution gor those suffering from the surge of energy waking u up right at the moment of transition to sleep.

2015 september zoloft (20 mg updosed to 125) plus clonazepam for anxiety and panic attacks

2016 Jan replaced clonazepam with chlorodiazpoxide 20 mg

2016 April cold turkeyed both after a urinary retention surgery with no withdrawal symtom at all (still bizzare to me how!!!)

2018 Jan perscribed Nortriptyline 10 mg for vestibular vertigo

2018 Feb due to the horrible side effects which my psychiatrist took for depression and anxiety, Nortriptyline began to be updosed to reach 100 in June

2018 Oct noticed I was experiencing no pleasure in life and decided to taper(zombie-style kind of life)

Tapered to fast to reach 50 mg in 2019 Feb

Terrible withdrawal symtoms began to creep up, had to updose to 75 in June 2019

Began make changes in diet and lifestyle and tapered again to reach 30 by 2020 Jan (only in the middle of this taper did I become familiar with the golden formula of Brassmonkey slide taper ten perecnt each month and I'm forever thankful)

By May 2020 reached 22.5 when my whole taper process hit the wall due to infection to God-damned Covid 19

Late Sep 2020 restarted my taper process using the Brassmonkey 10 percent method and reached 16 mg Jan 20 2020 when I'm writing this now

I have something similar.  I have had them twice during my taper.  When I am falling asleep but seem to be still awake I get extreme chest pain and extreme panic.  I tell myself to get up, your having a heart attack.  As soon as I fully wake up, a matter of a few seconds, the chest pain is completely gone and the panic immediately begins to dissipate.  It’s very similar to waking from a nightmare but not actually being asleep.  It feels incredibly real up until I sit up for a half a second.  Luckily, it hasn’t caused many issues for getting to sleep or back to sleep. It has been helpful to tell myself, and believe it for that matter, that this is withdrawal related and not dangerous.  Sometimes I will drink a cup of chamomile tea before bed to ward off these experiences but can’t say for sure if it works at all.

2002-2011: Prozac, Lexapro, Xanax

2011-2018: Pristiq 100mg.  Anxiety well controlled, few side effects.  Life is good.

2019: anxiety hits an all time high. Tried to cross taper Prozac and Pristiq but was not successful.  Took Klonopin and had a hard time coming off.

2020: Pristiq 100mg maintained.  Took Gabapentin for 3 months for herniated disc.  Had a hard time coming off of it and tapered for 9 months finally being free in November 2020.

January 2021: 50mg Pristiq to 43.75.

February 2021: 37.5 using 25mg and half of a 25mg.  Going to start compounding with next drop shortly to go slower.

March 2021: holding at 37.5mg.  Will attempt to reduce by 10% in late March (about 6 weeks from previous drop if things are going well).  Dropped mid-March to 31.25mg.  Felt better in 2-3 days after, then increased symptoms starting day 5.
April 2021: 25mg.  Felt the best so far during taper, perhaps due to whole dose being a whole pill and keeping things steady.

May 2021: 18.75 to 12.5.
