Vicky: long term Paxil withdrawal

Vicky

Recommended Posts

I have been on paxil 40mg for 30years.   I stayed on so long because I figured why come off if I felt good.   However I finally realized I just learned how to deal with my anxiety better and I want to come off.   With microdosing like 2mg every other week Im finally at 20mg and have stayed there for a few months now.   The brain fog and horrible depression are now kicking in.   I never had depression before.   Does anyone know if this is normal.   I really dont want to get on another medication if I can wait it out.   Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome to SA, Vicky.

The fact that you're having withdrawal symptoms (brain fog and depression are typical withdrawal symptoms) indicates you've been tapering too fast.  Sometimes with a too fast taper, withdrawal symptoms can build up over time and then hit.

What is withdrawal syndrome.

Daily Checklist of Antidepressant Withdrawal Symptoms (PDF)

When we take psychiatric medications, the CNS (central nervous system) responds by making changes over the months and years we take the drug(s). When the medication is discontinued, the CNS has to undo all the changes it made. Rebuilding the neurotransmitter production and reactivating the receptor and transporter cells takes time -- during that rebuilding process symptoms occur.

Could you please give me your taper schedule, with dosages and dates, and also tell me when the symptoms started?  You're wise to hold where you are, and I would continue to hold until I can get your tapering information and can see whether a small updose would be helpful.

We don't recommend a lot of supplements on SA, as many members report being sensitive to them due to our over-reactive nervous systems, but two supplements that we do recommend are magnesium and omega 3 (fish oil). Many people find these to be calming to the nervous system.

Magnesium, nature's calcium channel blocker

Omega-3 fatty acids (fish oil)

Add in one at a time and at a low dose in case you do experience problems.
