Go2zero: getting off Wellbutrin and Prozac

@brassmonkey

17 days ago (March 12) I went down 10% from 0,47mg to 0,425 mg Prozac. At the moment I went down, I still had some WD effects from the last drop in dosage 4 weeks before (February 12).

2 days after the last dosage drop in March (so 15 days ago on March 14) I started feeling better. And I had a long window of approximately 12 days. Really feeling good. Then 2 days ago (march 27) I started getting WD effects again. Extremely tired, depressed, heath palpitations, burning skin on the inside, headache, nausea, concentration problems and worrying/ruminating. Typical WD as I know it.

I think the period of 12 days feeling good could be explained by the long half life of Prozac. After a dosage drop it takes about 2 weeks before the drop in dosage is felt, is my assumption.

But it seems that I start feeling better shortly (2-3 days) after a dosage drop. I have noticed that more often last year. I am not sure if this feeling better comes as a result from the dosage drop itself, or that the WD effects of the former dosage drop (4 weeks earlier) suddenly disappeared.

Here are my questions:

1) Is it possible or a known fact, that one starts feeling better shortly after a dosage drop as a direct effect of this dosage drop?

I have the impression that WD effects stay, also when I make longer holds of 5-6 weeks. But as said, it seems that a new dosage drop, then suddenly gives relief for approximately 12 days. And then WD effects come back again.

2) Is it safe to do what I am doing? i.e Going further down in dosage while still having WD effects from the last dosage drop?

I would hold for a while and let things settle out. You are firmly in the Endgame Taper now so it is time to really listen to your body and follow its dictates. The steady 10% a month earlier this yea

Your signature says you are still taking 33,3mg of Wellbutrin. This is going to have an affect on the symptoms that your feel from the prozac taper, so things won't be really clean cut.

At 0,425mg of prozac you are well into the Endgame Taper. This is going to be different from a regular taper. For one the small changes will be much harder to measure and the effect of each reduction will be more unpredictable. From here on down to "0" there is on schedule, each reduction is driven by how your body is reacting. It will be best to hold at each dosage lever until the symptoms are fully stable before making the next reduction and if things get too bad a slight updose may be needed. The pattern symptoms follow after a reduction can be very unpredictable, what happens with one reduction may not be the pattern for the next and will vary greatly from person to person. That is why listening to your body is so important, and not rushing things.

20 years on Paxil starting at 20mg and working up to 40mg. Sept 2011 started 10% every 6 weeks taper (2.5% every week for 4 weeks then hold for 2 additional weeks), currently at 7.9mg. Oct 2011 CTed 15oz vodka a night, to only drinking 2 beers most nights, totally sober Feb 2013.

Since I wrote this I have continued to decrease my dose by 10% every 6 weeks (2.5% every week for 4 weeks and then hold for an additional 2 weeks). I added in an extra 6 week hold when I hit 10mg to let things settle out even more. When I hit 3mgpw it became hard to split the drop into 4 parts so I switched to dropping 1mgpw (pill weight) every week for 3 weeks and then holding for another 3 weeks.  The 3 + 3 schedule turned out to be too harsh so I cut back to dropping 1mgpw every 4 weeks which is working better.

Final Dose 0.016mg.     Current dose 0.000mg 04-15-2017

Since last taper (April 1) I am having differing withdrawal effects. As such nothing new, since this happens after nearly every taper. WD effects often start approximately 12 days after tapering.

Last week I went to my doctor for a small problem with my eye. He measured my blood pressure, which was way too high: 151-110. I measured it myself many times since then, at home.

The systolic pressure differs between 160 and 135. Most times the systolic is higher dan 145.

The diastolic pressure differs between 90 and 112. Most times it is around 100.

I am wondering if this can be a result of withdrawal of Prozac.

Last 10 days I have light heart palpitations now and then. I had this (more severe) before during WD and probably caused by WD. I had it medically checked some months ago, and the doctors did see the palpitations during the tests.  I was told that there is nothing wrong with my heart. When stabilizing longer on the last dosage of Prozac, the palpitations went away (slowly).

Another WD symptom I have more often after a taper, is the feeling that my skin in burning on the inside. Last 10 days I have this again. So I am definitively having WD effects since 10 days (also very tired, anxiety, depressed, some slight vision problems)

My blood pressure has been quite stable around 135-90 for several years.

Is it possible that blood pressure can raise during a period of WD and caused by the WD? If so, does it happen often? I am trying to find out what is causing it. I'd rather not take medication for lowering my blood pressure. This might give other side effects next to the WD effects of my AD's...

So I want to know if the high blood pressure could be caused by the WD of the AD's.

Some extra info: I do not smoke, I do not have overweight, I hardly drink alcohol (1-2 glasses per week maximum and often not at all).

I have been doing very little sport activities last year. I already started to walk every day now, since a couple of days. Here I really have to change and do daily exercising (which I will). The anxiety (caused by WD), might have a bad effect on blood pressure. I do meditate...

Wondering how your doctor appointment went. My blood pressure is also up. I am early in the withdrawal process and did a too fast taper.

2001 to 2011  - On & off primarily Lexapro 5 to 6 times (also tried Clexa, Wellbutrin, Effexor and Prozac)

09/2011 - Buspirone with Clonazapam to start, then weaned Clonazapam, didn't work

2012 to 2016 - On and Off Lexapro, 10 mg a few times

12/2017 - Lexapro increase to 15 mg

2018 - Added Buspar to mediate teeth grinding, didn't work, off then on Lexapro

01/2021 - Lexapro, 15 mg, bumpy increase

02/2021 - Cross taper off Lexapro to 100 mg Zoloft

03/27/2021 - Very short taper, 50 mg Zoloft for one week then stopped (was supposed to be cross tapering with Cymbalta)

2011 - current Xanax .5 mg PRN

Hydrochlorothiazide & Losartan for blood pressure

Hey Go2,

My blood pressure ended up skyrocketing on Lexapro after being on it for 4 years.  I never knew if Lexapro was the culprit or not but I always had my suspicions.

My blood pressure dropped significantly after coming off.  I'm sure if it can go one way it can go another way.

I don't know if the Paxil is the culprit but it's possible.

Med History

March 2014 - June 2014: Zoloft 100mg?

August 2014: Effexor for 3 days

August 2014 - October 2017: Lexapro 20mg, three month taper (jumped at 5mg)

January 2018 - August 2020: Reinstate Lexapro 20 mg, six month taper (jumped at 1mg)

August 2014 - December 2019: Klonopin from 1mg to 1.5mg, year long taper (jumped at .125mg)

Supplement: Magnesium

My doctor did not know if high blood pressure comes from WD of Prozac. I did't expect her to know to be honest. I was hoping however to get some answers from members of SA, before I was going to my doctor. I would like to know if high pressure can be caused from WD from AD's. The answer could have helped in deciding what to do about the high bloodpressure.

The following link details several members' experiences with SSRI's and high blood pressure.  The upshot seems to be that high blood pressure can indeed be caused by the drugs themselves and also by withdrawal from these drugs.

At 0,425mg of prozac you are well into the Endgame Taper. This is going to be different from a regular taper. From here on down to "0" there is on schedule, each reduction is driven by how your body is reacting. It will be best to hold at each dosage lever until the symptoms are fully stable before making the next reduction and if things get too bad a slight updose may be needed. That is why listening to your body is so important, and not rushing things.

My last reduction was 4 weeks ago and I am having a lot WD effects since 2 weeks. Every day different effects; extreme headaches (migraine), fatigue, blurred vision problems which come and go, anxiety, heart palpitations, lots of neuro emotions. Burning inside skin when waking up. Waking up earlier and earlier (now 4.30). This early waking up is a alarming factor to me. From earlier WD attempts I know that this can be the start of heavy insomnia, resulting in DP/DR and even psychosis (which I experienced when jumping to zero from a low but still too high dose.

I decided to have a longer hold, until I get stable again and sleep better again.

The following link details several members' experiences with SSRI's and high blood pressure.  The upshot seems to be that high blood pressure can indeed be caused by the drugs themselves and also by withdrawal from these drugs.

Thanks a lot for this Gridley. This is very clear.

My stress levels are quite high due to WD. After reading the post you shared it is quit clear to me that my HBP might be caused by WD. I do not want to take meds for the HBP. My doctor said that the levels are not alarming high. Next time that I am in Holland I will do a 24 hours blood pressure test. An earlier 24 heart test proved more or less that my heart palpitations are also caused by WD!

I will exercise more, eat less salt and make a longer hold on my current dose of Prozac. Hope to get my blood pressure down in a natural and healthy way.

Today is 30 days after my last drop in dosage. Still at 0,37mg Prozac since April 1 (and 33,3 mg Wellbutrin, since more than 1 year not tapering).

Last 2-3 weeks were heavy. Quite extreme WD. Increasing insomnia, starting DR/DP, palpitations, high blood pressure, anxiety, ruminations, depressed feelings, blurred vision, tinnitus, migraine, extreme fatigue. All coming and going during last weeks.

Since yesterday things are moving in the other and good direction. Start to sleep better, more energy, better mood, feeling much better. DR/DR is gone again!

As said above, I will take a longer hold. But I want to use this hold to change to Prozac liquid. At a dose of 0,37mg and tapering towards 0,012mg it is getting more and more difficult to measure dosages on a scale. I will make the switch to Prozac Liquid in 4 steps. So 0.25 part liquid and 0.75 part powder from capsule. Every week 0,25 part shift towards liquid.

I bought oral syringes (1ml), Prozac Liquid, distilled water, and some small brown glass bottles.

I did the math and I would like to make a solution of 1:20. So 1 part Prozac Liquid and 19 parts distilled water. I am choosing for a 1:20 solution so that I am able to dose very accurate. I am thinking of using distilled water because I assume that the solution will stay fresh longer and more stable in that way.

I did quite some searching on the SA website, about the stability of Prozac Liquid diluted in water. But I could not find a clear answer. It differs between 4 and 14 days what I could find.

Could anyone please inform me how long a solution of 1:20 (Prozac Liquid Distilled water)  will be stable, when I keep it refrigerated?

Next to my question above, I have another question about Prozac Oral Solution. What is the shelf life when the bottle has been opened? I cannot find a clear answer. Only in information leaflet from UK I found something, saying : "Use within 1 month after opening". But is this really true?

https://www.medicines.org.uk/emc/files/pil.4564.pdf

I opened the bottle and took out 10ml which I put in a 10ml bottle. I will draw out 1 ml out of this 10ml bottle every 5 days probably. Depending on shelf life of own made solution diluted diluted in water.

So the 140ml factory bottle Prozac will be opened only every 50 days and I keep everything refrigerated.

This is a big problem with using commercially prepared liquids for a taper. Once the bottle is opened it needs to be used with in a reasonable length of time. Some medications will state how long while others won't. There are too many variables in the way people store their medications to be able to accurately say. In general the bottle should stay in good shape for the time it takes to us it all up at the recommended dose volume. If it is kept longer the medication will start to degrade and become less effective. Over time the affects of the medication will become less predictable and side effects and WD symptoms could increase quickly as the medication degrades.

If a person has been using the same bottle for many months and they are seeing an increase in they symptoms then it is past time to start a new bottle. If there are changes in the appearance or consistency of the liquid it should be discarded. If there are signs of mold or bacterial growth the liquid should be discarded. Just how long it will take for these problems to show up is any ones call as some bottles will last for months while others will spoil before you can use them up at full dose.

If the information available says to use within one month of opening, then I would be very careful about using it after that date.

Wouldn't it be better then to make my own liquid from Prozac capsules? Instead of making the change to Prozac Liquid. How many days can I keep a self made solution from capsules?

I mean to understand that making a solution from Prozac capsules works fine? Maybe better and cheaper then buying a new bottle of Prozac liquid every month... Is there a real advantage in using Factory made Liquid compared to self made from capsules?

I did some research tonight on the stability of Prozac Liquid. In most countries nothing is mentioned about a shorter shelf life after opening. Only the expiry date on the bottle is mentioned. In the UK, New Zealand and Australia is said that an opened bottle should be used within 1 month however.

On the other hand I found this research where is stated that even a 75% diluted solution (1mg per ml whereas the original liquid is 4mg per ml) was still stable after 4 weeks.

So it is all quite confusing to me what the real stability of Prozac Oral Solution is after opening the bottle and also after diluting it in distilled water.

Anyone some helpful information? I read so much about using liquids on this site. Hope someone know more in detail.

I forgot to paste the link of the mentioned research in my last post. Here it is.

https://academic.oup.com/ajhp/article-abstract/51/10/1342/5179591?redirectedFrom=PDF

So my questions are:

1) Is there any advantage in switching to Prozac Oral Solution? Or could I better make my own solution from capsules?

2) What is the stability of self made liquid from Prozac capsules. How many days will such a liquid be stable? I will work with deionized/distilled water. I am thinking of making a solution of 4 mg Prozac in 10ml water.

The lower I go in dosage I want to put 4 mg Prozac in 50 ml water. Does this have a negative effect on the stability. I mean to say, does the stability goes down when the prozac is diluted in 50 ml instead of 10ml?

Hope anyone can help me on this.

The cost factor is the big difference between commercial and homemade liquids. The other is that the commercial is more convenient to use. Some people find making the homemade liquid to be a chore. They both work pretty much the same. With the homemade you can control the amount that you make so there is much less wastage. We don't recommend keeping the homemade for more than four or five days. Diluting the tablets with more water does not affect the stability, it only changes the dose volume.

@brassmonkey

Thanks so much again. You are a great help!

I have been doing some testing today in making my own made liquid. I find it quite easy to do. So I might go that way.

The cost factor is not a big thing here in Spain. A 140ml Prozac Oral Solution costs US$ 15,- here.

Drugs are so much cheaper in Europe than in the USA. European countries do not accept the high drugs prices. So, "suddenly" Big Pharma lowers the prices to a fraction of the US prices.... To give an idea, a container of 30 pills original Wellbutrin costs only US$ 15,- here.... I am not sure if  it is true, but I heard of prices like $ 1500,- in the US for the same product.

If I would make my own liquid from Prozac capsules, would I still have to make the cross over? Starting with 25% liquid and 75% capsule powder and taking 25% more liquid (and 25% less powder) with each step? Or can I just go to 100% homemade liquid at once?

I understood that this crossover is recommended when switching from capsule powder to commercial liquid. But is it also recommended when switching to home made liquid (made from the same capsules)?

Doing a crossover would be a good idea. Some people can't tolerate the liquid form even if it's made from the same tablets they were using. Doesn't happen often, but as a precaution a crossover is a good idea.

Thanks again for the advice. I will do the crossover then. When I notice how extremely I can react on small dosage changes sometimes, I'd better go the safe way! 🙏

Not really. It seems like a 50/50 situation, about half the people have no problem at the lower doses while about half have symptoms all the way to "0". There does seem to be a correlation between speed of taper and size of reduction though, faster and larger tend to have more problems also people with a lot of reinstatements and updoses tend to have more problems. Keeping ones symptoms minimized and under control through out the taper and taking the time to let things stabilize with each reduction is the best way to reduce symptoms at the end of the taper. Anything that causes instability and increased sensitivity during a taper can cause increased problems at the end. This is one reason we stress going slowly and carefully at all times during a taper.

@brassmonkey

I have been stabilizing on 0,37mg Prozac since April 1 (so more than 100 days now).

On May 1 I started a cross over to Prozac liquid (own made of Prozac capsules). Since May 16 I am taking Prozac only liquid now, so I can dose even more accurate than before, using a 1 ml syringe.

I notice that I feel much more stable emotionally last weeks. Really big improvement there!!!

But I have been suffering from insomnia since the last reduction on April 1. I know from experience that insomnia is an alarm for me when in withdrawal. As soon as insomnia starts I know I need to stabilize. Until April this year, my sleep improved after stabilizing a couple of weeks and insomnia always disappeared again. But now the insomnia is there already for 3 months without improving.

My mood when waking up in the morning has improved quite a bit lately. I used to wake up with anxiety and sadness. These are hardly there anymore. But I do wake up very early and very tired and cannot sleep anymore then.

Another WD effect that I experienced only now and then since a year and which would disappear after stabilizing, also continues to be there for 3 months now. This is the feeling as if my skin in burning on the inside. I did some research on it and it might be paresthesia.

Further WD effects that are still there: Often very tired. This may be partly caused by insomnia, but I had it also often as WD effect when I was still sleeping good. And sometimes some vision problems as if there are clouds in my eyes when I am reading. This latter WD effect seems to be getting better lately.

I wonder what you advice me to do. Should I better continue to stabilize on the current dosage of 0,37mg Prozac until insomnia and paresthesia disappear? Or could I carefully continue the tapering process, using the Brassmonkey Slide method.

I would hold for a while and let things settle out. You are firmly in the Endgame Taper now so it is time to really listen to your body and follow its dictates. The steady 10% a month earlier this year may have been a bit fast. No problem, just take some time to let things catch up and stabilize. For the Endgame Taper you want to be a symptom free as possible after each reduction before you do the next one.

Hey there Go2zero,

You’re doing amazing! So glad to see that. I’m at 4.30mg now and I’ve been going really slowly. I have found that the holds are sooooo important.

Have a good day🤗

Been on antipsychotics, benzos, ADs and opiates for chronic pain.

Was cold turkeyed and put on and off lots of things. Was suicidal n ended up in a psych ward because of akathisia from WDs. Can’t remember what I was put on but when I was released still had severe akathisia n was suicidal again. Back to the ward and more meds. Tapered off one and have been trying to taper off Seroquel since. It’s been many years of tapering. .

Thanks @Carmie for your nice words! Yes the holds are extremely important I have learned. I could never have expected that WD can be so strong now and then at this extreme low dosages.

My insomnia Is improving last 2 weeks, vision problems also gone. Still having the burning pricking feeling in my under arms and lower legs, but this is also slowly getting less.

Last week lots of headaches and anxiety came up again. As we know  WD symptoms come and go and change after each other. So I will hold for some more time!

I see that you are also going steady down. Slow but steady! You will get there!

Wish you a great day! 🙏

Hi Carmie,

Thank you for asking! I have gotten in a wave some weeks ago. After being stable on only 0,36mg prozac for half a year and on 33mg Wellbutrin for 1 1/2 year.

Sleep is still very unstable. Last few weeks headaches, quite nervous, anxious and emotional. I started 2 weeks ago with acupuncture which seems to help. The paresthesia I was having for half a year disappeared within 2 weeks. So that is a great step!

Main symptoms are now insomnia (slowly improving), headaches, tinnitus, concentration problems, quite emotional (sad and anxious), nausea, light palpitations. All symptoms which are known to me and that come and go when I am in a wave.

Last few days were very heavy as for symptoms, today I am feeling better, but not really OK.

It is sometimes frustrating that this last part seems to be so difficult. Only 0,36 mg.... But it might take a year or more the way I am doing now to get away from it. But I only can accept it, that this is what it is. Better slow than creating serious WD problems through going too fast....

How are you doing with the seroquel tapering?

Glad to hear you’re feeling a little better today Go2zero, all we can do is take a day at a time and when it’s real bad an hour at a time or less.

It’s amazing that even at such a low dose as 0.36mg we still get bad waves. I won’t be jumping off until I’m down to 0.00something as I get such severe Akathisia if I taper too fast.

I’m down to 4.20mg now, and the way I’m going I’ll still be on them in a decade. I can only taper by such small amounts and I have to have really long holds.

I’m so glad that the acupuncture is helping a little. It always good to find something that works. I’m coping okay with the withdrawals at the moment, but I’m really struggling with other major health issues that are causing lots of stress and anxiety.

I’m struggling to breathe as my immune system is attacking my lungs and I have COPD. I just had a major flare up again after the first jab due to all the antibodies in my system. It’s going to get even worse when I get my second jab in a week and I’m really scared. I bought an oximeter to check by oxygen levels, they’re okay, but my bronchial tubes are inflamed and I’m so claustrophobic. I felt like I was going to suffocate the other day and nearly rang the hospital for them to check my oxygen levels, but bought an oximeter instead as that’s all the hospital did last time I went in.

Anyway, as I was saying one day at a time does it, one hour at a time and sometimes a minute at a time.

I’m glad your insomnia has improved a little and you’re managing to get more sleep🧡

I have been in a wave for a couple of weeks. Seems to be improving. Symptoms are coming and going faster. And also short windows come through.

I do however seem to have an inflammation in my jaw, in or near one or too teeth and maybe a breakthrough to my upper left sinus cavity. I spoke on the phone with a dentist and I will go there tomorrow.

He said that I will probably need to take antibiotics. Last time (2 1/2 years ago) I also had to take antibiotics (preventive) because of an implant put in my jaw. And it increased my withdrawal symptoms quite extreme then. I do have to say that I was tapering then in a faster way than now.

But my system is very sensitive lately. So I rather woud not take antibiotics. But maybe there is no alternative because of the inflammation in my jaw, sinus cavity or teeth root.

What can you say and advise about this. Is there an alternative or should I take the antibiotics and just hold a bit longer on my current dosages of prozac and wellbutrin?

If you have a proven infection then you will need to take antibiotics.  If it is only suspected that you have an infection you might be able to have a blood test to see if your body is fighting a bacterial infection.

It’s amazing that even at such a low dose as 0.36mg we still get bad waves. I won’t be jumping off until I’m down to 0.00something as I get such severe Akathisia if I taper too fast.

Hi Carmie,

Yes, these drugs are so strong. SERT (serotonin receptor blockage) is still 13,5% at this low dose op 0,36mg Prozac.... So that explains a lot that very small dosage changes still have a big effect on our nervous system. I also will not stop before I reached 0,01 mg....

Sorry to read that you have other health issues next to the withdrawal. Difficult decisions with the jabs. Especially when having underlying  health problems I understand that people take it. But on the other side there are the side effects with some who take it.

Looking neutral at the jab is the best I think, if one wants to take it. So trusting that everything will go OK....

Take Care and thanks again for you lovely words ❤️🙏

I am so sorry you have to deal with what sounds like a serious infection, @Go2zero Perhaps the dentist might have some suggestions about antibiotics? Please have proper treatment, it may not be as bad as you think.
