It's a purported to be a mood stabiliser at 5mg.  Overall it lowers serotonin IIRC.  I found everything is a bit dull and bland and monotone on this drug, not much in the way of highs and lows that I remember..  So that may be at least part of what you're describing.

If you're feeling really blue/down, I would seek a clinical psychologist to start working through it.  If they can support you through your taper later, even better.  If you don't like the first one you try, find another..until you're comfy with them and getting the support you need.

Hi hayduke

I have a new psychiatrist who seems alright. He supports tapering however he wants me to do it faster but I’m not willing to and I hope he’ll understand. I wish I could  go fast because I really want to be out of this drug but we know it’s not that easy.
I’m down on 4,3 mg at the moment. Having some withdrawal symptoms but manageable so far.
I feel generally low since on Olanzapine and I don’t know what to do about it. Maybe the doc knows? I’ll discuss it with him next time.

You’re doing really well with your taper. Congrats! It’s really good to see someone getting off the drug. I hope one day I can do it too.

Cheers Emily02.  No doubt there are a few good psychiatrists out there.  In my experience it's been psychologists who can actually help you sort stuff out 🙂

Hello Emily02, how I know what you are going through, When I had a psychotic break 17 years ago they started me on 5mg of Olanzapine, but then increased it to 40mg!!! I've spent the last 4 years reducing it. My troubles started at 10mg but below 5mg is where it got really hard for me. I'm currently about 6 weeks off it now. The insomnia is the absolute worst, there are thousands of insomniac stories on the Internet with respect to being trying to quit Olanzapine.

Stay strong and good luck!

2004 - 2020: Olanzapine 40mg for schizophrenia (Started to taper in 2016, completely off December 2020, still have withdrawals)

2004 - present: Lorazepam/Clonazepam 1mg as needed, rarely use them

2004 - 2017: Venlafaxine 75mg for depression

2008 - present: Metformin 2000mg for diabetes

2008 - 2013: Lipitor 40mg for high cholesterol

2008 - 2018: Bezalip 400mg for high triglycerides

2013 - present: Crestor 40mg, 20mg , 10mg and now 5mg for high cholesterol

2016 - present: Forxiga 10mg for diabetes

2019 - present: Lurasidone 60mg for schizophrenia

2020 - 2021: Various supplements (100mg 5-HTP, 100mg l-theanine, 500mg GABA, Jamieson Herbal Complex (Relax and Sleep), 500mg Vitamin C, 400 IU Vitamin D, 12.5mg Zinc picolinate , 5mg Melatonin, CalmAid, 10mg CBD, 100mg l-theanine)

2021 - present: Reinstated Olanzapine for sleep, stopped working after a month, no longer on it, still have brutal withdrawal insomnia. Stopped all previous supplements. For sleep I now use: 1 mg clonazepam, 3000mg glycine, 700mg l-theanine/day.

I've tried some other drugs short term but discontinued them early due to side effects. I can't remember all their names, antidepressants and antipsychotics, was only on them for a week or so.

Dealing with the insomnia is not easy. I have managed to get some sleep through combining supplements and over the counter antihistamines, Benadryl and Unisom (Doylamine Succinate), I found Unisom more effective with less side effects. They don't always work and when the do I only get a few hours a night, in the last 5 months the longest sleep I had from these was 6 hours and that only happened a few times, usually it is around 3 hours. Sometimes I get no sleep at all, the nights I don't sleep I just lay in bed with my eyes closed breathing trying to keep my mind calm and relax for 8 hours. Very occasionally, I take 1 mg or 1.5 mg of Lorazepam (Ativan) for a full 8 hours sleep, but I limit that to no more than once every 10 days because I don't want to become dependent on benzodiazepenes, I've read horror stories about benzo withdrawal, and I've been through enough. I have some sublingual Ambien 10mg on hand but I haven't tried it yet. I've read 5mg is a therapeutic dose so if I do decide to try it I will split the pill in half.

One thing I do drink that makes me feel better and alert during the day is Twinnings decaffeinated earl grey tea. Earl grey tea is just black tea with a citrus fruit added for flavor. Black tea contains an amino acid called l-theanine which puts you in a relaxed but alert state, it increases alpha waves in your brain. I drink several cups a day and I find it helps me feel better from lack of sleep once I get it into my system, plus I think it tastes absolutely amazing with some Splenda sweetener, i think the decaf tastes way better than the regular tea. They say coffee/caffeine keeps you awake but I find it just gives me the jitters and makes me feel worse after not sleeping so I avoid it. Decaffeinated tea has very little caffeine in it, apparently 98% of the caffeine is removed. I also take 10mg of CBD in the morning sublingually (with very very little or no THC in in), it helps relax me and I feel better throughout the day, some people claim CBD helps them sleep but I didn't find it helpful for that.

Some days are good and some are bad. I usually find mornings the hardest, but once 10-11am comes around and I have had a few cups of tea I start to feel better.

I also try to focus on different tasks, whatever they are, instead of obsessing over how tired I sometimes feel. I have found CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) has really helped me change my thought process for the better, to control what I think and how I think about and react to things. I took an outpatient CBT course at the local hospital. I've wanted to learn more so a while ago I bought a CBT course on udemy.com, when I bought it it was on sale for $13.99, now it's $200.00!!!! It's quite a long course and I am only at the beginning, it's teaching me how to become a practitioner of CBT, I have no interest in becoming a practitioner but I use the stuff I am learning on myself.

Thanks very much for your reply Bobblehead. I really appreciate it.
I will definitely try the decaff earl grey tea. I usually drink decaff coffee but I never knew decaff coffee has a substance in it which helps you feel better.

I also had CTB which helped me at the time. It’s really great that you actually enrolled for the course. I wish you success with it.

No problem. Search Google for l-theanine to learn more about it if you want too and how it effects alpha waves, and what alpha waves in your brain do. L-theanine can also be found in Green tea (Green tea and Black tea come from the same plant, the difference is how it is processed for consumption), however I can't find decaffeinated green tea so I don't drink it. Apparently l-theanine helps some people sleep better too although I don't find it helps me, but it doesn't hurt either, maybe you will have better luck. The thing I find with all these things that are suppose to help you sleep, various teas, supplements, melatonin, is that I don't think they are as effective on people withdrawing from Olanzapine because our sleep problems are not natural or due to things like stress, they are chemically induced which may make the insomnia worse than a regular person who is having a bout of insomnia.

The CBT course I signed up for is quite long, it goes into far more detail than the outpatient course I did at the hospital. It'll probably take me a month or two to get through it all, maybe longer, but I find it interesting so it gives me something to look forward too.

Melatonin is a hormone that sends your body the 'ni ni' signal.  I find it works well if I'm having trouble just dozing off.  But it won't keep me asleep if I'm anxious, churning or having other sleep disturbances - thankfully that's not common.  The tradeoff is that it doesn't give you a hangover.

L-theanine is great, I have 100mg capsules of it handy.  Good for anxiety from wds, I've found it helpful here and there when cutting down alcohol.  I don't take it that much but if it's that or a benzo, I'll try the L-theanine first!  Occasionally at bed time.  It doesn't have anything in particular to do with sleep, but it can relax me enough I'll just sleep if my body wants it.

I find the real L-theanine party trick is if I wake too early, 5 or 6 am and want a bit more sleep.  It seems that it quickly disperses morning cortisol spikes for me and maybe three times out of five I will get an hour or three more kip, love it.

Olanzapine wds definitely do lighten your sleep.  But I find melatonin and L-theanine do work as intended for me when it comes to sleep.  People often comment on my slow taper - but really I'm going as fast as I feel I sensibly can!  If I get less than 6hrs sleep a night for more than three nights, I need to hold.

Cheers

This l-theanine sound really good.

I tried melatonin once but I felt kind of a hangover the next day. Maybe it’s a coincidence. I might give it another try.

I started to drink decaff tea several times a day 😊

My low mood is at bay for now but my anxiety is pretty bad. My sleep is okay but a bit light.

Sometimes I can’t decide what I feel is side effect or withdrawal effect.

Tomorrow I’m having appointment with someone who is specialised in withdrawal from various drugs. He uses natural supplements and herbs. I’m quite excited about it.

Sometimes I think my life right now is just a bad dream and I want to wake up. But I’m absolutely grateful for my family and friends. I hope one day my brain will heal and I can be the cheerful, happy person I used to be.

After you talk to the specialist in withdrawal please share the supplements and herbs he tells you about. I'm interested to know if he recommends anything for sleep.

I don't experience hangovers from melatonin but I do experience hangovers from lorazepam, usually. As for melatonin I've noticed a difference between pills and gummies, for me gummies work better, I think its because they dissolve in your mouth as you chew them so you get a full hit of melatonin right away, with a pill it slowly dissolves in your stomach so it released slower into your system over time, perhaps that may be causing your hangover.

I found some decaf green tea yesterday at the grocery store so I bought it! If you can find decaf green tea it is considered to have a few more health benefits, but black tea is still pretty healthy too! (They come from the same plant, just processed differently) Green tea tastes different than black tea but I'm finding it nice to switch between the two, some variety. Both are high in l-theanine.

Hi @Emily02. I have read your thread. I too am trying to withdraw from olanzapine. I managed to get from 5 to 2.5mg last year but have hit an impasse. I recently tried to switch over to liquid but the insomnia was too bad even though I was still taking the full dose. Will hold for a couple of months and then try again.

I can totally relate to the feeling that you are not the same person on this drug. I used to be really enthusiastic about life and happy and motivated to do things. I find these days I just can’t be bothered to do stuff. It is much better at 2.5 though than it was at 5 so hopefully you will notice a difference as you get towards this level.

I hope you get some good suggestions from your alternative practitioner and you get some stuff to help with your symptoms. I am only taking magnesium and fish oil although I have some l- theanine that I haven’t tried yet which does seem to be helpful to a few people so maybe I should give it a go.

anyway good luck with your continued taper.

@BobbleheadYes, I will definitely let you know.

I’m really sorry about you suffering from insomnia. I know how it feels and I had a really bad patch of it when I reduced by 50%. Unfortunately had to reinstate. And who knows how many sleepless nights are ahead of me too.
I’m happy that you finally found decaff green tea. Do you drink it with honey or sugar?

@BadMedicine I haven’t been able to be at   2,5 yet. Before I made a 50%cut suggested by my prescriber and it didn’t work. Then I found this site and now I’m going really slow and hoping that I can make it this time. My first dream is to be able to be stable at 2,5.

It’s interesting, when I tried to switch to liquid, I had insomnia too so I gave it up.  Now I do dry cuts. I smash the tablet into power, I arrange it in a fine line and and I take away 5% using a ruler. It’s a bit fidgety but works for me so far.

Many thanks and good luck for you too.

Splenda sweetner. Olanzapine gave me diabetes so I can't have sugar or honey.

I haven't ruled out reinstating but I really don't want to. This Wednesday will be 7 weeks since my last dose. But I am tired and miserable at times.

I’m really sorry that you’re having a hard time. It must be really hard for you now. It’s a really big thing to be off this drug. I really understand why you don’t want to reinstate. I hope better days come soon.

Hi @Bobblehead

How are you?
I’ve just got my prescription from the naturopath and he advised me to use magnolia bark, chamomile and melissa for sleep. All of them in a tablet form. This should be used together for several months. He also sent me a deep relaxation scrip which I should listen to every day.

Other remedies he advised me to try was bioactive milk peptides, hops, holy basil, melatonin and the antihistamine drug Benadryl.

Hello, I'm not doing that good. I don't feel well from lack of sleep.

Thanks for letting me know, once you try them let me know if it works for you.

I've tried Benadryl but it gives me side effects so I can't use it. I've also tried Chamomile, melatonin and hops with minimal effect. I'll read up on the others, thanks for posting what he said.

I am very close to reinstating, today is 8 weeks without Olanzapine and things haven't gotten any better. I may do what you are doing and reinstate 5mg. I can't stand feeling the way I feel. The supplements I am on are getting low so I may save the money and stop buying them and just reinstate Olanzapine.

Good luck with these supplements, I hope they work out for you.

I’m really sorry to hear that you’re not feeling well. I understand that’s you’re thinking about reinstatement. Did you think of reinstating only 2,5mg?

The naturopath actually gave me a long list of herbs and supplements. He reckons they have the best effect altogether. I’m still thinking shall I follow his advice or not. But maybe I’ll give it a go.

Well the last time I could sleep and felt great was on 5mg but perhaps you are correct, if I do reinstate I'll start with 2.5mg, after 8 weeks off Olanzpaine my tolerance may be lower and a smaller dosage will work. I read a post on this forum about reinstating and it said to start low. My worry is that when I hit 2.5mg during my taper (6 months ago) that is when I started having real sleep problems, but I'll start low and see what happens. Thanks

I've been mixing supplements for a greater effect with so so results, but it is not consistent and I haven't slept for 8 hours in about 6 months.

Is the glycine powder still having the same effect of relaxation on you even now?

L theanine has not been good for me after trial and error , so stopping it.

Hi Venkat!

Last few days I didn’t take it as I was quite poorly. My tummy didn’t agree with anything.

I started it again today and no anxiety yet.

Have you tried taurin powder?

Hello everyone

I thought it’s time for an update.

So after finding this site I started small reductions from 5 mg November 2020. Now March 2021 I’m happy to say I’m on 3.5 mg Olanzapine.

It’s been one month that I’m taking the  large stack of herbs and supplements prescribed by the naturopath and I have to say I feel better. The horrible burning brain sensation is gone. My anxiety is completely gone for now. My sleep is not very good but ok. Last week I had some bad sleep and I started panicking that insomnia is going to hit me again badly. But last few days it started to settle. I get about 6 hours of mediocre sleep which is alright.

I have ups and downs. Most of the time I still feel very drugged and unable to think but I have some nice windows as well when I feel a bit sharper and occasionally started having some emotions as well.

I still tend to panic and catastrophise about my recovery and withdrawal.

I had ear ringing on and off for about a month which thanks God stopped.

I had the Covid as well.

I need to be stronger and braver to face tapering. I hope I will find my courage.

So that’s how things are at the moment.

Kind regards

Emily02

Can I suggest holding now till you are getting a good 6-7 hours a night?  Should steel your nerves for the next round.

Sounds like you are doing really well. That is a significant reduction that you have managed. Well done. And sounds like the withdrawal symptoms are reasonably manageable for you as well. This is a tough nut to crack and you are making steady progress. I agree with hayduke though that preserving sleep is very important and you should be mindful of this as you continue downwards with your taper.

Today my beautiful 3,5 year old son was diagnosed with autism. I feel devastated.

I need my brain back to be able to cope with life.

Hey Emily,

My son was diagnosed with epilepsy around the same age and it was very difficult for me.

My son has 2 friends who have autism who are now 12 and 13 and are extremely happy.

Your son will be happy.

Med History - 2014 - 2020 - Zoloft, Effexor, Klonopin, Lexapro, Buspar (No longer on any of these)

Went to my doctor for an annual and mentioned I was stressed, gave me Zoloft, stopped it after 3 months because it didn't do anything, ended up in withdrawal and was told I had a mental illness.  I've been diagnosed Bipolar and Clinically Depressed.

Current Med Taper

Lamotrigine - 25mg (May 21') -> 24mg (May 23') -> 23mg (July 23') -> 22mg (Aug 23') -> 21mg (Oct 23') -> 20mg (Dec 23')

Supplement: Magnesium, Fish Oil
