Hello Wantrelief

Saying bello and hoping your switch to the the new Citalopram has/is going smoothly.  Muddling through as best you can......

I'm on leave from work now, so have time to relax - I find relaxing so hard when it means not doing anything much but I have made myself a big sign which says "Celebrate having time to rest and relax".  It will be interesting to see how not having work stress affects me (I am practicing not thinking about the work ahead in the new year).  Will it relieve some of the symptoms?   Who knows.....

I've just managed to have a doze - not too toxic - and now I'm deciding whether to start some new knitting or watch a Netflix film.  Or do some colouring or have a go on the piano.  Anything to convince myself that I am on a relaxation retreat and not that I am held hostage by my symptoms - legs mainly.  Would be hard to go out now as the weather is quite warm and the sun is out and I get affected by it - end up with the shakes.

Hope I haven't blahhhhed on too much, just wanted to pop in and send you best wishes.  Friend-in-arms.

All the best

I like your idea of thinking of your time off as a "relaxation retreat" as a way not to feel like a hostage due to your symptoms.  I am very sorry your legs are acting up and that the weather has remained warm.  It sounds like you have some really good distractions, Neroli.  I wish I could join you at your retreat center and watch a film with you.  I do so hope that the time away from work (less stress) helps with your symptoms.  I am going to keep everything crossed that you get some relief during your holiday.

I continue to muddle along.  Tonight I am dropping another 2.5%.  I get so very anxious before these drops not knowing how it is going to go.  I was supposed to drop a couple of days ago but put it off as I was recovering from a rough hormonal time.  I think I am back to my baseline but it is sometimes hard to gauge as my baseline is not so great to begin with.  Sigh.

I am thinking about you, Neroli, and am very much hoping you experience some improvements during your holiday.  Lots of hugs - WR. 💗

Hello Wantrelief

Ah, yes, making drops - I, too, approach them with some trepidation now, after a year of experimenting with them.  I dropped 2.5mg on the Nortriptyline on 14 December (don't know about you but my calendar doesn't record social dates nowadays, it's all about dosages and symptoms!) - and I think I've had more SI, fatigue, anxiety and wobbliness.  My notes would indicate that could be the case but, to be honest, those things were there before and there could have been an increase in their potency, or I may be hyper-vigilant.  So hard to know.  A psychologist or Dr. may say "don't be so vigilant of your symptoms and reductions making things worse, your focus on this is likely to make things worse for you".  I understand why they might say it, such a focus on the "what's wrong" side of the equation, rather than on the "what's right" side but I would have to say to them, "well you try it, then come back and tell me how you got on, how you managed to find the best way to push forward with reduction without sending a sensitised CNS into a spin, how you dealt with the reduction symptoms".  I'm still rather peeved that Drs. Psychologist, Psychiatrists deny this horror-show/don't know what it entails and push the CBT-type "what is your thought, what is the worst that can happen, what evidence have you got of it happening, how can you think of it differently" stuff at you.  I honestly do get it conceptually but it makes me angry in practice.  They have NO IDEA what it's like to have to every day check in and see if it's a day when you can do the things you wanted (pretty small things in comparison to pre-drug) or, no, it's not going to happen or it could even make things worse.  Bit of a rant, there.  Had a bit of a go at a psychologist recently because I perceived she was saying I was letting my symptoms stop me from doing things and that I could work on doing more.  I got up, angry and in floods of tears, told her that I was angry and that if she was saying I wasn't trying hard enough, then she I needed her to know that for the last four to six years "I've been fighting f*****g hard".  Then left.  I've been back since and told her how I thought she's been looking from the deficiency model side of things.  Anyway, I don't think therapy is for me - but I am going to check In with her after the new year.  I know she means well - she's in the public service, so it's free, andI am so wary of the public service now.  Blimey, more rant.

Wouldn't it be lovely to have a day or so together, along with other select withdrawers, on a few days pampering retreat - great food prepared for us taking in to account all the GI issues, time out whenever needed, tele-transport to and from the destination so it cuts out all the anxiety and exhausting travel, and a bit of nature around to look at even if we weren't able to walk in it.  Ok, I'll try to imagine you sitting with me tomorrow.

I chose the knitting.  Glad I did, it's a new pattern and I had to have a few goes to get it right, which was a great distraction.  And I listened to Mad In America podcasts.  This one is one of my favourites - I know it's about Benzo-awareness but there's lots in it that translates/talks to the a-d issues too: https://jfmoore.libsyn.com/episode-45-world-benzodiazepine-awareness-day-2018-part-1

So, big hugs for the drop, hoping it's not too rattling.

x

Aw, thank you so very much @FarmGirlWorks and @Rosetta!!  I know I keep repeating myself but this experience tapering with a destabilized nervous system is very scary -- your support and encouragement really helps! Thank you for being there for me.  I just hope this all works out in the end.  I hope you both are coping as well as can be.  Lots of love - WR. 💖

Hi WR, I just read that you recently decreased 2.5% of your dose? Are you doing the Brass monkey taper?

How long have you been doing the smaller decreases? How long are you usually holding between drops?

I hope you're doing well.

Hi @jen84 - I am doing a sort of modified Brassmonkey taper.  I try to make 2.5% cuts twice a month to reach a total of 5% so the cuts are usually 2 weeks (sometimes I think they have been 3 weeks) apart.  I then hold for 3 weeks. I hope you are doing well - WR.

-1/06 - 3/07 Cymbalta. Fast taper (essentially CT); withdrawal symptoms after 4 mos (didn't realize was WD)

-10/07: 100 mg Zoloft; 1 mg Klonopin - tapered off Klonopin after 4 mos. Several unsuccessful slow tapers of Zoloft; went up and down in dose a lot

-Spring 2013 back on 1 mg Klonopin to counter WD symptoms; switched over 5-6 mos from Zoloft to 35 mg citalopram
-Two attempts at slow tapering citalopram, always increased dose due to WD; also increased Klonopin to 1.25 mg in 2014, then to 1.5 mg in 2015

-8/17-9/17: After holding one year at 20 mg, feeling withdrawal symptoms due to stress - slowly increased to 25 mg. No change in symptoms after 6 months (? tolerance ?)  - decided to start citalopram taper February 2018 (still on Klonopin 1.5 mg).

Supplements: fish oil; magnesium; vitamin D3; curcumin

Citalopram taper:  2/2018 - 12/2019: 25 mg - 11.03 mg I 2020: 10.89 mg - 7.9 mg I 2021: 7.8 mg - 5.26 mg I 2022: 5.2 mg - 3.36 mg I 2023: 3.3 mg - 1.47 mg 2024: 1/5/24: 1.44 mg; 1/19/24: 1.40 mg; 1/26/24: 1.37 mg; 2/2/24: 1.34 mg; 2/9/24: 1.31 mg; 2/23/24: 1.28 mg; 3/1/24: 1.25 mg; 3/8/24: 1.22 mg; 3/15/24: 1.19 mg

Thank you for your sweet message....I am thinking about you too.  I am ok, same old same old.  It has only been two days since my cut so too early to say how that will go, hopefully all will be fine.  I really appreciate your support, Rabe, and hope you are doing as well as can be.  💗

Hello @wantreliefNot sure how I found your thread but when reading it I see that you have gone thru a lot of the symtoms I have now.Depersonaliztion 24/7 what I call death threats, intrusive constant thoughts.I have a very long history with meds and obviously did major damage.i was on a 2yr hold where I was able to parent and go into public.I was tapering agAin 2 of my meds and went to fast and starting having bad wds,I then think I forgot part of my Effexor dose for a week and tried to fix it by updosing the lamictal which helped me get out of hell before and now I can barely function again.Alto helped me split my dose time around and I actually had a window a month ago but fell back into darkness last sun.just want to network with someone who knows these feelings and share survival strategy.I see u are able to be at home and rest where I can’t just be,the thoughts just kill me,I can’t handle my kids or wife so I leave and try to walk, work, read

SA .can u tell me how u deal with SThouhgts and intrusive thoughts as distraction so hard.I know U are tryin to survive as well and I pray we all get to see some peace again.Thx for listening.i don’t want to lose my family and job but the pain is brutal

Hello @Allreadygone - I am so sorry you are going through so much and I am sorry you are back to having bad symptoms again after having a window a month ago.  I do have trouble with dark and anxious thoughts.  I try to just notice the thoughts, recognize them, and accept that they are not me but my brain "misfiring".  However, sometimes I am really anxious or overwhelmed and this practice goes out the window. I often end up in tears.  It helps to talk to my partner or friends who understand. It sounds like you are doing so well with working as well as distracting.  You are doing what you can and that is all we can do really....just keep holding on until this passes.  You had a window a month ago and that is a wonderful sign your brain is healing.  I hope that is helpful.

I know how scary this all feels, @Allreadygone. The thoughts did go away during your window though so that is definite proof that these thoughts are not real, you are not losing your mind even if it feels that way.  Thank you for asking about my taper....it has gone well so far in that it hasn't noticeably worsened my symptoms although there are some times that are harder than others.  Hang in here....you are going to be ok.

Thank you for the kind words. I honestly don't know what else to do as the drug is not really doing anything for me at this point and I think (although don't really know anything for sure) is causing the symptoms I am having....the only way for me to find out is to somehow get off of the drug.

Hello Wantrelief

Thank you for your kind message on my thread.  I popped over to see how you are doing after your latest cut.  Promising that it hasn't, thus far, worsened your symptoms.

I think you and I have a similarity in that our CNSs are so de-stabilised to begin with that the reductions now rattle the sensitive system.  So holding out hope for you that this latest cut is without any wobbles.

Thinking of you, f-i-a

oh and yes, this is how I try to practice, it's find when I'm feeling a bit "better" but if it's a super-CNS-wobble-day it's darned hard to get through them. I usually end up just hanging in and watching the clock tick by slowly while telling myself the next day may well be better.  I know those times, friend, I know.  You are doing your absolute best.

Oh thank you Neroli.  I am just so hard on myself.  I must work more on self-compassion.  I keep meaning to listen to some talks on that but then....don't.  I hope you are doing ok and are finding some moments  of peace and calm whilst on your "retreat".  I've been thinking about you.

Just wanted to pop by to say I hope you’re coping okay today. I can totally relate to being in tears at times. We fight n struggle so hard, n we have to keep at it day after day. Some days we just need to cry.

Thanks for the pop by and checking-in with me, Carmie. I do seem a bit teary lately but on a positive note, I am grateful to be able to cry.  It (crying) can be a release of tension and a genuine way to express the utter frustration and sadness I can feel at times.  There have been times in withdrawal where I couldn't cry and that was very difficult.  I hope you are coping okay today.

I am just so hard on myself.  I must work more on self-compassion

Hello Wantrelief, friend-in-arms

It's not "you" that's being hard on yourself, it's the effects of these drugs and the WD.  By the very act of organising your taper the best way you can, looking after yourself and being a valued support to other people, you are already in major self-compassion mode.  It's there already. How many times have you had to accept the effect of this withdrawal,  to honestly realise the limits of this "new" you and admit that there are things that you can't join in now?  Self-compassion and courage right there.  (I'm not lecturing!).

The bit I find hard is softening into those times when I am right up against the edges of hopelessness.  Don't know if I could do it but it sounds like a reasonable idea (one I got from watching videos of Vidyamala Burch who has dealt with severe pain for over 30 years).  I'll let you know If I can soften next time........

I've had some moments of ok-ness, usually when I manage to push thoughts of work and how I'm going to cope in the next year, what with the legs and all, to the back of my mind and allow myself to knit for however long I want, to rest my legs up, to watch a video or something.

Warm wishes

Thank you so very much @neroli for your beautiful message - it was very helpful for me to read what you wrote and for me to have your wise words to look back on during low moments.

I am glad you have had some times of being able to push back fearful thoughts and have had moments of "ok-ness" (good word!), maybe even able to escape a bit?

I think I read that it is cooler now where you are and hopefully that is helping.

I am thinking about you, Neroli. 💗

Hello Wantrelief

Your words help me when I'm at the edge, so I'm pleased if I can reciprocate.

I've just been over to sit with a neighbour in her 80s - she wanted me to stay longer and have a cup of tea but I could only manage 45 minutes.  I was yawning like mad (the meds. or the fatigue) and had the wees, and some flatulence, plus my legs were disappointingly  wobbly (I'd thought they were feeling better until I walked over the road).  I'm back home and will have a cup of tea at 3.  I wonder if I pushed it a bit trimming vines in my back yard.  How darned frustrating all of this business is.

I hope your day is going ok.

I think mine could be one of those "softening into it" days...........

Yes, today has been overcast and cooler which helps.  Some sun trying to get through now -------noooooooooo, please!

Hello there WR

Popping in to say hello and hope you are coping.  Been a while since I've written (well, a few days but it seems a while).

Today has been ok, I had a walk earlier before the heat got up (21 degrees C at 10am and burning sun) I am a heap in the hot weather.  Still, it was good to have a bit of a walk with a friend and a decaf coffee afterwards.

Usual distractions since then, knitting, colouring, listening to/watching encouraging videos.
