deejer: Dad trying to stop Seroquel

I've been trying to learn about this forum, just discovered it on google.  Guess you have to start here....

Quick backstory....  My son was diagnosed with a cancerous brain tumor right before Christmas in 2016.  Long story short he's doing great after about 3 years of treatments/surgeries (all things considered).  I started having a lot of anxiety, nerves, insomnia so my family PA put me on Seroquel 50mg to help with the anxiety and insomnia.  Well, I figured everything on my son's end is doing great so I want to stop the Seroquel, been on 50mg since early 2017.

I went from 50mg cutting pills in half to 25mg and no issues at all.  Went this route for about 3 months.  Thought I could go from 25 to 0.... WRONG!  My PA isn't much help and I've been trying to read through the tips thread but getting lost in it.  She has prescribed 25mg pills which I'm trying to do half (12.5mg) and the past 3 nights have been pretty rough.  I'm falling asleep but only for about 1.5 hours max.  My mind is turning on and just jumping from random thought to thought.

I don't know if this is too much detail or right type of introduction....  Anyways.  Looking for any and all help!!!

Hello, I'm sorry to hear that you are having such trouble sleeping, and a restless mind.  We are here to help.  We have all been through psych med withdrawal here.

First of all, we need more information from you to be able to help you.  We will need to know more specifics on your drug history.  Depending on how long you have been off the Seroquel, we might be able to do a partial reinstatement.

Please add a signature.  Include drugs, doses, dates, and discontinuations & reinstatements in the last 12-24 months. Also include supplements. This will help us give you the most accurate advice we can.

  • Any drugs and supplements prior to 24 months ago can just be listed with start and stop years.
  • Please use actual dates or approximate dates (mid-June, Late October) rather than relative time frames (last week, 3 months ago)
  • Spell out months, e.g. "October" or "Oct."; 9/1/2016 can be interpreted as Jan. 9, 2016 or Sept. 1, 2016.
  • Please leave out symptoms and diagnoses.
  • A list is easier to understand than one or multiple paragraphs.

These drugs work by changing our nervous systems. When we start to go off of them, the nervous system then has to change back to it's predrug state, which takes a long time, because our nervous systems are complex.  But take heart, healing can, and will happen, given time and perseverance.  Here is some more information.

I understand the frustration of not being able to sleep, because I've experienced it.  It will get better.  Please hang in there, and take care of yourself.
