How to use this site - Questions and answers

Where do I find this signature thing everyone keeps pushing me to create? There is nothing that says "how to create a signature and where to put it" I'm sorry, to bother you all but I'm very upset and confused and none of this is helpingme

How can I reach a specific topic for my posts not specific thread but topic is this possible.  Today I am trying to find some things I have posted to SA and can't find.  As an example I trying to find a post I made about "delayed withdrawal"  how would I do this?

Click on your name at the top right of every page and click on My Content to find anything you've posted.

I think the data in 'my content' is limited to the previous year, but you can often find content you posted earlier using google if you know what you are looking for and type in the right key words.

Btdt, it is not what 'you' can fit into that section, it is what the board keeps track of for your convenience. We don't have any way of 'controlling' that. Don't forget, this board is supported by donations and even though posts are basically text files on a server and don't take up much space, when you take into account you have over 5k posts, you'd have pages and pages of posts to wade through if you are looking for something, if all were kept in your profile. Too much duplication too. Far better to use google as Petu suggested as the site search searches on I have no clue what. Whenever I try to use it it returns results totally unrelated to my query. I have never found any online discussion board to have a good search function anyway. But one thing I found a long time ago is that if your writing style and thoughts on a subject are unique, they will pop to the top of the google search results and you'll see your posts tied to this site. That's why I try not to capitalize proper names in my posts, no one needs to see what kind of nike shoes I might have bought on a discussion board related to psych issues.

 

As you may have learned from your Topix experience, using a website to store your personal content is never a good idea. A case of 'here today, gone tomorrow' can strike at any time, even here.

If you click on the little gear symbol to the right of the SA search box, you'll be able to search through all your content without date restriction, or you can specify a period in which to search.

 

Google is very handy as well and probably easier to use.

This kind of shows why I am not the best person to be commenting on the "how to use" thread because I did not know this.

 

I also shows me in a stark way the kind of person I am about stuff that does not perform the way I want it to. I don't use the search function on the site because it returns results that waste my time. But I decided to try Alto's hint and searched on my handle and a topic I remember commenting on long ago, knitting.

 

A post by btdt was the first result, in Muddles' thread, and I commented somewhere in the thread but not the post I wanted. My specific result was not until second to last in 9 results. Nice time waster. I am not even interested in checking out the other 7 results the search algorithm found for me. So it may search on 'my content' but not too specifically or maybe specifically enough for its tastes alone.

 

So I abandoned the site search long ago and relied on google and never even delved into the extensions of the site's own search. If the search worked the way I wanted (searching only MY content), the first result would not have been btdt's but mine.

 

But I did find the post where I commented on my post showing up tied to the site when I talked about a lady getting an MRI on her brain while she laid on her back knitting away.

 

Your mileage may vary. Time to crawl back into my craft cave.

You are the perfect person to answer "how to use" questions, just keep in mind there's always more to learn.

 

Much of the human-built world is poorly designed, mostly out of stupidity, not malice. I also get very frustrated by this.

 

Try not to take it too personally, everyone has to deal with it. Most forum sites have very limited search capabilities, it's built in the foundation, some common service they all use.

Ok here is another how to question:

 

I cannot find the thread about tapering off of Proton pump inhibitors... I know it is here as I wrote a few post to it ... I have searched here and used google search I cannot find it... I have tried both ppi lower and upper case and spelled the words out.. nothing comes up with any search... where is it how do I find threads I know are here?

 

 

Do I need to search for it on wayback because it was too long ago?

Here's your search string (only because I have a memory for topics):

 

"Tips for tapering off stomach acid blockers"

 

And how weird, I used just 'ppi' [ surviving antidepressants.org ppi ] as my search string and it came up as 1st result.

 

What the heck search engine you using? Are you using the initial URL for SA followed by a space then your term as exactly in my example above? Did you use site search only in Tapering forum (which ONLY has 195 topics, but that's just this morning's count)? I'm not seeking answers, just offering additional insights here. Sites search is not ALL that bad so try it sometimes.

 

Since I have no life at present, I'd happily take on the job of tackling the 'tag' system, what say Alto? Only in the symptoms forum tho.

Of course if the tag system itself is cr@p, then it's a waste of time. But I have a feeling it actually works, at least on the site.

PM why do some pm have a cannot reply at the bottom?  I assume because the person does not want to hear back from you ... wants to have the last word on a topic... and ....how does one do this.

I think it is because they have deleted the conversion.  Deleting completed conversations makes sense if a person receives a lot of PMs because there is a limit on storage and once full you can't receive PMs.

CC got it right on the nose. I'm supposed to be monitoring this thread as the unofficial tech guru, my only real 'job' here but Chessie got to it before I did.

 

How does one do that you ask? Well, one deletes the PM before the other has a chance to answer and it could be because they were clearing out their inbox so they could get more PMs, something you may need to do yourself.

 

You actually did this to me twice in the past, you sent me a PM then deleted the convo without waiting for my answer. And why? Who knows and I try not to read ulterior motives into something I read on a discussion board on the internet populated by people in an emotional state, causes problems.

 

And it is never a good idea to post the contents of private messages in a thread for all to see. Private messages are private, meant to be read then burned or crumpled up and eaten (like James Bond) or saved on your own computer for only YOU to read. I gave directions on how to do this already, I don't repeat myself.

 

Never attribute to malice.... oh heck, wikipedia gives a better explanation of Hanlon's Razor than I. I like to use it in the form of 'there is often a simpler explanation for things and it's not the one you think' instead.

nz -- You can upload JPG and PNG file formats. I've done both. Others such as GIF and TIFF are probably acceptable.

 

You can "drag and drop" it or click "choose files". Both these actions will add the image as an attachment.

 

Remember that you have only 500 MB as space and that attachments AND personal messages are counted against this limit. You may, therefore,  need to delete messages and attachments to add the image you now want in a post.

Please use regular sentence case not all CAPS in posts and topic titles.

 

To preview a post before submitting it click on the right-most option of the editing toolbar. It looks like a magnifying glass over a piece of paper.

 

To close the preview click the "X" that appears in a black circle at the top right.

lads...what's going on with the updated website??? seems to have made life harder. more difficult to navigate and it crashes regularly.....why was this done? and are we going to rectify problems???

The old program was no longer being supported.  The change over to the new software was delayed for as long as possible but Alto had no choice.  The mods are also finding it overwhelming and confusing.

 

What specific issues are you experiencing?

Hi, I tried to reply on threads that discussed problems people are having with the recent software upgrade, but it won't let me reply! Strangely, that "Read this first" forum says you can reply but not start new topics - that only admins can start topics there. For some reason the software does not give me an option to reply to any of the threads or posts there, but apparently will let me start a topic there. (I'm not an admin... that I know of lol!) Therefore I'm reserving starting a topic there until I've exhausted every other option. (Even tried "Contact us" but it's been many days, maybe a week or more, and still baffled. No idea where that one went!)

 

Was trying to learn the new software and most is self-explanatory. I read that everyone including admins are having problems with it, but was unable to post specific questions even though others have. (At least til June 21, apparently????)

 

My PM (messages) box is nearly full, and I like to send copies of old messages to myself by email, to refer to if the person contacts me later and I don't remember the specifics of their situation. Doing that made it a little tricky to find their messages sometimes, but occasionally when I could I found their previous private messages and reading them prevented me from giving inappropriate advice. (I have trouble keeping track of my own situation, much less particulars of people who wrote to me months ago!)

 

But I was unable to find the option I used to use when inbox was near capacity, and don't want to empty all old messages. Is that function still there and I'm not finding it? Trying to ask about this (and other things that had me confused - can't even remember what atm) led me to finding that I could not reply on tech support and "how to use this site" threads. Aargh.

 

Any help would be appreciated, and if you want to move this post to a more appropriate place, that's fine. Thank you!

The latest version of IP Board's forum software has eliminated the functionality provided by the previous "archive message" tool. :blink::angry:

 

Also, you may wish to follow this topic. My merging the posts then recreating a topic removed your previous "follow or notify" status.

Life is change and change is life.

Must admit i find change a challenge.....

Im sure this update was necessary for many reasons.....

Things ive noticed....been rather busy lately so havent checked in so much....what i am missing seeing when i browse on the run without signing in is the drug sig. of members. No doubt there is a reason for this....but its a frustrating pain in the ....

Also i notice the page continuum thing on the right hand side is real slow....could be my computer though.

Please dont take these as criticisms just observations.

nz11 -- Making the signatures visible only to logged in members is probably a new default setting for privacy reasons.

 

I'm not sure to what you're referring when you write, " the page continuum thing on the right hand side." If it something that's bothering you, please post a screen capture.

Hi mods--I also have a very simple and maybe silly question re: the formatting of this site--which is, how do I add posts/updates to "my" thread/intro?  In other words, as opposed to posting an answer to what another member posted, I would like to post on the intro thread that I myself started? How do I locate the place where I can post updates?

It appears to be a default setting of the software that is based on assumptions about the use of signatures and how much information mobile users want to see. We use the signature to convey important information; the vast majority of other sites use the signature as a form of personal expression.

 

Note: When I rotated an Android tablet to landscape view whilst viewing the site in Firefox, I got the full desk-top version that made the signatures visible. Rotating back to portrait view presented the mobile version.

You can find where you've posted over the last 12 month period by

  1. navigating to your profile (click the arrow ▼ next to your username in the top right of a page) and then
  2. clicking on the "See my activity" button.
  3. clicking on the "Topics" tab of the left menu.

    Result: a list of the topics you've started will appear. Your intro topic will be there.

 

If you've set up to follow your introduction topic click the same ▼ next to your username and then

  1. Select "Manage followed content"
  2. Review the list of topics you follow
  3. Click on the link for your intro topic.

Answer to your question:

All user settings can be found by clicking on the downward pointing triangle next to your username at the top right corner of every page.

  1. Click the downward pointing triangle next to your username at the top right corner of every page.
    Result: A drop-down menu appears.
     
  2. Click on "Profile", the first item in the drop-down menu.
    Result: Your profile page appears.
     
  3. Click on "Edit Profile", a dark grey button that appears in the black rectangle that has your user name and avatar.
    Result: An "Edit profile" page appears with the editable fields of your profile visible.
     
  4. Edit the fields you wish
     
  5. Important: Click the "Save" button at the bottom.

The field i want to update is not here.

i want to update in the page profil "My history (confidential)"

the field is not in that page. Another idea?
