I'm so glad you are having a window.  As time goes on, the windows will increase and the waves should decrease.  Just keep on holding, holding, holding.....   eventually you will get off this drug, and the really long hold will allow your system to stabilize, and future tapers should be easier.

I am glad to hear you had a window and courageously held out against being put in that hospital and that you are starting to see a pattern in the windows and waves.  Fair dues to you - things do improve if you keep holding on.

Oaktree

Currently tapering Mirtazapine; previously tapered Cymbalta 30mg from June 2018-Feb 2019 and Seroquel 150mg to zero from Oct-December 2020.

Supplements for Hashimoto's disease and histamine issues relating to Mirtazapine:   Vitamin D3 1,000mcg, bio-identical HRT, Selenium, Quercetin, Lutein, Zinc, Vitamin C, Omega 3.

Mirtazapine Taper: 2021 16th Aug -  transitioned to liquid from tablet by dissolving two 15mg tablets into a solution of 15 ml water and 15 ml maple syrup on a starting dose of what I thought was 7.5ml; 17 Sept  - 7.31; 24 Sept  - 7.13; 15 Oct  - 6.95; 6 Nov  - 6.78; 21 Nov  - 6.61; 5 Dec  - 6.51;

2022 - 1 Jan 6.41; 1 Feb  - 6.1; 9 Mar -  5.8; 13 Mar - 5.9; 7 Apr - 5.8; 21 Apr - 5.7; 7 May - 5.63; 23 May - 5.55; 8 June 5.50;  (got COVID on 12th June so held); 1 July 5.4; 15 July 5.32; 8 Aug 5.2; 15 Aug 5.1; 22 Aug 5; 19 Sept 4.9; 2 Oct 4.81; 13 Oct 4.71; (COVID Booster 17/10/22 so longer hold ); 1 Nov 4.65; 3 Nov 4.60; 10 Nov 4.55; 13 Nov 4.50; 17 Nov 4.45; 20 Nov 4.40;  2 Dec 4.30mg; 9 Dec 4.20mg; I discovered that the volumetric container measured 33ml rather than 30ml in Dec 2022. Following helpful advice from moderator OnMyWay (see her  reply of the 5th March) discovered taper with the dilution was 3.8mg (calculated by dividing 30/33 so that every 1ml of solution has  0.90ml of Mirtazapine.  7.50 - 0.90= 6.6ml which was the starting dose on 16th Aug 2021 not 7.5ml).  I decided to keep using the solution as I didn't want more change to deal with than I had to.

Thank you @Oaktree1 for posting on my thread. I appreciate your kind words. In the thick of a wave right now, so it's hard to see the light. Thanks for your advice. I see you are still tapering and have gotten quite low - congrats. Did things get worse as you got lower in your dose? I'm hoping/praying I am one of the few who may feel better at lower doses.

Hi Sunflower414,

Well I am now tapering Mirtazapine since August 2021 and my symptoms have gotten better in the past few months - touching a lot of wood.  I am sleeping on average 7 hours a night now and my eczema and allergies have abated a lot.   (touching wood everywhere).  It may get more challenging as I get lower; hopefully it will not but I don't think about it and I just think - well I am now at x dose and I will watch for x symptom and hold until I feel ready.  That's what you are doing now I think.  You've been on drugs from a young age so it may take longer.  Just accepting that it will take patience and time and learning to ride out the waves is what you do and you're doing that now already.

I wouldn't be thinking too much about how you may feel at lower doses.   Just focus on one day at a time.

Thank you @Oaktree1 I see you got off of other medications as well. How have you been since getting off of the other medications? It is so hard to not worry, but you are right. Trying to take it one day at a time is the best course of action. I think I really suffer from the PTSD from the beginning of this experience. How do you find the strength to hold? I feel that it is difficult always having to swallow something I don't want to take.

Hi @Sunflower414

Well in 2014 I stopped my Surmontil (Trimipramine) cold turkey thinking that I was only on 50mg that it would not be a big deal - it was - I had six weeks of severe akathisia, insomnia and pain attacks - that's how I ended up on Mirt.  I did a Cymbalta taper too - much too fast - severe side effects.

So all I need to do to find the strength to hold is to remember what happened back in 2014 and in 2019 - cold turkey and a too fast taper.  That's why I am now going as slow as I can - I don't want to go through that again.  I would love like yourself not to have to take this stuff but if you can just think what is the alternative?  The cold turkey experience?  That is worse I think based on my own experience.  It's the best of two bad alternatives - you will get off this drug eventually I think if you follow the advice from the mods and take your taper slowly.  I know it would be lovely to never have to take one of these things again but if you read the threads on how psyche drugs remodel the brain - for most of us it just isn't possible to do cold turkey or a too fast taper without severe symptoms.

@Oaktree1 I'm sorry you had to experience that and you suffered. I pray and hope i can get to a place where i can taper slowly and have some quality of life, and not suffer. I saw the article that came out yesterday basically debunking SSRIs. and I am just in shock and grieving. I was told I needed them since the age of 7. It is mind blowing when you're whole belief system is shattered. ❤️

Yes - it is dreadful to realise that...there is nothing you can do unfortunately only grieve and use the anger as fuel to give you the determination to get off these things.

The drugging of small children like you were once is dreadful and morally wrong.  People may have felt like they were doing their best and listened to the so called experts but it is terrible all the same what happened to you and to a lot of other innocent children - profoundly disgusting and a stain on humanity.   I was there where you were once twice in my life - with the 'shattered belief system' - it is a scary place to be in....but...look around you here when you've time and read as much as you can on how to taper and how to manage the symptoms and I think you will slowly find acceptance of your situation and become less scared.

You are not alone in what you have suffered though I am sure it must feel like that often.   I find if you educate yourself as much as possible that will give you strength - read Robert Whitaker's 'Anatomy of an Epidemic' for a start - that was written back I think in around 2010 ; Peter Breggin wrote 'Toxic Psychiatry' back in 1994 I think so the evidence has been around for a while.  The good thing is that it now seems to going mainstream.

If it is of any comfort - you are still very young - you have lots of time left to heal and to live -  I would love to be your age -  and you are living at a time when this horrible 'drug' paradigm of care seems to be finally being called into question.   I hope the impetus will last.  At the very least I think anti depressants will soon be as discredited and feared as benzodiazapines now are.  It took 30 years for that to happen with benzos - now it seems to be happening with the SSRI's too.   So please take heart from that - that evidence should help you against any familial pressure to engage further with psychiatric services.  Some members of my own family of origin were so wilfully ignorant that I eventually did them a typed memo of all the drugs I was on and what they had done to my health - put them back in their place - I haven't heard a pip out of them since.   Some people need to be whacked sharply on the head in the metaphorical sense.   I hope this helps a bit.

HI @Greatful -- how are you doing? I hope you are well.

I am trudging along. I had a decent 18 days, and back in the throws of withdrawal again. I am unsure how to continue tapering, or if I will ever be able to. It is very disheartening. I've been doing this for over two years now, not even half way off the paxil. Although I know my rocky start probably is causing my journey to be rougher than it needed to be. (rough is an understatement).

I hope everyone is well.

Medicated at age 7. Many med changes (over 20). Tapered off Xanax in 2018.

Hi @Sunflower414,

I’ve been following your thread;  I was started on Prozac at age 11 and am now 41 on Zoloft… but anyways, wanted to encourage you.  I was on 200 mg Zoloft (max dose) and once I got the dosage down a ways, I took a 2.5 year break from tapering and I feel that it really helped me in the long run.

I resumed tapering approx 2 years ago and it’s been easier now.  I wonder if it has to do with having been on ssri medication so long and that the brain just needs some more breaks in the time spent tapering to reverse those long term changes that took place.

You have endured a lot!  You are strong and you can get off these meds!  What you have been through matters!

1992-1995 Prozac+klonopin, 11 y/o

1996 - 1997 Celexa and lithium

1998-1999 Paxil; 2000 -2008 Prozac

2006-2007 Gabapentin, CT’d (for a herniated disc injury) still took prozac

2008-2010 Zoloft, Wellbutrin, Klonopin

2008 to present - Zoloft

Started tapering from 200 mg Sertraline/Zoloft in 2014.  Stayed at 25 mg for 2.5-3 years, went back up to 37.5 mg due to the pandemic anxiety in March/April 2020

Started slow taper from 37.5mg in Nov 2020.  2022: 5/9 17.4 mg.  6/06 17 mg. 7/06 16.7 mg.  7/20 16.3. 8/15 15.7. 8/24 15.4.  9/23 15.1. 11/16 13.3. 12/14 12.8. 2023: 4/18 10.3. 5/23 9.8. 7/11 9.2 10/17 7.2. 12/05 6.5. 2024: 01/24 5.5.

Supplements: Mag glycinate, Omega 3, Multi Mins, Lithium orotate, D3, K2, Niacinamide, C, desiccated liver, glycine, soy lecithin, B12, B6, B9, evening primrose oil, probiotics, biotrophic plus.

What caused you to hold for so long? I am holding now and have been for awhile. How did you know that you were ready to continue tapering? what percent did you drop each time? Have you been able to lead a decent life during this taper round? ❤️

I'm so happy you are doing much better this time around

I held for a long time because I was having POTS like symptoms and very low blood pressure, super moody, just a lot of withdrawal symptoms and I couldn’t cope with two young kids.  I had been tapering at a fast rate for me, I guess. It was initially a fast taper from 200 to 150 and down by 50 mg increments until I got to 50 mg. Then I went a bit slower, but still too fast in hindsight.

When I started tapering again in 11/2020, I started at 3% and now I’m tapering at 2%.  I’m going much slower than I was before the 2.5 year hold.  I felt stable and like I was doing pretty well before I resumed the taper.

This time around I feel like I’m able to function a lot better and be able to do the necessary things like cooking dinner and running errands, etc.

I really think that the long hold helped me and was well worth it!!!!

it was nice to not have to measure the doses or think about tapering for a while.  I think I benefited emotionally from the break.

I am in a horrible wave, even after holding at this dosage for 6 months.

Has anyone found that they just never stabilize or feel better? What do you do if that is the case? Do some people just never heal? This is all very overwhelming. I'm a patient person, but the suffering just goes on and on. I'm not sure what to do to help it get better.

Hi sunflower.  I'm. truly sorry that you are in the nasty wave.  I do believe that all people heal.  Some people just take a very long time to heal.  Paxil is an especially hard drug to recover from.  Two of our staff, altostrata, and @Erell, have had a difficult time with Paxil. I can understand why you feel so overwhelmed.  You are doing the right thing by holding.  Your nervous system has been significantly destabilized by the many drugs and drug changes of the past, and it needs copious amounts of time to rest, and stabilize.  I'm praying for you on a regular basis.

Now is a good time to really learn and practice non drug coping techniques for dealing with these symptoms.  Learning these skills will serve you well for the rest of your life.  Shep is one of our staff, and she has healed from being polydrugged too.  Here is her toolkit:

I took a 2.5 year break from tapering and I feel that it really helped me in the long run.

I resumed tapering approx 2 years ago and it’s been easier now.  I wonder if it has to do with having been on ssri medication so long and that the brain just needs some more breaks in the time spent tapering to reverse those long term changes that took place.

This is fantastic.  It goes to show that a very long hold can to wonders to help the brain recover and rest.

Thank you @getofflexI am going to check out all these resources you have given me. How are you doing now? I saw that you are finally drug free. CONGRATS!

I appreciate the kind words and prayers. With Paxil being a difficult drug to discontinue, is there a point where you just say forget it and take the medication? Is tapering still worth it? I want to be free from it, but I am growing weary and tired from this experience. Thanks for all your constant support and help. Xoxo

Hey Sunflower.  I’m very sorry to read of your predicament.  I was in this position after some issue with fluoxetine (expired liquid or bad batch or something, never will know).  After 6 months of waiting for stabilization that never came, I looked to the mods at SA for advice.  Based on my symptoms, it seemed I was reacting to the Prozac I was on (switched to brand name and slightly lower dose after aforementioned issue above) and I decided it was time to start tapering. I’m going slowly and it’s not at all easy, but that’s what I’m doing.  I plan on a semi long hold once I get to 5mg.

If I were you and fwiw, I would follow whatever advice getofflex advises as they are clearly the expert having seen and helped hundreds, if not thousands, of cases like ours.  Remember, doing nothing in cases like this may be the most proactive thing you can do.  Best of luck and I really truly hope you feel better soon!!!

Good, please do, because these coping skills are great personal skills to have for other situations as well.

I personally believe tapering is still worth it. It took me 5 years to taper off Lexapro, but I have myself back now.  It is definitely worth it!  Instead of feeling emotionally and spiritually numb, I can now really enjoy things, and feel my emotions.  My marriage is better - my husband says I'm more available to him.  I went on a hike this morning, my enjoyment of nature was much richer and deeper.  Also my spiritual life is better - feel a connection to God again.  I can understand that yo are tired and weary from this experience, it is grueling.  Like Aveju said previously, doing the long hold can give you a break, and in time, you will stabilize, and get to where you don't have these horrific waves again.  It may take a very long time, as in a year or two, but in the long run, it should pay off.  After that, your taper will be easier, and if you taper really carefully, and listen to your body, you should have an easier time of it.

As long as there is no adverse reaction, yes, doing nothing is the best thing to do.  You did daily journals in May, and we saw no evidence of an adverse reaction.  If you want, you could do some more journals now, and see if you have developed an adverse reaction since then.

Yes! I also believe that sometimes a long hold is needed. Even when you start to feel better after a cut, I believe "under the hood" you're still healing. Sometimes it's necessary to do a long hold, especially if you have gone through a situation where your nervous system was destabilized, such as in going cold turkey temporarily.

-Since 2017-ish I've been on Cymbalta & Mirtazapine. At max dose it was 120mg cymbalta and 45mg mirtazapine. This combo was meant to deal with a depressive episode and it worked. Over the next few years I tapered down from those high doses. I had tried to get off the cymbalta twice and had to reinstate twice. I don't remember when. Maybe 2018? 2019?

-Since 2020 I've been stable 20mg cymbalta and 7.5mg mirtazapine (this is mainly for sleep now). I have come off of the mirtazapine before without trouble, but still take it occasionally for sleep.

-August 2nd began taking 10mg prozac as a bridge to attempt to get off cymbalta. Took 10mg for about a week then 20mg for a few days. Stopped taking the cymbalta and was doing okay for a bit, but things didn't seem to get better and maybe have been getting worse.

-8/25/2021 - 20mg cymbalta and struggling. Stopped the prozac. I'm struggling, but I can probably ride this out if I had to. My concern is that things will continue to get worse, as they seem to be doing.

-8/29/2021 - things started to get worse. Probably prozac withdrawal. Reinstated 20mg prozac.

-9/2/2021 - 20mg cymbalta, 5mg prozac, 7.5 mg mirtazapine --> 9/24/2021 - 20mg cymbalta, 5mg prozac, 3.75 mg mirtazapine --> 11/7/2021 - 20mg cymbalta, 3.75mg prozac, 3.75 mg mirtazapine --> 4/24/2022 - 20mg cymbalta, 3.75mg prozac   --> 6/5/2022 - 20mg cymbalta, 3.33mg prozac

Hi  dear!
Remember that when you’re in a wave, it feels like you’ll always be in a wave. IT IS A LIE, this is anxiety speaking! this is temporary, this too shall pass. Repeat this: this too shall pass. Remember your windows.
When I’m in a wave honestly… I read every success testimony on this website. Hell I even read the same ones several times. It does help.

April 2020: 10mg Escitalopram

July 2020: fast tapper tried to quit. Failed.
september 2020: Trintellix 20mg.
october 2021: fast taper off Trintellix (1 week). Reinstated 10mg in January 2022 for 3 weeks, failed, kindling effect so I quit rapidly, now off meds since then.

Hi all,

I haven't been active on here or any social media for that matter in a few weeks. I wanted to pop on to give an update, but probably won't be very active for awhile. I noticed I was becoming obsessed with my symptoms and reading other peoples stories. For me, a break was needed and it did help.

I've been holding at this dosage for quite a few months (another thing I'm doing is not keeping track. It makes me feel bad when I hold, so I stopped doing that). However, I am pleased to say, this is a GOOD update. After over 2 years of horrific, unexplainable symptoms and anxiety, intrusive thoughts, and just.... no words, I can say I am functioning decently well for about 32 days now. I look back on these past two years and truly can't believe I'm alive. It was that bad.

For the past 32 days, I have been I'd say functioning  "normally" at about 60-70%. Which isn't amazing, but its a hell of a lot better than the 0% I was at for over 2 years. I found someone I talk to weekly who has been super helpful. I am on a strict carnviore/keto diet, which has probably made the most difference. I stopped making myself feel bad for things I am not doing (hanging out with friends, working full time, sleeping in late, etc.). I purchased a sauna that has been a safe haven for me. I read my bible and pray in it as much as I can. I shared with my close friends what has been going on, and 2 of them have been super supportive. They've helped me ease my way back into hanging out with them. I was embarrassed at first that this was even a thing, but I was amazing at how they reacted and how supportive they have been. Other things I've done this month - threw my sister a baby shower. A year ago, I was throwing up shaking and couldn't get off the floor to attend her wedding shower. And this time I even planned the party. I've attended 2 weddings. One which was a three hour drive. I cried once feeling overwhelmed, but overall, I DID it. Before this horrific WD stuff, I was a runner. I've ran a handful of times this month.

While this is a good update, I would be lying if I said I wasn't terrified that it's all going to come back. I have extreme PTSD. If I feel any symptom, I begin to panic. I still have intrusive thoughts from time to time. They used to be 247, now it happens a few times a week.

For a long time I didn't laugh or feel any happiness. Anyone who knows me knows my dog is my bestfriend and there were many days I thought "if my dog died, would I even care?" which is a terrible thing to think, but it shows how out of it I was. There have been a handful of times I have laughed this month. And a handful of times I thought "OMG i think I'm happy right now?" and cried from being able to finally feel something GOOD.

This was all over the place, but I suppose this is my reminder to my future tapering self that it does get better. Even after a long time, a lot of suffering, and so much pain -- somehow, someday, it will improve.

I plan on re-evaluating the idea of tapering in a month or two with my doctor. And you better believe it will be as slow as a snails pace.

Thanks all for reading. If anyone has any questions about the diet i'm following, or anything in general, I'll check tonight.

Xoxooxo Keep going!

@Sunflower414

Great update🌞  I can relate to needing time away from the forums.  It can get pretty overwhelming and hard to think you will ever heal when that's all you read about....pain and fear.  We need to take a step back and focus on our goals and what we need to get through this nightmare.   I think it's also coming to the realization that we have to dig down deep and find support that helps us but also finding that support within ourselves.....

I am interested in your diet....
