Bea81: Two weeks of Zoloft and I'm in more pain than I thought was possible. Any advice and support very much needed.

Recommended Posts

Hello.

Im a 39 year old female from Norway and I am now two weeks of Zoloft after a 4 month tap off. I was on this medication for 20 years (yes it's crazy and scary) and before I decided to go off it I had started feeling pretty severe side effects and also from looking back I don't feel the medication ever really helped me. I was suicidal while on it years ago. Sorry for any typos since English is not my main language and also I am so sick right now I can barely hit the letters. Extreme nausea, diarea, dry mouth, very very sensitive to sound and light and I cry ALL the time. I swear I have never in my life, not even when losing loved ones, have I cryed this much. Im not a person that easily cries and at this point is starting to scare me and also having an affect on my family and friends. I don't know what to do and don't know how to get thru this. Its taking a toll on those around me to, they dont complain but I know it must be hard. I also learned a close friend have brain cancer and less than a year to live so I truly feel like I'm gonna lose my mind. I get these wawes of this intense fear that I can't really compare to anything else I've felt. Are these "normal" withdrawl symptoms? How long will they last? Is it dangerous in the way that it can be so straining on my heart I could have a heart attack? Any advice will be so very very welcomed. Thank's for taking the time to read.

Hello, and welcome to SA.  We are a peer owned and run forum of people who have been or are getting off of psychiatric drugs.  I'm very sorry to hear that you are having these bad symptoms from getting off of the Zoloft.  You have come to the right place.  This could have been caused by tapering off the drug too fast.  Very few doctors know how to properly taper people off gradually enough.  It sounds as though you had an adverse reaction to it.  What specific side effects did you have while you were on it besides feeling suicidal?

Can you please give us specific information about your drug history for all drugs you are on and have been on, especially for the past 18-24 months?  It would be especially helpful to have the details of your drugs in a concise list (no symptoms), only drug names, specific dates (as best you can say for example early March if you don't recall the day) and dosages of each medication decrease or increase.  Please read the link below for instructions.  This will allow us to give you the best guidance.

We don't suggest many supplements, but 2 that many of us find helpful are magnesium and omega-3 fish oil. Here are the links for info about those. It is suggested to add one at a time, and start with a low dose to see how it affects you.

That is hard to say, as everyone is different.  I will say that recovery from these drugs is gradual, and takes time.  Here is a thread that goes into the factors that affect withdrawal:

How Long is Withdrawal Going to Take?

I seriously doubt that.  You are quite young, and this in not likely.

I'm very sorry to hear about the frequent crying.  Please realize, that as distressing as this is, it is a typical withdrawal symptom.  I have a lot of crying spells with my withdrawal as well, although they got worse when I lost a dear pet and dear friend all in the same month.  However, I see this a s a good sign that my emotions are coming back, and I'm not as apathetic as I was.  This should eventually fade away in time.

I've given you quite a bit of information to digest here.  The main thing that we need to recover is patience, and time.  Hang in there, and keep us posted on how you are doing.

Hi Bea81, You are at the right place to get answers and help.  I hear the panic in you introduction.  I know it is hard to stay calm when it feels like you are out of control and everything is falling apart, YOU JUST DON'T FEEL GOOD.  There is a ton of valuable information here.  You can empower yourself with educating yourself.  I know I felt empowered to learn about what was happening to me.  How the drugs were effecting my brain, my central nervous system and what are some of the things I can do to help myself.  It is also helpful for me to go on the symptoms and self care form and see that other people are experiencing similar symptoms.  That is were I found others that were experiencing that intense fear that you were talking about.  I also felt that intense fear.

Patience and acceptance will really help as you go through this.

Take care of yourself and know that you are not alone.

My head is chaos so I will try to do this as tidy and short as possible. The last 18-24 months I have been on Zoloft 200 mg & Oksazepam 45 mg daily. I did not make any changes with these two medications at all before my tap off on zoloft. BUT 3 years ago I did go from 150 mg up to 200 mg Zoloft cause of sudden and worsening brain zaps. Yes, I know that was a stupid decition since I've belived for years now that these drugs have NOT helped me they may instead have made me worse.

I started cutting down on Zoloft about 5 months ago, from 200 mg to 150 mg witch went fine, in fact I felt better and had less brain zaps and fatigue. After a month I went from 150 mg Zoloft to 100 mg Zoloft and still felt good with even less brain zaps. After another months I went down from 100 mg Zoloft to 50 mg Zoloft and thats when I started to feel sick but not to bad. Then 3 weeks to a month later from 50 mg Zoloft to 25 mg Zoloft until I went of them completely almost 3 weeks ago. I have not made any changes on Oksazepam and I am not on any other types of medication.

I want to thank you all for the amazing work you do. For me to get this help from you have given me very much needed hope. The support and also all the info I have found on this site means the world to me, so thank you so so much.

On a last note:
Yesterday was a OK day.
I got to work out
(I have worked out 6 days a week for the last 3 years but havent managed to do that much for the last 3 months and it makes me depressed since workout is like medicin to me)

I had no crying spells!

My mood felt overall more stable and good.

Today has not been to bad but I did not have energy to work out and I've had that "wanting to cry lump in my throat" a couple of times during the day.

I will be back with more info.

I to have been on antidepressants for over 20 years....(you can look at my introduction and see how many were tried and how I got to were I am now) I tried to come off several times and crashed.  I can only wonder if it was treated as withdrawal maybe I would not  been drugged for the last 20 years.  I can't dwell on it because it makes me sad and very angry.  There is success stories for long time med users here that can encourage us to keep going forward and look forward to the rest of our lives drug free..  We will get through this......We are strong.........

You can personally email me if you want...

@Bea81it sounds truly awful.  What a terrible thing to go through.  These drugs are very potent.

Before I can advise you further, I need very specific details on what were the severe side effects that you said you had, before you started tapering off the Zoloft this year. Your quotes above indicate that you had an adverse reaction to the Zoloft.

Have you been on any other medications besides the Zoloft and the Oxazepam?

Hi Greatful and sorry I've been slow at responding. I had a really bad day yesterday with crying spells, BUT not as bad as they were only a week ago. That intense sense of fear, or should I say horror also hit me a handful of times last night. Today tho I am a lot better. I'm getting less and less scared and more and more confindent I will make it out of this and be better and healthier than I have been for many many years. And a lot of it is thanks to you and the others responding to my thread. I cant begin to thank you or explain how much the kindness and support means to me so a simple thank you so much will have to do. How are you doing these days? I will also update this thread with some good things that are happening in the middle of the horror of this withdrawl. Thank you again for taking the time to ask me how I am.

I had a small window for a few days last week.  Then the depression and anxiety came back on Saturday.  That depression is so hard to take at times.  I know that you struggle with that also.  Today I have been working on accepting and telling myself I can live with the discomfort.  It sure does take a toll on your mind and body.

Yes, that intense fear is awful.  So is the panic, depression, anxiety, intrusive thoughts, obsessing, any physical symptoms ,ocd,  the list goes on.  Are we having fun yet............... YES WE CAN DO THIS

Yes we do need to be there for each other and lift each other up.  I am so glad for SA.  If we didn't have the caring support and encouragement from others that know what we are going through it would be very lonely and very hard to do on your own......

So I also want to thank you.  If you want you look up my into page,  Go to the top of the form and put in greatful in the search bar.  Once you open my form you can follow by clicking on follow. You will get a notification when something new is posted on it.

Hello, Bea. Did you have these same adverse effects when you started Zoloft 20 years ago? Have you had them all the time you were taking Zoloft? If not, when did they appear?

Did you start any other drugs at the time these adverse effects first appeared?

Did you ever accidentally forget to take a dose, or skip a day or two? If so, how often did you do this?

We are asking you these questions to find out if reinstatement of a little Zoloft might be something you could try to reduce the withdrawal symptoms you are feeling.

Hello Altostrata.

Yes I had these effects starting on Zoloft 20 years ago. They stopped after about 6 months. Then they gradualy came back about 4 years ago and that led me to up my dose from 150 mg to 200 mg.

No I did not take any other drugs when this started 4 years ago.

I have in the past very few times forgotten to take Zoloft but we are talking no more than a handful of times over many many years. I would know in the evening if I had forgotten to take them cause the brain zaps would go crazy.

I doubt it would help me with a little bit of Zoloft at this point since I am convinced I was in tolerance withdrawl when I decided to quit them. I belive they have made me sicker maybe all along but at least for the last 5 years.

The part I wanted to mention is a bit awkward but its such a shock to me that I belive I should say it so..

At the end of this tap off and when getting of them and up until this date I can very easy reach orgasms. Its like I have been numbed for 20 years and whitout even knowing it. I know this can be a common side effect yet I didnt even think about this while on them and its been a strange experience learning that me being numb for so many years was not me but these drugs. If this part is not okay for me to share then please let me know and I will remove it.

Another thing I notice is my social anexiety is less bad. And I feel more confident when it comes to putting my foot down and have less of an  "sorry for living" attitude.

I need to point out I have a long and severe history of social anexiety coming from a bad childhood and I have been very much bottled up in my emotions for years allowing people to treat me badly only cause I was terrified out of my mind of confrontation.

So something good is happening here in the midst of all the discomfort.

Zoloft 200 mg: 2001-2021

Oxazepam 45 mg: 2001-2021.

Was on both these drugs for 20 years. Tapped of Zoloft in mid April 2021 and went of them the beginning of June 2021. I am still on Oxazepam.

Tolerance withdrawal is not relevant, but it sounds like Zoloft was never a good drug for you.

It's very good that your sexual response returned.

What is your daily oxazepam schedule? Were you put on oxazepam to counter effects of Zoloft?

Please be sure to tell your doctor about all the adverse effects of the drug that you've experienced for so long.

Hi @Greatful. Thank you so much for checking up on me and sorry again for late reply. I just came from the ER after two days with the worst panic I have ever experienced. And that should say a lot cause I know fear and anxiety to well ;-) I will get therapy as soon as they have someone available and Im still in shock over this since I have thought for help for years and didnt really expect anything to come from the er trip today. Yes I am suicidal and I chose to go stay with my mother so to not be alone. My partner had to go on a work trip today and me who normaly loves my alone time am now to scared to be alone. Sorry for my rambling, typos and for being all over the place but thats how my mind is these days. I dont know why it is so bad now?.. Its no more than three weeks when I told a friend Im suprised at how well my withdrawl is going. And now this. I desperate for only an hour without this horror type of fear that comes over me, it is unlike nothing else. I also feel like a burden to those around me and feel like friendships and other bonds are gonna get lost cause of this. Im quite paranoid and its gotten worse the last week. I question everybody and their intensions and also wonder if they will leave me cause of this. Im desperate for sleep too. Last night I fell asleep for about 15 minutes only to wake up to this numbing fear were it feels like someone pours ice wather down my back. I need to go read more of your posts and also look at the link you attached. Im sure I will find help in it. How are you??

@Bea81 I am so sorry you are having such a hard time.  I have been struggling the last several days also, so I can really feel your pain.  Panic and fear are very much a part of the  withdrawal. Remind yourself that fear is just a feeling  and it can not hurt you. Don't fight the fear, thoughts and anxiety,  just let them come into your mind, then tell yourself these are just thoughts, feelings and they have no power over you and they can not hurt you. Remember to breathe slow deep breathes. Can  you find some calming affirmation to tell yourself,  Like I am a worthwhile person, or I am loved or this to shall pass.  Anything positive.

I am so glad that you can stay with your mother and not be alone.  How long will you partner be gone?

Your friends will be there when you are ready to be around people.  Your mind is not thinking clearly right now.  You are not a burden and you are very much loved.  Try not to think to far ahead, work on getting through this moment then the next minute.  It will pass.

Go and find successful stories to read.  I read  Areoman yesterday and found some hope.  I heard that Shep The moderator story "Leaving Plato's Cave is good.

Can you go for a small walk outside? Or even sit outside or by a window to hear the birds sing?

Wrap your arms around your shoulders and squeeze, feel the hug?  That is me hugging you🤗

Please keep posting if you feel the need to talk.  Don't suffer in silence.  Is it okay if I ask another member who has been a great help to me to chime in with support.  She herself has gone through a very tough time.  I think if you can get just a few to lean on it will help to not feel so alone.  Her pen name is Mia1

@GreatfulWow this was weird cause I read Areoman story 2 hours ago!! And yes it give me so much hope 😊

And please invite Mia1, that would be wonderful!

I have been sitting outside with my sister and her doggy, she came by to see our mum so its been a good hour or more with them. I was right, I should be around people right now 😊 My partner will be gone for a week so I will stay here for at least 3-4 days, it feels best that way.

And thank you for the hug, you are a good person 💙

@Bea81  Hi I am glad you have family that are there to support you.  It is very nice to get outside in nature, it lifts the spirit.

Are you feeling any better.  I know how quickly things can change.  Windows and waves is what they say.🤪

I went into a big slump.  Anxiety, very tense, nausea, and depression. some anger coming in.  I  get suicidal thoughts too.  It is hard to think you will never ever feel better. I  guess I will have to listen to my own advice.  Take 1 minute at a time.  Funny when you are giving the advice it sounds to simple, just do this and this.  When you are feeling bad it isn't so easy to do.  What should my mantra be for today.  I am a worthwhile person?

Since this all started for me last fall.  I have lost about 20lbs. The Lexapro I ended up on 5mg completely took my apatite away. What little there was.  I guess if there is a up side to it is I don't crave sweets anymore.  I am getting a little concerned that I'll keep losing weight.  Lucky I had some extra pounds to spare.

Have a good day

Hi Bea,

Stopping by to offer my support. It looks like you did a really fast taper, it’s not surprising you feel this way. The good news is that every day you are getting better even if you can’t feel it. You WILL get there. I had a lot of similar issues when I first started, especially anxiety and fear. I know it’s hard in the beginning because it is so scary and confusing but if you can get to a place of true acceptance of what’s happening you can give yourself some relief. It won’t take your symptoms away but they will feel more manageable. Accept that these are your symptoms today and know that they will not last forever. They really won’t.

As you may already know the more you resist anxiety and panic the more intense it will become. It will also last longer. So it’s the same idea, accept the anxiety. As @Greatfulmentioned the thoughts creating the anxiety are just thoughts, they cannot hurt you. The sensations that anxiety and panic bring are just that, sensations. Learn to sit with your thoughts and feelings without reacting to them. It’s the reaction that is causing your suffering, not that actual anxiety. I recently wrote about anxiety on my thread, you may want to check it out.

I definitely recommend a daily meditation practice to help cultivate awareness of thoughts and it also helps to slow the brain down. It’s a great way to start practicing non reactivity to thoughts and sensations. Even 15 minutes a day can have far reaching effects.

You are going to be okay. This is a great opportunity to get to know who you are without medication. It’s a great opportunity to learn how to manage “uncomfortable” emotions. We all have an innate wisdom that guides us. This whole experience can be transformed into a great opportunity for you, as hard as it may be to believe that right now. Put the work in.

I’m here to help you anyway I can!!

Been on medication since 1999. Previous medications include Remeron, Zoloft, Celexa, Lexapro, Xanax, Ativan, Valium, Ability.
