Other members have reported experience similar increase in symptoms.

When changing anything it is always a good idea to do it gradually.

@ChessieCat that's the thing, I thought I was going gradually. It just shows how slow and painful this journey can be.

History of depression and anxiety. Symptoms of PTSD. 1998-1999 Venlafaxine 2006-2007 Prozac.2013-15 Sertraline 50mg. 2015 cross-tapered to citalopram 20mg. 2015-2021 Citalopram 20mg (brief increase to 30mg for 2/3 months in 2019. 01/2021 Dropped from 20mg to 10mg, back up to 20mg til June. 25/6/21 stopped CT. Started 50mg 5htp after a week without citalopram in the hope this would balance out my serotonin levels. After 3 days increased to 100mg 5htp. 11/7/21 Stopped 5htp with the intention of reinstating citalopram at 1mg. 16/7/21 Reinstated cit at 1mg. 2/8/21 Increased dose to 2mg. 28/11/21 10% reduction to 1.8mg.

My brain is having real trouble processing information, like there are some crossed wires or something. It takes me a while to 'see' what's really happening in a situation. Things that have been done/said by me I think have been done/said by someone else. It's difficult to describe, and it's quite disturbing, like my brain is 'breaking down' or something. Eventually I realise the 'truth' of a situation' but it takes so long for my brain to process what's actually going on. It does feel like I'm starting to go crazy! I'm assuming it's another wonderful symptom of WD?

I experience the same thing. Things are slow to connect, conversations, what was I doing, how do I do it, what is happening around me. I always think it’s just “me”, I have to keep reminding myself I wasn’t like this before tapering. Although my sertraline was pooping out me.

hang in there @kat66, you’re not alone.

Thanks @Believer, it's quite a worrying symptom, because while I was having some cognitive fog, this feels on a different level, like there's something really going wrong in my brain (dementia?). When your sertraline was pooping out, what was happening, were you getting breakthrough depression etc?

Hi kat,

This symptom sounds very familiar to me unfortunately... it is extremely annoying at work. Before I can think of something my colleagues have answered/solved/taken care of..

Like reality is happening and my brain tries to make something out of it. Other people moved on before I can take in the situation.  This happened to me before in wd but recently it is becoming  worse.

You're definitely not alone!

Cheers

Others members have mentioned the same thing.  I can remember one of them saying that she couldn't remember the word for broom and ended up saying "the thing you sweep the floor with".  I've had it happened to me too.

I think the more you worry about it (which is stress) the worse it can be/longer it takes to recover from.

Imagine if you were [...] to rebuild the tower - WHILE people were coming and going and [...] to work in the building!  You'd have to set up a temporary elevator - but when you needed to fix part of that area, you'd have to tear down that elevator and set up a temporary elevator somewhere else. And so on. You'd have to build, work around, then tear down, then build again, then work around, then build... ALL while people are coming and going, ALL while the furniture is being replaced, ALL while the walls are getting repainted... ALL while [...] is going on INSIDE the building. No doubt it would be chaotic. That is EXACTLY what is happening with windows and waves.  The windows are where the body has "got it right" for a day or so - but then the building shifts and the brain works on something else - and it's chaos again while another temporary pathway is set up to reroute function until repairs are made.

No depression, just minor brain zaps. GP said it wasn't working anymore, switched me to bupropion IR then to ER because I kept forgetting afternoon dose, bad adverse reaction so back to sertraline and here I am, depressed, anxious, cog fog, etc. I believe these drugs cause harm, I’ve experienced it. So just trying to get off and pray for recovery.

I'm assuming it's another wonderful symptom of WD?

Hi @Kat66

I've had something like this intermittently and yes, I'd consider it a WD symptom.

For me it often goes together with DP/DR, which makes everything around me feel like it's happening in slow motion and underwater, very alienating and weird. This entails a processing delay as I have to sort of make my way through layers of alternate reality, like multiple levels of special effects in a movie, and there's a lag while I'm consciously struggling through the disorientation to put the pieces together to form some sort of picture of what is actually going on. By the time I've constructed some semblance of reality, things have already changed and the world is newly fragmented.

I don't know if that sounds anything like what you experience, but I can certainly relate to your description in your post.

Oh, you know what it's like? Do you cook/bake? It feels like when eggs curdle or a sauce separates or you're whisking something that just won't emulsify... Like the world around me just doesn't gel and everything looks and feels funny, and if I try to concentrate it splinters further rather than comes together. And when I'm in that state it's very, very difficult to process information.

It's such a jarring, isolating experience and can feel quite scary. I'm sorry you're dealing with this.

You're not going crazy. It's just WD. It's temporary and it will pass. It gets better <3

Anxiety makes it worse, so try as much as possible to acknowledge - accept - float.

Grounding techniques are good, too. Anything to get into your body and connect to your physical self.

It also helps me to slow way down. Like really, really slow, trying to be mindful and present with movement and action, whatever it is.

How are those cold showers going, by the way? Sometimes that can help with DP/DR and getting back into one's body.

Hang in there, Kat. You're getting through this and doing so well putting one foot in front of the other!

In solidarity and support,

A.

@Ariel it sounds like what you experience is similar to what I describe - it's not just forgetting words, it's more profound than that, like your cooking comparison - it's like the whole world is fragmented and nothing makes sense, nothing 'gels' as you say. The DP/DR happens when you're trying to make sense of it all, that sense of unreality that's often there when you're trying to make sense of a situation. It's all very unnerving. Yeah the cold showers are now part of my regular routine, thanks for asking, and the temperature of the water doesn't bother me at all now. I don't flinch - I just relax into it. That said, I don't know if they're doing me any good - but the sensation is quite addictive and apparently they're good for you so I'll carry on.

@ChessieCatthanks for the reminder that this is all part of the brain healing. Sometimes you forget all that stuff and simply think you're losing your marbles.

@jozeffthanks for making me feel less alone. It's reassuring to know I'm not the only one.

@Believeragain, thanks for making me feel less alone in this.

Thank you all for replying, sending love and healing to all xx

@Ariel @ChessieCat @jozeff @Believer I have an example of this weird brain disconnect/broken brain thing I was on about. I was walking my dog today and had the thought 'I need to take my top off as I'm a bit sweaty', but instead of processing the thought as 'I need to take my top off...when I get home', my brain processed it as 'I need to take my top off right now' - in the middle of the walk. Weird, like my brain's not working. Of course I know why it's not working (the building analogy) but all the same, it's quite disconcerting!

PTSD diagnosis October 2023. 11/11/23 started EMDR therapy for PTSD. Multiple unsuccessful attempts to taper off citalopram. Vegan, otherwise healthy lifestyle. Other medications; tapering off combined HRT. Other supplements; magnesium glycinate, vegan omega3. Completely OFF caffeine (since July 21). Finding it difficult to completely give up alcohol but haven’t had any since 25/12/23. Main symptoms; crushing depression, anhedonia/emotional anesthesia, irritability, rage, anxiety/fear, intrusive thoughts, cognitive fog, inability to focus, restlessness and some insomnia

Thanks @Believer, it's quite a worrying symptom, because while I was having some cognitive fog, this feels on a different level, like there's something really going wrong in my brain (dementia?). When your sertraline was pooping out, what was happening, were you getting breakthrough depression etc?

Hi Kat, i have the same issue I am also really scared that I develop dementia? My brain is stuck and I can’t proceed informations. The people think I must be stupid because I don’t recognize the simple things. I have brain fog and people think I am egoistic because I only talk about myself, but this isn’t true I can’t understand the information they give me. So I can’t help them like before. If you like you can contact  me

Hi Guest yes! That’s the same thing I get. Did you read Chessiecat’s post a bit further up from Believer’s post, about the healing brain being like a building in the middle of construction? I found this analogy very comforting, because it made me realise it’s all part of the WD process.

Guest when you say you’re confused, can you tell me more? I know this symptom is not nice but we have to remember this is all part of WD and in time the brain will heal.

I don’t know what is me and what is WD. I feel like a different person. I don’t know what thought is mine and what is WD

i really don’t know how to discribe this all

I can totally relate to feeling like a different person and also the blurred lines of what is WD and what is us. It’s an extremely confusing state to be in. Hang in there, you’re not alone x

It comes and goes. If I am in a window the feeling subsides somewhat, but it's always there to some extent. I suspect this feeling will be here until I am healed from WD. I can so relate to feeling dead inside and our brains not working. My memory, cognitive logical functioning are both shot. It's all WD, it will get better. I try to accept the symptoms as WD and therefore temporary, that does help get me through the worst. Hang in there x

I am in a dirty window at the moment, able to do a little more, exercise a little more, feel not quite as despairing, but still feeling quite emotionally numb. It doesn't take much to sensitise my system though. When the news came through a couple of days ago that the Queen was gravely ill, and then died, I experienced a huge release of unexpected emotion and couldn't stop crying for the best part of 24 hours. All I could do was just lie on the couch and function at a bare minimum. I couldn't make the smallest decision, make any phone calls, or speak. It was like I was frozen. I had zero energy and fell into a dark hole again. Today, after some reasonable sleep, I feel a little better, but the last two days served as a reminder that it doesn't take much to set off the symptoms again when you're in a window.

@Kat66

We sure are sensitive in many ways now....Emotionally and physically...That's okay to take the time to feel the emotions and let them work through....They will pass and feel less intense with time.....

I’m sure I’ve read on here that the most healing happens in a wave. If that’s the case there’s a buttload of healing happening at the moment. I feel like I’m barely holding it together. The anger, dread, anxiety and panic have ramped up to level 11. I honestly don’t know how I’m getting through the days at the moment. Let’s just say everything’s been deployed. Lavender on pillow, lavender essential oil, lemon balm tea and kalms coming out of my ears, meditation music on permanent loop, mantras (‘I am safe’,  ‘they’re just thoughts’). The urge to down whisky is strong but I’m resisting. It hasn’t helped that I found a lump in one of my boobs last weekend and have an appointment to check it out next week. I feel overwhelmed by WD symptoms and hope they calm down soon or I might lose the plot completely!

I am very sorry to hear this Kat.  Yes your brain is definitely healing. I wanna say you’re doing a great job on non-drug coping techniques and staying alcohol free. Just try to remember that if you take a drink it’s only going to exacerbate the problem and you’ll suffer even more for weeks even though it may give you a temporary reprieve. I’m praying for you and rooting for you. This too shall pass.

Please do not private message me.  Only tag me for urgent questions about tapering and reinstating - thank you.

@Kat66  Hang in there Kat...It truly is so hard to believe how these drugs can caused so much change and disruption to our brains...You are doing a great job battling your way through this wave...It may seem like this is more than you can handle but you can do it....You have been here before and it's passed and it will again....I know how easy it is to get overwhelmed and feel worn out but try to stay in today and focus on getting through it.

I'm clomping along next to you.....♥️

So, I got the all clear re the lumps in my breast. Turns out they were benign cysts. The weird thing is, I don't feel any kind of joy at this news. Sure I feel relieved, but I realised soon after the initial spike of relief that BANG, I'm still in WD. After the stress of this little health scare and the emotional rollercoaster of the last 10 days since the Queen's death, I'm in an amped up, over stimulated state, so lots of dread, panic, anger, shakiness, and irritability ramped up to 11. Hopefully it'll all settle down soon.

Sending love and healing thoughts to everyone xxxx

What great news! I’m so happy for you. Hopefully your system will settle having that out of the way. It really floors me how my body responds to even the slightest stress, things that wouldn’t have stressed me before this nightmare. Do you find that to be true for you?

Do you have any stress relieving practices that you find helpful? Breathing exercises can be helpful when I’m really ramped up and even focusing on relaxing my body when I feel tense. Which right now is most of the time. There are times when I can feel my mind/body relax on its own but there is no rhyme or reason to it. Do you experience anything similar?

@Kat66I am so happy you got the all clear on the lumps. Did they diagnose you with fibrocystic breast disease? I have had that since I was about 20. It can be very painful but fish oil helps the cysts I find. Waves can be so overwhelming and defeating. I am here if you need to chat or need extra support. I have been going through my own health issues and I definitely think the stress of that induces strong waves. I’m hoping the positive news about your breasts will calm your nervous system and pull you through to a window.  I am praying for your healing and for calm and peace to surround you. ❤️

At least you are aware of the things that are making WD worse.  I found that recognising the other issues really helped and reduced the additional stress of worrying about what it was.

No, all they said was that they were little benign cysts and that if they grow or get painful, they can aspirate them....I'm sorry to hear you've been dealing with that issue yourself for some time - I would imagine your stress levels aren't helped by dealing with this! Thank you, same goes, if you want to chat about anything in private I'm happy to listen x

Hugs

Yes! The past 10 days have been testament to that. If I'm alone and quiet, I can just about cope, but the slightest thing that goes wrong, then BANG! the symptoms are out of control.

Stress relieving practices that work....hmmmm....I'm listening to a playlist called 'Pure Meditation' which is one step up from white noise...it's about the only thing that takes the stress down a notch at the moment. I can't listen to anything other than this right now. When I have the energy, a short 20 minute workout helps too. I have also found some success with deep breathing. I breathe in for 4 then out for longer - that genuinely seems to to take the edge off. Comfort TV (currently Desperate Housewives and Frasier) does help to calm me down a bit too!

This helps too -

Hi Kat,

How are you faring? I’ve had a tough couple weeks, still trying to learn to pace myself. Doesn’t take much to tip the apple cart. Feeling okayish yesterday and so far this morning. I’m fighting the temptation to “do” something and just continue to take things slow and easy. Although I don’t think I can get much slower. 🤣

Thinking about you.
Hugs

Hey @Believer thanks for checking in ❤️I’m sorry to hear you’ve had a rough time of it recently. I know only too well how little it takes to upset the apple cart. I’m at that stage (have been for lord knows how long) too. My life has become so small. If I’m having a ‘good’ day I will be able to acknowledge the little wins. It may be something like, I’ve dusted the bedside tables and made the bed, or I’ve hoovered the downstairs floors and walked the dog. On a bad day I’ll only be able to think ‘I’ve achieved nothing, when will this nightmare end?’ I’ve become a master at pacing myself, taking lots of time in between tasks to rest. As a result I’ve been able to restart an exercise program of 20 mins a day. As soon as I start to feel tired doing anything I will stop.

It’s difficult to put this experience into words sometimes, and every week it feels different to the last. On some level at the moment I am able to function like a ‘normal’ person, but underneath the facade I feel as broken as ever, but somehow I’m able to keep the two parts separate.

I’m glad you’re feeling okayish right now and managing to resist the temptation to overdo it.

Big hug back xx
