CharlieBrown13: Reducing venlafaxine and escitalopram

@CharlieBrown13 Hang in there, please. You will survive. Okay, now as to what to do: My personal experience has been that reinstatement of the antidepressant at a smaller dose helps. Of course, the decision is yours to make together with your doctor.

I wish you resilience and strength.

So, it’s not better with the diazepam, I’m much more sensitive to noises now as I was anyway. My body is burning, it feels like fire in my stomach and guts.
Since I’m now labeled suicidal, the doctors go no longer with wait and see. I have to take a small dose of olanzapin twice daily, otherwise they would move me to the closed ward, I no longer have the possibility to go out anyway.

I'm sorry, @CharlieBrown13 I would not mention suicidality to any doctors unless you want this type of forced intervention.

It's possible olanzapine will help. Hang in there.

A quick update.
I was released from the clinic on Tuesday.  My main symptoms are now massive fear (sometimes about almost everything, telephoning, texting, music, talking about my symptoms, that's why I couldn't write anything for a few days).

At the same almost always the nerves in my upper body and abdomen are burning, before that I usually get chills.
I then can also think very badly and have the feeling that I'm going somehow crazy, everything is so mixed up in my head.  Yesterday I had that for most of the day and today I woke up with it.
As medication I take 1.25 mg olanzapine.  And I apologize to everyone that I did not write back, I couldn’t, even that caused fear.
I so hope it will be at least a little easier soon ...

Thank you for your kind words!!

Its really so weird. You know in your brain, it’s not „real“ fear, unfortunately it feels like it…

I think it helps a little bit, yes. But not very much.

I wouldn’t even know which one to reinstate, and both would be a very bad idea, I think…

Well, the stupid doctors should know , but they are clueless…. I am so mad at pdocs who just put us through this suffering…. Absolutely normal people with physiological brains going nuts after being “treated” with their “beneficial ADs”.  Idiots! Sorry but I am really upset with docs prescribing ADs and not knowing how dangerous can be.

I don’t know…. I am surprised I am still alive to be honest. I am mostly in bed counting every minute till time for sleep. I do sleep very good, the insomnia didn’t last long thank God. I used to work full time as a neuroscientist, raise my boys, take care of my house, travel with my husband, exercise, dance, socialize…. Few weeks on Zoloft and before I knew it I was bedridden suffering…. But I know brain has plasticity and will bounce back one day …. It’s in shock now after he drugs and takes time to get out of the shock and reach homeostasis again. I just hope we can endure this torture till healing comes. For me the mental Akathisia, the chemical fear and depersonalization it’s  a hellish torturous combination but I pray to God for recovery and I ll include you in my prayers. I have a friend who does illegal drugs on and off , he is fine out there living his life, I have never had any illegal drugs, not even smoked a cigarette ever in my life, and I am bedridden suffering from 3.5 weeks of Zoloft. These drugs are evil…..

You could be me!!

I don't have a husband or kids, but two years ago I was a happy oncologist who worked full-time and had lots of friends.  Now I'm kind of trying to survive  the days.

I have the depersonalization, too, on top of the fear and when I try to think about it it all gets all confused in my head.
I don't know how much longer I can take this, but the alternative is not good either .. I will pray for you too !!

Warm greetings and lots of love ❤️

God, what these drugs do to people. I am so sorry for u and myself that we trusted psychiatrists. I always had a bad opinion for mind altering drugs , but I was told so many times by so many doctors that they are safe and beneficial and that the benefits outweigh the negatives…. Hmmmm let’s see before zoloft I had chest tightness due to stress related work and after Zoloft I have non chest tightness, no work, no ability to raise my kids, no ability to be a wife or a friend.,. Just a bedridden suffering vegetable….. My kids wonder what happened to their mom and they are too young to understand “adverse drug reaction and WD”. I wish u recovery and getting back to your job. I just want to get well to raise my boys, I don’t care about work or anything anymore …. By the way the symptom u describe of everything being confused in ur brain doesn’t sound like DP (that’s a good thing cause DP is hell on earth, u have no connection to ur own brain, or your surroundings, u don’t recognize ur own face or hands). I had this “all thoughts confused like my brain is going nuts and it subsided. It really felt like my brain was just rearranging things and until the rearrangement was over I felt I was going literally crazy.

Dear @Altostrata,

here I am again…

I have a question about a topic that concerns me very much right now:

long before I even took an antidepressant, I had a burnout in the middle of last year, I think because of the severe back pain, my mother's illness and the stress at work.

I was completely exhausted and woke up almost every morning at 5:00 am with a racing heart (this was probably also due to cortisol), until now I have not recovered from this exhaustion.
8 weeks ago I had a neurostress profile made while still being given the antidepressants.

If the body is still “burned out”, and it looks like that, the adrenal gland may simply no longer do its job as it would be necessary, how can the body and mind be able to heal then without support?
Then maybe magnesium and fish oil are just not enough, even though I’m in withdrawal (which is really horrible) and theC4D70387-1D3E-4894-91F6-B0D336C89EE8.thumb.jpeg.9fec825dbc63b8632cda92cecfe1347b.jpeg nervous system is super stressed?

Thank you for your answer in advance, as always I appreciate that very much!

Hello, @CharlieBrown13. If you're having surges of anxiety, your adrenal glands are on the job!

These symptoms are very familiar to those of us who have experienced neurological upset from drug mishaps. Your nervous system is saying it's sensitive and wants to be protected from sharp noises and other stimuli. You might find dim light and very soft meditation music to be soothing.

Be patient, your nervous system needs to settle down from that excessive stimulation from the antidepressants.

How are you feeling, having taken 1.25mg olanzapine for a few days? What happened to the diazepam?

This is not medical advice. Discuss any decisions about your medical care with a knowledgeable medical practitioner.

Thank you for answering me, Altostrata.

I’m really not sure if it helps, sometimes the fear is a little bit better a few hours after taking the olanzapin, sometimes not, I can’t see a regular pattern.

Last week in hospital they gave me the choice between diazepam 3x/day 5 mg (puh!!) and the olanzapin. So I took the olanzapin, but not in the dose they wanted me to (my doctor was off for a few days, so it was another doctor, who wasn’t informed)

I so hope this terrible fear will subside.

I’m living with good friends now for the next weeks since I couldn’t be alone at home.

What if I’m just going crazy? It feels like that right now. What if my nervous system can’t heal itself? It’s such a torture.

What should I do?

Its a little bit easier in the evenings. I sleep about seven hours each day, that’s not the problem right now. It’s the thoughts in my brain.

I think that you can sleep well and that it becomes easier in the evening is a good sign.

why should you only be mad between waking up and the evening? your thoughts follow your feelings. it actually means that feelings follow thoughts. but it goes both ways.

I am also so hopeless when the feelings of fear overwhelm me, unfortunately every time it happens. even though I know it's temporary, every time I have trouble telling myself it's over. my thoughts follow my feelings. I'm still looking for acceptance and levitation.

you are really having a hard time and it now looks like it will stay that way forever. But it won't, it's getting better. and at some point you will be at a point like me now, where there are windows of several days and it is still difficult when a wave comes for a few hours.

please don't make any decisions when you are feeling really bad. wait until it gets a little easier, like in the evening. please hold on and be patient. your nervous system will calm down.

You are not going crazy… but I agree it feels like ur loosing ur mind … I have had all kind of bizarre thoughts after I took this poison and worst after quitting … it is your brain recalibrating and unfortunately you are feeling the rearrangements that make u feel like ur loosing ur mind.

Many people think they've gotten broken brains from adverse reactions to psychiatric drugs. Please tell yourself to stop thinking that way. You will slowly recover from the adverse drug reaction.

Why did you reject diazepam? Initially, you had a good reaction to it.

On 11/18/2021 at 12:55 AM, CharlieBrown13 said:

I took the diazepam 0.5 mg at 8.00 am, now it’s 9.30 and it’s a little bit better. Should I take it every day, one drop?

My doctor (who doesn’t know about the diazepam) now suggested olanzapin in a small dose, what do you think about that?

Diazepam is a much safer drug than olanzapine, which can cause movement disorders, metabolic derangement, etc.

I took the olanzapin because I felt I was developing a psychosis, I still feel like that. I take 0.6 mg 2x/ day. Should I stop the olanzapin and change to diazepam? And if so, should I taper it? I take it now for 5 1/5 days. And if I take the diazepam, would you recommend to take it regularly, I.e. every other day?

I’m so very unsure about what to do…

I don’t want to take the olanzapin, in fact, I hate to take it. But it’s so difficult to make any decisions about my medication, because my brain doesn’t work properly.

Just thought of telling u that it will not make a difference on dependency if u take Diazapam every day or every other day, due to its long half life. I though I was going psychotic after quitting Zoloft but it was severe depersonalization and an antipsychotic wouldn’t help …. Thank God I figured out I had DP cause doctors had no idea what I was suffering from. Even when I told them what it was they looked it up and agreed it was DP but were insisting it came from the trauma of loosing two family members 10 years ago and not from the recent use of Zoloft!!! Go figure!! I got DP from smg that happened 10 years ago…. I understood I was alone in this and no help could come from doctors and I only said to my doctor “ please educate urself, depersonalization is clearly stated as a rare effect in the leaflet of some ssris” . I am telling u all these to underline that whatever diagnosis u got from the doctors is probably wrong and it’s all due to ur withdrawal from both an SSRi and an snri. Praying for ur recovery and mine….

In that case wouldn’t it be a better idea a reinstatement of a low dose of the snri u were on before instead of an antipsychotic or diazepam? Just smg to consider … Stay strong … I am sorry u have to suffer this nightmare of AD side effects and discontinuation but the vast of people heal, so why should we be an exception and not heal ?

Dear @Altostrata,

again, I’m desperate.

My massive anxiety/ fear about everything is now staying for good, no more relief in the evening. I barely can leave the house for a short walk.
Then I have that terrible burning all over my body, it’s getting more and more intense and diarrhea with the feeling of acid in my guts, also more intense since two days.

I stopped taking Olanzapin three days ago after 5 1/2 days of taking it (max 1.25 mg) because I felt O poisoned myself even more, and took diazepam 0.5 mg on Friday, today I took 0.25 mg. I don’t feel any relief and since my body s burning the whole time now, I can’t say what exactly causes it or if the diazepam makes it even worse.

What would you recommend me to do now?

It feels like acid is eating me up from inside.

Thanks in advance!

@CharlieBrown13 , You will start to get better very soon. This is the pattern. It gets worse at first, and then it gets better. There is a window after a wave. Just hold on and wait for now. You will get better very soon.

Are these symptoms still happening?

Have they changed at all, reduced or increased?

Are you experiencing any other symptoms?

Have you drunk any alcohol?

Thank you so much, @ChessieCat

Yes, the burning comes and goes, it’s like a sunburn from within, now even the scalp, the eyes, the nose and mouth. It’ mostly  there for a few hours and then it subsides a little and then it comes back. It’s always accompanied by chills, sometimes visual disturbances.

Yesterday it was better, I even could go outside for a little walk. Then it started again last night at 10.00 pm and didn’t subside. All in all, they’re increasing, but sometimes the waves are smaller waves (I wouldn’t describe these times as windows)

I’ve diarrhea in the morning, 4-5 times, this morning I vomited. Very sensitive to noises. Massive brain zaps and tinnitus (since the beginning of October)

My brain is not functioning properly, especially in the night it’s very confused.

And I have that massive anxiety/ fear of everthing, telephoning, leaving the house, watching tv, everything where I have to focus on just triggers it.

No, I don’t drink alcohol, just water and tea

I tried to stop olanzapin last weekend after taking it for 6 days at a low dose (between 0.3 and 1.25 mg), but the anxiety was so overwhelming that I started it again, I take now 0.25 mg twice a day.
