haley, you can cut a 10mg tablet into quarters. Each quarter would be 2.5mg.

haley, do you have another doctor? Any doctor can write the prescription.

I know you feel terrible, but if you don't have another doctor, you should phone your current doctor, tell him you have withdrawal symptoms from Paxil, and demand a prescription of 10mg Paxil.

haley, hang in there. On Monday, can you phone the second doctor, tell her you have withdrawal from Paxil, and ask again for Paxil liquid?

Other than that, there's the emergency room, it's expensive, and they may not understand why they should give you Paxil, either.

Also can i ask what it is when you just can't remember memories, or yourself before all this mess?

I mean I am having horrible memory at the moment. I know i might not be as bad as some people. But i haven't ever felt like a whole different person, like the way i see things, isn't the way i usually see them, that's prolly from this. I need comfort in knowing that i will be myself again. i have forgot how too act like myself. i'm still in the mess. and i hope two months isn't too long too reinstate. Since i was only supposed too be on the meds 3-6 months, but i didn't agree with that. so i quit. it might be my fault, but it's not my fault they never said you will feel like hell, after you quit. maybe i shouldn't have stopped abruptly, but i am dying inside. wish it wouldn't be so hard, for a doctor too listen. i mean i'm tired of trying too do things, only too get offered something i do not want. sorry im venting. I feel sooo lost, like i'll never be normal again. i want too sleep a long sleep. i want too lay in bed, and laugh just too laugh i want too listen too music instead of turning it off, because my head starts screaming., i want me.

Haley,

All that you are experiencing is due to the Paxil withdrawal. It makes some people feel like strangers to themselves and can be very upsetting and scary. You feel very different to yourself, but other people probably dont notice anything different except that you might be more quiet than usual.

These types of perceptual distortions are discussed in other threads as depersonalization / derealization. http://survivingantidepressants.org/index.php?/topic/1292-depersonalization/page__fromsearch__1

ve had times when I can remember things ok, but it feels like it was a different 'me' and I cant connect my current feelings to those feelings of the 'other me'.

This will ease up when you get a little Paxil to stabilize. Alto will walk you through the dosing and particulars. In the mean time, remember that what you are experiencing is typical withdrawal. It feels awful right now, but you will be ok and back to yourself.

haley, withdrawal symptoms can make you feel very, very bad in a lot of ways.

Don't worry, you'll get through this. On Monday, you'll talk to one of your doctors, say you cold-turkeyed, and you have Paxil withdrawal. The ordering code for the liquid is NDC 0029-3215-48. If your doctor won't give you that (she should!!), get 10mg tablets you can cut up.

This is from the American Psychiatric Association practice guidelines (http://survivingantidepressants.org/index.php?/topic/372-2010-apa-practice-guidelines-about-discontinuation/ )

Discontinuation-emergent symptoms include both flu-like experiences such as nausea, headache, light-headedness, chills, and body aches, and neurological symptoms such as paresthesias, insomnia, and “electric shock-like” phenomena. These symptoms typically resolve without specific treatment over 1–2 weeks. However, some patients do experience more protracted discontinuation syndromes, particularly those treated with paroxetine, and may require a slower downward titration regimen.

You can print this out to show to your doctor -- click on the little number at the upper right of this post, and print this post.

Here's a tip: Do not cry when talking to a doctor. Do not get angry. Emotion confuses them. Speak clearly and firmly. Tell her you NEED this medication for withdrawal symptoms because you made a mistake and cold-turkeyed.

Haley,

I understand how you feel, I felt the same things. I even posted some of the same and almost everyone here has, also. I wondered if I would EVER be me again. It will get better, I had to be told the same words that I'm telling you now. These are all typical WD symptoms. I know its awful and it seems like it will never end.

I got better and you will too, but it probably won't happen immediately so don't lose hope! Hang on, hold on! You are young and maybe that will help you heal more quickly, still, it's uncertain how long it will take but it seems youth is a good factor in the processes.

You are not alone! {{{{hugs}}}}

Love,

Thanks again, for all the kind words too everybody.

I don't understand why the psychiatrist prescribed you Celexa when you have Paxil withdrawal syndrome.

You'll have to print out that post above to show him or her -- paroxetine is Paxil.

Whether you decide you want to be on medications in the future and try celexa is a personal decision only you can make.

But taking celexa at this time is very unlikely to accomplish what Alto is suggesting.

The reason for going back on a very low dose of the same drug you were on is for a specific reason. That is to alleviate the paxil withdrawal symptoms you seem to be experiencing.

Feeling overwhelming hopelessness and dread, no sexual drive, and cloudy thinking are very, VERY common withdrawal symptoms. If they started with paxil, you need to heal from the paxil.

Those horrible feelings (I had them too, and I know how awful they are) are NOT permanent. They WILL go away. Don't worry if you don't remember the Haley you used to be. Many of us went through that, and now we feel like ourselves again. But there is a healing process the body has to go through.

Since you apparently need to heal from the changes paxil made in your body, Alto is suggesting taking a little bit (just a little!) of paxil, to heal from paxil not celexa.

It's ironic that to heal from a med you don't like, you need to go off it slowly. But cold-turkeying from a med is too much of a shock for the nervous system in our cases. Going off it gradually - very, very slowly - gives your nervous system much better conditions for healing.

I think someone else here gave a very good analogy. It's like the difference between tapping your car into a brick wall at a low speed, and crashing your car into that brick wall hard at a high speed.

Since celexa is a different drug than paxil there is no way to know if it would stabilize your nervous system temporarily, or whether you would end up with two meds to heal from. Changing meds too often when a person is sensitized from one or more other drugs usually makes problems worse, we've seen.

Seeing how you do on just a tiny dose of the med that triggered the problem (paxil) would help you and us have a better idea what will help your nervous system heal.

Haley.. go back and carefully reread Alto's first response to you. Note what she says about your sensitivity to LSD and what that says about your sensitivity to ADs. There is a very strong possibility you will have another bad reaction. Your reaction to Celexa would probably be the same as the Paxil, only now your body would be traumatized yet a second time. I understand as I'm hypersensitive to changes in serotonin. Not as much as you seem to be, but enough to know I'd never go near another AD as I would be sick for a long time.

From Alto's post:

In fact, if you have a bad trip on acid, that's a sign you should NEVER take an antidepressant, because it indicates you are among the small number of people who are hypersensitive to increases in serotonin (LSD is a serotonergic, like SSRIs).

When I was trying to figure out what to do, the first two docs I saw told me to go back on the AD.. it could not possibly have effected me the way it did. It was not until I saw a neurologist who was very familiar with the way drugs effect people that I found out what had happened. And he told me never to take another AD.. just like Alto's advice. There really is a small group of us who cannot even handle small time limited dosing. I know you did not take the Paxil for more than a month, and who would think you might have been effected the way you were... but given the response to LSD, the odds really are you cannot take any class of AD.

Haley I really feel for you. Paxil withdrawal is hell.

This is my experience, I went on Lexapro from Paxil. It took awhile, but I felt much better and got on with my life.

Glaxo-SmithKline did not send shipments of Paxil to any drugstores in the US on purpose to try and promote Paxil CR. This lasted a good month or more.

Paxil CR is not the same dosage and release factor, and Paxil and I had instant WD, so I opted for Lexapro.

If you cannot get Paxil, then why not try the Celexa. It is an SSRI, like Paxil. Yes they are different, but they are still in the same family of medications.

What I learned from Celexa which I take now is that the maximum dose should not exceed 30mgs.

Actually 20mgs is much better.

If you do take the Celexa start off slow....10 mgs. 15mgs. then 20mgs. if that is what you need to do to rebound.

I know how panicky you feel, it is very frightening, but you have 2 options, try to get the paxil or use the Celexa.

That definitely does not seem right.

Can you make an appointment with one of the other doctors on that list? Maybe one can see you soon. Dr. Burress is close by.

Do you have the receipts for any of your Paxil prescriptions to show a new doctor?

Do you have any refills left on your Paxil prescription? Phone the pharmacy if you don't know. If you do, you may be able to refill it without talking to a doctor.

Alto's idea of showing a new doctor your paxil receipt(s), if you no longer have the bottle with the label, is brilliant!

I just want to add that if you no longer have the receipt for your paxil prescription, the pharmacy that filled it should be able to print out a duplicate or (more likely) a computer print-out list of the meds you got from them this year (or whatever recent time period you specify).

I've had my pharmacy print out a list of all prescription meds they filled for me for the entire year, when I got disorganized and needed documentation for tax purposes. So printing something out for you should be no problem!

ANY M.D. can prescribe paxil.

I spoke with a family doctor, and I guess she asked me if my anxiety and depression were up, and I said yes but I've never had this problem before I got off the medication. And then said i more than likely will not take any other med you hand me.

And they insisted on me taking celexa.

But i am soo mad, that nobody that is supposed too "help" Wil actually do their part.

Haley,

Do you have an old prescription bottle with the PAXIL (PAROXETINE) label

or pharmacy receipt?

Do you remember which pharmacy you used? They should have a record to print out for you. If you have insurance, they may also be able to help by looking at past records.

I have used Urgent Cares or Walk In clinics for refills when traveling. I took my old bottle and told them I had been traveling and ran out of my meds. They understood and gave me a prescription.

I felt more comfortable going to doctors who do not know me or want to push different drugs on me. I just told them I ran out when I was traveling and began to feel *funny* (dizzy, lightheaded, head zaps).

Even if you dont have your bottle or receipt, the doctors should understand and help you.

Paxil (paroxetine) is usually given very easily as Alto said. It is not a controlled substance or a narcotic.

We're all here for you.
