Hello, and welcome to SA.  We are a volunteer-run community of people who have been or are getting off of psychiatric drugs.  Of your list of symptoms,

1) which symptoms did you have while you were on the drug?

2) what symptoms did you have after you got off of the drug?

3) what symptoms are you having now?

4) Have you seen any improvement at all in your withdrawal since you got off the mirtazapine in early August 2021?

t may be that you got off the drug faster than your nervous system was able to adjust.

Thanks for your drug history.  Can you possible put this in your signature box, and change "2 months", etc. to a specific month and year?  Thank you.  Have you been on any other drugs besides mirtazapine?  If so, list those, too.

How to List Drug History in Signature

Here is some information about how these drugs actually work.   This explains why we get symptoms from going off of these medications.

We don't suggest many supplements, but 2 that many of us find helpful are magnesium and omega-3 fish oil. Here are the links for info about those. It is suggested to add one at a time, and start with a low dose to see how it affects you.

Hello, getoffflex! Thank you. This blog has helped me a lot to get through this. Thank you all!

1) During the use of Mirtazapine I had several symptoms, such as: constant fatigue, pain in the knees and lower back, frequent headaches, considerable worsening of vision, uncontrollable craving for sweets, gain 7 kg, panic, feeling of imminent death, constant fear, lack of confidence, apathy, extreme thirst, dry mouth, memory loss, very heavy and unregulated sleep, loss of pleasure and performance in physical activities, suicidal thoughts, loss of pleasure in sex and decreased sexual performance, sadness, pessimism, feeling that life had no more meaning, impatience, irritability, loss of concentration and lack of motivation. In addition to this drug, I used Aripiprazole, which caused me extreme distress and akathisia.

2) After full withdrawal, I only had withdrawal symptoms after approximately 1 month. After the withdrawal, I had: constant irritability, lack of pleasure and drop in performance in physical activities, sadness, apathy, lack of motivation, disconnection from reality, disconnection with one's own body, feeling of hopelessness, suicidal thoughts, fear, lack of confidence , lack of spontaneity, apathy of feelings (I didn't feel empathy, nor happiness, indifference to activities I liked to do), thoughts that invade the mind making me sadder, loss of libido for 7 months from the total withdrawal, irritated and the loss of notion of time, not knowing which days of the week, nor the sensation of passing the day (morning, noon and night - as if they were all the same), this side effect is complex and constant, as if losing the its position in the timeline of life itself. And the worst of all so far is the severe insomnia, which lasted approximately from October/21 to February/22 (during all these months I slept less than 3 hours a night). Insomnia is still present, but less frequently, happening about 3 to 4 times a week, with a sleep duration between 5h and 6h, which are not completely invigorating, waking up slightly tired and unmotivated, not having days of extreme confidence, energy and motivation. One observation is that I never had any problems with sleep, which was very good and invigorating.

3) I currently have: insomnia (but less intense than before), lack of days with confidence, high energy and motivation, libido that fluctuates, irritation on alternate days usually associated with sadness and hopelessness (thinking I will never get better), disconnection from reality and (I believe it is depersonalization), in addition to not having the same performance in physical activities as before (but it is improving), being in social environments and socializing with others does not generate as much well-being as before (I believe that due to the fall in empathy). These are the most frequent and serious. A note: coffee and alcohol apparently irritate the nervous system a lot and cause a relapse and worsening of symptoms to happen over a few days (with me, about 7 days). Not having the same feeling of pleasure when drinking any type of alcoholic beverage.

4) Yes. The process is very slow and being impatient in this situation is extremely complicated as it makes the healing process even more difficult. Several times I thought that I would never get better and that I would be condemned to this situation forever, but there is light at the end of the tunnel, your brain needs to change and it is slow to do that because it is a very complex organ. I believe that it can take many months to completely improve and get back to the way it was before, you can't predict it, just wait. But I feel that my sleep has been improving over time, my energy level has gradually improved, as well as my mood, pleasure in sex, libido and physical activities. But I know there's still a long way to go to be 100%. I've read some reports and my symptoms have been described by others very well, and this is helping to understand this process and go through it. Symptoms actually vary in waves, some shorter and some longer, but progressively improving.

My doctor recommended weaning me this way, but I knew I was wrong, so much so that I felt all that. He told me that I would have no sequelae from using the medication and would not feel anything after stopping, only that the "symptoms" of the disease would return. I felt cheated all this time, as he diagnosed me with Depression and OCD, but I never realized or felt it in my entire life. At the time I went to the consultation, I was going through a stressful moment in my life and my mother thought I was sick, she vehemently insisted that I go and take the medication, but I knew inside that I was not sick and that I didn't need those medications or that appointment. There were very difficult months that I spent with her thinking I was sick and the doctor reinforcing this fear she had.

I'll try to put more precise dates, as I didn't note when I changed doses. It was a process I went through where I isolated myself and my life was completely stopped because of these medication effects.
In addition to Mirtazapine I took Aripiprazole for 4 months, but I stopped earlier because it was causing me a lot of akathisia and anguish, I explained at the beginning in the answers.

Thank you very much for your attention!!

Hello, thank you for giving me detailed answers to each of my questions.  From the information you gave me, it is apparent that you were having significant adverse effects to both the mirtazapine and the aripiprazole, but yet your nervous system became dependent upon them.  When you came off the drugs, you had withdrawal symptoms because you tapered off the drugs faster than the brain was able to adjust.  This creates disequilibrium in our nervous systems, which affects every other system in our bodies.  I'm very glad to hear that you have been having improvements - this means you are healing.  You should continue to heal and improve, as long as you take good care of yourself, and avoid psychiatric drugs and other mind altering substances.  It sounds like you've done your research, and are well on your way to a good recovery.  Please be aware that your nervous system is likely to still be quite sensitive to many things, as you mentioned, alcohol, caffeine, and it could also be sensitive to certain antibiotics and other drugs, vaccines, intense exercise, stress, etc.  I know mine is.  The best thing to do now is to be very gentle on yourself, and try to take it easy when you can.  You may consider trying magnesium, as this tends to calm the nervous system.  See my link above about magnesium.  Please keep in touch, and let us know how you are doing.

Please do not private message me.  Only tag me for urgent questions about tapering and reinstating - thank you.

Hi getoffflex! As for the withdrawal process, the process was guided by my doctor who said I should reduce the dosage by half (from 30mg to 15mg) and after 10 days of the reduction, take the medication completely off. The doctor was very reluctant to withdraw the medication and said I would have symptoms of the disease again, but I never felt sick. I had a normal life before going through this stress process. I was struck by the fact that they didn't really listen to the patient and only prescribed medications for supposed symptoms of illnesses they identified. They always try to fit you into an illness. On top of that, the level of misinformation they have about medications and the adverse effects they can cause is negligible, they just don't know how the patient will react and they keep combining medications as if we were guinea pigs in experiments. I narrowly missed taking Clonazepam, which would be prescribed to lessen the akathisia caused by Aripiprazole (a cocktail of drugs that cause more problems than they purport to solve).

I did a lot of research looking for scientific articles about the adverse effects of these medications and there are several that question the real effectiveness of antidepressants and antipsychotics in the treatment of these diseases, in which they do not reach the minimum score in randomized trials to be considered effective in the treatment. In addition, many medical specialists and scholars question even the psychiatrists' bible (DSM) regarding the classifications of human behaviors that are considered disease.

I know I'm prolonging the subject, but I didn't find people who could talk frankly and be heard. The only person in my social environment where I talk a little about this subject is my sister who is studying for the medical course.

Finally, regarding the adverse effects of the use and withdrawal of these psychiatric medications, I forgot to mention that I still had stomach problems during use and after withdrawal, always feeling as if I had heartburn, poor digestion and constipation.

One more thing I noticed is that my reasoning ability has dropped dramatically, because I feel my thinking is not as agile as before. It takes me longer to process some information, especially when I'm studying. I don't know if this is a permanent effect, but my mind isn't as clear and fresh as it used to be. Getting in the way of my complete concentration and somehow influencing the flow process (something that must be closely interlinked with serotonin and dopamine).

As for the sensitivity of the nervous system, I still have it worse when I practice intense physical activity (gym) (as you had mentioned), as well as with antibiotics that I had to take for a while and that made me feel very bad, increasing the discomfort. Another very negative consequence that is currently present is constant tiredness and fatigue, even more because of the fact that I practice physical activity and don't have nights of invigorating sleep, my body doesn't regenerate so quickly from training. Which may be related to one of the transmitters that are affected by the medication (noradrenaline, GABA, cortisol and others).

That's it for now. Thank you very much for your support and I will try to include magnesium in my diet. If there's anything else you can help me with, I'd really appreciate it, as well as if you need any help. And sorry about my english isn't so good, i'm having a little help.

Uggh.  These doctors taper people way too fast, and then people end up with withdrawal because their nervous system is in shock.

Yes, I can very much relate - I think they did that to me too.  I'm glad that you didn't end up taking clonazepam.

I couldn't agree more!  I feel that these drugs are a scam, and are nothing more than a money maker for the big drug manufacturers.  I question the pathologizing of human emotional suffering.  Shep feels very similarly, read her thread, you may find it interesting:

You say your reasoning ability is lower.  That is very common with these drugs, and it should very gradually improve.  I had this issue, and it has improved.

Hi getoffflex! How are you? I want to report a wave I'm going through and I thought I wouldn't have something so critical anymore. I've had severe insomnia for 6 days again, I just can't sleep. I have severe headaches every day that don't go away. I feel like I have an anchor in my head that at any moment is going to explode. Also, I don't have a sense of future life perspective and lack of hope. I feel disconnected from myself and my body, as well as from the perception of reality. Whenever I'm in social situations, I don't feel connected to the people around me, as if I've lost the ability to empathize and enjoy the moment. It seems my social reactions are fake when I'm with others.

I'm realizing how difficult and painful this process is, but sometimes I get scared and afraid of it all. Will I really be okay? I often ask myself about this, if the damage caused by these drugs will not be cured. If I will have my normal life back. Sometimes it's frustrating and nerve-racking to think about it. I just wanted to be who I was before all this. I don't want to grieve here, but I'm in doubt about it all and with low hope.

I don't have many people who believe in what I am going through and offer to help. Throughout the process I had to believe in myself and what I was feeling and go against everyone who told me I was sick. It is hard when everyone is against you on something that only you yourself know how you are. It is very frustrating and makes you doubt yourself and takes away your confidence.

Yes, I want to validate that this is indeed a very difficult and painful thing to go through.  I know, because I've been there, and am still there to a certain extent.  I have good days, but sometimes I have bad days where I feel quite miserable, so I do know what you are going through.  You will be OK!  What makes the recovery from this so challenging, is that it is extremely slow, and also we have the crazy ups and downs (waves and windows).  You are now in a wave, and waves can be quite discouraging.  I know they were for me.

You are welcome to grieve here, especially since so few people out there understand or believe this.  It's because our suffering is mainly invisible.  We see someone in a wheelchair, and we have proof that they are disabled.  But with a temporary brain destabilization like we have, it's easy for people to want to deny and minimize it, because it makes them uncomfortable.  They don't know what to say or how to help us.  You can find lots of help and support here.  Try reading the success stories to give yourself hope and encouragement.  You can get through this!  Just try and take things one day at a time, one hour at a time, or even one moment at a time.  Try not to worry about the future.  Here is a link to the success stories:

What kind of imbalance? My mood for a long time was unstable. Vision problems didn't get in the way as much, my ophthalmologist diagnosed increased eye pressure and astigmatism. The biggest problems were and are unstable mood (extremely sad or irritable), severe insomnia for months, depersonalization and constant headaches.

I had an imbalance for a short period and it wasn't very intense. It happens when I have sleepless nights and wake up disoriented. But it gets better throughout the day. As for the eye pressure, I feel it has decreased and I can see much better than before, but I still haven't had proof of improvement with exams, just by perception over time. Have you already started the withdrawal? Are you experiencing anything other than vision problems?

I read part of your reports to understand a little bit of what is going on. I also believe that the problem is really in the brain only and not in the eyes or other organs. The brain processes all the information we receive through our senses and also controls our vital functions, if it is out of balance, so is everything else. Because with me I feel like I could be having a normal life, but my brain isn't ready yet to receive, process and function with all the information it receives. "The control center has been modified and is undergoing maintenance." What I felt about my vision, hearing and other functions is that if they are overstimulated (like loud music, partying, drinking, stress, too much light), I have an adverse reaction and feel like my nervous system is in shock. Causing me insomnia, stress, headaches and everything else. In addition to stomach problems. I believe you can avoid overstimulation of your senses, like screens in general, sound, agitation. This is a way I see of going through all this and not suffering so much.

Hi! I want to report the last few weeks that I have had symptoms. At the beginning of April, I started to sleep well again, it wasn't spectacular sleep like before the medication, but it was something regular and it lasted about 6h to 8h. These nights of sleep lasted for a week and a half, and it stopped when I went out with some friends to socialize. I didn't drink alcohol or drugs or anything like that, I just ate something natural and went home, that was enough to make my nervous system irritated, which gave me another wave of symptoms. I traveled to the countryside and more bad nights passed. The city was celebrating and silence was not so common. I had frequent headaches, apathy, tiredness. I went back to my house and now things are calmer, but I still have insomnia, the mood is down, a slight feeling of panic and fear, reality doesn't seem to be as bright and alive as before. Sometimes I think this process never comes to an end. I don't know how much longer I will need. I dream of the day when things will be like before, when I recognized my own body.

To complete the last report, my notion of time is not making any sense, every day is the same and apathetic. I lost track and understanding of reality, things don't make as much sense as before. I realized that something in me has changed, I don't know exactly what, but I don't care as much about things as I used to. I don't have the self-control, or focus, or perseverance to keep doing something I should be doing, like studying. My feelings are strange, most of the time non-existent, total indifference to practically everything. Neither joy nor sadness, neither high nor low, just a straight line. I feel cold, a whiteboard.

Hi! How are you? The last few days are very complicated. My head hurts so much, it feels like it's going to explode at any moment. My ears hurt too, I feel like my eardrums are going to bleed, every sound is very irritating. The light bothers my eyes a lot. And everything stresses me out. I don't feel very hungry. Insomnia is killing me, I just can't sleep. My life is in chaos and sometimes I think it will never end. What to do when I see no more exits and the pain is unbearable?

This is a very common feeling of people during withdrawal.  This link is really good to help you when you feel like it will never get better.  There are exits, the problem is that they are not instant.  In this case, the only way out is to walk through the pain, moment by moment, and give it time.  This will get better!  It's just so hard, because it takes a long time.

Hello everybody! I have some doubts after reading a thread. Here they are: I had a very sudden withdrawal of medication according to medical advice, could this indicate that my brain will never go back to what it was? Will I always have sequelae from the drugs? How much does the dose interfere with withdrawal? If I used high doses for a short time or medium doses for long periods, how does that affect withdrawal? Which situation is worse? Do I run the risk of the brain having an imbalance in the future for having already used these drugs one day? Thanks to anyone who can answer these questions!

Hi Warrior,

Grace again.  I just read some of your thread and I realize you did not need to hear that you tapered too fast.  Sounds like it wasn't really your choice and/or you were given really bad advice.   I think it is utterly incredible that you are functioning at all.  You are one strong person.  If you survived that kind of taper (barely a taper; close to a cold turkey in my opinion) you are definitely going to recover from it.  Try to be hopeful and focus on the future...I hope you have some supportive people in your life.  I have not shared my psych drug journey with more than a hand full of people.  They do not understand.  Most people (who don't know anyone who has done it) think a taper such as yours should be reasonable.  So I have kept all but a few close family members in the dark about what is and has happened to me.  I suggest you not waste your time trying to get people to understand...because most people just don't believe us.

  • 2002-2010 Klonopin 1-2 mg., ambien 10--20, mg, remeron 4 mg. and  trileptal 300 mg
  • 2011 Stopped ambien and crossed over to valium 17.5 mg. (updosing 2.5 mg. to cover ambien C/T )
  • tapered valium w/ long holds to 12.74 mg. from a high of approximately 20-30 mg/day
  • 2015-2023 tapered trileptal to 98 mg.  had to completely stop tapering due to multiple chronic, serious health issues
  • currently 2024 still on 98 mg. trileptal and 4 mg. remeron
  •   Currently on benzo hold as I have to cross-over from brand-name valium to generic diazepam.   The diazepam is way weaker and brought on severe acute w/d
  • Current dose of diazepam is 7.9 and valium is 6.6.  I had to up-dose the total valium/diazepam from 12.74 to 14.5 where I have stayed since June 2023.  I am crossing over to generic at a somewhat tolerable rate of .3mg/month after about 2 months of trial/error w/ updosing.  I am not currently tapering; will continue to cross over.

Hello, Grace! Thank you so much for reading my story and understanding it!! I really didn't have a choice at the time, I didn't know about SA yet and I only had the medical indication. I look forward to that future, where I will feel good about myself again. I have 2 people I can trust, but they still don't fully understand this process, as you said.
Once again, I just have to thank you for the attention you are giving me!

Yep.  Maybe it helps you understand my own story because it started 41 years ago....long before I could inform myself on the internet or get support from people on forums such as SA.  So I spent at least 2 decades, clueless, stupidly trusting my doctors.  I am now irreparably harmed and actually most of my doctors are pushing more psych drugs on me, which I, of course, I have declined.  My psychiatrist that I have had for 20 years lets me set the pace and would probably give me higher doses of everything but he knows better than to offer!  I have spent hundreds of hours  (much of the last 2 decades) trying to find a way out of this mess, but the only way out is through it.  It may be hard to understand that it is too late for me, but it is sort of like choosing quality of life over quantity.  I can still function at a very very minimal level; I was able to be present for my 3 kids' weddings and the births of 6 grandchildren

.  Had I been bed-ridden, I would have missed all that.  I now live life as a spectator with a respite of a few hours now and then when I am able to handle visitors.  It is what it is.  Psych drugs ruined my life (and my husband's).  I just continue to live one day at a time...try to pay heed to the good days because I think more and more of them will be coming for you!

Take care, Warrior!

Hello Grace! I think I can get a sense of what you must have gone through when you were looking for a solution and help, but couldn't find anything. Of course, it doesn't compare to what is currently available. I am baffled by the inability of these doctors to believe what their patients themselves report when they take these drugs. They can only see that everything is because of the "disease". I cannot understand how they can believe in an allergic reaction caused by any other medication, but they are unable to understand what an adverse CNS reaction to AD would be. What is missing for these drugs to have stricter inspection and research or be banned? People have died, been hospitalized, sick, suffering without being able to do much other than endure.
I think your outlook on life is very adequate when we don't have so many options anymore. In fact, enjoy the days that are good and seek more quality of life. Good to know that you can still have moments of peace and have witnessed such important events.

Thank you so much, Grace! May you also have more active days and with more quality of life!

Hi! I would like to report more symptoms: I always feel tired, with slow movements, without vitality, apathetic and low energy. My body sometimes heats up, as if parts of the skin heat up, feathers, arms, ears, face. The sounds still bother me a lot, as if the slightest noise was at maximum volume. My mind is still a little fuzzy and I feel a tingle in my brain, as if something is pressing on it. My emotions still fluctuate a lot during the day, ranging from a little hopeful, to mild pessimism and sadness. Zero trust. The reality still looks frightening and I don't fully realize it. I don't recognize my body, its day-to-day reactions are strange. I feel things I've never felt before.

Also, I feel my emotions numb, as if I can't fully access them, whether I'm always on the surface or not feeling them. Being with people is not so pleasurable, certain places and activities do not have the same emotional association. I still have depersonalization. Activities that require quick thinking are difficult to perform.

Hi, @Ariel

Thank you for answer me. This seems exactly like I fell when I wake up. It's a panic that appears after a nap or sometimes during the night, even awaken for a while. I feel panic and fear if the weather isn't good, with rain, gale. I don't have sleeping well during this time, almost 9 months. I'm not sure if my body will complete recovery from this WD. Sometimes I feel myself insecure, scared with that, because I losted the control that I had with my body and my life. My health is very weakened because these medications and the consequences of their WD.

Hi! I don't know how to explain these symptom, but I would like to know if it's normal lost the feeling of "mind opening" when we back to home after a busy day, or when we start to clean the bedroom and finally finish that, or even when we're watching something or talking with someone and we have the perception of the place that we are? A type of conscience of what is happening in the moment and you have that and the feeling of it? It's seems confuse and difficult to explain, but I've losted that feeling, that kind of perception. If someone understood that, answer me, please.
