Our conference line-up so far:

James Gordon, M.D.

Dr. Gordon is the Founder and Director of the Center for Mind-Body Medicine in Washington, DC. His most recent book is Unstuck: Your Guide to the Seven-Stage Journey Out of Depression of which a reviewer said: “Unstuck is the most exciting book on transforming depression I’ve ever read. Before you reach for a drug, read this book to feel better. This book is EXACTLY what this over-medicated country needs right now.” One of his other books is Manifesto for a New Medicine: Your Guide to Healing Partnerships and the Wise Use of Alternative Therapies.

Irving Kirsch, Ph.D.

Dr. Kirsch is the author of The Emperor’s New Drugs: Exploding the Antidepressant Myth, a research-based expose of the fact that antidepressant drugs are no more effective than placebo. In a recent interview on 60 Minutes, Leslie Stahl said to him: “But many people say that they work. What do you say to that?” Kirsch replied: “Oh yes they work but they work almost totally because of the placebo effect.” He is Professor of Psychology at the University of Hull in the United Kingdom.

Grace Jackson, M.D.

Dr. Jackson is a psychiatrist who knows psychotropic drugs deeply and broadly. After listening to Grace, you’ll be comfortable answering any question from anyone about how psychotropic drugs work and why they are dangerous. Dr. Jackson is the author of Rethinking Psychiatric Drugs: A Guide for Informed Consent and Drug-induced Dementia: A Perfect Crime.

Gary Greenberg, Ph.D.

Dr. Greenberg is the author of Manufacturing Depression which one reviewer called “a blistering, rambling and entertaining attack on the biomedical disease model of depression.” Greenberg is a practicing psychotherapist who writes about the intersection of science, politics and ethics.

Salman Akhtar, M.D.

Dr. Akhtar is the author of Quest for Answers, Objects of Desire, The Damaged Core and other books. He is described as “one of the most dynamic speakers I have heard who is excited about what ISEPP is doing and about the 2012 conference.”

Peter Lehmann

Mr. Lehmann, a citizen of Germany, is the founder of the European Network of (ex) Users and Survivors of Psychiatry, a self-help group which informs people about psychiatric drugs and helps them withdraw from such drugs and the co-author of Alternatives Beyond Psychiatry. He is a worldwide leader in the movement of psychiatric survivors to gain a voice in mental health policy. In 2010 he was awarded an honorary doctorate “in acknowledgement of exceptional scientific and humanitarian contribution to the rights of people with psychiatric experience” by the School of Psychology at Aristotle University in Thessaloniki, Greece. In 2011, he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.

Deborah Leupnitz, Ph.D.

Dr. Leupnitz is a psychologist who founded Insight for All, a program in which psychoanalysts see homeless individuals for free. She will talk about Insight for all and the healing power of relationship and psychoanalysis. She is the author of The Family Interpreted.

The conference will include a strategy session on Saturday afternoon designed to help participants prepare to take action in 2013. The strategy session will be directed by the Foundation for Excellence in Mental Health Care, out co-sponsors for the conference.

We're also collaborating with two sister organizations that are putting on pre-conference and post-conference events. MindFreedom International will be sponsoring a one-day workshop on Thursday, November 1 which is designed to energize and inspire consumers and survivors in their work to create a "non-violent revolution in mental health". Among the speakers will be Susan Musante, Executive Director of Soteria Alaska and Peter Lehmann, author of Alternatives Beyond Psychiatry.

The Philadelphia Society of Psychoanalytical Psychologists is sponsoring a workshop on Sunday afternoon, November 4 which will feature Bert Karon, author of The Psychotherapy of Schizophrenia.

All of these events will take place at the Philadelphia Airport Marriott Hotel in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
