NIS - Neurological Integration Systems

Recommended Posts

I was wondering if anyone has tried NIS for the treatment of Post Acute Withdrawals? There is a Chiropractor that practices this type of treatment and I was just curious if anyone has tried it.

Thanks!  Look forward to your feedback.

I’m not sure yet if it helped or not. For about 5-6 hours after the treatment my anxiety was really bad. The following morning I was a little tired and have had more anxiety the past couple of days. I am going to continue to monitor how I’m doing. My thoughts currently are it might be too much for my system right now, as I tend to not be able to tolerate a lot of things…..supplements, etc.

I’m feeling really discouraged right now, like I need someone to help me but no one seems to be able to help. Did you feel the same? Any words of advice? Encouragement?

Thanks!

Hi Jilla,

Would you mind describing the actual treatment? That's what I mean by your experience. What happens during the treatment? What does the practitioner do, and how does it feel while it's happening? If you don't mind sharing.

I hear you. I think many of us share this feeling.

WD is a very hard thing to go through. There are neuro-emotions of loneliness and vulnerability, combined with the fact that there is no known treatment or cure for WD.

As you say, we feel like we need help while feeling like there's no one to help us. You are certainly not alone in feeling this way.

It is inherent to the sorrow and grief we go through while in this process.

I don't know whether I have any advice or encouragement to offer. What I can say is that you are not alone in feeling this way. And that this is temporary. WD and all of these symptoms will pass and healing does happen. It gets better.

I try to find comfort in SA and the community here. It helps a lot to experience the kindness and support here.

I did go through a phase in the early years of PAWS (before i knew it was PAWS) where I was very actively searching for help and interventions, including supplements and practitioners, etc.

I couldn't find anything that made a significant dent in things but I sure did spend a lot of money! In addition to being expensive it was quite stressful to be constantly looking for help and feeling disappointed when an attempt failed. I finally decided to stop seeking and it was huge relief, I felt a weight lift off my shoulders and just felt much less stressed. I accepted PAWS and it brought me a lot of peace, comparatively.

I'd say the most powerful tool we can wield to help ourselves through WD is acceptance. Acceptance is profoundly transformative. I believe that it can decisively relieve stress (certainly decrease meta-distress) and thus facilitate healing in a meaningful way. Acceptance is practice. It's not something you do once and then stop. It's a practice of returning to acceptance again and again. The more we practice the better we get at it. It's worth the effort. It makes a huge difference.

A few other things that can make a difference (speaking from personal experience):

- functional nutrition

- cold water plunges/showers/bathing

- rest

- being/walking/spending time in/with nature, incl. trees and animals

All that being said I did have some good experiences with a modality called Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy.

I've posted about this various places on SA, for example here

Please note that this is no way a cure for WD. A treatment session does not make a lasting impact on WD in the long run.

I did find the sessions to be helpful in mitigating the immediate discomfort of certain WD symptoms, for example headache, head pressure, jaw pain, facial tension, stiff neck, muscle pain/tension.

It also helped my body find rest and possibly temporarily facilitated better sleep.

Again, the effects were short-lived. If someone can afford weekly treatments with a gifted practitioner, I imagine it could be quite helpful to do Biodynamic Craniosacral Treatments for long periods of time during WD. It's a very gentle, supportive practice.

Thanks Ariel!
With NIS treatment he first tests a lot of different systems in the body, nervous, brain, spine, etc. He uses muscle testing to do this. Then he just touches a bunch of different points in the body, and retests certain areas. To tell you the truth I’m not sure how this is all supposed to work. I think perhaps similar to the acupuncture meridians?!? The premise I believe is to get the brain and nervous systems into alignment.

I will try to ask more questions when I go back!

What you describe is consistent with what I've read online about NIS.

Did you find the treatment pleasant or relaxing while it lasted?

Yes, it was relaxing during treatment, but afterwards the anxiety kicked in.

Hi, @Jilla,

wanted to ask if by any chance You've had continued the NIS therapy, and did it help in the long run :)

Wishing You a lifelong window!

V.

Duloxetine 2016/17 - 30/60mg/30mg, c/t, light WD.

Sertraline June 2019 50mg ADR

Clorazepate June 2019 20-15-10mg for 3 weeks then sparsely until 2022, 2 times per month max and very low dose (5mg)

Clorazepate Jan2022 10mg 5 days 2,5mg 2 days then off

Venlafaxine June 2019 75mg ADR, 17,5mg, titrated to 37,5mg

Venlafaxine Jan 2022 Covid, hard ADR on 37,5mg, reduced to 20mg ADR, tried ct, crash,

Venlafaxine 22Jan22 reinstated 9,4mg, too low/ 01Feb22- 12mg/ 12Feb- 11,25mg/ 16Feb- 11mg/ 20Feb- 10,8mg/ 24Feb22-10,575mg/ 16Mar22- 10,46mg/ 26Mar22- 10,35mg/ 26Apr22- 10mg/ 01Oct- 9,9mg/ 13Nov- 9,7mg

01Jan24-7,5mg

MAR24

Due to another sudden intolerance had to fast taper venlafaxine to 1,14mg

Seems like all of this time I was in benzo withdrawal, because when I took it now in desperation to help it made me feel worse, tried reinstatement first 1mg, then 0,05mg both made me feel worse.

I did not continue this therapy. Had really bad withdrawals after the first 2 sessions and decided it was doing more harm that good. Perhaps if I had waited until I was less sensitive and stronger, I might have had a more positive outcome.

Thanks for asking!
