I did not sleep for 7 nights straight. Ny primary care doc prescribed low dose Xanax. It relaxes me but I did not sleep. 10 nights no sleep. Not more than maybe 3 hours in total. My psych tried low dose Buspar 2.5 in am and 5 mg at night. I did this for one day (yesterday) and felt amazing. Fell asleep but woke up in a jolt with high heart rate (what has happened ever since I took gelatin) next day I took 2.5 in am and a Benadryl in the afternoon to try and sleep. The Benadryl made me very agitated and feel completely abnormal.

i am noticing jerky movements which I have since the gelatin still and now don’t know if Buspar will make this worse as it acts on D2 receptor. The first day I took it I felt amazing but the morning after I was not feeling good and started to notice more restless legs. If I wanted to discontinue Buspar at this point, how would I titrate off?

All of my doctors say this is anxiety and to take meds asap. Im not sure. I think the gelatin really messed up my system, or that I have fatal insomnia- no joke.

I went to the ER they gave me a 1mg dose of Ativan which actually did let me get some sleep

Hello Elaine,

Food can make things worst but it will not trap you or "capture you" in the sense that your brain gets permanently rewired some way. You need to settle for a med regimen, get some sleep and work on stabilizing. We are here for you!

December 2021 - Metoclopramide started. Akathisia symptoms start; Metoclopramide gets changed to PRN.

March 2022 - Akathisia diagnosed; Metoclopramide stopped; Propranolol 10mg x twice a day. Biperiden PRN (0.5mg to 1mg).

April 2022 - Tandospirone 30mg (10mg 3x day), Quetiapine 25mg (only taken once, immediate adr). Mirtazapine 7.5mg. . Discontinued Propranolol.

May 2022 - Mirtazapine upped to 15mg. Tandospirone cut to 2x 10mg. Low dose Depakote for the month; 100 to 200 to 100 to 0. Mirtazapine cut back to 11.75mg (3/4 of a 15mg pill).
June 2022 - Mirtazapine updose to 15mg. Tandospirone, Biperiden discontinued. Klonopin started PRN (0.5mg).
September 2022 - Akathisia slowly starts improving, WD/ADR normal sets in in mid September. Hold for 4 months.
March 2023 - Off mirtazapine; no Klonopin for 5 months either! Started quercetin (250mg x 2) to soften the histamine rebound.

May 2023 - Stopped quercetin and changed from magnesium carbonate to oxide - reacted badly. Reverted back to carbonate.
June 2023 - Added fish oil.
Current regimen: CALM Magnesium (Carbonate into Citrate) 175mg x2; Vitamin E 268mg x2; Fish oil (100mg Omega3; EPA 30mg; DHA 37mg)x2

By 3 hours I mean combined across 10 days not three a night. i wish.

the thing is that the gelatin is really a supplement. And it wound up throwing off my nervous system very seriously.

i don’t know what happened exactly but I do hope to get through to the other side soon.

  • 4 weeks later...

I’m doing my best to avoid hard hitting meds like benzodiazepines and ssris again.

The no sleep really clouded my judgment.

moderators don’t have to reply to this if it’s a nuisance as I tried some sort of medication again. However, I will be looking to come off that soon enough.

just checking in though- the extreme insomnia could be a progression of my protracted withdrawl or made worse by desensitizing my system even more with the gelatin diet mishap?

id like to avoid further setting myself back.

i would like to add that I originally thought the gelatin diet wouldn’t be dangerous as it’s literally gelatin sold at Whole Foods- but I severely underestimated how sensitive my system is. So if it seems like I blatantly didn’t follow advice, it really didn’t go down that way in the moment, but looking back clearly I made a very poor decision.

i do not want to work with any prescribers or take any more Meds after my experiences, however I went to the ER 10 times for extreme tachycardia and was directed to the psych ward 8/10 of those times for “anxiety.” I know it wasn’t my own anxiety, that it was a bad reaction, but doctors do not believe gelatin could have caused such issues therefore I have a “delusion” driven by anxiety and should seek psychiatric help asap. Same thing for the insomnia- as if my anxiety of 30 years suddenly now disallows my body from any kind of sleep. Not likely.

i am still struggling with severe insomnia, which had not been an issue to this extreme ever before not on or off medication at any point in withdrawl.

i further believe that the meds I am on now are contributing to severe depressed mood and perpetuating some of the insomnia. Again, my fault I know, but when faced with 2 weeks of no sleep I sort of felt I had to try something, anything.

When I am ready to taper from current meds I hope I can come back here for advice. Again, it was not a flippant decision to try some sort of medication blindly, I truly was grasping for any sort of lifeline with that amount of insomnia.

thanks to all who have helped thus far and to all who have or are going through this messed up withdrawl journey. I just want to survive.

It's unlikely the gelatin experiment for 4 days is responsible for your symptoms. But if you ate nothing but fruit and gelatin, you might have gotten low blood sugar.

Do you have a tendency toward not eating and maybe getting dehydrated as well?

I can’t say it’s really been a tendency, I’m usually a very good eater and eat varied food groups.

I don’t know what to think at this point.

Sleep and periods of restlessness/agitation are most concerning right now. It’s like my body forgot how to sleep normally. Naps elude me. To think previously my problem was TOO much sleep and now suddenly after that diet it’s the exact opposite.

Last night I was able to sleep 7 hours in total, albeit fractured, without any sleep aids.

I find hope and reassurance in the reality that for many here, severe sleep disturbances, restlessness, and feeling totally physically and emotionally gutted do remit in time. To think I had it bad before with pssd; I am trying hard just to get back there again and feel safe and healthy even if unemotional.

As for low blood sugar, I have had blood work done a few times during all this and it comes up as normal. Blood level norepinephrine and glutamic acid were flagged as high, but minimally so. No reason to suspect an adrenal tumor which can cause many of these unoleasant symptoms. Ferritin levels were flagged as low and I have been directed to take an iron supplement with vitamin c.

It is scary to feel completely not in control of your own body and to realize how precarious this meat suit is, how our wants and needs can be so removed from our physicality, and yet so imprisoned by its limitations.

It’s hit or miss-some days and nights are okay while others are awful.

i have been on Buspar for the past month. First at 2.5 2x a day, then 5 and 2.5, then 5 and 5, and now 7.5 2x a day. I am not sure if this is contributing to more restlessness, restless legs, and Akathisia like issues. Does this 10% taper apply to Busirone as well?

so this would look like 6.75 2x a day for first reduction?

I will find out tomorrow and reply back.

I feel deep regret and sorrow for this stupid experiment that has landed me in a much worse situation.

On 11/15 I was able to sleep a handful of hours in total mostly between 7am and 1pm. I had a great day. Last night I slept perhaps 2-3 hours in total and am feeling deep depression, anger at myself, and fear that this just continues it gets worse. I am not functioning. Those nights were with Belsomra as a sleep aid.

It seems as though I landed myself in some severe withdrawl hell with the insomnia. Does withdrawl insomnia often involve an inability to sleep at all, including not able to nap during the day, and severely broken sleep at night? In my case, I don’t even know if this will get better in time because I don’t know if it’s related to withdrawl or if I did something else terrible unrelated to withdrawl that will be permanent.

I stayed away from all other meds during that time after I realized I had pssd. I had gotten so depressed about it I figured what the heck, it’s beef gelatin, maybe it will help slightly or else maybe it’ll make my hair and nails stronger. I think the underlying mechanism of amino acid transport did impact chemistry and after briefly recovering for a week, the insomnia came crashing down bitterly along with bouts of restlessness and severe depression/anxiety. Either I badly kindled my system or threw of hormones/neurotransmitters in unexpected ways.

I asked 5 different neurologists about it. I thought maybe all the glutamic acid in collagen/beef gelatin could have created a glutamate storm or excitotoxicity. They looked at me like I was crazy.  I wonder if lowering and then raising those chemicals in my system triggered silencing of receptors like how men with post Finasteride syndrome have awful permanent insomnia. I have no clue what is going on. I just feel so badly. From bad to worse.

If I were you, I'd stop ruminating about your diet experiment.

Have you researched all the drugs you take? Are you aware of potential adverse effects of buspirone?

Thanks Alto. Yes, I am painfully aware of all the things that can go wrong from mild to severe for both Buspar and Belsomra.

Thank you for sharing that- I keep saying the Buspar is not helping me feel drowsy, just the opposite.

i asked the apn of the IOP program my family signed me up for because they think the insomnia is behavioral (it’s not) about these issues and how to come off Buspar and Belsomra. She said she wouldn’t come off them now but instead add low dose Remron for sleep. Uffa.

i don’t know if the insomnia is withdrawl related or not. So I don’t know how to proceed. I don’t believe Buspar or Belsomra has helped much and I doubt another med will provide any miracles. So there is no tapering plan in place.

im looking into supplements that might help sleep but I’m hesitant to do anything on my own at this point considering.

i wonder if the sleep I am getting is simply on my own and not even from the Belsomra whatsoever.

I am not sure if I start tapering the Buspar if that will throw off my CNS even more. I don’t want to just stop taking it at this point.

At first I was struggling with intense anxiety, inner terror, and lack of sleep. I told my doctors this and Buspar is what was prescribed. When I communicated that I was concerned about it potentially worsening sleep and restless legs or Akathisia, I was told “no it’s not the Buspar.”

At this point I don’t think it’s a good idea to just drop the dose on my own and see what happens. I do not trust myself at this stage to make any decisions about meds or supplements because clearly I have messed up badly. I would love to taper Buspar and feel better, but the truth is I was experiencing these issues before starting Buspar. So I don’t know if it’s helping, hurting, or just not doing anything in particular at all. The one thing I notice for certain is about 20-40 mins after taking a dose I feel considerable popping in my legs (restless legs). This is consistent.

I don’t know if making a change at this point would be even more taxing than just holding where I am so I don’t keep jumping on and off things out of desperation.

I didn’t sleep last night. I was very jittery, shaking my legs in bed all night. I also notice lately that my tongue seems twitch or spasm a little bit sometimes, it’s not really consistent but has happened now a handful of times and for a few nights here and there this week it has happened multiple times during night.

im worried this may be TD.

i went on the Buspar because after the gelatin diet I was having extreme anxiety/terror, insomnia, and even strange twitching and hypnic jerks. So I don’t know what is from what at this point.

i am very concerned, uncomfortable, sleep deprived, and lost.

My head is all tensed up either from twitching, Akathisia, or lack of sleep, ir perhaps all of these. Nothing feels comfortable or relaxing. I feel like my body is torturing me at this point.

I am going to tell the prescriber I would like to come off of Buspar as I don’t believe it has helped much and if anything, is compounding insomnia and twitching/restlessness.

I have been on this medication since the second week of October. It is now a month and a couple weeks since I started. I would like to taper this safely and am asking how to go about that- I know the prescriber will likely say okay, jump down from 7.5 2x to 5 2x to 2.5 2x to 1.25 2x as this was pretty much how I came onto it.

i don’t know if getting off Buspar will solve my insomnia and restless twitching or if the withdraw would make it worse. No one can know that for sure, but based on what I have shared here and what you have experienced and seen, would tapering off Buspar be reasonable and sensible at this point? Or would it be putting me in any greater risk? how would SA advise coming off of this medication using the buspirone pill tablets?

this whole process is so dehumanizing and scary. None of us want to be experiencing this. Thank you for your help.

I have also been taking Motrin prn for headaches from lack of sleep and also because sometimes the Akathisia feeling starts with a tightness in my head. Sometimes the Motrin seems to help, but I don’t want to have to use it everyday.

You started taking buspirone in October? Was it before you reported these symptoms?

It appears you have been to the emergency room, neurologists, and are taking an additional sleep drug for adverse effects of buspirone. Yet you ask your doctor's permission to go off.

For what purpose are you seeking peer support?

No, I had strange symptoms after the gelatin diet and THEN I went on buspirone.

The sleep medication was to address issues that arose after the gelatin diet that continues.

yes things may be made slightly worse by buspirone, or better, I can’t tell.

1)I am seeking your guidance in tapering Buspar. I have asked how SA would go about tapering the pill form Buspar in light of the time I’ve been on it. I have tried asking that a few times here.

2)I am not knowledgeable about protracted withdrawl or sensitized nervous systems. Neither are my doctors. So I am asking if the issues described before Buspar and the sleep meds, severe insomnia, Akathisia like symptoms, muscle twitching/jerking which developed post gelatin diet could be an extension of my protracted withdrawl, or something you see as unrelated.

please note that severe insomnia was not caused by Buspar nor am I taking a sleep med to counter it’s effects. I went over a week straight without any perceptible sleep before starting on medication again.

I am not asking permission to go off Buspar, I am asking how to do so safely. I believe that is something reasonable to ask here? Until I know how to do that safely I don’t feel comfortable dropping it stopping it.

It seems as though I first wound up in this situation with pssd and emotional anesthesia that led me to my current predicament because I did not taper safely and stopped medication abruptly. So i am confused. Are you suggesting it is fine to stop taking the Buspar without any taper?

I'm not a doctor, but it appears to me that you have adverse effects of buspirone that may be causing many of your symptoms in addition to any withdrawal symptoms. Up to you whether you want to put up with the adverse effects or taper off buspirone.

Personally, I would not continue to take a drug causing adverse effects unless it's also doing something that's beneficial.

See Tips for tapering off buspirone (Buspar)

last week I noticed worsening sleep and some subtle tongue spasms that freaked me out. Also a slow return of some jerks and twitches. Would jitter my legs when i woke up from sleep.

11/23 I developed what appears to be legit Akathisia overnight. I had to keep getting up to stand up or walk. Didn’t sleep a minute. When I laid down to get comfortable would feel a jolt of panick. Felt very panicky.

11/24 continues to feel panicky all day and have to get up to walk around. Can’t sit still for long. Feel uncomfortable. No appetite.  Speak with my prescriber who says lower Buspar from 7.5 2x a day to 5 2x a day which was my previous dose. I went up to 7.5 2x a day in November 1. Lowered Belsomra 20mg to around 15mg. Slept better, probably 7 hours in total, fractured. Woke up panicky after falling asleep but went back to sleep.  no signs of Akathisia at night.

11/25 took 5 and 5 of Buspar. Felt calm and sleepy in the morning. Even took a sort nap in the afternoon where I was in and out of light sleep for about 2 hours, probably sleeping for a half hour during that time. Felt times of calm and enjoyed the day mostly. Started to feel a bit off in the evening. Noticed my back felt a bit weird, like tingly? Burning? Took Buspar at 8:30pm. Took belsomra 15mg at 11:30. Didn’t feel sleepy. Couldn’t sleep for anything. Felt like my brain was seized up very alert. Frequent twitches/spasms. Subtle spasm in tongue, legs, very uncomfortable. Not panicky at all, but feel miserable, tired, and cannot relax. No need to get up and walk though.

it feels like my head is going to explode. I am not able to feel relaxed despite not feeling anxious- it feels like my body and brain are tensed up. I am so desperate for sleep.

I have been on Buspar since October 13. I have been on Belsomra since October 24. I tried a few other sleep meds during this time including a few nights each of trazadone, lunesta, gabapentin, melatonin.- last was gabapentin 300mg along with 10mg of Belsomra for 3 evenings first week of November. (First night slept great, then didn’t seem to help as much and felt more depressed so I stopped) I was on xanax for 11 days in October. All this due to severe insomnia, mental anguish, mycolnoc jerks and twitches that developed after a tryptophan depletion trial gone wrong using beef gelatin to try to address protracted withdrawl/pssd/emotional anesthesia in mid September.

Help re: coming off Buspar and Belsomra. I was worried I was developing dyskinesia (tongue spasm) and attributed to Buspar. Also noticed increased restless legs. However, there were some weeks things felt like they were improving- up until last week and things have worsened since then.  Belsomra seemed to be hit or miss, but at least I was getting some kind of sleep. It seems like it stopped working last week- and I noticed over time it seemed to make me feel more depressed. Hence why I wanted to come off of these.

i am desperate for sleep. Not sure how eating beef gelatin for 3-4 days in mid September could have caused such insane damage. It feels like I am going to die and frankly, if this continues, I’d welcome it. My body and brain are in such torment right now.

i wonder if the beef gelatin totally threw off brain chemistry even worse than introducing a new med- maybe it caused dopaine supersensitivity by depleting dopamine or idk. I have been in so much pain ever since.

please help- do I reinstate higher dose of Buspar, did last night of no sleep and back tingling and worse twitching indicate need to updose? I don’t have adequate tools to do exactly 10% but I could do 7.5 in am and 5 at night which would be a 16% decrease- from 15mg total- more reasonable than a 30% decrease. Additionally, should I go back to 20mg of Belsomra while doing so?

i am worried I will end up in hospital due to lack of sleep and due to strange twitching.just want to feel better and sleep some. Please please help. @Shep @getofflex @brassmonkey

I know the mantra is that people heal, but I don’t think anyone on here was stupid enough to try a tryptophan depletion diet/supplement that did who knows what to their system.

The reason I would like to come off Buspar is due to what alpeares to be Akathisia the other night/day in a severity I have not experienced before and the development of subtle tongue spasms. Please not that I did feel restless and had many twitches and jerks prior to Buspar, about two weeks after the gelatin diet. (Things got better  and I felt totally fine for a week after and then insomnia and sometimes terror set in. Didn’t sleep for 7 days straight hence trying out medication)

i cannot understand why the last week things have gotten worse suddenly after seemingly finding some kind of rhrhum with Buspar and Belsomra for some weeks now that was at least survivable.

Alto notes that it appears I was having an adverse reaction to Buspar again hence wy I want to come off. But I don’t know if these worsening issues are a result of Buspar, the gelatin diet, sleep deprivation, belsomra, or all of the above. This is too complicated for me and doctors keep saying it’s severe anxiety than needs More meds.

Please help in any way you can. I am not looking for someone to fix the problem, but please shed insight and guidance based on your experience and knowledge. I am infinitely regretful and scared right now. Your help with what to do about Buspar and Belsomra are most relevant right now, if you think they are culpable or not, how to go off them, and if you think my worse symptoms last night after cutting the dose for a day warrants going back up.

Hello Elaine. I  have read through the last couple of months of your posts, and your drug signature.  The way I see it, you are dealing with significant nervous system activation from having gone on and off many psychiatric drugs.  I count roughly 24 drug changes over the past several years.  Hopefully, you are by now aware of how these drugs work.  They make changes to the brain, and after about 4 weeks, your brain becomes physically dependent upon them.  Please read

How Psychiatric Drugs Remodel Your Brain

Also, the more we add and subtract these drugs, the more likely it is that our brain will become hypersensitive, and then we are at risk for kindling.  I personally don't think your gelatin diet is a major factor.  You should also be aware by now of the windows and waves pattern of withdrawal and recovery, so you may have been coincidentally hit by a wave at that time.

Windows and Waves Pattern of Stabilization

Hypersensitivity and Kindling

For one thing, it looks to me like you are still relying a lot of doctors and drugs to try to fix you.  I see this quite a lot here.  Unfortunately, our health care system is heavily pro drug, and the vast majority of doctors are clueless about how these drugs really work, and what they do to our brains.  That is why this site is so big and so active.

Please be aware that in most cases, our advice will directly conflict with that of the doctors.  You need to make a decision whether you want to go with your doctors' advice, and go with their drug regimen, or whether you want to get off these drugs, and taper safely, and follow the tapering methods we suggest here on this site.   Just do be aware that if you go the route of the doctors, because your system is probably hypersensitive by now with all the drugs you have been on and off of, that there is a likelihood that your problems will get worse, not better. Unfortunately, what I see a lot here, is people in desperation going on and off one drug after another in at attempt to fix their symptoms, and then this further destabilizes the nervous system, and makes then worse and worse.

It sounds to me like you are dealing with a combination of withdrawal from the many drugs you have been on and off of in the past several years, in addition to an adverse reaction to Buspar.

Personally, if it were me, I would do a slow 10% taper off of Buspar, as it appears to be giving you an adverse reaction, and activating you, rather than helping your sleep.  I wouldn't do anything to change the Belsomra yet.  I would avoid going on any other drugs or supplements, and I would find non drug ways of dealing with the insomnia.

I realize you are in a very difficult place right now with your insomnia.  I understand how scary and painful this is, because insomnia was my main symptom as well.  But I think if you can try to get yourself off the drug merry go round, that eventually, your brain and body will stabilize, and your system will be able to sleep by itself again.  I've been off psych meds for over 4 months, and most nights I'm able to get 6 to 7 hours of sleep.  I had to endure a lot of sleepless nights, but eventually, my system healed.  Please read these links to see how important it is to keep things simple, stable, and slow.

Thank you so much @getofflex. I am definitely noticing Akathisia which now keeps me up entirely at night. It’s a different kind of feeling than before and it’s awful. Considering that adverse reaction, I should still slowly taper?

I would like the aka to go away and I figure a slower taper would prolong it- or is it the opposite?

I really can’t say for sure. You’re in a tough spot because you’re dependent on a drug but you’re also having an adverse reaction to it. Not only that we don’t know how much of your akathisia is from previous drugs that you’ve been on and off. You have to choose the lesser of two evils. I don’t know if the adverse reaction or withdrawal would be worse for you you might have to just experiment with your taper and see how it works out. You might try doing a 10% taper every 2 to 3  weeks and see how that goes.

I didn’t have Akathisia until this past week, I realize that now. This is very different and unique and scary. In the past I may have been anxious, twitchy, even agitated, but I thing like this.

It’s unbearable and I feel like I can’t tap into my own humanity- I am a pacing frayed ball of nerves and I am unable to sleep entirely now.

Last change I made was upping Buspar to 7.5 2x a day November 1 and then introducing/eliminating gabapentin for three evenings Nov 3,4,5. Didn’t notice a subtle change except for better sleep the first night. I did take an iron supplement around this time as well for a few days due to low ferritin. I experienced more jitteriness last week culminating in a full on pacing evening three nights in a row now and this morning awoke to feel on fire in my head like I couldn’t tap into my own identity and that i was going to explode. All evening I would get comfortable, start to doze off, twitch, and then some kind of panic was awoken and I’d have to get out of bed just to try and distract.

@getofflex thank u very much for your time in getting back to me. I appreciate you.

Are there recoveries from people with Akathisia as an adverse reaction to Buspar or other drugs? Or is it a permanent thing now?

to think I went on Buspar to handle anxiety about developing Akathisia from the gelatin diet I did is just effing unreal.

Hello, I have almost the same symptoms as you pssd and brain fog.  I have a question, have your symptoms reduced in intensity or even disappeared for some?  Do the moderators and those in the know here know if quitting the drug all at once rather than bit by bit can make you not get cured?

Hello everyone, I was on seroplex 10mg in October 2019 for over a year and then on brintellix from March to September for maybe 8 months. I made several attempts to stop abruptly then I resumed the treatment of brintellix recently for a few weeks because it was too difficult to stop.

Symptom when stopped: premature ejaculation, ejaculation with less orgasm. Severe insomnia, transient headaches, sensitivity to noise and light.

Last intake of brintellix 5mg: Saturday, September 11, 2021
