Tulip52: tapering off imipramine

Tulip52

Recommended Posts

Hi, I’ve been on imipramine for about 13 years and I’ve been tapering over the last 6 or so years.  My highest dose was 250 mg and I have been on 100 mg for about a year and a half.  Aug 20 I began another taper by cutting down to 50 mg... today being day 5 on my new dose.  I’m experiencing some vertigo, fatigue and a little if ruminating thoughts.. nothing too bad.

Welcome to SA, Tulip52.

Dropping from 100mg to 50mg is tapering much faster than we recommend, which accounts for the withdrawal symptoms you're experiencing.  We recommend tapering by no more that 10% of your current dose every four weeks.

Why taper by 10% of my dosage?

This link is specifically about tapering Imipramine.

Tips for tapering off imipramine (Tofranil) - Tapering ...

It takes a little more than a week for a dose change to reach full effect and register in your brain.  It may be that the minor symptoms you're experiencing will remain tolerable.  It's also possible that more symptoms are coming and often withdrawal symptoms are delayed.  My recommendation would be, since you've only been at 50mg for 5 days,  to go back up to 100mg and wait for your symptoms to abate and then to taper using the 10% method.

Are you taking Imipramine PM (which is grains in a capsule) or tablets?  The link gives information about dosing with tablets, but if you're taking the PM capsule, your approach may need to be different.  In 2016, before I discovered SA, I tapered too fast from 75mg Imipramine PM to 15mg.  As I got to the lower doses, I began to feel significant withdrawal symptoms, especially anxiety.  I updosed and stabilized.  My method of tapering the PM Imipramine was to use a digital scale and weigh my doses. I don't know whether the PM grains are water soluble.

We don't recommend a lot of supplements on SA, as many members report being sensitive to them due to our over-reactive nervous systems, but two supplements that we do recommend are magnesium and omega 3 (fish oil). Many people find these to be calming to the nervous system.

Magnesium, nature's calcium channel blocker

Omega-3 fatty acids (fish oil)

Add in one at a time and at a low dose in case you do experience problems.

This is your Introduction topic, where you can ask questions and connect with other members.  We're glad you found your way here.

The following describes the method for making a liquid.  The link is about making liquid Celexa but would be applicable to Imipramine tablets.

You can make a liquid from imipramine (see http://survivingantidepressants.org/index.php?/topic/2693-how-to-make-a-liquid-from-tablets-or-capsules/ ) (Imipramine is soluble in water, see http://www.drugs.com/pro/imipramine.html and stable for a month http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.1365-2710.1976.tb00053.x/abstract )

Day 4 of taper to 50 mg.  The imipramine caused ringing in my ears when I started on it years ago.  I was so desperate to get some relief from depression that I stayed on it bc it did help.

My ears are ringing more and they are a little stopped up since beginning this last taper.  I have a couple of things going on that has caused some sadness and anxiety but I’m ok.  Going to ride the wave and take it easy.

Noticed a couple of things.

- When I take the 50 mg at night I get depressed and anxious for about thirty minutes.

- I started walking for exercise and noticed that I am not as breathless.

Why is my medicine suddenly making me anxious and depressed thirty minutes after I take it?

My symptoms are manageable during the day and I take my med at the same time I always have.

19 days since my taper down to 50mg.  I can not believe how much easier it is to just take off walking and being able to go for almost an hour without being breathless.  And I didn’t have to build up to it… incredible!

Another thing I’ve noticed is that caffeine affects me more.  Prior to tapering down last month I didn’t feel when caffeine was wearing off around the four - five hour mark.

When I say wearing off I mean that I actually start feeling anxious.  Once I drink more I feel much better so I know it’s the caffeine.

I read somewhere in here that it can take around six good weeks to feel the full effect of the last taper.  Today is one day over three weeks since tapering down to 50 and I will def be sitting here a while.

I want to remember that the very unpleasant anxiety I’m experiencing after taking my 50mg at bedtime is just my body adjusting and reacting to the lower dose and that it will settle down soon.

During the day I’m pretty much ok.  I can ride the waves that come here and there.  I’m waking up from this long, thirty something year sleep!  I can feel and think more clearly.  I’m also noticing these last few days that I do not have the desire to snack all day.

I know that I also have to be aware of what I focus on.. to remind myself to jump off of the obsessive thinking hamster wheel that goes no where.

Anxiety just makes me feel like everything is an emergency.. I’m perfectly ok doing things at a slower pace while I heal.

Its a good day to have a good day

Yes, this happened to me at the beginning of my symptomts. I don't remember that i recognized any way that can help but improvement as time passes. May be if you stick to a specific bed time, i guess this may help too.

i wasn't on a certain drug all the period. i took many drugs many times and for no very long period but to simplify.

--fluvoxamine maleate100 mg + amisulpride 200mg------started july 2012 and total taper in february 2015 ( 9 months without drugs then)

--sertraline 100mg -------started november 2015 and total taper (withoud reduction slowly) in november 2016( 4 months withoud drugs then).

--sertraline 100mg + quetiabine 25mg ( started in mars 2016 and for 7 months) then fluvoxamine maleate 100mg again for another 7months and after that a something like to use every drug for 14 days and for about 1.5 years.

--my last drug was trintellix 10 mg ( used it in 12/2018and total taper in 4/2019).

symptomts i have now ( bad concentration and problems in short and long memory+ bad depersonalization).

Thanks for chiming in, Mustafa.  Last night I actually had trouble falling asleep and once I did I woke up 2-3 times.  Fortunately, I am retired so I was able to get a little more sleep late this morning.

I did just hang blackout curtains and it does help to keep the bright morning light out.  If anyone else has any other ideas please let me know.

Yesterday was a really good day but I’m obviously experiencing some type of shift.  Last night for the first time since starting my taper I had trouble falling asleep. I also had a runny nose and headache (histamine issue?)

Today I did my typical magnesium soak and after became really tired and depressed.  I usually just feel calm after.  Maybe I’m more sensitive and need to focus more on electrolytes to keep my adrenals comfy?

This shift has me a little scared, doing some what if thinking about what if I’m just not going to be ok off of this med.. what if I’m messing up by getting off and if I need to go back up, what if it won’t work like it was??

I recognize this is anxiety talking.  I am not enjoying this wave of emotions and the change with physical fatigue and body aches.

Anybody there? Positive support anyone?

Day 20 on my last slow taper and I was fine yesterday.  Last night I had trouble going to sleep and woke up atleast three times through the night.  today, really for the first time in a while I’m a little depressed and anxiety is raising its head.

I know it’s anxiety but I’m having these what if I’m making a mistake by getting off if this med?  What if I want to go back and it doesn’t work next time? What if I am really just to broken to be off if meds in the first place?

Note to self.. my body is more sensitive since tapering.  The amount of magnesium in the soaks that I am used of is too much for now.  Major adrenal upset from it yesterday.. bad anxiety!!

So, a few nights ago the souls of my feet were burning and my shoulder that had not been bothering me too much (torn rotator cuff) really started keeping me awake.  How I usually position myself to sleep was causing lots of pain.  Now, the last couple of days I’m experiencing a burning sensation in my shoulder and down my inner arm, into my hand.  This morning I’m experiencing some slight numbness down my outer left calve.  I looked up “burning” in here and others have mentioned this happening also.  One also said that it seems to happen where there is muscle tightness.  Really hope this is temporary!

Emotionally, I felt wonderful yesterday and woke up feeling the same.  It almost scares me.  Kind of reminds me of how good I felt the six weeks after I went cold turkey on Lexapro and then crashed.  Really hope this isn’t the same.  I’m thinking I’ll sit on 50 mg a while to be safe.
